The earliest known town record 1 CONC inscribed after the resettlement was written by him regarding a town 1 CONC meeting held in June, 1678. 1 CONT Groton survived through Queen Anne's War and Lovewell's War. He 1 CONC graduated at Magdalene College, Cambridge University in 1625, as master 1 CONC of arts, and taught there for a short period, and was ordained by the 1 CONC Bishop of Norwich in 1627. September 1 CONC 2, 1635, he was made a freeman, and September 18, 1635, he with 1 CONC twenty-nine others, founded Hingham (the name of which was changed from 1 CONC Bear Cove), Massachusetts, formally drawing their house lots upon that 1 CONC day. From, 1635 to 1679, forty-four years, he preached in Hingham, 1 CONC according to the memorial tablet now in the church, which was open for 1 CONC public worship January 8, 1682, the land being donated by Captain Joshua 1 CONC Hobart, Peter's youngest brother. 1 CONT Peter was an independent and spirited clergyman, and espoused 1 CONC somewhat too warmly his late sovereign's cause and English customs 1 CONC generally, which occasionally brought him up before the general court to 1 CONC answer for his outspoken opinions. In 1646 he was fined -20 for 1 CONC "seditious practices and derogation of and contempt for authority" and 1 CONC was "bound to his good behavior." He defended his brothers Joshua, Edmund 1 CONC and Thomas against charges of insubordination, preferred by Lieutenant 1 CONC Anthony Eames, commanding officer of the "train band," and a member of 1 CONC Rev. He graduated in 1626, and soon after was engaged in teaching a 1 CONC Grammar school. While thus employed, he lodged in the house of a 1 CONC clergyman of the Established Church, who though not friendly to his 1 CONC Puritan ideas, sometimes engaged young Hobart to preach for him. 1 CONT In 1627 he was ordained a Minister of the Gospel by the Right 1 CONC Reverend Bishop of Norwich, Dr. Joseph Hall. In the ensuing eight years 1 CONC and more, he preached in several towns as he had opportunity, and last at 1 CONC Haverhill 1 CONT in Suffolk County, about twenty miles southeast of Cambridge. 1 CONT He had also identified himself with the Puritans, and this subjected 1 CONC him to the impositions and persecutions of the prelacy,--and though his 1 CONC foes 1 CONT admitted that he possessed fine abilities, they made him in various ways 1 CONC feel their hostility. 1 CONT He determined therefore to leave England and remove to America, 1 CONC whither his parents, brothers and sisters had already gone. Accordingly 1 CONC in the 1 CONT month of April he embarked, and after a tedious voyage and constant 1 CONC sickness, arrived at Charlestown. 1 CONT In his Journal he says--"I, with my wife and four children, came 1 CONC safely to New England, June 8, 1635. Forever praised be the God of 1 CONC Heaven, my God 1 CONT and my King." He received a cordial welcome from his kindred and friends 1 CONC who had preceded him. Amond those who came to help build up the cause of 1 CONC a better Christianity, was Peter Hobart--that distinuished friend of 1 CONC liberty. On his arrival here, he was but little over thirty yers of age, 1 CONC in the full vigor of manhood, possessed of great activity of mind, and 1 CONC distinguished for independence of character. As a scholar he was eminent 1 CONC for intellectual acumen, indefatigable industy and various acquirements." 1 CONT He united with the Church in Charlestown August 30th, and his wife 1 CONC and children remained there until late in the autumn, or possibly through 1 CONC the winter--as one of his sons was born there, October 3rd. 1 CONT He soon received invitations from several towns to come and reside 1 CONC among them as their Minister. But he declined all, preferring with his 1 CONC friends to establish a new home at Bear Cove, now Hingham. It is said 1 CONC that he first landed there on the north side of the stream which flows 1 CONC into the harbor at that place, and that it was upon its banks, under the 1 CONC open canopy of heaven, that the first public religious exercises were 1 CONC performed. Here he gathered a Church, and here for the remainder of his 1 CONC life, he performed the duties of an industrious and faithful minister of 1 CONC the gospel. 1 CONT He was admitted freeman, Sept 2, 1635, and later in the same month, 1 CONC he was settled as the pastor of the Church. It is known that his salary 1 CONC in 1648, was seventy pounds, and the same for each of the two following 1 CONC years. In 1651, the town voted that he should have "five score pounds a 1 CONC year," and that appears to have been his regular salary for many years 1 CONC thereafter. 1 CONT The last eight years of his life appear to have been especially 1 CONC devoted to the care of the youth of his congregation, whose salvation he 1 CONC earnestly ought. In 1678, he became too feeble to preach, though he 1 CONC administered the sacrament of the Lord's Supper, and less than two months 1 CONC before his death, he assisted in the ordination of Mr. John Norton as his 1 CONC successor in the ministry at Hingham; then with a company of ministers 1 CONC and others Christians at his own house, joyfully sang the song of aged 1 CONC Simeon: "Thy servant now lettest thou depart in peace." Dr. Cotton 1 CONC Mather says of him, "His heart was knit in sincere and earnest love to 1 CONC all pious men; he admired the grace of God in all the good, though they 1 CONC were of sentiments contrary to his own." 0 @I3145@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth* /Ibrook/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 31 Aug 1608 2 PLAC Southwold, Suffolk, England 1 DEAT 2 DATE Dec 1645 2 PLAC Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts 1 FAMS @F048@ 1 FAMC @F070@ 0 @I3146@ INDI 1 NAME Joanna /Quincy/ 1 SEX F 1 DEAT 2 DATE 18 May 1695 1 FAMS @F107@ 0 @I3147@ INDI 1 NAME Edmund* /Hobart/ 1 SEX M 1 ALIA Edmund* /Hubbard/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1 Jan 1573 2 PLAC Snoring Magna, Norfolk, England 1 DEAT 2 DATE 8 Mar 1645 2 PLAC Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts 1 FAMS @F049@ 1 FAMS @F050@ 1 FAMC @F059@ 1 NOTE @NI3147@ 0 @NI3147@ NOTE 1 CONC Edmund Hobart, the first representative of the family in America, was 1 CONC born in Hingham, Norfolk County, England, in 11574.
