He would be so pleased when I could name them. 2 CONT The next memory is Christmas Eve...waiting for Daddy and Charles to 2 CONC come home from work...I believe they were painting houses ...it was 2 CONC dark and I remember when the door opened there they were with their 2 CONC arms loaded. 2 CONT I received some paper dolls and best of all two beautiful real dolls. 2 CONC One was a baby doll with blonde hair...nice and chubby, with smiling 2 CONC lips. The other one was more of a little girl doll, slender and with 2 CONC dark hair..I named the blonde one Blondie what else?, and the other 2 CONT one was Ruby in honor of the one I was in compatition with, my new 2 CONC Aunt Ruby, my Uncle Frank's new wife. I adored my uncle Frank as most 2 CONC of the cousins did. 2 CONT That was the best Christmas I ever had as a child. 2 CONT 2 CONT I do not remember when Charles left...but I do remember when his 2 CONT letters would come in the mail, and Mother reading them...and how 2 CONC brave she tried to be. 2 CONT 2 CONT One time he sent Mother some money to buy me a dress. I got to pick 2 CONC out the material..some of the scrapes are in a quilt I have that 2 CONC Mother made for me. 2 CONT The sad thing for me is that I can't remember how he looked or 2 CONC sounded..I was too young....but I remember how much I loved him.. 2 CONT 2 CONT The day that the telegram came, my brother Robert and I were visiting 2 CONC at a neighbors...I remember my father coming in to use the phone, and 2 CONC he had the telegram in his hand, and his face was red and he was 2 CONC crying, the grief was thick on him...he did not tell what had 2 CONC happened, but I knew it must be beyond anything I could think of....he 2 CONC was calling the 2 CONT Pastor, Elder Copeland...isn't that funny that I can remember his 2 CONT name?...Trauma sets things in the mind forever....he called 2 CONT Dr.Graybill... 2 CONT .Bob & I went home and Mother told us that Charles had been killed. 2 CONT I remember sitting on my mother's lap while friends came to call on 2 CONC us. 2 CONT There was a memorial service at the SDA church that was overflowing 2 CONT with people. 2 CONT 2 CONT My mother told me that when they moved out to Calif from Texas, it 2 CONC took all week. They were traveling in an open touring car, and had to 2 CONC camp along the way. Charles was just a little boy about two years 2 CONC old and was awfully sick. She thought she was going to lose him...and 2 CONC had his picture made..it shows a beautiful curly headed boy. She said 2 CONC when the 2 CONT picture was made, he was running a very high fever. 2 CONT 2 CONT On a trip to Oklahoma about 1980 or so, I asked my mother why my 2 CONC father would bring out the scrapebook he had made after Charles was 2 CONC killed, everytime someone came over...it was cards of condolance, and 2 CONC the telegram, and the form letter McArthur sent to everyone that lost 2 CONC a loved one....my father would pour over it and show the purple heart 2 CONC to everyone. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother told me that before Charles was drafted, all the boys in town 2 CONC had been called up, even younger ones than Charles...so my father 2 CONC decided to check on why Charles had not been called.....Well of course 2 CONC he was taken right away...so I suppose my father blamed himself for 2 CONC Charles' death. 2 CONT 2 CONT My brother, because of his moral and religious beliefs..did not carry 2 CONC a gun...he was a 2 CONT medic. Grandmother McCUTCHEON was Miss EDITH PACKWOOD, her parents 2 CONC were both born in Scotland (SAMUEL PACKWOOD & ELIZABETH TURNER), their 2 CONC parents emigrated from Scotland to Virginia. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother's father's name was JOHN McCUTCHEON, he was a Missionary 2 CONC Baptist preacher. (b. ca 1833 in Tenn.) 2 CONT GORDON served during the entire Mexican War. At the close of the War 2 CONC he was paid for his services in gold. He showed me the sack of gold 2 CONC once and asked me how far I could carry it. I asked him if he was 2 CONC going to spend it. He said, "Not without I need to." I do not 2 CONT imagine he ever spent it as he was a very well-to-do farmer, with no 2 CONC extravagant habits, and he drew a pension for his Mexican War service. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother's brother GEORGE McCUTCHEON, while a young man, came to Texas 2 CONC and married in Texas or Oklahoma and has several children. The remaining 2 CONC 10 lived to be grown and married. 2 CONT Next to WILLIAM, the oldest boy, is Mrs. MARTHA SUTTON, who was 89 2 CONC years old Feb. 16, 1926. She is living with her son LEE SUTTON at 2 CONC Drane. 2 CONT 2 CONT My father served as a soldier in exterminating the Seminoles and 2 CONC Creeks. 2 CONT In 1819, the Indians were run out of Georgia. In 1825, they were 2 CONC driven west of the Mississippi River. Father drew a pension for 2 CONC serving in this Indian war. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was born Oct. 9, 1858 in Coffee County, Tennessee. I have a brother 2 CONC (BENJAMIN F.) about 3 years older than I. He and I were great pals. 2 CONC Wherever he went, I wanted to go, so when he started to school, I 2 CONC wanted to go and I was just 4 years old when I started to school. 2 CONT Our schools were subscription schools. I do not think that we had 2 CONC any school building near where I was born (Hillsboro) at the time I 2 CONC started to school. The first three schools I attended were taught by 2 CONC married ladies in their homes without any school fixtures except crude 2 CONC benches. 2 CONT 2 CONT War was declared between the states in 1861. My two oldest brothers 2 CONC (WILLIAM & JOHN) enlisted at the beginning of the war. My third 2 CONC oldest brother (JESSE) ran away at the age of 16 and joined the 2 CONC Confederate army about two years before the close of the war. Father 2 CONC was not in the Confederate army, but his three sons were. 2 CONT 2 CONT Just before the close of the war a low class of men formed a clan 2 CONC called BUSHWHACKERS. They were a real terror in Middle Tennessee. 2 CONC They were thieves and murderers. They would go to a home and if they 2 CONC found the man of the house at home, they hung him to a limb of a tree, 2 CONC then stole everything of value and burned his house. The leader of 2 CONC these outlaws was CAL BRIXY (very infamous). He had an uncle, WALTON 2 CONC BRIXY, who lived about two miles from us, and was a good friend of 2 CONC father's. He let father know that he had heard the BUSHWHACKERS had 2 CONC threatened to get father and burn our house. He offered to keep and 2 CONC take care of anything we wanted stored. 2 CONT 2 CONT My people stored all the perishable things that we could possibly 2 CONC spare at Mr. BRIXY'S. What hardware we could do without was buried 2 CONC underground at different places. In the woodland either on father's 2 CONC farm or on my oldest brother's (WILLIAM) farm was a large hollow tree. 2 CONT Father concealed himself in that tree and would come home at night 2 CONC for grub. 2 CONT 2 CONT I had two grown sisters, (NANCY & RUTH), a 15-year old brother 2 CONC (ABNER), two younger brothers (THOMAS & BEN), father, mother and me at 2 CONC home. 2 CONT 2 CONT Father had a syrup mill and had just finished making syrup. He had 2 CONC three barrels of syrup. Also, he had a stack of crushed and pressed 2 CONC cane, and he covered those barrels with the pressed cane. 2 CONT 2 CONT One night about dark the BUSHWHACKERS came. I do not know how many 2 CONC but I think there were at least 30. They ordered supper, and mother 2 CONC and my two sisters (NANCY & RUTH) prepared it for them. Then they 2 CONC ordered rooms to sleep in. Mother let them have a bedroom and the 2 CONC dining room. Our living room was large with upstairs. Our family 2 CONC occupied that. Next morning while some were eating breakfast, others 2 CONC set fire to all the house, then they went to the barn, hitched up a 2 CONC team of horses to a wagon, loaded the wagon with corn and hay, drove 2 CONC out to the road, got father's team of oxen, and then set fire to all 2 CONC of father's feed and the barn, and all were burned. The BUSHWHACKERS 2 CONC had staked their horses around the crushed cane. After they were gone, 2 CONC my brother reported that one of the barrels of the syrup was partly 2 CONC uncovered. 2 CONT 2 CONT The day our house was burned, we moved in a vacant house on Uncle 2 CONC GORDEN McCUTCHEON'S farm. 2 CONT 2 CONT The war closed pretty soon, and our good neighbors turned in and 2 CONC helped father build a house on the site where the burned house stood. 2 CONC There was but little lumber to be had, so father and his help went to 2 CONC his woodland, felled the trees, hewed them square, cut notches at the 2 CONC ends, and built us a two-story, two-roomed house with a wide hall in 2 CONC between. Father could get but little lumber. He got enough for the 2 CONC lower floors and one room upstairs, and then we moved back home. 2 CONT 2 CONT While living on Uncle's farm and while father was building, my two 2 CONC youngest brothers (THOMAS & BEN) and I attended school at OAK HILL 2 CONC SEMINARY near Concord, midway from Tullahoma and Manchester. This 2 CONC was the first real school building I was ever in. 2 CONT 2 CONT I was born in the house that burned, and I lived in the new log house 2 CONC until I married. 2 CONT I attended public schools until I finished the public school course 2 CONC of that time. 2 CONT Then my youngest brother (BEN) and I attended a school of 5 months at 2 CONC PLEASANT HILL, three miles from our home. (HILLSBORO) 2 CONT We rode horse-back to school. 2 CONT 2 CONT My brother (THOMAS ?) taught a 5-months's school the next spring. 2 CONT Then when the Winchester Normal opened up, my brother (THOMAS) and I 2 CONC entered. We attended two years. Then both of us taught school that 2 CONC fall and went back to the Winchester Normal in the spring. We 2 CONC followed this course for two years. Then my youngest brother (BEN F.) 2 CONC wanted to be a Baptist preacher. The next entire year he attended the 2 CONC Normal and studied theology. I attended school the spring term, and 2 CONC one of my older brothers (ABNER) and I taught during the summer and 2 CONC fall at Gossburg, Tenn., three miles from Beech Grove, Tennessee, 2 CONC which is located on the Manchester and Murfreesboro Pike. 2 CONT 2 CONT We boarded at HOUSTON TODD'S. A week after the opening of school, I 2 CONC met a nephew of Mr. Todd's, THOMAS JEFFERSON TODD. We met often and 2 CONC by the close of the school we were betrothed. At this time he was 2 CONC teaching school at Bradyville, Cannon Co., Tenn. 2 CONT His father's home was near Bradyville, and he owned a farm 3 miles 2 CONC from Bradyville. He hired a man with a family to live in his house 2 CONC and take care of his farm, livestock, and fruit trees. He had the 2 CONC finest apple orchard of anyone anywhere near. He had a large cellar 2 CONC under his house and would store it full. He could keep apples from 2 CONC fall until the following May. 2 CONT 2 CONT Our schools closed a week before Christmas. Two days later he came to 2 CONC my home near Hillsboro and spent the night. Next day I went back with 2 CONC him to spend Christmas with 2 CONT two of his uncles families, the HOUSTON TODDS and B.L. SAGELEYS. 2 CONT 2 CONT The next spring I taught a school at Gossburg. My brother (ABNER) who 2 CONC had taught with me at Gossburg, taught the public shool at 2 CONC McMinnville, Tennessee, assisted by a cousin of ours, HENRY PYLANT. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mother and Father let brother JESSE, who had gone to Little Rock, 2 CONC Arkansas, married (MARTHA ALICE HOWARD 1873), returned to Tennessee, 2 CONC take charge of the home place, and they went to McMinnville (this must 2 CONC be about 1883 or 1884) to take care of brother (ABNER) and his small 2 CONC son DWIGHT, (b. 9/1879 in Texas) who was about 4 years old. 2 CONT 2 CONT Brother (ABNER) had come to north Texas about 6 or 7 years before 2 CONC this time and married. 2 CONT (1873 or 1874) His wife (LOUISE) died when their son DWIGHT was quite 2 CONC young. 2 CONT Brother (ABNER) carried his son home for Mother to help raise. DWIGHT 2 CONC JONES is now married, has a family, and lives in San Antonio. (1927) 2 CONT 2 CONT When my school was out at Gossburg, I went to McMinnville, home to 2 CONC Mother. 2 CONT On September 1 of that year (1885) I married THOMAS JEFFERSON TODD. 2 CONT He was teaching the public school at Mount Nebo, Cannon County. He 2 CONC arranged with the trustees of the school for me to finish teaching the 2 CONC school so he could gather his crop and make repairs. 2 CONT ON July 19 of the following year (1886) our daughter ETHEL was born. 2 CONT Twenty-one months later on April 3, 1888, BEN ALVIN TODD was born. On 2 CONC Ben's third birthday, IVAN was 9 days old; he was born on March 25, 2 CONC 1891. 2 CONT I was married Sept. 1, 1885; Ethel was born 7/19/1886; Ben A. was 2 CONT born 4/3/1888; Ivan was born 3/25/1891; and Orville on 5/12/1893. 2 CONT 2 CONT My husband died in the fall of 1895, and at the same hour the next 2 CONC morning father died. 2 CONT After my husband's death, an administrator was appointed to settle the 2 CONC estate. My youngest brother, BEN F. JONES, was president & founder of 2 CONC Dunlap Normal. (Dunlap, Tenn,) when T.J. died, I wired him. He came 2 CONC the day T.J. was buried, and he went with us to our sister RUTH 2 CONC MILLER, the mother of ROBERT MILLER of 405 N. Beaton St., Corsicana 2 CONC now. 2 CONT The children and I remained there until December 1, then we went to 2 CONC Dunlap. 2 CONT 2 CONT The next year I taught with brother. (BEN F) The next year I came 2 CONC to my sister's near Austin, Texas on the Colorado. (maybe NANCY) We 2 CONC stayed there about 3 months. I did not like Texas, and so on May 1, 2 CONC 1897, we entrained for Dunlap, Tennessee. I taught school there that 2 CONC year until ORVILLE took pneumonia. After he got well, I moved back to 2 CONC Prairie Plains near Hillsboro and taught school there the following 2 CONC year. Then I moved to our old homestead and lived there two years, 2 CONC teaching each fall. Then my oldest brother WILLIAM asked me to come to 2 CONC see after his household as his wife was dead. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Christmas before (1900) ETHEL had married CALVIN C. BROWN and had 2 CONC come to Cleburne, Texas. So I came again to Texas and have stayed. 2 CONT 2 CONT My two oldest sons are married. Ben married GLADYS KELLEY and has a 2 CONC home and business in Richland. Ivan is living on his farm two miles 2 CONC east of Kerens. When she was a very young child, she had 2 CONC fallen into or 2 CONT stepped into a lye pit or fire where soap was being made, and it had 2 CONC damaged her foot to the extent that one leg was shorter than the 2 CONC other. 2 CONT 2 CONT My poor mother had to live with a mother-in-law that, according to 2 CONC her, was not so nice, .very bossy, and demanding. Mother told me 2 CONC that Grandma Jones' family had owned slaves and that grandma had 2 CONC thought mother was her slave. Mary's grandfather, James Jackson 2 CONC Darnell and most of his family had indeed owned slaves. 2 CONT Cyrus Hubble was a survyer in Pike Co., Ark. when Mary Ann was born. 2 CONC On the census for 1860 there are no slaves listed and I doubt that 2 CONC Cyrus owned slaves. Their sentiments seemed to be with the North and 2 CONC not the South. Both of her brothers were in the Union Army. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1880 she was living in Tocodale, Coffee Co., Tenn with her mother's 2 CONC brother, James Jackson Darnell, Jr. She was 24 years old. 2 CONT 2 CONT My brother, Robert told me that she would stick out her cane and 2 CONC trip him. She would also hook onto him to bring him up close to her. 2 CONC He said that his memories of her are that she was rather mean. 2 CONT 2 CONT FROM THE NEWPAPER IN ESCONDIDO, CALIF. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mrs. Mary Hubble Jones, 87 resident of California for fifteen years 2 CONC and of Escondido for eight and a half years, passed away at the home 2 CONC of her son, Thomas Edwin Jones 1115 West Thirteenth Ave. , early 2 CONC Sunday evening after a long illness which had confined her to her bed 2 CONC for a year . Mrs. Jones was born in Pike County, Arkansas, on March 2 CONC 5, 1855, and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church. She 2 CONC was preceded in death by her husband, Abner H. Jones, seventeen years 2 CONC ago. Only survivors of the deceased are her son, Thomas Edwin Jones, 2 CONC and some grandchildren. Services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 CONC two o'clock at the Palm Mortuary with Elder Parsons of Vista 2 CONC conduction the consoling rites. 2 CONT Interment will be held at Oak Hill Memorial Park. 2 CONT 2 CONT A Note by Alice 2 CONT 2 CONT One day in the spring of 1992 I visited my grandmother's grave site at 2 CONC Oak Hill Cemetery in Escondido, Calif. The marker is broken and the 2 CONC grave site is in a run down condition. 2 CONT I don't remember visiting her grave at any other time. 2 CONT June 1993.... 2 CONT 2 CONT On my trip to Tennessee I went to the library in McMinnville, Warren 2 CONC Co.,Tn. 2 CONT I found a short notice in the newpaper Oct. 1, 1885 that Professor 2 CONC Abner Jones had married Mary Ann Hubble in the home of her brother 2 CONC T.J. Hubble. The ceremony was preformed by Hugh Lawson Walling. He 2 CONC was the uncle of T.J.'s wife Annie Walling. 2 CONT Mary Ann was getting a ready made family, because Abner had a child 2 CONC about 5 years old whose name was Dwight. Abner went from Hillsboro, 2 CONC Tenn. to Texas right after the Civil War and there he married a girl 2 CONC named Louise. She did not live long after their son was born and 2 CONC perhaps even died in child birth. So he returned to Tennessee so 2 CONC that his mother and father could take care of his young son. It was written by Valeria S. 2 CONC Vinson. 2 CONT I had phone contact with her on April 19, 1998. 2 CONT This is the article: 2 CONT 2 CONT The Etheldred Jones homeplace in southern Wake County was built about 2 CONC 1780 onland which was acquired through a grant from the State of North 2 CONC Carolina. 2 CONT A captain in the Revolutionary War, Etheldred (Dred) Jones was the 2 CONC son of Philip Jones of Edgecombe County, N.C. and the grandson of 2 CONC Henry Jones, whose will was probated in Northampton County, N.C. on 2 CONC November 14, 1733. 2 CONT 2 CONT Etheldred Jones entered land grant requests in 1778 for two tracts 2 CONC 'on both sides of Terrible Creek' in Wake County. By 1800, Jones had 2 CONC accumulated 7,849 acres in the vicinity of Fuquay-Varina. 2 CONT 2 CONT Captain Jones' place was a "Muster Ground" during the 2 CONC Revolutionary War. The story is told by family historian, Rugh B. 2 CONC Johnson of Varina that while Captain Jones and his men rested in the 2 CONC shade of a tree, he said "If I ever get out of this damn army, I'm 2 CONC going to come back here and build me a home." the house which he built 2 CONC stands today beside a tall cedar tree. The original house had a clay 2 CONC dirt floor, a massive stone fireplace, two large rooms, two 2 CONC anterrooms, and an attic. Th dirt florr was covered by a hardwood 2 CONC floor many years ago, but Joanna and Philip Proctor saw evidences of 2 CONC the hard packed clay floor while a heating plant was being installed 2 CONC in 1982. Joanna is a sixth generation descendant of Etheldred Jones. 2 CONT 2 CONT Etheldred Married Jean (Jane) Lane, daughter of Barnabas Lane of 2 CONC Halifax, N.C. Jane's parents died when she was young, and she was 2 CONC reared by her father's brother, Joel Lane of Raleigh. 2 CONT 2 CONT Etheldred died October 2, 1835 at the age of 86. He is buried in a 2 CONC small family cemetery near the house that he built.
