The cemetery is now called 2 CONT Morrow Cem. It is locatied behind a office abuilding towards Jonesboro on the same side of the tracks as the Post Office. PP 959 960 1 HIST THE EIGHTEEN-SEVENTIES 1 HIST On Saturday morning, July26,1879,on the road to Bolton (then called Iceville), six miles from the city, stood a weather-stained old homestead with blinds of faded green. And back of its tottering portico, under it mouldering roof, lay the 2 CONT victims of as gruesome a murder as has everbeen committed in Fulton County. Martin DeFoor and his wife Susan were murdered that rainy Friday night,as they lay in bed, and though 73 years have passed, the identity of the slayer has never been 2 CONT discovered, not a satisfactory motive established. 1 HIST The bodies, nearly decapitated by axe blows, were found at 6 A.M. July 26th, by Martin Walker, a grandson, who noticing that his grandparents were not up at their usual hour, went in to investigate. The old couple had not a known enemy in the 2 CONT world, and that robbery was not the motive, was evidenced by the fact that, while a bureau drawer had been broken into, a bag containg $18 in silver was left in plain sight,undistrubed. Several other articles of value were unmoledsted .All 2 CONT that was taken were Mr. DeFoor's wallet,containing nothing but some promissory notes, and his boots,which were later foundin the wooods some 400 feet from the house. 1 HIST In the Defoor home was an upstair room, reached by a ladder, and rarely used by members of the family. Upon investigation, unmistakalble sign of recent occupancy wer efound in this room. The bed was rumpled, as if by a human form, and the 2 CONT counterpane bore the muddy impress of a bare foot. In a lumber room adjoing was found recent human excrement containg watermelon seed, and evidence of urination in a basket o fcotton. It was therfore concluded that the murderer has slipped 2 CONT into the house during the preceding day, and concealed himself upstairs until that night,when he descended to commit his horrible deed, and then departed by the backdoor, which was found unlatched from the inside. The axe was found in the 2 CONT fireplace, covered with ashes and blood. Near the spot where the murdered man's boots were discovered, were the remains of a watermelon feast. 1 HIST Despite the best efforts of Sherriff William A Wilson, his deputies, and his successor,Angus M. Perkerson, the crime was never solved. Many suspects, mostly Negroes were arrested, but each clue ended in a blind alley. 1 HIST Matin DeFoor came to DeKalb County from Franklin County during the middle 1840's and settled in the Panthersville District. In1853 he moved to the old Montgomery settlement at Bolton,where he tookover the operation of Montgomery's Ferry, soon 2 CONT to become known as DeFoor's Ferry. From that time until his death, DeFoor and his family lived in the former Montgomery home, one of the oldest in the county, and located on the west side of what is now Chattahoochee Avenue, just north of 2 CONT Moore's Mill Road. He helped to survery for the saw mill and later pushed whellbarrow loads of concrete up a ramp to build the massive foundation for the mill's electric generators. My grandfather's 2 CONT name was Joseph Terrel DeFoor and had nin brothers oand one sister, of which only the sister is still allive, Lola. There are numberous other DeFoors around that area, some of whom we amet at a reunion four years ago. I grew up in Atlanta, GA 2 CONT but moved to Kentucy before high school and went to school there. My parents still live there in a small tow ccalled Harrodsburg. 1 HIST My wife and I recenly move to Mt Pleasant So Carolina, right outside of Charlestown, where I am doing my residency in surgery. My understanding anectdotaly of our origins are similat to yours, that Hugeonot group was forced from France to 2 CONT Belgium and on to the New World via Charleston. However, I don't hany any document to support that. 1 HIST I lived in Paris, France, for a while and found some grave markers in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery marked Famille Dufour. My father always told me that the word DeFoor originated from the Frech de fue whic means "from iron" Intersting enought 2 CONT he said his older grandparents and great uncles pronounced the name DeFoor like :"du fair" whic is the French prononciation of de fer. The name hay have been changedd somewhere through Belguim. It certainly has the look of a Flemish name with 2 CONT the doube o's. Occasionally I will search the worldwide medical literature on authors name and will try inserting DeFoor.
