Her childhood, school days and young adult 2 CONC life 2 CONT produced many colorful stories of life involved with "rough and 2 CONC tumble" 2 CONT Texans, and after high school was completed, venturing into Waco for 2 CONC a year of 2 CONT college and then deciding upon entering the noble profession of 2 CONC nursing. This 2 CONT was accomplished at Scott & White Hospital's School of Nursing 2 CONC located in 2 CONT Temple, Texas - which is known as the Mayo of the South! It was there 2 CONC she 2 CONT became friends with another little hard working, ambitious, nurse 2 CONC (Hannah 2 CONT Agnes Adelia "Dee" Crane Hamilton) who introduced her to her hero 2 CONC returning 2 CONT World War I brother, Albert Lester Theodore "Ted" Crane who was 2 CONC destined to 2 CONT become her husband and my father. Ted's heroic actions as a medic 2 CONC over in the 2 CONT battles in France saved other men's lives, but did cost him much of 2 CONC his eye 2 CONT sight from that dreaded mustard gas. Annie and Ted made their home 2 CONC in Chicago 2 CONT where Ted was employed by the Chicago Park District. Annie nursed at 2 CONC various 2 CONT Chicago hospitals - always known as a kind and gentle "Angel of 2 CONC Mercy". I, 2 CONT their daughter, and only child, came into their lives in 1932. 2 CONC Mother's 2 CONT nursing career was then focused on me - giving me a nurturing, 2 CONC loving, 2 CONT childhood. As I grew older, she returned to nursing as an industrial 2 CONC nurse 2 CONT working at Kellogg Switchboard Company; Miller & Hart (in the Chicago 2 CONT Stockyards) and then her over ten last working years at Dries & Krump 2 CONC Forging 2 CONT Foundry at 67th & Loomis. She made many friends with her fellow 2 CONC workers, and 2 CONT could always be relied upon as a true and caring confidant. Mom also 2 CONC was 2 CONT called to perform private-duty nursing services to many people who 2 CONC highly 2 CONT praised her skills. She always worked with all her energy directed 2 CONC to her 2 CONT duties and the glory of God! Her Christian testimony was lived and 2 CONC verbalized 2 CONT whenever the opportunity presented itself. She loved the Lord - 2 CONC God's Word - 2 CONT and the Church! Her life was centered always in these areas. These 2 CONC last 2 CONT years, Mom and I lived together, and I was privileged to share them 2 CONC with her. 2 CONT Her three grandsons and their families were the light of her life. 2 CONC All of you 2 CONT dear and caring friends - our Thursday Morning Bible Class here at 2 CONC church, 2 CONT plus the host of others in her life story were always dear and 2 CONC precious to 2 CONT her. I would like to close her final chapter with a direct quote from 2 CONC one of 2 CONT her loving Texas cousins, Roy Kaulfus, who wrote us saying, "Annie, 2 CONC God must 2 CONT surely have a special place in his house for such a daughter such as 2 CONC you. 2 CONT Thank you for that wonderful habit of always writing and sending 2 CONC cards 2 CONT expressing a continuing, caring, love for those kin folks so many 2 CONC miles apart 2 CONT - but close in your heart." I would like to proclaim - thank you, 2 CONC too, Mom - 2 CONT Annie Bell Mostyn Crane - for being my Mom - you will always live in 2 CONC our 2 CONT hearts and memories as a wonderful Mother, Grandmother and Great 2 CONC Grandmother. 2 CONT We love you!! JOHN MEEKER CRANE 2 CONC John 2 CONT Meeker Crane was born March 3, 1840, in Jackson County, Indiana. We 2 CONC do not, 2 CONT as of this writing, know the names of his parents, but a record 2 CONC written by his 2 CONT daughter, Clara Belle Crane Seley, states: "I have no record of my 2 CONC father's 2 CONT parent's births, but his father died June 3, 1849, at the age of 40 2 CONC years, 5 2 CONT months, 28 days. Cause of death was lung fever. His mother died 2 CONC August 19, 2 CONT 1869, at age 59 years, 9 months, 7 days. Her cause of death was 2 CONC typhoid 2 CONT fever." (Handwritten notation states: "Father's name was Isaac B. 2 CONC Crane and 2 CONT Mother's name was Minerva Lauraway.") John would have been 9 years 2 CONC old when 2 CONT his father died. His father would have been born December 5, 1808. 2 CONC His 2 CONT mother would have been born November 12, 1809. She would have died 2 CONC three years 2 CONT after John came to Kansas, so we believe she stayed in Indiana, and 2 CONC is most 2 CONT likely buried by her husband somewhere near Hardenburg and Four 2 CONC Corners, 2 CONT Indiana, in Jackson or Jennings County. We believe that our American 2 CONC Indian 2 CONT heritage comes from his mother's ancestors, but we have no further 2 CONC information 2 CONT on them at this time. John was married to Mariam Elizabeth Morris, 2 CONC daughter of 2 CONT Benjamin and Mary Lancaster Morris, on March 31, 1861, at the home of 2 CONC Mariam's 2 CONT Uncle Levi and Jerusha Brown Morris, in Jackson County, Indiana, by 2 CONC Methodist 2 CONT pastor, John F. McClain (or McClane). Their first child, a son, 2 CONC Julian Albert 2 CONT Crane, was born February 9, 1862, in Jackson County, Indiana. On 2 CONC August 6, 2 CONT 1862, when they had been married 17 months, and Julian was 6 months 2 CONC old, John 2 CONT enlisted in the Union Army to fight against slavery in the Civil War. 2 CONC He 2 CONT enrolled as a Private in Company G, 67th Regiment, Indiana Infantry, 2 CONC at 2 CONT Seymore, Jackson County, Indiana. His enrollment was for 3 years. We 2 CONC can 2 CONT only speculate, but, knowing of the poor conditions of the camps and 2 CONC their 2 CONT clothing at that time, it is entirely possible that John suffered 2 CONC froom 2 CONT frost-bitten feet while at this first camp. We do know that his army 2 CONC records 2 CONT show that from November 9 through December 1862, he was reported as 2 CONC "sick at 2 CONT Seymore, Indiana". He was sent to New Orleans, Louisiana, in 2 CONC February, 1863, 2 CONT and was detailed to the Ambulance Corps, 10th Division on March 15, 2 CONC 1863, as 2 CONT an ambulance drive, on detached service with the Marine U. S. A. 2 CONC General 2 CONT Hospital in New Orleans. He was paid $20.94 for expenses of 2 CONC transportation 2 CONT from Indianapolis, Indiana, to Memphis, Tennessee, and another $10.00 2 CONC to 2 CONT report on to New Orleans. He, himself, became a patient in Marine U. 2 CONC S. A. 2 CONT General Hospital, in New Orleans, August 18 until October 5, 1863, 2 CONC when he was 2 CONT released to continue ambulance service there. On May 25, 1864, he 2 CONC was 2 CONT transferred to serve as ambulance driver out of U. S. A. General 2 CONC Hospital, 2 CONT Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He again became ill, and was a patient in 2 CONC this 2 CONT hospital from May 28 through July 22, 1864. Upon his release, he was 2 CONC granted 2 CONT a 60 day recuperative furlough by the Surgeon General, and returned 2 CONC home to 2 CONT his wife and family in Jackson County, Indiana, for that period of 2 CONC time. His 2 CONT wife, Mariam, was evidently pregnant when he first left for the Army, 2 CONC as 9 2 CONT months later, on May 12, 1863, their second child, a daughter, Mary 2 CONC Adaline 2 CONT Crane, was born. She was 14 months old when he came home in July of 2 CONC 1884. He 2 CONT returned to his unit in September and on October 28, 1864, he was 2 CONC assigned as 2 CONT Service Guard at Post Commissary, Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was 2 CONC admitted as 2 CONT a patient in McPherson U. S. A. General Hospital, Vicksburg, 2 CONC Mississippi, on 2 CONT November 22, 1864, and remained a patient through April 1865. He was 2 CONC mustered 2 CONT out at Vicksburg with an honorable discharge on May 31, 1865. He was 2 CONC paid 2 CONT $25.00 a month while in service, $10.00 for transportation home on 2 CONC furlough in 2 CONT the fall of 1864, and a $28.00 clothing allowance, in addition to the 2 CONT transportation money listed earlier. The nature of his sicknesses 2 CONC were never 2 CONT mentioned in any of his records, and his name was not on any of the 2 CONC Army's 2 CONT admittedly incomplete hospital records. This omission and incomplete 2 CONC records 2 CONT were a major cause in the delay, in later years, of the granting of 2 CONC his 2 CONT Disability Pension. John returned to Jennings County, near 2 CONC Hardenburg, 2 CONT Indiana, to his wife and two youngsters. Clara (spelled "Clarah" by 2 CONC her 2 CONT father) Belle Crane was born there on April 20, 1866, eleven months 2 CONC after 2 CONT John's discharge. That summer, month unknown, while Clara was only a 2 CONC few 2 CONT months old, John, with his wife, Mariam; his son, Julian Albert (age 2 CONC 4); 2 CONT daughter, Mary Adaline (age 3) and infant, Clara Belle, moved to 2 CONC Riley County, 2 CONT Kansas, in a covered wagon. It is thought that several other 2 CONC relatives 2 CONT traveled with them, among them, perhaps Mariam's Uncle Levi Morris, 2 CONC wife, 2 CONT Jerusha, and daughter, Minerva. Records show that Levi Morris died 2 CONC April 8, 2 CONT 1872, in Riley County, Kansas. We have an affidavit dated December 2 CONC 15, 1888, 2 CONT signed by a Hester A. Miller, age 44, of Clifton, Washington County, 2 CONC Kansas, 2 CONT who says she is a sister of John Meeker Crane. She would have been 2 CONC four years 2 CONT younger than John. She would have been 22 when John came to Kansas. 2 CONC Hester 2 CONT married John Conrad Miller in Baldwin Creek, Kansas. John and Mariam 2 CONC settled 2 CONT first on Mill Creek, near Milford, Riley County, Kansas, but in a 2 CONC short time 2 CONT they moved near Randolph, Kansas. A few years later, they moved 8 or 2 CONC 9 miles 2 CONT north-west of Randolph, on Walnut Creek. Life was very hard for 2 CONC Mariam 2 CONT Elizabeth Morris Crane, and for her babies in Kansas. Little Mary 2 CONC Adaline 2 CONT Crane died October 18, 1866, probably in Riley County, Kansas. She 2 CONC would have 2 CONT been 3 1/2 years old. Hulda Jane Crane was born January 2, 1868, and 2 CONC died 2 CONT February 18, 1868, at age one month, 16 days. Ida Elmina Crane was 2 CONC born 2 CONT December 26, 1868. She grew to womanhood and married Lou Worth. 2 CONC They had 2 CONT three children - Ross, Bessie and Lee. Ida and Lou were later 2 CONC divorced. Ida 2 CONT died December 11, 1950, in Longmont, Colorado, and is buried there. 2 CONC She was 2 CONT 81, lacking 15 days of being 82, when she died. Florence Minerva 2 CONC Crane was 2 CONT born August 14, 1870, and died August 28, 1871, at the age of one 2 CONC year, 14 2 CONT days. Morris Nelson Crane was born December 30, 1871, and died 2 CONC September 12, 2 CONT 1891, just 3 months, 18 days short of his 20th birthday. He was 2 CONC probably 2 CONT living in Milford, Kansas, when he died. We don't know the cause of 2 CONC his 2 CONT death, but we do know that Francis Lincoln Seley, husband of Clara 2 CONC Belle Crane 2 CONT Seley, paid some of the bills for his medicine and doctor's care. 2 CONC His doctor 2 CONT was Dr. J. D. McDonald, who was also a druggist. Francis paid $5.00 2 CONC on 2 CONT September 16, 1891, four days after Morris's death, but a balance of 2 CONC $3.35 was 2 CONT still owing on May 1, 1892 - $1.05 was paid soon after that, leaving 2 CONC a balance 2 CONT due of $2.30, with no record found as to when that was paid. Morris 2 CONC Nelson 2 CONT Crane is buried in Milford Cemetery, Riley County, Kansas. Bruce 2 CONC Armeda Crane 2 CONT was born April 31, 1873, and died September 29, 1874, living just one 2 CONC year, 2 CONT four months and 29 days. Cora Etta Crane was born February 4, 1875. 2 CONC She grew 2 CONT to womanhood and married Ed Wiley. She was living in Elgin, Kansas, 2 CONC in 1918. 2 CONT Victor Lawrence Crane was born January 20, 1877. (This article 2 CONC incorrectly 2 CONT listed his daughters as Effie and Bertha - they were Julian Albert's 2 CONT daughters.) Rose Annetta Crane was born January 16, 1879. She 2 CONC married Ned 2 CONT Sager, March 2, 1895. They had five children - Loyd, Bert, Fred, 2 CONC Gerald and 2 CONT Mildred. They spent most of their married life in or near Vining, 2 CONC Kansas. 2 CONT Ned died in 1942 and Rose lived with her son, Fred, in Vining until 2 CONC her death 2 CONT February 19, 1964, at the age of 85 years, one month, and three days. 2 CONC She is 2 CONT buried in Vining Cemetery. The twelfth child, Dora Elizabeth Crane 2 CONC was born 2 CONT November 20, 1880, on Walnut Creek, west of Randolph, in Riley 2 CONC County, Kansas, 2 CONT where all but the first three or four children were born. Dora 2 CONC married Ed 2 CONT Osborne. They had five children - twins Edna and Earl, Leta, Ruth 2 CONC and Arthur. 2 CONT Dora and Ed are buried in Topeka Cemetery, Topeka, Shawnee County, 2 CONC Kansas. 2 CONT Going back to the children born in Indiana, we know that Julian Albert 2 CONC Crane 2 CONT married Johannah (Hanna) Lindquist in Leonardville, Kansas. They had 2 CONC nine 2 CONT children, Edward William, Junia Bertha, Effie Elima, Albert Theodore 2 CONC Lester, 2 CONT Morrel Morris, Hanna Agnes Adelia, Manfred Julian, Violet Marie and 2 CONC Dorothy 2 CONT Eva. Johannah died in Riley, Kansas, on July 28, 1907, of cholera, 2 CONC leaving 2 CONT Julian with 9 children to finish raising. By 1918 he and the 2 CONC remaining 2 CONT children moved to Ada, Oklahoma, where he died in 1938. Clara Belle 2 CONC Crane, the 2 CONT third child, attended the Baptist Church near their farm with her 2 CONC family. She 2 CONT was baptized by the Reverand Charley Erickson, pastor of the Baptist 2 CONC Church on 2 CONT Walnut Creek, in or near Randolph, Kansas, in December 1879 at the 2 CONC age of 13. 2 CONT She attended the Nickleson School on Walnut Creek, and was presented 2 CONC a "Reward 2 CONT of Merit:, on March 20, 1884, by her teacher, C. G. Surngle. She 2 CONC lacked one 2 CONT month of being 18 at that time. John Meeker Crane sold the farm on 2 CONC Walnut 2 CONT Creek in 1885 and moved to near Bala, Kansas. Clara writes, "I was 2 CONC married to 2 CONT Francis L. Seley, October 17, 1886, at my father's home near Bala, 2 CONC Kansas, by 2 CONT Reverand Sheer." Clara and Frank had nine children, Grace Edith, 2 CONC Alva Lewis, 2 CONT Merrel Beecher, George Meeker, Flossie M., Iva Ruth, Francis Belle, 2 CONC Millie 2 CONT May, and Myrtle E. John first applied for a pension for his Civil 2 CONC War 2 CONT injuries (tender feet) on November 2, 1888, while still living near 2 CONC Bala, 2 CONT Kansas. His sister, Hester A. (Crane) Miller, who lived in Clifton, 2 CONC Kansas, 2 CONT wrote in an affidavit dated December 15, 1888, that she knew he was 2 CONC suffering 2 CONT from "disease of the feet" when he was discharged and came home from 2 CONC the Army 2 CONT in 1865. Julian Albert Crane, John's oldest son, wrote in an 2 CONC affidavit dated 2 CONT December 21, 1888, also stating that his father suffered from "disease 2 CONC of the 2 CONT feet, since his discharge, May 31, 1865, until the present date, and 2 CONC that at 2 CONT the time he entered the service he was a perfectly sound man, 2 CONC especially as to 2 CONT his feet." Julian was 28 at the time he wrote this and he was a 2 CONC resident of 2 CONT Bala, Kansas. John made another request for a pension on July 29, 2 CONC 1890, while 2 CONT still at Bala. He and Miriam moved to near Vining, Washington 2 CONC County, Kansas, 2 CONT sometime around March 1, 1891. We have a copy of an affidavit, 2 CONC written by Dr. 2 CONT H. E. Potter, in April 1893. By Dr. Potter's statements, John was a 2 CONC very sick 2 CONT man from 1891 to 1893, with a series of respiratory illinesses - la 2 CONC grippe, 2 CONT pheumonia, pleurisy, influenza, chronic brochitis, post-nasal and 2 CONC pharyngeal 2 CONT catarrh, and a strong tendency to diabetes. He was 5' 10" tall when 2 CONC he 2 CONT entered the Army, and the doctor now describes him as "cadaverous 2 CONC appearing" 2 CONT (skin and bones thin), and totally disabled. His request for a 2 CONC pension still 2 CONT was not approved. His wife, Miriam Elizabeth Morris Crane, died 2 CONC August 12, 2 CONT 1897, at Vining, Kansas, and was buried at Milford, Kansas. She was 2 CONC 55 years, 2 CONT 7 months and 4 days old when she died. John was 57 years old at that 2 CONC time and 2 CONT they had been married for 36 years. John answered a Department of 2 CONC Interior, 2 CONT Bureau of Pensions questionnaire on March 21, 1899, but still 2 CONC received no 2 CONT pension. On December 24, 1903, at age 63, John married Nancy Ellen 2 CONC Curtis, age 2 CONT 50, of Clay Center, Kansas, by Reverand Lydia S. Brock at Clay 2 CONC Center. Nancy 2 CONT was the daughter of Michael Morrisey and she was a nurse. Nancy's 2 CONC first 2 CONT husband, W. Henry Curtis, was also a Civil War veteran who had died 2 CONC June 1, 2 CONT 1896. Nancy and Henry were married on April 13, 1870, and had been 2 CONC married 26 2 CONT years at the time of his death. We do not know if she and Henry had 2 CONC children. 2 CONT A Declaration for Pension notarized by J. R. Worth on August 21, 2 CONC 1915, states 2 CONT that John had a dark complexion, blue eyes and dark hair. His 2 CONC occupation was 2 CONT list as a farmer. Finally, on November 4, 1915, (twenty seven years 2 CONC after he 2 CONT first applied) the Bureau of Pensions authorized a pension of $30.00 2 CONC a month 2 CONT to commence as of March 3, 1915. John died March 18, 1918, at his 2 CONC home in 2 CONT Vining, Kansas, at the age of 78 years and 15 days. He and Nancy had 2 CONC been 2 CONT married 14 years when he died. He had received his much deserved 2 CONC pension for 2 CONT only three years. Nancy applied for a widow's pension, with the help 2 CONC of 2 CONT friends and relatives, on April 30, 1918. Nancy Ellen Curtis Crane 2 CONC died May 2 CONT 20, 1932, at 80 years of age. She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, 2 CONC Clay 2 CONT Center, Kansas, with her first husband, W. Henry Curtis. 1 BIRT 2 DATE 3 MAR 1840 2 PLAC Jackson County, Indiana 1 BIRT 2 DATE 3 MAR 1840 2 PLAC Indiana 1 DEAT 2 DATE 18 MAR 1918 2 PLAC Vining, Clay County, Kansas 1 DEAT 2 DATE 18 MAR 1918 2 PLAC Riley County, Kansas 1 BURI 2 PLAC Milford Cemetery, Geary County, Kansas 1 FAMS @F640@ 1 FAMS @F943@ 1 FAMC @F634@ 0 @I2479@ INDI 1 NAME Mariam Elizabeth /Morris/ 2 GIVN Mariam Elizabeth 2 SURN Morris 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 19 DEC 1841 2 PLAC Jackson County, Indiana 1 BIRT 2 DATE 19 DEC 1841 2 PLAC Jackson County, Indiana 1 DEAT 2 DATE 12 AUG 1897 2 PLAC Bala, Clay County, Kansas 1 DEAT 2 DATE 12 AUG 1897 2 PLAC Bala, KS (Riley Cty, KS) 1 BURI 2 PLAC Milford, Geary County, Kansas 1 FAMS @F943@ 0 @I2480@ INDI 1 NAME Julian Albert /Crane/ 2 GIVN Julian Albert 2 SURN Crane 1 SEX M 1 NOTE J. I was turned down then, but I was drafted in 2 CONC the 2 CONT first draft on October 5, 1917. I was 24 years old, weighed 135 2 CONC pounds 2 CONT and was 5 feet and 7 1/2 inches tall. (World War I, or The Great War, 2 CONT started in Europe in 1914, but the United States Congress under 2 CONC President 2 CONT Woodrow Wilson, did not declare war on Germany until April 6, 1917.) 2 CONT 2 CONT I reported first to Camp Funston at Fort Riley, Kansas. I was there 2 CONC three 2 CONT weeks and did some training there. Then I was sent by train to Fort 2 CONC Sill, 2 CONT Oklahoma, to Camp Donnifan. There were approximately 50 men in the 2 CONC camp, 2 CONT and I was there for about six months. I was in Company F, 110th 2 CONT Ammunition Train. Four horses pulled each caisson (or ammunition 2 CONC train). 2 CONT Four men rode on each caisson, and two men rode on horseback, one on 2 CONT either side. The men drilled on horseback in the mornings, and on 2 CONC foot, 2 CONT hiking with full field pack in the afternoon. We also spent 2 CONC considerable 2 CONT time on the rifle range. 2 CONT 2 CONT About two months after arriving at Fort Sill, First Sergeant Fisher 2 CONT jokingly said, "Seley, you're lazy and no good for nothing else, so 2 CONC we're 2 CONT going to make a bugler out of you." I had never blown a bugle, but I 2 CONC was 2 CONT sent to a bugler's training school there on the post, and was taught 2 CONC by a 2 CONT private who had been in a bend. The school lasted one week, and there 2 CONT were 15 calls to learn. Reveille, Assembly, Mess Call (three times a 2 CONT day), Sick Call and Taps were the calls blown regularly. 2 CONT 2 CONT My grandfather, John Meeker Crane, died at Vining, Kansas, on March 2 CONC 18, 2 CONT 1918. I was on a six day hike at the time, and was told of his death 2 CONC when 2 CONT I returned to camp. I was given a seven day leave and came home on 2 CONC the 2 CONT train, but the funeral was over by the time I arrived. 2 CONT 2 CONT In May, 1918, my company received orders for overseas. We were 2 CONC shipped by 2 CONT train to New York -- 196 men in 16 coaches on a Union Pacific train. 2 CONC We 2 CONT were in New York for three days. We hiked to a camp about one and one 2 CONT half miles away and stayed there for two nights, and then we hiked to 2 CONC the 2 CONT ship. It was an English ship, The Justishu, (I am not sure of the 2 CONT spelling, but that is the pronunciation with long u's.) The ship was 2 CONC 13 2 CONT decks high, and carried 10,000 American soldiers, all heading for 2 CONC France. 2 CONT Our ship, the largest, led a convoy of 17 ships. We were the center 2 CONC ship 2 CONT with 8 smaller American ships on each side in a straight line. 2 CONT 2 CONT Six days out to sea, a storm came up. At the height of the storm the 2 CONC men 2 CONT stood in ranks by the lifeboats for about two hours. We became lost 2 CONC from 2 CONT the convoy during the height of the storm and we were out of convoy 2 CONC for 2 CONT about 72 hours. 2 CONT 2 CONT The seventh day out, during the storm, a buddy became ill, and I and 2 CONC the 2 CONT Company Clerk carried him to sick bay. He died a short time later of 2 CONT spinal meningitis. Me and five other soldiers who bunked near him 2 CONC were 2 CONT quarantined for the rest of the voyage. A total of 12 men died aboard 2 CONT ship of spinal meningitis, and they were buried at sea. Only the one 2 CONT buddy, Jody, was from my company. 2 CONT 2 CONT We landed at Liverpool about the first of June, 1918, after 14 days at 2 CONT sea. Me and my five quarantined buddies were first off the ship, and 2 CONC we 2 CONT were taken to an army hospital in Liverpool, where we were quarantined 2 CONC for 2 CONT 21 more days. They took throat cultures each morning. None of the 2 CONC six 2 CONT came down with spinal meningitis. The rest of the soldiers had sailed 2 CONC on 2 CONT to France. 2 CONT 2 CONT After our quarantine was listed, I was sent to Camp Whiteside, near 2 CONT Liverpool. This was called a casual camp, where hospital releases 2 CONC were 2 CONT sent. When a group was large enough, they were sent to France to try 2 CONC to 2 CONT join their own companies. Twice, I was ready and asked to be sent, 2 CONC but 2 CONT they held me there, saying they needed me as a bugler. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was transferred from that casual camp to Camp Mosley Hill, another 2 CONT casual camp about 40 miles south-west of London, and about one and one 2 CONT half miles from Winchester. We went by train, about 200 miles 2 CONC south-east 2 CONT of Liverpool. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was impressed by the English railway system. Each railroad car had 2 CONT three compartments, and six or eight people could sit in each 2 CONC compartment, 2 CONT three or four on each side, facing each other. The railroad tracks 2 CONC were 2 CONT in man-made valleys about twelve feet deep, and there were bridges 2 CONC over 2 CONT the trains at every crossing. I never saw any place in England where 2 CONC a 2 CONT car or pedestrian could cross a railroad track except on an overhead 2 CONT bridge. 2 CONT 2 CONT I saw very few cars in England at that time. There were mostly 2 CONC limousines 2 CONT and quite a few military trucks, both English and American. Bicycles 2 CONC were 2 CONT the main mode of transportation, for young and old. Men and women of 2 CONC all 2 CONT ages rode bicycles -- always in the streets, not on the sidewalks. 2 CONC Most 2 CONT cabs were drawn by two horses, but the big beer wagons were drawn by a 2 CONT four-horse team. 2 CONT 2 CONT Soon after I arrived at Camp Moslely Hill, one thousand men were taken 2 CONC off 2 CONT of a ship, probably docked at Southampton, and taken to an English 2 CONC army 2 CONT hospital located about a mile from Camp Mosley Hill and one half mile 2 CONC from 2 CONT Winchester. These were all American soldiers who were ill with spinal 2 CONT meningitis. (I don't know if these men were coming from New York and 2 CONT became ill aboaard ship, or were coming back from France.) These men 2 CONC died 2 CONT at the rate of fifty a day, and all one thousand men died. Every 2 CONC soldier 2 CONT at Camp Mosley Hill was set to work building coffins or digging graves 2 CONC at 2 CONT a military cemetery outside of Winchester. They buried fifty a day 2 CONC for 2 CONT three weeks, and another bugler and I blew Taps in unison each morning 2 CONC for 2 CONT their burial. 2 CONT 2 CONT There were three camps about four miles south of Camp Mosley Hill. 2 CONC The 2 CONT American soldiers would come to Liverpool by ship from New York, then 2 CONC go 2 CONT by train from Liverpool to Winchester, then march the four miles to 2 CONC one of 2 CONT these three camps. I, as a bugler, was selected at times to march the 2 CONT soldiers to one of these camps. We then rode, twenty five soldiers to 2 CONC an 2 CONT army truck, to the ships at Southhampton, another eight miles south. 2 CONC Then 2 CONT we rode across the channel to France. 2 CONT 2 CONT While I was at Camp Mosley Hill I met a red haired girl named Alice 2 CONT Carter, from Winchester. I was able to get an occasional evening or 2 CONT Saturday afternoon pass, and we would go to a show together. I had to 2 CONC be 2 CONT back to camp by 10 PM. I rode from camp to town and back in a horse 2 CONC drawn 2 CONT cab. Five or six men could ride in each cab. 2 CONT 2 CONT I recall that, sometime in August, 1918, I walked with some of my 2 CONC buddies 2 CONT from camp to a field where about nine men were thrashing wheat. Four 2 CONC of 2 CONT the men had one-horse-drawn two-wheeled carts. They picked up the 2 CONC bundles 2 CONT of wheat and put them on the carts, then drove the carts to the 2 CONC separator. 2 CONT Only one man could feed the separator at a time, and only one bundle 2 CONC at a 2 CONT time. It took four men to run the separator. One was the engineer. 2 CONC The 2 CONT engine was separate from the separator, and great big belts ran 2 CONC between 2 CONT them. It was a steam engine, and one man hauled water to it, and 2 CONC another 2 CONT man hauled coal. One man sacked the wheat as it ran from the 2 CONC separator. 2 CONT The sacks were a heavy white material, and each held two bushels of 2 CONC wheat. 2 CONT (That's only eight men - maybe one man was a supervisor.) 2 CONT 2 CONT I struck up a conversation with the engineer, and asked him how many 2 CONT bushels of wheat they could thresh in one day. He said on a good run 2 CONC they 2 CONT could thresh 225 bushels a day. He also said the wheat averaged 2 CONC thirty 2 CONT bushels to the acre. The engineer then asked, "How much do you Yanks 2 CONT thresh a day?" I said, "Well, on a good run, 2,500 bushels a day." 2 CONC The 2 CONT Englishman laughed and said, "Pull the other leg -- this one's got 2 CONC bells 2 CONT on it!" 2 CONT 2 CONT I explained to him that on a Kansas farm our engines and separators 2 CONC were 2 CONT two and one half times larger. The men had two-horse hayracks that 2 CONC held 2 CONT at least four times more than their two-wheeled carts, and four 2 CONC hayracks 2 CONT could feed bundles into the separator at the same time. An average 2 CONC Kansas 2 CONT threshing crew was 12 to 17 men, with 8 or 10 hayracks. All of the 2 CONT soldiers I was with were from the city, so they, as well as the 2 CONT Englishmen, thought I was a tall-story teller. 2 CONT 2 CONT I had never seen potato raising on the scale the English raised them, 2 CONT though. They had potato fields as big as 20 acres, and they had 2 CONC two-horse 2 CONT drawn listers that dug them up. The ground was covered by potatoes, 2 CONC and 2 CONT men, women and children came down the rows with sacks, and picked the 2 CONT potatoes up by hand. Potatoes were used for bread and beer, as well 2 CONC as 2 CONT for table use. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was at Camp Mosley Hill on November 11, 1918, when the Armistice was 2 CONT signed at 11 AM. We didn't get the word until 11 PM that night, and 2 CONC most 2 CONT of the men were asleep. There was no more sleep the rest of that 2 CONC night! 2 CONT The din was deafening -- guns were shot off, and the yells and cheers 2 CONC went 2 CONT on all night long. 2 CONT 2 CONT I remember at least three trips we made, by army truck, all the way to 2 CONT Southhampton. The first two were during the war, but the last one was 2 CONT after the war was over. It was a big Young Men's Christian 2 CONC Association 2 CONT affair, with a big dinner at noon, and games and races all afternoon. 2 CONT English civilians and both English and American soldiers were there. 2 CONC Some 2 CONT of my buddies and I entered the mile run contest. (George didn't say 2 CONC if 2 CONT they won or lost.) 2 CONT 2 CONT That Thanksgiving, three hundred of us were invited to services at 2 CONT Winchester Cathedral. We were told to shine our shoes and look our 2 CONC very 2 CONT best. We marched in formation the mile and a half to the Cathedral, 2 CONC and 2 CONT we were guests at the morning service. Then we marched back to camp 2 CONC and 2 CONT were treated to a big, delicious Thanksgiving di
