1 NOTE Death: Quality: 0 c647 at Mid Continent Library, on Highway 24, Independence, MO: Tennessee. He was born in December, 1849, in Overton County, near Livingston, the son of George Washington and Elizabeth (Taylor) Shepherd, the former a native of
2 CONT Virginia and the latter of Tennessee. The father died in Tennessee and the mother in Johnson County, Missouri. Her remains were intered in Liberty Cemetery. In 1863, J.P.B Shepherd enlisted at Jacksonville, IL, in the Seventh Illinois Infantry,
2 CONT serving with Company K. He was first stationed at Rock Island, guarding prisoners and later saw active service with his regiment in Kentucky, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina. He was for a time with "Fighting Joe Hooker" and in
2 CONT many battles and skirmishes. His two brothers, Moses and Thomas, served in the Union Army, answering Lincoln's first call for volunteers. J.P.B. Shepherd was mustered out and honorably discharged at Springfield, IL, in 1865. In 1873, Mr.
2 CONT Shepherd came to Johnson County and for a short time was located at Valley City. He was engaged in farming there on the place owned by Charlie Sellers. Among the first pioneers of Valley City, who were there in 1873 and are still with us, are
2 CONT Perry Bold and "Willy" Maddox. In 1880 J.P.B. Shepherd purchased his present home from Mrs. John Powelson and the land adjoining her place, a farm which now comprises two hundred forty acres. All the improvements on the place, Mr. Shepherd has
2 CONT himself placed there. He is giving most of his attention to stock raising, handling Bershire and Poland China hogs and Aberdeen Angus cattle. The males only are registered. About one hundred acres of this place are in corn, thirty-five acres in
2 CONT oats and ten acres in alfalfa. Near the drainage ditch, which crosses the southwestern end of the farm, is a ridge underlaid with the best quality of firing clay, five percent iron. Mr. Shepherd has a sample brick made from the clay, showing
2 CONT its excellent qualities. There is not a rock on the entire place which was not placed there by Mr. Shepherd. He had a well dug, near the house, and after digging down fifty feet with a spade no rock was found. The farm is exceedingly well
2 CONT watered and is an ideal stock ranch. D.F. Warnkey to Dora McDowell of Crawford County, KS. Mrs. Shepherd is a native of Iowa, born March 3, 1856, daughter of J.A. and Eleanor McDowell, natives of West Virginia and Belmont County, Ohio,

2 CONT them. He kept his sons. Olive was given to a family named Hogan. Harry Henry Hogan (some censuses state just Henry Hoga) and Harry's wife was called Nancie. "Dolly." She was fond of him, but Nancie just took her in to work. If she did not have
2 CONT her dress off on her return from school by the time she got to the yard, Nancie would take a whip to her. She was so little when she had to wash the dishes, she had to stand on the wood burning stove's oven door. If she broke a dish, she was
2 CONT whipped. They were supposed to be real religious, but they were abusers. Olive also had to milk cows early in the morning, pick worms off the tobacco leaves, everything. The Hogans (after the old father died) would go to town (Nevada, MO) to
2 CONT church, and leave her alone all weekend. She was scared of the dark and remained so even in her adult years. This all happened in Deerfield, MO (Vernon County). On the census with the Hogans, it stated "adopted daughter." She was never adopted
2 CONT by them. Upon the Hogan's death, she was taken by other members of the family in Oklahoma. She was later found by her sister, Mary. Later, Olive married Mary's husband's brother, James Otto Morgan. There were relatives of the Hogans that Olive
2 CONT liked in later years. One in particular was Roberta Bear, who was a neice to either Harry or Nancie. Note: all of this information was from Olive herself, related to her son, William H. Morgan, who is writing this information. I have records of
2 CONT the Nanci Hogan family that goes back to the early 1800's. To make it clearer, Olive Mae Hanley and Mary Etta Hanley were sisters, and they married brothers, James Otto Morgan and Fredrick H. Morgan. Buried Sunset Hill Cemetery, Warrensburg,
2 CONT MO, Lot 207, West 1/2, Section D, No. 2. Klontz family, namely William (father), Ida (mohter) and the children were: a brother of the one of the parents name Sarvel living with them. Olive lived to be 86 years old and was revered by her family.
2 CONT She wanted for nothing in later years as her children were financially able to provide her with all the finer things in life. Olive and her husband, James O. Morgan, had ten children and every one of them did well and were never in no way in
