Once in 2 CONT the unfinished attic they were skipping from one exposed rafter to 2 CONT the next and fell through the ceiling lath into an upstairs 2 CONT bedroom. This accident must have brought on some punishment. 2 CONT After passing all the required examinations for grade school 2 CONT teachers he taught for two years at the Fairview School at 2 CONT Amaranth, Pa. He was teaching there in April 1917 when the 2 CONT newspaper arrived telling of America's entry into World war I. He 2 CONT read this headline and story to the classroom and many seemed to 2 CONT doubt that America would really raise an army and send it to fight 2 CONT in Europe. That Spring after school was out Kenneth and his brother 2 CONT Ralph enlisted. Ralph went into the Army Air Corps and Kenneth into 2 CONT the Army Medical Corps. Kenneth trained at Camp Oglethorpe, 2 CONT Ga. and the graduates were marched to Lytle, Ga. to board a troop 2 CONT train for the ride North. Upon embarking in New York City he was 2 CONT among a detachment sent to Fox Hills on Staten Island. The U.S. 2 CONT Army was constructiong a huge Debarcation Hospital hospital there 2 CONT to receive wounded men returned from France. The area had once been 2 CONT used as a staging area for the Fox Film Co. which made movies 2 CONT there. They had recently moved to Hollywood to become part part of 2 CONT 20th Century Fox. So the newly constructed wooden hospital 2 CONT buildings were scrubbed clean and Kenneth became a Supply Sgt. As 2 CONT the shiploads of wounded began to arrive each time all hands were 2 CONT called on to work as long as necessary to get all the stretcher 2 CONT patients carried to their hospital wards. A photograph album 2 CONT began in that era shows some of the New York scenes and hospital 2 CONT views. The men had a small photographic laboratory they used for 2 CONT developing and printing pictures. At war's end the men got to help 2 CONT the recruiting Sgts. try to recruit new enlistees to replace those 2 CONT who wanted of course to return to civilian life as soon as they 2 CONT could. Kenneth was riding an ambulance that overturned on 2 CONT Staten Island. He had some head injury which was believed to have 2 CONT hastened the development of Parkinson's disease which plagued his 2 CONT life from the 1920's on. 2 CONT The annual Memorial Day Services in Buck Valley,Fulton Co., 2 CONT Pa. were one of his must attend events for the rest of his life. 2 CONT There the war dead in cemeteries at 3 and sometimes 4 Churches were 2 CONT saluted by a rifle squad and marching veterans. Actually Kenneth's 2 CONT grandfather Capt. William McKibbin had ridden his horse at the head 2 CONT of the Civil War Veterans in similiar services since the surrender 2 CONT at Appomattox, until time thinned their numbers. 2 CONT There were periods of treatment for several months at 2 CONT government hospitals for the rest of Kenneth's life. He would come 2 CONT home better for a time and enjoy the pleasures of a walk in the 2 CONT woods and practice the observation skills learned as a hunter in 2 CONT his youth. He delighted in hearing a squirrel approach as he sat 2 CONT motionless. Some years he subscribed to the Philadelphia 2 CONT Record and others to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. In the 1930's he 2 CONT enjoyed the daily cartoon entitled "The Toonerville Trolley That 2 CONT Meets All Trains" by Fontaine Fox. 2 CONT He was a good interviewer when he had the clear use of his 2 CONT speech and would often encourage an older person to talk of their 2 CONT youth. For example he once learned from Jonathan Cope that when Mr. 2 CONT Cope was about 5 years old one afternoon he heard the sound of 2 CONT thunder in the West. Jonathan hid in his fathers springhouse in 2 CONT Chester County Pa. and the sound carried to the Cope boy's ears was 2 CONT the sound of the cannons at the battle of Gettysburg. 1 FAMS @F000047@ 0 @I000091@ INDI 1 NAME Jessie Marguerite /McKEE/ 1 SEX F 1 OCCU Homemaker, U.S. Treasury 2 DATE 2 QUAY 0 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 NOV 1902 2 PLAC Buck Valley, Fulton Co., Pa. 2 QUAY 3 1 DEAT 2 DATE 09 JUN 1943 2 PLAC Washington, D.C. 2 QUAY 3 1 BURI 2 DATE 2 PLAC Methodist Cem., Buck Valley, Fulton County, Pa. 2 QUAY 0 1 NOTE Jessie Marguerite McKee enjoyed playing the piano as a young 2 CONT girl. The Seville family didn't care if he went 2 CONT to school or not and he had one year of hunting to his heart's 2 CONT content in the woods. This was a short term delight for a growing 2 CONT boy but his innate desire to learn did not let him use this one 2 CONT year as a pattern for his life. In later life he always spoke 2 CONT fondly of Aunt Venie Seville who lived in Hancock, Maryland and ran 2 CONT a restaurant. His public school experience began with his 2 CONT fathers telling him at age six in 1881: "When you go to school sit 2 CONT with Reuben Engle, he is a good boy and you won,t get in any 2 CONT trouble". He followed this advice and they were friends for life. 2 CONT His first lesson in history was about General Pope and the second 2 CONT battle of Bull Run or Manassas. He had to buy paper and books from 2 CONT the general store as the public schools in the 1880's in Pa, didn't 2 CONT furnish these. Another treat from the general store was oatmeal 2 CONT which was at that time imported from Sweden. This was a rare treat, 2 CONT for him, from the fat pork and eggs or pancakes that were the more 2 CONT common fare. As a young boy he and others would bring their 2 CONT wild game up to Jonathan Cope's farm where Logue McKee later lived. 2 CONT Mr. Cope would ship barrels of salted down rabbits, squirrels or 2 CONT turkeys to hotels in Philadelphia. In these days before 1900 it was 2 CONT all perfectly legal and a turkey would bring 25 cents and a rabbit 2 CONT 10 cents. With farm hands earning 25 cents a day, if they could 2 CONT find work at all, these were good inducements to a young lad. 2 CONT The long days when he worked as a field hand for farmers were 2 CONT sometimes relieved by a "Noon Spell" or as we might say today in 2 CONT the 1990's a lunch hour. When his employer gave him this break at 2 CONT noon he studied his school books in preparation for taking the 2 CONT examination to be a teacher. Between starting this self improvement 2 CONT task and actually getting a school to teach took seven years. At 2 CONT the sixth year he got a perfect score on every subject and the 2 CONT supeintendent had promised him a school. When the names of the 2 CONT teachers were read his was not among them. He asked the man and he 2 CONT said "Oh I forgot your slip is still here in my pocket". Well the 2 CONT next year he finally got to teach at the Locust Grove School in 2 CONT Brush Creek Township, Fulton County, Pennsylvania. The school 2 CONT building was new and the year was 1898 and he was 23 years old. He 2 CONT got through the year in good form as far as the teaching was 2 CONT concerned but his stomach was developing ulcer symptoms and he 2 CONT often just had a draught of stomach medicine for lunch. School 2 CONT records for 1898 showed that one visitor to the Locust Grove School 2 CONT was Alice Rosetta Hart. They were married by Reverend May at 2 CONT Robisonville on 17 Dec 1902. The previous Night there had been an 2 CONT ice storm and as they drove from Aunt Rachel Hart's farm to 2 CONT Robisonville they found numerous trees down in the road. The groom 2 CONT had his axe along and cleared the way. After the marriage ceremony 2 CONT they returned to living quarters over the spring house at Aunt 2 CONT Rachel's. As recently as 1996 the springhouse wall showed that it 2 CONT was once covered inside with wooden lath and plaster upstairs. This 2 CONT was undoubtedly a cozy honeymoon cottage for a time. The first time 2 CONT Frank Pierce Plessinger ever saw Alice Rosetta Hart she was walking 2 CONT from the main house to this very springhouse to get a bucket of 2 CONT water. They courted for several years before they were confident 2 CONT enough to marry and each had saved around $400.00. During their 2 CONT years on the Hart Place three children were born there. One was 2 CONT stillborn prematurely and and tearfully buried by the young husband 2 CONT in the garden near the springhouse. Amanda Hart later related this 2 CONT last story to Clyde B. Plessinger who passed it on to the author in 2 CONT 1994. Two children who lived were born to the couple at the Hart 2 CONT Place and 4 year old Mary and Baby Eugene moved with Frank and 2 CONT Alice to the neighboring Caleb Mellott farm in 1908. They purchased 2 CONT the farm for $700.00. Frank's teaching career had begun in 1898 2 CONT and for the following 2 years he taught in Bedford County Pa, at 2 CONT two schools there. One was named the "Fletcher's School" and the 2 CONT other "Barkman's". Teaching among strangers went well and with a 2 CONT new surge in self confidence he returned to the Oak Grove School in 2 CONT Brush Creek Twp., Fulton Co., Pa. He completed a total of seven 2 CONT years teaching before taking up Land Surveying which he had studied 2 CONT in a Civil Engineering course from The International Correspondence 2 CONT Schools in Scranton, Pa. This supplemented his income from farming 2 CONT the farm he and Alice had bought in 1908. 2 CONT By the 1920's he was doing small contracting jobs such as 2 CONT building a street bridge over a creek that flows north of the main 2 CONT street in Everett, Pa. When Lindberg flew across the Atlantic 2 CONT ocean in 1927 he heard the news of Lindberg's safe arrival while 2 CONT sitting in Church in Front Royal, Virginia. Front Royal is where 2 CONT the partnership of Gordon and Plessinger was constructing a 2 CONT reservoir for the town water system. His partner at that time was 2 CONT Alvey Gordon who later operated a memorial business with the Gordon 2 CONT sons. They supplied the Rock of Ages granite memorials. Frank 2 CONT Plessinger said that his share of the profit from that job got him 2 CONT a Ford car but then again many men were glad to work all summer for 2 CONT a Ford car. The Pennsylvania Game Commission was able to buy 2 CONT up farmlands cheaply at that time as the industrial age came on and 2 CONT mountain farms were not extremely competitive with more fertile 2 CONT regions. He hired on with the state in 1929. The surveying job 2 CONT lasted until he retired in 1940. During his years with the state he 2 CONT trained two assistants to be experienced surveyors. The first was 2 CONT Jim Richards who stayed on with The Game Commission until about 2 CONT 1937 when he left to work for the new Pennsylvania Turnpike 2 CONT Commission. The second assistant who stayed on until Frank's 2 CONT retirement in 1940 was Merrill Layton. Merrill stayed on with the 2 CONT State until his entry into the U.S. Army in World War II. In the 2 CONT 1930's often on newly acquired farms the workers would find an old 2 CONT farmhouse where the aged owners had died. The contents of cupboards 2 CONT and closets would be strewn about by relatives looking for 2 CONT something of value. Often old Sunday School lesson quarterlies 2 CONT would be the bulk of the reading matter left in this home. 2 CONT Upon retirement Frank Plessinger started to take an interest 2 CONT in a small ornamental tree nursery started by his son Clyde on his 2 CONT home farm in 1938. Gradually he enlarged the nursery and ran it 2 CONT until his death in 1956. No Sunday sales was always a strict rule. 2 CONT Upon his death the remaining nursery stock was sold to Frank's half 2 CONT brother Upton Plessinger of Fallen Timber, Pennsylvania. 2 CONT Around 1911 Frank purchased some Danzenbaker patented 2 CONT honeybee hives from the A.I. Root Company of Medina, Ohio. These 2 CONT were among the first movable frame bee hives in Whips Cove and they 2 CONT were eventually sold to Ross Garland. Frank always had a few 2 CONT colonies of bees on his farm until he died. 1 FAMS @F000048@ 0 @I000100@ INDI 1 NAME Alice Rosetta /HART/ 1 SEX F 1 OCCU Homemaker 2 DATE 2 QUAY 0 1 BIRT 2 DATE 07 JAN 1875 2 PLAC Whips Cove, Fulton Co., Pa. 2 QUAY 3 1 DEAT 2 DATE 02 DEC 1951 2 PLAC Whips Cove, Fulton Co., Pa. 2 QUAY 3 1 BURI 2 DATE 05 DEC 1951 2 PLAC Whips Cove Cemetery, Fulton Co., Pa. 2 QUAY 0 2 SOUR @S000046@ 1 FAMS @F000048@ 1 FAMC @F000175@ 0 @I000101@ INDI 1 NAME Ruby Roberta /MELLOTT/ 1 SEX F 1 OCCU Homemaker 2 DATE 2 QUAY 0 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 NOV 1927 2 PLAC Ft. After his brother 2 CONT in law Isaac Powell was killed on the Gettysburg Battlefield Abner 2 CONT decided not to answer the draft call. There were many young men 2 CONT who took refuge in the mountains at that time. There is a rock 2 CONT overhang on the Eastern side of Sideling Hill mountain West of 2 CONT Needmore, Pa. It is near a solid square formation called the 2 CONT "Rockhouse". The rock overhang would hold some heat from the 2 CONT daytime sun and the young men would crawl under it with some 2 CONT blankets for protection. The various families would take turns 2 CONT carrying some food up to their family members. 2 CONT There are foot trails along the tops of the mountains which 2 CONT are little changed since the time of Columbus. Abner Hart would 2 CONT walk the trail along the top of Sideling Hill Mountain and peer 2 CONT over into the Whips Cove Valley. If he saw the large bed sheet on 2 CONT the clothesline at his home he knew it was safe to come home for a 2 CONT meal and a little rest. 2 CONT Before the present Jerusalem and Whips Cove Churches were 2 CONT built in the 1880's there was only a school house for a place of 2 CONT public worship. It stood between the two present day Churches 2 CONT mentioned. One night Abner Hart had been seen in the vicinity of 2 CONT the school house by Captain Hull the draft law enforcement officer. 2 CONT As Abner lay quietly in the narrow crawl space under the school 2 CONT house floor he could hear Captain Hull and his men walking about 2 CONT overhead. Captain Hull was the only Republican in Whips Cove 2 CONT at the time and he was not too popular politically. He lived on the 2 CONT farm later owned by Nathan and Jane Mellott. In the 1930's this 2 CONT house was occupied by the Harry Hanks family. It was just South of 2 CONT the Clarence Engle home. 2 CONT On another occasion the Hart family came out of the school 2 CONT house after a Sunday morning service and saw Captain Hull watching 2 CONT fronm the top of a nearby hill. Abner tried to keep the outline of 2 CONT his mothers skirts between him and Captain Hull as he made his way 2 CONT into the Hart carriage. So up the road through Flickerville and on 2 CONT to their home they went and they were not pursued. The Civil War 2 CONT was coming to a close and Captain Hull would live among his 2 CONT neighbors afterward. The peace of that wartime Sunday morning in 2 CONT Whips Cove was not disturbed. Late in the fall of 1864 Abner 2 CONT Hart was threshing wheat on his father's barn floor. This barn 2 CONT stood close to the little Tonoloway Creek in what is in 1996 known 2 CONT as Pa. State Gamelands #65. The house site is referred to as the 2 CONT Nettie place by some of the local people. As Abner was threshing 2 CONT with the flail he saw Captain Hull and some other men coming across 2 CONT the creek on horseback. A man's horse reared its head just in time 2 CONT to take a bullet from a squirrel rifle, instead of the rider. Since 2 CONT the men were not injured the incident was probably reported as a 2 CONT horse dead and buried and no terrible manhunt followed. Abner in 2 CONT the meantime had scurried out the barn door toward Town Hill 2 CONT mountain and would not be seen in public until after the war ended. 2 CONT A close call would take place when a search of Abner's parents 2 CONT home was made. The soldiers searched the house from top to bottom 2 CONT and probed the straw ticks on the beds with their swords. One man 2 CONT peered into the attic area and saw nothing amiss up there. What was 2 CONT not obvious to the casual observer was that a false wall had been 2 CONT constructed in the attic just one rafter back from the end. Abner 2 CONT had concealed himself behind this false wall and was crouching 2 CONT there. Onions had been stored up there in the attic and the dust 2 CONT had been disturbed and Abner nearly choked as he suppressed a 2 CONT cough. When the peace of Appomattox came Abner worked at home 2 CONT for a time but soon decided to go West. He had Hart relatives in 2 CONT Hartford City Indiana. He worked there for a few years and married 2 CONT Louisa Lavina Cline on 30 Jan 1874 in Hartford City, Blackford 2 CONT County, Indiana. The story of Abner's 2 daughters being born 2 CONT in his fathers house in Pennsylvania and his later divorce have 2 CONT been covered in the notes on his wife. 2 CONT As far as Abner's later life is concerned he was a metal 2 CONT worker but not a full fledged blacksmith as was his brother 2 CONT Ephriam. Abner worked on farms as a laborer and his oldest daughter 2 CONT Alice would accompany him as they walked over the "Lockings" where 2 CONT Town Hill Mountain joins Sideling Hill Mountain. This was the trail 2 CONT over into the Licking Creek Valley. There were friends and 2 CONT relatives needing harvest hands and Alice would help the farmwives 2 CONT in the kitchen. It was likely on these long walks over the mountain 2 CONT that Abner would tell his daughter about the times he had walked 2 CONT these trails during the then recent war. My grandmother Alice said 2 CONT she always felt happiest when coming back across the mountain 2 CONT toward her Aunt Rachel Hart's home. 2 CONT A glimpse of Abner's personality is given by a letter from 2 CONT Jonathan Cope written from the Cope farm in Chester County 2 CONT Pennsylvania, in the 1890's. He is asking Ephriam Hart to try and 2 CONT hire 3 or 4 farm laborers to come to Chester County for the Fall 2 CONT harvest on the train. Jonathan Cope knew the people in Whips Cove 2 CONT well as he had lived there as recently as 10 years before. Anyway 2 CONT at the end of his letter he adds "Tell Abner he can come too if he 2 CONT leaves his mouth at home". 2 CONT Abner built a small house across the creek from his fathers 2 CONT home. He hoped for a reconciliation with his divorced wife until he 2 CONT died. This home was comfortable but lonely as far as his young 2 CONT daughter was concerned. In Abner's last illness he was taken to his 2 CONT brother Ephriam's home for the required care. Abner had been in his 2 CONT grave 50 years when one day my grandmother Alice asked me: "How 2 CONT would you like your potatoes tonight? I replied "Oh just with 2 CONT salt"! She looked very thoughtful and said "My father always liked 2 CONT them that way". 1 FAMS @F000175@ 1 FAMC @F000179@ 0 @I000501@ INDI 1 NAME Louisa Lavina /CLINE/ 1 SEX F 1 OCCU Homemaker 2 DATE 2 QUAY 0 1 BIRT 2 DATE 18 JAN 1857 2 PLAC Nottingham Twp. "There is this world and the next and the 2 CONT Iron Works". The listener could read some evangelistic message into 2 CONT this as it suited. 2 CONT She was married at an early age to Abner Hart who was 2 CONT somewhat older than she was. They moved from her native Indiana 2 CONT back to his fathers home in Whips Cove, Brush Creek Township, 2 CONT Fulton County Pennsylvania. There in William Hart's house snugly 2 CONT built into a hillside with the the first floor entrance facing the 2 CONT Springhouse and Sideling Hill Mountain and the second floor 2 CONT entrance on the up-hill side facing Town Hill Mountain their two 2 CONT daughters were born in 1875 and 1878. 2 CONT A young bride can imagine her older husband is more jealous 2 CONT than he really is. At any rate Louisa's mother Elizabeth Burton 2 CONT Cline came east to visit her daughter when baby Melissa was about 2 CONT one year old. Here mother and daughter seem to have determined that 2 CONT the economic prospects were not too bright with the young family 2 CONT living with their in-laws and no steady employment available in the 2 CONT area. At any rate Louisa Lavina Hart with her mother and baby 2 CONT melissa left for Indiana in the dark of night. The older daughter 2 CONT Alice Rosetta Hart was four years old and she stayed with her 2 CONT father. A year later Abner and his daughter Alice undertook a trip 2 CONT to Indiana to find her mother and sister and also to bring about a 2 CONT reconciliation. The 1880 US Census shows five year old Alice 2 CONT Hart from Pennsylvania living with the McIntire family as a boarder 2 CONT in Indiana. Abner on the strength of rumors tried to follow Louisa 2 CONT to places in Michigan where she was trying to establish residence 2 CONT long enough to get a divorce. On another similiar trip to the 2 CONT midwest Abner left Alice stay with a neighbor the Abraham 2 CONT plessinger family in whips cove. Alice in later life recalled 2 CONT awakening to the sound of the mourning doves at the Plessinger 2 CONT homestead. It was a sad sound for a little girl missing her father 2 CONT and mother. No reconciliation ever came about but Louisa came 2 CONT east at least two times to visit her daughter Alice. Once they were 2 CONT riding in a spring wagon and Louisa had given Alice some chewing 2 CONT gum which was a rare treat for a county girl in the 1890's. Abner 2 CONT looked at them and asked "Are you two chewing tobacco?". Alice did 2 CONT not see the adult humor in this and was humiliated. Abner kept some 2 CONT prized china and told Louisa that he hoped they would once again 2 CONT eat their meals on this as a family. This vain hope continued until 2 CONT he died in 1901. Louisa appears in a photograph of the Frank 2 CONT and Alice Plessinger standing outside their home, in Whips Cove 2 CONT Fulton County Pa., in 1910. At that time Louisa had gotten a 2 CONT railroad workers passenger pass from George Crance her third 2 CONT husband. When it came time for her to return to Indiana Frank 2 CONT Plessinger took her to Hancock, Maryland the nearest railroad 2 CONT station. He was getting her established with her baggage on the 2 CONT train when it started moving and the conductor wouldn't stop so he 2 CONT had to ride to the next stop which was Berkley Springs, West 2 CONT Virginia. Having most of the day to kill until he could get back to 2 CONT Hancock Frank called up the livery stable in Hancock, Md. and told 2 CONT the man where he had parked his horse and buggy on the street. The 2 CONT man stabled and fed the horse until Frank got back that evening. 2 CONT Louisa died in the waning days of World War one in 1918 in 2 CONT Monroeville, Indiana and is buried in the IOOF Cemetery in 2 CONT Monroeville, under the name of Crance. She was of a hopeful spirit 2 CONT to the end and had been planning a visit to California where her 2 CONT second husband still was living at the time. 1 FAMS @F000175@ 1 FAMS @F000177@ 1 FAMS @F000178@ 0 @I000502@ INDI 1 NAME Melissa Jane /HART/ 1 SEX F 1 OCCU Homemaker 2 DATE 2 QUAY 0 1 BIRT 2 DATE 01 SEP 1878 2 PLAC Whips Cove, Fulton Co., Pa. 2 QUAY 3 1 DEAT 2 DATE 05 JAN 1968 2 PLAC Ft. His 2 CONT father had a farm that had been in the family for several 2 CONT generations. The family once tried to run a pottery business but it 2 CONT turned out to be non-profitable and Jont helped to fill in the 2 CONT building site and cover up some old un-fired crockery that was left 2 CONT over. One of Jont's earliest recollections was that on a July 2 CONT afternoon in 1863 he heard loud sounds like thunder coming from the 2 CONT west. Being only four he took refuge in his fathers spring house. 2 CONT Through the effects of low hanging clouds the reflected sounds from 2 CONT the cannons at the "Battle of Gettysburg" had reached his ears. 2 CONT Similiar phenomena have been reported during 18th Century battles 2 CONT in Europe. Ever watchful for land bargains Jonathan Cope's 2 CONT father purchased 4 farms in Whip's Cove Fulton Co., Pa. Jonathan, 2 CONT when he was un-married, in the 1880's farmed one of them which was 2 CONT later owned by Will McKee and in turn his son Logue. It is in 1996 2 CONT owned by Reverend Davis. 2 CONT While living there as a sideline, especially in the fall of 2 CONT the year, Jont Cope would buy freshly killed game from local 2 CONT hunters. This was good news for boys who had little chance to earn 2 CONT money. For a large rabbit he would give 10 cents and a turkey was 2 CONT worth 25 cents in the 1880's pricing structure. Jont knew where to 2 CONT ship his barrels of salted game to Hotels in Philadelphia on the 2 CONT railroad from Hancock, Md. and it was all a perfectly legal 2 CONT transaction at the time. Jont's mother was acting as his 2 CONT housekeeper and in time Jonathan and "Kate" Hart set a date for 2 CONT their wedding. On 08 Aug 1885 Jont waited outside Ephriam Hart's 2 CONT house, which is in 1996 owned by Eugene Hart, and there was a 2 CONT convenient pear tree to tie his horse and buggy to. So time went by 2 CONT and Jont ate pears and waited and ate pears and waited. Eventually 2 CONT she came out and they were off to see the preacher. Jont would end 2 CONT the telling of the story with the line "and she has been keeping me 2 CONT waiting ever since". Jonathan and Kate sent their younger sons 2 CONT to Pennsylvania State College as well as Dickinson Trade School. 2 CONT One summer in the late 1920's he and Kate came up to Whips Cove and 2 CONT farmed the Frank Plessinger farm because Frank was contracting and 2 CONT building a reservoir at Front Royal, Va. with his partner Alvey 2 CONT Gordon. Skilled farmer that Jonathan was the farm was too small to 2 CONT make a profit and pay for the labor. 2 CONT In the late 1920's and through the 1930's Jont and Kate would 2 CONT winter in St. Petersburg, Florida. He had some citrus trees on his 2 CONT property and there was great pleasure given when they sent a 2 CONT basket of Florida fruit to their friends "up North". 2 CONT Jont's son Percy Cope recalled in 1943 that he was still at 2 CONT home when his father purchased his first and last automobile. It 2 CONT was shortly after World War 1 and Jonathan Cope bought a used 2 CONT automobile of good make. With at least two of his sons with him 2 CONT Jonathan drove the machine back to the Cope farm. By the time he 2 CONT had steered the unfamiliar vehicle home Jonathan was wringing wet 2 CONT with sweat. Having had his first driving experience at around age 2 CONT sixty the novelty of it all was too much and Percy said that his 2 CONT father never drove again. He kept the car and his sons drove it. 2 CONT Jont would be game enough to ride in automobiles the rest of his 2 CONT life as a passenger only. Around 1936 Walter Cope and his wife 2 CONT Florence were visiting in Whips cove the same time that Jonathan 2 CONT and "Kate" were there. They were together at the Frank Plessinger 2 CONT residence and when Walter and Florence decided to visit the 2 CONT Marshall Harts on the neighboring farm Walter only had room for 2 CONT Florence and Kate in his single seated car. Jonathan the ever game 2 CONT sportsman volunteered to stand on the car's running board and ride 2 CONT over that way. So off they went with the 77 year old passenger 2 CONT holding tight and standing on the running board saying "Be careful 2 CONT now don't throw me off". 2 CONT One summer in the mid 1930's Jonathan Cope had gone to 2 CONT Hancock and found his own way home by accepting rides from 2 CONT passersby. He said that he would never stand and use his thumb to 2 CONT beg for a ride but if they wanted to give him a ride as he walked 2 CONT hopefully along he would take it. Anyway he arrived in early 2 CONT afternoon at the Frank Plessinger house and Pauline and Lenore Hart 2 CONT were visiting as I recall. Rev. David Hollenshead was in the house 2 CONT demonstrating how his Servel refigerators could produce cold from 2 CONT the heat of a tiny kerosene flame which was a marvel in the days 2 CONT before February 1939 when Whips Cove didnt have electricity except 2 CONT a few farms with their own generator system. We were aware of 2 CONT Jonathan when he peered in the front window. In jest my grandmother 2 CONT Alice said "who is that stranger outside"? Rev. David said "Oh I 2 CONT think he looks harmless enough". So Jonathan came in and 2 CONT grandmother Alice said "Well you may as well hang up your hat and 2 CONT stay a while". Sensing the children present and a ready audience 2 CONT for fun Jonathan took off his summer straw hat and stood in his 2 CONT light cotton summer pants on his left foot holding his hat on his 2 CONT upraised right foot with his legs crossed, in the middle of the 2 CONT living room. After this pose delighted we youngsters David 2 CONT Hollenshead proceeded with his demonstration. He had Jonathan Cope 2 CONT holding the small glass tube and he could see how the heat from his 2 CONT hand caused bubbles to rise in the refrigerant and up to the top of 2 CONT the tube where they went back finally into the solution. Jonathan 2 CONT proceeded to ask the salesman "now shouldn't you have some kind of 2 CONT valve on this thing so you could put this solution on your food"? 2 CONT His response was that this process worked day and night keeping 2 CONT your refrigerator cold and freezing ice in the freezer compartment. 2 CONT The show was over for that day but we youngsters recalled for a 2 CONT long time the afternoon the Quaker man in his mid seventies played 2 CONT the part of a Vaudeville commedian to entertain some country kids 2 CONT on a warm summer afternoon. Jonathan and Kate spent their 2 CONT declining years in The Society of Friends Home in Kennett Square , 2 CONT Pa. just across the street from their son Percy's home. They still 2 CONT enjoyed their independence for a time but eventually ill health 2 CONT robbed Jonathan for his zest for life and he passed on in 1941. 2 CONT "Kate" would survive the World War II years in the same place and 2 CONT live on until 1953. 1 FAMS @F000435@ 0 @I001309@ INDI 1 NAME Eugene Hart /COPE/ 1 SEX M 1 OCCU Carpenter 2 DATE 2 QUAY 0 1 BIRT 2 DATE 27 OCT 1886 2 PLAC Chester County, Pa. 2 QUAY 3 1 DEAT 2 DATE 26 OCT 1940 2 PLAC Vineland, New Jersey 2 QUAY 3 1 NOTE DATE 2 CONT QUAY 0 2 CONT Eugene Hart Cope was an extremely good carpenter and well 2 CONT understood the wisdom of the saying "Measure twice cut once". Fulton County. 2 CONT When he moved to Kennett Square, Pa. he concentrated on 2 CONT jewelry and dropped the gun smithing. Still in the fall of the year 2 CONT the call of the wild could be heard and often Sam and Mert would 2 CONT come back to Whips Cove for the hunting season. They still had 2 CONT plenty of friends and relatives to share new hunting adventures 2 CONT with as well as re-live the tales of days gone by. 2 CONT During one such visit in the years just before World War I 2 CONT Sam was in Whips Cove for the hunting season and with his hunting 2 CONT companions re-loaded some shotgun shells. This was a time honored 2 CONT practice but in the intervening years Sam was forgetting his old 2 CONT gunsmithing skills. The new smokeless powder his companions were 2 CONT now using had greater explosive power and sam used the old black 2 CONT powder measure to re-load his shells. Having brought no shotgun 2 CONT with him Frank Plessinger was glad to loan Sam his old reliable 2 CONT shotgun with Damascus barrels. The term Damascus barrels refers to 2 CONT the layered steel construction of the barrel which is wound tightly 2 CONT together under pressure and heat. The outer layer would likely be 2 CONT engraved with fancy artwork. Anyway Sam was on location and seems 2 CONT to have fired at a pheasant which is a pretty exciting bird when it 2 CONT suddenly flies out of its hiding place. The excitement that time 2 CONT did not all come from the pheasant because the old Damascus 2 CONT Barreled gun exploded and Sam was left holding a piece of the 2 CONT barrel in his left hand and the remains of the stock in his right 2 CONT hand. Well sam had a few superficial powder burns and some smoke 2 CONT smudges on his person but no real harm seems to have been done to 2 CONT him. After all smokeless powder is only a relative term. To 2 CONT remember the occasion Sam and his companions picked up the largest 2 CONT fragments of the gun. They threaded a piece of rope through the gun 2 CONT pieces and for years the trophy hung in the old house on the 2 CONT Sherman Truax farm just south of Flickerville in Whips Cove, Brush 2 CONT Creek Twp., Fulton Co., Pa. 1 FAMS @F000449@ 1 FAMC @F000434@ 0 @I001347@ INDI 1 NAME // 1 SEX F 1 OCCU Homemaker 2 DATE 2 QUAY 0 1 BIRT 2 DATE 19C. 2 QUAY 1 1 NOTE DATE 2 CONT QUAY 0 1 FAMS @F000448@ 0 @I001348@ INDI 1 NAME Almerta /TRUAX/ 1 SEX F 1 OCCU Homemaker 2 DATE 2 QUAY 0 1 BIRT 2 DATE 12 DEC 1872 2 PLAC Whips Cove, Fulton Co., Pa. 2 QUAY 3 1 FAMS @F000449@ 0 @I001349@ INDI 1 NAME Mina Alma /HART/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE APR 1898 2 QUAY 2 1 DEAT 2 DATE 18 DEC 1918 2 PLAC Kennett Square, Pa. 2 QUAY 3 1 NOTE Mina Alma Hart died during the 1918 Flu epidemic. 1 FAMC @F000449@ 0 @I001350@ INDI 1 NAME Edith Rachel /HART/ 1 SEX F 1 OCCU Homemaker,Jewler 2 DATE 2 QUAY 0 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 SEP 1899 2 PLAC Whips Cove, Fulton Co., Pa. 2 QUAY 3 1 DEAT 2 DATE 14 APR 1993 2 PLAC Crossroads Kennett Square, Pa. 2 QUAY 3 1 NOTE DATE 2 CONT QUAY 0 2 CONT Edith Rachel Hart helped manage her fathers Jewelry Store on 2 CONT State St. in Kennett Square, Pa. until it closed in 1929. 1 FAMS @F000450@ 1 FAMS @F000451@ 1 FAMC @F000449@ 0 @I001351@ INDI 1 NAME Harry /CHANDLER/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 07 MAR 1893 2 QUAY 3 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1949 2 PLAC Kennett Square, Pa. 2 QUAY 1 1 FAMS @F000450@ 0 @I001352@ INDI 1 NAME Staats M. /PELLETT/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20C. 2 QUAY 1 1 NOTE Staats M.
