Her father was a regular soldier in the Revolutionary War. 1 CONC After the close of the war 1 CONT her father was engaged in the burning of charcoal as his occupation. 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1831, Jonathan Bushong and his wife moved to Indiana, making their 1 CONC home near Washington, Wayne County, living there for about two years. In 1 CONC 1823 they then made a home on government land in the NE corner of 1 CONC Hamilton County, Indiana. This was a tract of 80 acres and Bushong made 1 CONC extensive improvements, making a fine farm by the time of his death, 1 CONC August 10, 1843. 1 CONT 1 CONT W.A.T. Bushong says that his grandfather, Jonathan, ran a distillery of 1 CONC French wines, but he was so religious that he wouldn't let his boys 1 CONC whistle on Sunday. John Alexander Bushong was born near Staunton, August County, VA in 1 CONC 1828. Coming west with his parents to Indiana in 1831. He received a 1 CONC fair education for those early days, mostly secured by home study, or in 1 CONC the subscription school, which he attended for about a year. He joined 1 CONC the United Brethren Church when he was fourteen years old, and was 1 CONC barefooted on that occasion, wearing a pair of tow linen trousers and a 1 CONC flax linen shirt. For a time he was out of the Spirit, but was reclaimed 1 CONC in his twentiet year, and he then united with the Methodist church, as 1 CONC there was no U. Brethren church in his vicinity. Becoming an active 1 CONC member in that church, he was given a local license, and for thirty five 1 CONC years devoted himself to its upbuilding. 1 CONT 1 CONT Mr. Bushong married March 13, 1851 to Abigail Ruth Monroe. Two and one 1 CONC half years after she died in 1876, he married Martha H. Clark Crouse. No 1 CONC children from this union. 1 CONT 1 CONT He enlisted in 1862 in Company C, 99th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, 1 CONC serving until the close of the War and was mustered out at Camp Brooks, 1 CONC VA. After the war closed, he was an officer of the Guard at the General 1 CONC Hospital at Memphis, TN making a creditable record as a good, faithful 1 CONC soldier. 1 CONT 1 CONT He was practically self educated and possessed much native ability. His 1 CONC reading was wide and valuable and was well informed on matters of his 1 CONC day. John Alexandr Bushong, whose residence was at No. 615 N. LaSalle 1 CONC Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, respresented one of the old and honored 1 CONC pioneer families of Indiana. His father was Jonathan Bushong, who was a 1 CONC son of henry Bushong, whose wife was of French descent. Henry Bushong and 1 CONC wife migrated to this country from Germany just prior to the war of the 1 CONC Revolution. Another member of the Bushong family, a brother to Henry, 1 CONC came to this country about the same time, and these two are supposed to 1 CONC be the ancestors of all the Bushongs in the United States. They settled 1 CONC in the valley of the Shenandoah in Virginia, and Henry Bushong became the 1 CONC father of the following sons: Soloman, Henry Jr., Philip, and Jonathan. 1 CONC He had one daughter, Barbara Janes, who never married and died of 1 CONC consumption about middle life. Soloman early left Virginia and made his 1 CONC home near Cincinatti, where he passed all his remaing life, leaving at 1 CONC his death quite a numerous family. Henry Bushong located at Reading, PA 1 CONC where he operated a large distillery. His business was successful and he 1 CONC left a numerous family. His strength and bodily activities are still 1 CONC remembered as remarkable. After this, he came 1 CONC back to Cincinnati, taking the church at Walnut Hills. There he built a 1 CONC fine temple of worship and had a very happy pastorate. 1 CONT 1 CONT In Portland, OR, he was equally successful, building a $100,000 church 1 CONC and serving as its pastor for two years. It was located in eastern 1 CONC Portland, now known as Gresham and was located on Ninth and I Streets, 1 CONC "The Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church". The cornerstone was laid 1 CONC July 7, 1890. 1 CONT 1 CONT At Astoria, he held a two year's agreement and was a pastor at Seattle 1 CONC for one year. At one time they were 1 CONC called the King-makers. Several hundred years ago two brothers were put 1 CONC in a tower by their political enemies, and kept there 14 years. This 1 CONC tower has since been called The Bushong Tower. He also remembered having 1 CONC seen a 'Coat of Arms' in their familly, although he forgot what it looked 1 CONC like. 1 CONT Mr. Bushong was born in Eden, Ohio. He and Milton Markewitz formed the 1 CONC Bushong Printing company 37 years ago. Mr. Bushong sold his interest in 1 CONC the firm in 1910 and retired.
