1 CONC was issued to all the heirs ordering them to apper on or before 3/1/1845 
1 CONC and agre to or object to the sale of the property.  It was shown that 
1 CONC William Waters, Moses Waters, John Waters, Hugh Shumake, Mary Shumake, 
1 CONC Levi Blackman and wife Isha, all reside without the limits of the State.  
1 CONC The Court ordered that if they did not appear, their consent would be 
1 CONC entered of record.  Letters were granted 6/5/1843.  The final return was 
1 CONC made 8/16/1845 and Kiddy Waters was given the widow's 1/3 and the other 
1 CONC 2/3 was divided among the children.  The children named were Ester, 
1 CONC William, Moses, John, Kitrey, Isha, Judity, James and Jesse, and the 
1 CONC widow named Kitrey Waters.  This probate file is indexed under the name 
1 CONC of James Walters.  The petitions show the name of Walters, Watters and 
1 CONC Waters.  Some of his descendants used the name Waters, while others used 
1 CONC Walters.

1 CONT - The family of Nancy Jackson has not been proven.  The Jackson family 
1 CONC was large in Marion County, SC.  Most of the deeds for the Waters had the 
1 CONC name Jackson somewhere in it.  The Jacksons of Marion County, SC, descend 
1 CONC from Edward Jackson, Sr., and his wife Anice Manning.  One of Edward's 
1 CONC sons, William R. Jackson, married a Miss Hayes.  The Jackson's, Manning's 
1 CONC and Hayes' families were all from Virginia.  William R. Jackson, Sr. and 
1 CONC Isham Watson married Hayes sisters.  When William R. Jackson was on his 
1 CONC deathbed, he asked Isham Watson to take care of his affairs and manage 
1 CONC his estate.  Isham Watson did apply for and was given letters of 
1 CONC administration.  The papers in the estate packet do not give the names of 
1 CONC the children.
1 CONT - William R. Jackson, Sr., married a second wife a few years before his 
1 CONC death.  There is a pre-marriage property agreement between him and 
1 CONC Charlotte Eagerton. The index to Equity suits shows a suit of the Heirs

1 CONT site is due to the very serious illness of Charlie Parker's mother, Mrs.
1 CONT Josephine Dunbar Parker, who is presently a patient at the Marlboro

1 CONT School, split their ties. The Methodists remained at Pine Grove and the
1 CONT Baptists moved to Beaverdam. Moses Parker was appointed by the Charleston

1 CONC About the same time that the Tristram Thomas family reached Marlboro, or 
1 CONC a little later, there seems to have come a number of substantial people 
1 CONC whose
1 CONT ancestors from the British Isles had landed in Maryland and Pennsylvania,
1 CONT but who now sought a warmer climate. Some of them came directly from
1 CONT Maryland, and others followed after a brief stay in Virginia and North
1 CONT Carolina. Their good judgment was shown in selecting the well-watered,
1 CONT finely timbered, fertile plains of Adamsville and Hebron. They, at first,
1 CONT gave to this choice region the designation which still cleaves to a
1 CONT portion of it "Beauty Spot." Among these settlers were Moses Parker, a
1 CONT man of substantial worth and firmness of character, and his brother John,
1 CONT a reckless, dashing young fellow who threw his whole soul into the
1 CONT patriotic cause, and of whom the tradition said, "He'd rather shoot a
1 CONT Tory than a snake." Moses was a serious-minded Christian man, with a
1 CONT family dependent upon him, yet spent part of the time in the patriot
1 CONT army. He was twice married, his second wife being Miss Thomas, as
1 CONT mentioned above. Poor, when the first marriage was contracted, spending

1 CONT command of the Marquis LaFayette, seeing his General wounded, took him in

1 CONT visited the land he had helped to free, the humble Ammons, with many

1 CONT blessed him for the unforgotten deed of kindness. The memory of Ammons is
1 CONT still a sacred legacy to his posterity, some of whom are yet among us,
1 CONT proud to have their descent from so true and brave a man, who has not
1 CONT only written his name upon the annals of his country with the warrior's
1 CONT sword, but has also left a pure record as a follower of the Prince of
1 CONT Peace upon the pages of the Old Church Book at Beaverdam, alongside that
1 CONT of his venerated father-in-law, Moses Parker. From the twenty-two
1 CONT children of the patriarch Parker have come numerous progeny of the
1 CONT excellent people of this ancient community. The only surviving son, Mr.
1 CONT Philip Parker lives near his birthplace, on land inherited form his
1 CONT father, in a vigorous old age, having seen his eightieth Christmas. He is
1 CONT yet brimming full of life and humor, himself a veritable patriarch,
1 CONT living joyously with the wife of his youth, who has honored him with
1 CONT sixteen children, eleven of whom are alive. From his lips the writer has
1 CONT received much valuable material, drawn from the stores of wonderful
1 CONT memory, still fresh and exact, of the traditions of the past, learned
1 CONT from the old people he knew in his boyhood and earlier years.

1 CONT innocently playing "Who Is It?" " Is it Julia or Ann?" Young Jephtha
1 CONT thought that he knew them apart, and likewise thought he loved Julia. Ann
1 CONT suspected that a courtship had begun, and on one occasion, when Jephtha
1 CONT made his appearance at the old Fletcher homestead, she got the start of
1 CONT her sister, placed herself "in the way" and sure enough "Jep drew up
1 CONT beside her," and began to whisper in her ear the soft tones of his tender
1 CONT emotion. Smiling at her success in the discovery of the secret she fled
1 CONT from his presence and sent Julia to his side, who, not long afterwards
1 CONT became Mrs. Jephtha Adams; the mischievous Ann in time Mrs. Noah Gibson.
1 CONT With only the State line and a mile intervening space between them, the
1 CONT twin sisters dwelt side by side until Mrs. Gibson went over the line that
1 CONT separates earth from heaven.

1 CONC To return to the traditions as remembered by Philip Parker it is said
1 CONT that in those dark days, when the party lines were strongly drawn, and
1 CONT "Tories preyed on Whigs, and Whigs chastised Tories," it came to pass
1 CONT that a Whig by the name of Reed came from camp "on leave of absence."
1 CONT This presence at home being discovered, a parte of Tories surrounded his
1 CONT house, cutting off his escape before they were seen. The poor man climbed
1 CONT into the loft of his humble dwelling in the vain effort to conceal
1 CONT himself. "He was ordered to descend and surrender, or the house would be
1 CONT burned over his head." In his extremity he consented to come down and
1 CONT surrender as a prisoner of war, if they would spare the house. But as he
1 CONT descended and approached the door they shot him dead. Tiding of the
1 CONT outrage rapidly spread in the neighborhood. A little band of Whigs soon
1 CONT collected and, pursuing the raiders, came upon them at another home, not
1 CONT far from where the Rev. W. K. Breeden now lives. So intent were the
1 CONT raiders upon their work of plunder, ripping the beds and filling the
1 CONT ticks with booty, that when their pursuers dashed upon them, they broke
1 CONT for the swamp of Beverly Creek, so hotly pursued by the Whigs that the
1 CONT spoil was recovered, and one of the Whigs captured a splendid horse
1 CONT which, of course, he never returned to the owner.

1 CONT ancestor, coming from that province about this time. He was the father of
1 CONT Thomas, Nimrod, Bright, and Mrs. Charles Manship. Thomas Lester was the
1 CONT grandfather of the present family in Marlboro County. Charles Manship,
1 CONT who was a wild youth until his marriage, became a Christian, went to
1 CONT school for a time, entered the Methodist ministry, and from him has
1 CONT sprung a respectable family.

1 CONC Tradition tells of a fine colony of Friends who came into this portion of
1 CONT Marlboro before the Revolutionary war; Ways, Mendenhall, and other sober,
1 CONT industrious, honest people who built for themselves a house of worship at

1 CONT reorganized, these men felt that slavery had become a fixture in the
1 CONT Southern institution that they religiously believed a wrong, and that its
1 CONT existence among them must hamper their enterprise, and possible corrupt
1 CONT the religion of their posterity - they sold their lands and left in a
1 CONT body for what was then called the "Northwest Territory." The house of
1 CONT worship was used in common by Baptists and Methodists for a season, but
1 CONT eventually went into the possession of the latter, where there has long
1 CONT existed one of their most influential communities. The Baptists
1 CONT ultimately staked down at Beaverdam.

1 CONT in eastern Marlboro the Scottish are worthy of mention. Two old men,
1 CONT natives of Scotland, are remembered by Mr. Parker, the brothers, John,
1 CONT and James McCoy (sometimes written McKay). John lived at the mill on Bear
1 CONT Creek, just within South Carolina. One of his sons, Daniel, became a
1 CONT Baptist preacher. With a rich, Scotch accent, his hearers were sometimes
1 CONT amused at his quaint way of putting religious truths. Preaching on the
1 CONT evils of pride, how insinuating, and deceptive, he sang out. "Why,
1 CONT brethern, I used to think I was not proud, but when I came to know
1 CONT myself, I found out that I was proud because I wasn't proud." Someone is
1 CONT said to have asked him why he read out loud his hymns is such a
1 CONT "sing-song sort or a tone," and he answered "Well, you all sing so badly,
1 CONT that if I don't sing it out, it won't get sung." Good old man, he "went
1 CONT West" in his old age, and took an interesting family with him.

1 CONT remained a branch of Catfish until June 15, 1768, when Rev. Joshua
1 CONT Edwards, assisted by Messrs. Gano and Brown, constituted a church

1 CONC In the year 1699 Tristram Thomas emigrated from Wales to the province of
1 CONT Maryland. He was the father of ten children, and died in 1746. His oldest
1 CONT son Stephen, came to North Carolina about 1750. He too had a large
1 CONT family, nine sons and four daughters. Of the other sons of Tristram,
1 CONT tradition says, some remained in Maryland and others went into
1 CONT Pennsylvania and regions farther west. About 1759 Robert, the first son
1 CONT of Stephen, came to Marlboro with his wife, Mary Sands, of Virginia, and
1 CONT was soon followed by at least three younger brothers, Lewis, Philemon,
1 CONT and Tristram. The two first settled among the colony of Friends in the
1 CONT neighborhood of Pine Grove, now Adamsville. Tristram settled at what is
1 CONT now McCall's Mills, which he is said to have first built. He afterwards
1 CONT became prominent in public affairs, took a leading part in the
1 CONT Revolutionary struggle, rising to a Major's commission. After the war, he
1 CONT was well known as General of Militia, an honored member of the
1 CONT Legislature, and a leader in organizing municipal affairs in the infancy
1 CONT of Marlboro District as it was first called. He was as prominent in
1 CONT religious affairs as in civil. He reared a large family, most of whom
1 CONT scattered, except that model of a Christian gentleman, and District
1 CONT officer, the late James C. Thomas, who remained and died among us at a

1 CONT to Illinois. Robert, the older brother, who settled near where the
1 CONT present town of Tatum is located, was long known as a Baptist preacher.
1 CONT The church at Salem was organized under his labors, also Catfish in our
1 CONT sister county of Marion. He died in Britton's Neck, of that county, while
1 CONT upon a preaching tour in 1817, in the eighty-fourth year of his age. He

1 CONT daughter, the grandmother of Colonel and Tristram Covington, is also

1 CONC His first wife was a Miss Sands of Virginia, and unto them were born 
1 CONC eleven sons and daughters.  His second wife was a Miss Thomas and a like 
1 CONC number of children blessed their home by the second marriage.  Aunt 
1 CONC "Mandy," as she was generally known, was the youngest of these 
1 CONC twenty-two, and unto her was given long life, being 87 when she died. Her 
1 CONC father was 82 at his death.  It is not often we see two lives covering so 
1 CONC long a continuous period, 164 years; the father being 77 years of age 
1 CONC when Aunt Mandy was born.  Those who knew her never had a criticism to 
1 CONC make of her life; it was one well spent, one we all may well covet.  The

1 CONT 1835, near where he died and had spent his entire life. Reared on a farm,
1 CONT from childhood was a quiet, painstaking robust youth, in young manhood
1 CONT was studious and attentive to books, early in life he developed an
1 CONT unusual love for mathematics, especially geometry and surveying, which he
1 CONT pursued for many years. After the Civil War, when chaos and financial
1 CONT ruin threatened the South, very many large estates had to be surveyed,
1 CONT divided and sold, and Captain Parker, as surveyor did this work, and
1 CONT perhaps knew more about the geography of Marlboro County than any man in
1 CONT it. He was accurate, reliable and honourable, and more than once was
1 CONT complimented by the judges of the courts for his straightforward
1 CONT testimony, when as a witness in real estate disputes.

1 CONC When the dark war clouds of 1860-61 hung over this fair southland John R.
1 CONT Parker, as lieutenant n Company G, Eight South Carolina Regiment, marched
1 CONT to the front, and for four long years he faced the guns or the enemy and
1 CONT endured the privations and hardships incident to that terrible struggle
1 CONT was promoted to captaincy of his company, which position he held when his
1 CONT command laid down their arms. His comrades in war all say that never did
1 CONT Capt. Parker shirk his whole duty, and would never command his men to go
1 CONT where he was unwilling to lead them. Company G was n many of the most
1 CONT desperate engagements of that civil conflict, as much of that four years
1 CONT of war service was in Virginia and Pennsylvania. Capt. Parker was
1 CONT desperately wounded in the battles of Gettysburg, Manassas, and Lexington
1 CONT and went down to his grave a cripple from the effects of those wounds.
1 CONT Captain Paker learned much about surveying on his own and his
1 CONT instruments; his transit and level, are in the possession of his
1 CONT grandson, Charlie Parker. The instruments are over 100 years old and have
1 CONT been appraised at a price which Mr. Parker does not wish to be known.

1 CONT on April 12, 1970 when the Church has its homecoming in connection with
