2 CONT Anglo-Saxon kings.  When Edward "the Confessor" died in 1066, William of 
2 CONT Normandy saw his chance for a successful invation of England.  He built a 
2 CONT fleet, attracted many knights, and obtained the pope's blessing.  He 
2 CONT gained victory at the Battle of Hastings and was crowned King of England 
2 CONT on Christmas of 1066. During the next few years, William presided over a 
2 CONT gradual redistribution of land in England. Saxon rebellions led to the 
2 CONT confiscation of lands, which the Norman Barons received.  As a result of

1 NOTE !Charlemagne began his career as King of the Franks but ended it as 
2 CONT Emperor of the entire Roman Empire of the West.  As king of France, he 
2 CONT gained victory over the Lombards of Italy, the Saxons of Northwestern 
2 CONT Germany, and a number of other neighbors.  He followed a policy of 
2 CONT friendship and cooperation with the Roman Catholic Church and was crowned 
2 CONT emperor by the pope on Christmas Day of 800.  Charlemagne's views were 
2 CONT liberal and enlightened. Although he reigned supreme, he recognized civil 
2 CONT rights for his subjects and a limitation on monarchic power.  He possessed 
2 CONT an unusual amount of learning and vigorously promoted education.  He 
2 CONT invited learned men to his court and established a Palace School where 
2 CONT noble's sons and clergy were educated.  His great dream was the union of 
2 CONT all the nations he had conquered into one great empire where the power and 
2 CONT learning of Rome could be united with the religion of Christ.  His 
2 CONT motivation for war seemed to be the converstion of the heathens to 
2 CONT Christianity.  He is considered the greatest figure of the Dark ages. He 
2 CONT died after four years of failing health, from an attack of plurisy.His 
2 CONT last words were, "Now, Lord, into thy hand I commit my spirit." He 
2 CONT nominated Louis the Pious as his successor in the empire, at the same time 
2 CONT assigning Italy to Bernhard the son of Pippin.

2 CONT English Justinian".  He had a love for justice, honor, and order in his 
2 CONT affairs.    At one point in his reign, he faced a declaration of war with 
2 CONT France and rebellions from the Welsh and Scots.  He decided that the only 
2 CONT way to overcome his difficulties would be to elicit the support of his 
2 CONT people.  In 1295 he called together a parliament consisting of 
2 CONT representatives of the nobility, the church, and the common people. This 
2 CONT "Model Parliament" marked the beginning of parliamentary government in 
2 CONT England, a system which has continued to the present day.    "What touches 
2 CONT all, should be approved by all, and it is also clear that common dangers 
2 CONT should be met by measures agreed upon in common." Edward proclaimed. He 
2 CONT restricted the power of the king by accepting the rule that taxes could 
2 CONT not be levied or laws made except by the consent of parliament.

2 CONT ascended to the throne in 871 at the age of 23. After a series of battles, 
2 CONT he succeeded in liberating England from the Danes, Europe's most terrible 
2 CONT warriors, who surrendered in 878 with a solemn oath to quit Wessex and 
2 CONT accept baptism.    During the following years of peace, Alfred rebuilt 
2 CONT cities, erected fortresses, trained militia, and encouraged the arts and 
2 CONT learning.  He reformed the administration of justice so effectively that 
2 CONT "a purse of money, or a pair of golden bracelets might .... be exposed for 
2 CONT weeks in a complete safety on the common highways."  In a era of ignorance 
2 CONT and barbarism, Alfred was an accomplished scholar and a zealous patron of 
2 CONT learning. He translated many historical and philosophical works. Both for 
2 CONT what he did and for what he was, Alfred has become known to all 
2 CONT generations of Englishmen as their best and greatest king.    On his death
