I was just eleven years old when he left us, but his 1 CONC passing is as bright in my memory as it was the day he passed over the 1 CONC chilly river of death. 1 CONT He was a man that was never idle. He was a good mechanic, and 1 CONC transportation expert, navigating the Cumberland, Ohio and Mississippi 1 CONC Rivers. 1 CONT The closest point of shipping in his early days was Cairo, ILL. So 1 CONC from here the products of the farm had to be carried away by flat boats. 1 CONC So when he was quie young he began building flat boats and buying boat 1 CONC loads of farm products and run it down the Cumberland, Ohio, and 1 CONC Mississippi Rivers to new Orleans, the closest market of any note. He 1 CONC would be gone 8 or 9 weeks on a trip and would have to walk back home 1 CONC from Cairo, ILL. He bacame a noted pilot. Oftimes when he came home he 1 CONC would not stay more than one or two nights, until he would start on 1 CONC another trip. He kept this up as long as he lived; running the river from 1 CONC here to Nashville, after it became a market and the steamboats began 1 CONC coming up the Cumberland. I remember him floating timber down the 1 CONC Cumberland to Nashville when I was a small boy. 1 CONT On 22 April 1872 he made his last trip, on his way back home, on a 1 CONC steamboat named the "Umpire", with the river running very low, the boat 1 CONC got to Sandshoals near Granville and tied up to wait until morning. 1 CONC During the night one of the most terrific rains began to fall that has 1 CONC been my lot to see fall and the next morning the river was over the 1 CONC bottoms. They had to work hard all night to keep the boat pushed from 1 CONC under the timber and keep it from catching and being turned over. The 1 CONC river was full of drift. It took the boat until late in the evening to 1 CONC plow 1 CONT its way from Sandshoals to Sugar Creek. My father was then in failing 1 CONC health and gradually grew worse until 29 September, when he passed away. 1 CONC On 30 September 1872, I saw him lowered down into the narrow limits of 1 CONC his tomb in the Anderson Cemetary. 1 CONT Solomon says that a good name is more to be desired than gold. Paul 1 CONC says, "children honor your parents and you shall live long upon this 1 CONC earth." 1 CONT We write this sketch in honor of our good father's name. He said he was a 1 CONC son of Albert Moss and a grandson of John Fleetwood Moss, the older 1 CONC brother that I had never seen. John had left Jackson County before I was 1 CONC born, went to Missouri, married, spent several years there, and then 1 CONC moved to Cooper, Texas where he spent the remainder of his life. He 1 CONC lived to be an old man and raised a family of six children: three boys 1 CONC and three girls. 1 CONT Ashley is the first of his family that has ever seen any of his 1 CONC grandfather's people. My brother left here before the Civil War. I was 1 CONC born in 1861 and I believe John left in the fall of 1859. 1 CONT Ashley is 41 years old and his father has raised nine children and 1 CONC from all appearences we don't think we need to be ashamed of our 1 CONC brother's family. Our brother has been dead for 40 years. 1 CONT This boy, Ashley Moss, was out on a vacation tour from Cooper, Texas 1 CONC to Buckingham County, Virginia; where his great grandfather came from. 1 CONC We hadn't heard from any of our brother's family since he died and we did 1 CONC not know whether any of them were living or not. All of John's children 1 CONC are living but one. His oldest son, William Thomas, died two years ago. 1 CONT We don't know if there ever was another case like this. When my 1 CONC brother went too start out he took our father 1 CONT by the hand and said, "Pap, I never expect to be in Jackson County 1 CONC again." He made good on his word. 1 CONT This boy never spent but about 4 hours with us. We had dinner, 1 CONC drove up to brother Fate's and to Sugar Creek to see his great 1 CONC grandfather's old home. Moss was born in Greensburg, KY in October 1822. His 1 CONC father was Captain Tom Moss who was a long and estimable citizen of that 1 CONC place. Tom was an officer during the War of 1812 and his mother was a 1 CONC sister of Judge Ed Bullock of Hickman Co., KY. The subject of this sketch 1 CONC engaged in trade at an early age but he also partook largely of the 1 CONC martial disposition which had characterized his progenitors. Upon the 1 CONC breaking out of the Mexican War he raised a company of ambitious spirits 1 CONC in his native county and his was the first company of McKee's Regiment 1 CONC that was organized and was consequently named Company A, Second Kentucky 1 CONC Volunteer Infantry. This was an odd coincidence with the fact that in 1 CONC the Civil War his company and regiment bore the identical designations of 1 CONC those with which he did service in 1847-48. He went with Col. McKee to 1 CONC Mexico, remained till the expiration of his term of service, and won a 1 CONC reputation which was inferior to that of no company commander of Kentucky 1 CONC volunteers in the operations in which they were engaged. 1 CONT With a disposition naturally stern and exacting, he did not fail to 1 CONC bring his company to as high a state of discipline as possible under the 1 CONC circumstances; and when the ordeal came, on that day noted in our 1 CONC calendar, February 23, 1848 at Buena Vista, he is said to have displayed 1 CONC not only the same unflinching courage for which he was distinguished in 1 CONC the Confederate Army, but a cool judgment that enabled him to handle his 1 CONC command to the greatest advantage possible to one acting under immediate 1 CONC orders and in conjunction with other companies of the regiment. The 1 CONC manner in which he sheltered his men from unnecessary exposure when not 1 CONC engaged and brought them into action when McKee went forward was long a 1 CONC subject of remark. When Lieutenant Colonel Clay fell from his horse, 1 CONC mortally wounded, Captain Moss had the presence of mind, in the sad 1 CONC confusion that momentarily ensued, to perceive that the regular infirmary 1 CONC detail was not available and accordingly ordered some of his men to bear 1 CONC him from the field, which they attempted to do. One man, Austin M. 1 CONC Chaudoin, was killed while thus engaged. His service to that unfortunate 1 CONC officer was afterward acknowledged by Mrs. Clay in a substantial present 1 CONC to Mrs. Chaudoin. 1 CONT It is to be regretted that there is not a more complete record of 1 CONC this part of his life; but he was never communicative, even to his most 1 CONC trusted friends, and could scarcely be induced to speak of his own 1 CONC adventures and exploits--a fact which renders more valuable, however, the 1 CONC meager accounts that have come down to us, since those who are 1 CONC continually recounting incidents involving their own personal prowess are 1 CONC seldom credited by their listeners, even though they may sometimes keep 1 CONC strictly within the bounds of truth. 1 CONT After having returned from Mexico, he again engaged in trade, 1 CONC chiefly in live stock and produce, for which he sought a Southern market 1 CONC and his transactions were so uniformly fortunate that, at the beginning 1 CONC of hostilities in 1861, he had amassed a large property, had a reputation 1 CONC for both sound judgment and promptness, and his integrity in business 1 CONC transactions commanded the respect and confidence of all who knew him. 1 CONT His principles, however, soon called upon him to risk all and, as it 1 CONC proved, to lose all. The knowledge that war was again in the land 1 CONC aroused at once his martial fire. In June 1861, having now been some 1 CONC years a citizen of Columbus, KY, he raised a company consisting chiefly 1 CONC of young men from Hickman and Ballard counties, which was the first to 1 CONC clear a space and pitch a tent at Camp Boone. 1 CONT His company was organized on the 5th of July 1861 and he was elected 1 CONC its captain. The same firm and determined disposition manifested sixteen 1 CONC years before, in a similar capacity, now contributed to the preparation 1 CONC of these men for many conflicts, beside which Buena Vista pales in 1 CONC comparison. But, though considered stern, strict, and precise in the 1 CONC requirement and in the performance of duty, he was devoted to his men, 1 CONC proud of them, solicitous for their personal comfort, as well as their 1 CONC reputation, and the consequence was that they trusted and honored him. 1 CONC When the Second Regiment first went into battle, it was looked upon as a 1 CONC matter of course that he would set a noble to his men and to hitherto 1 CONC untried officers; and one who served with him throughout, and knew him 1 CONC well, expressed himself, when speaking of Col. Moss, to the effect that 1 CONC he never saw a braver man in battle nor a more collected one; that he was 1 CONC so much so, indeed, that he seemed as wholly insensible of fear as though 1 CONC he knew himself invulnerable. 1 CONT He fought at Donelson and shared the subsequent imprisonment of the 1 CONC command; then at Hartsville, commanding the right wing of the regiment, 1 CONC in the absence of all but one of the field officers; and on the 13th of 1 CONC December 1862, he was promoted to major and fought in that capacity at 1 CONC Stone River, Jackson, and Chickamauga. After the fall of 1 CONC Lieutenant-Colonel Hewitt, 20 September 1863, he was promoted to that 1 CONC rank; and, on the resignation of Colonel Johnson, 19 October 1863, to 1 CONC colonel. He now commanded the regiment in every subsequent battle up to 1 CONC 31 August 1864, when, endeavoring to press forward on the enemy's works, 1 CONC under their withering fire, he had an arm shattered, and, having 1 CONC previously greatly debilitated by ill health, he directly became so 1 CONC weakened with loss of blood and excruciating pain that he could not drag 1 CONC himself away, nor could the infirmary detail reach him without the almost 1 CONC certain loss of many lives; so he fell into the hands of the enemy and 1 CONC was carried to Marietta where he suffered amputation and shortly 1 CONC afterward died. 1 CONT He is described as having been, in the opinion of those who observed 1 CONC him closely, a man of uncommon military judgment, both as regarded the 1 CONC handling of his own command, and the more comprehensive business of 1 CONC divining the purpose and plans of an enemy and suggesting the means that 1 CONC should be adopted to thwart him. And he was no less remarkable for a 1 CONC disposition to act upon his own judgment, when left with discretionary 1 CONC power, and was found, in the main, to be correct, even when he chose to 1 CONC act in opposition to the express opinions of others. 1 CONT His ordinary demeanor was rather gruff and taciturn, apparently 1 CONC severe, and as blunt as that of "Old Jube", but a feature of his 1 CONC character, as marked as those of his bravery and self-reliance, was his 1 CONC warmhearted generosity toward his family and friends. He evidently 1 CONC delighted in obliging and relieving any who was distressed. "This," says 1 CONC one who knew him well, "was the greatest pleasure of his life," and Dr. 1 CONC Daniel P. White, who knew him from boyhood, replied to some inquiries of 1 CONC the writer, that he "never knew more whole souled and liberal hearted men 1 CONC than the brothers Moss, who were grown up and in business before they 1 CONC left Greensburg." He related that while he was engaged in mercantile 1 CONC trade there, it was a custom with Colonel Moss (who was joined in it by 1 CONC his brothers) to leave a standing order at the establishment to let his 1 CONC father, mother, and sisters have everything they called for; that the 1 CONC account during the year was often extravagantly large, but never 1 CONC questioned, and the items never asked for. They would simply inquire the 1 CONC amount when the day of settlement came and pay it. 1 CONT During the summer campaign of 1864, the health of Colonel Moss 1 CONC became sadly impaired, and in August he had sick leave and went down to 1 CONC Macon, where, after a few days, Chaplain Pickett met him; and, in answer 1 CONC to inquiries concerning his health, he replied in a tone touched with 1 CONC sadness, almost with the solemnity of sorrow, and wholly unlike himself, 1 CONC that he was not improved; "but," he said firmly, " I am going up to the 1 CONC front." The chaplain remonstrated and insisted that so far from its 1 CONC being required of him. it would be absolute injustice to himself to enter 1 CONC the field again in that worn and feeble state. But he was not to be 1 CONC moved and declared that he could not be satisfied away from his command 1 CONC during such a time of danger and responsibility. Then exclaiming, "Yes, 1 CONC yes, I must go up," concluded the interview and like one impelled by some 1 CONC mysterious power to "rush upon the thick bosses of his fate, he set out 1 CONC directly afterward, arrived at Jonesboro in time to enter the charge of 1 CONC 31 August and received a wound that terminated a gallant and devoted 1 CONC career. 1 CONT Under an act of Legislature The family was living in Venice, IL, a 1 CONC northern suburb of East St. Louis in 1878 when tragedy struck. The 1 CONC following headlines appear on the front page of the St. Louis 1 CONC Post-Dispatch on Feb 18, 1878: "Dr. Moss of Venice, IL murdered this 1 CONC morning. Shot down in the presence of his wife. Assassin makes good his 1 CONC escape." The article goes on to say that Dr. Moss was one of the most 1 CONC respected and highly esteemed citizens of Illinois, was a Mason and 1 CONC member of the Knights of Honor. Dr. Moss was slightly ill at the time 1 CONC and got up around 1:00 AM to take some medicine. He lit a lamp, got his 1 CONC medicine, and was returning to bed when he saw the face of a mulatto or 1 CONC very dirty white man at his window. Thinking someone might possibly be 1 CONC seeking his assistance as a physician he reluctantly opened the door and 1 CONC saw two ruffianly persons in the yard. He asked them what they wanted 1 CONC but Mrs. Moss did not hear their reply. Dr. Moss said "You know better 1 CONC than that. it is not that you want." The ruffians remained in the yard 1 CONC with threatening appearance and Dr. Moss stated, "Get out of my yard or I 1 CONC will shoot you." One of the men then pulled a gun and shot Dr. Moss in 1 CONC the chest. He turned to his wife who was by his side and said, "I am 1 CONC shot. I am dead", and fell to the floor. A posse chased the men to the 1 CONC bridge into St. Louis from East St. Louis but they were already on the 1 CONC other side. They were not found. A pathologist from St. Louis performed 1 CONC an autopsy on henry Clay Moss at his residence. He was killed with a .32 1 CONC caliber pistol. The business houses in Venice closed the day he was 1 CONC buried, the Knights of Honor offered 200 dollars reward for information 1 CONC in regard to his murderer and the state and county were to put up an 1 CONC additional 500 dollar reward. Fanny Catherine Shreve thaought this 1 CONC family had children but the newspaper report does not mention children. 1 CONC We did not locate the Henry Clay Moss family in the 1870 census of 1 CONC Venice, Madison Co.
