@NI0036@ 0 @NI0036@ NOTE 1 CONC Knowing the Bruners 1 CONT by 1 CONT Donald Lewis Osborn 1 CONT GEORGE PETER BRUNER 1 CONT Moves to Virginia and Becomes Sheriff - Pages 22 thru 29 1 CONT On 18 February 1797, George Peter Bruner (usually known - as in the 1 CONC deed - 1 CONT as Peter Bruner) purchased 836 acres of land in Hampshire County, 1 CONC Virginia for "Seven Hundred and five Pounds Current money of Virginia" 1 CONC from William Jackson and his wife, Elizabeth. The deed gives Peter 1 CONC Bruner's residence as Washington County, Maryland. The 1790 Federal 1 CONC Census for the State of Maryland shows one Bruner, a Peter, in 1 CONC Washington County. This would lead to believe that Goerge Peter moved 1 CONC there sometime between April 1789 (his marriage in Frederick 1 CONC County) and the time of the 1790 census; however, this Peter in 1 CONC Washington County in 1790 may not be the Peter of the 1797 deed for a 1 CONC son of his, also named Peter, is shown in the Frederick Reformed Church 1 CONC records as born in 1791. 1 CONT 1 CONT The 1790 cencus shows two Peter Bruners in Frederick County, so one of 1 CONC them may be George Peter. We can be quite sure, however, that in 1 CONC 1797, George Peter Bruner was from Washington County (which, 1 CONC incidentally, was formed from part of Frederick county in 1776). 1 CONT 1 CONT The land purchased by Peter Bruner in Hampshire, county, Virginia was on 1 CONC the Great CapCapon (the Great Cacapon River) and had been acquired by 1 CONC Mr. Jackson as 5 tracts of 92, 394, 160, 100, and 90 acres, 1 CONC respectively. Here in Hampshire County, Samuel Bruner was born to Peter 1 CONC and Catherine (Sinn) Bruner on 20 June 1808, the ninth of 10 children, 1 CONC all boys but one. Although Peter's land was in Hampshire County when he 1 CONC purchased it, it was in that part of the county which in 1820 was 1 CONC combined with part of Berkely County to form Morgan County. (Morgan 1 CONC County was in part of Virginia which became West Virginia in 1863.) 1 CONT 1 CONT Peter Bruner was a Justice of the Peace apparently in Hampshire County 1 CONC and was likely the senior Justice in Morgan County when it was formed 1 CONC because it appears he was the presiding Justice when the "Gentlemen 1 CONC Justices" of the county held court stating in 1820. His signature 1 CONC appears on the first several court records in an old book in Morgan 1 CONC County courthouse at Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. Soon after being 1 CONC the presiding Justice, Peter Bruner became the first sheriff of new 1 CONC Morgan County. Because his duties included the collection of taxes and 1 CONC other monies, he had to put up bonds totaling $90,000. The county seat 1 CONC town, popularly and presently known as Berkeley Springs, but 1 CONC officially known even to the present day as Bath, was a mecca for 1 CONC the wealthy from the cities of the East who came there to enjoy the 1 CONC healing waters of the springs and to gamble, drink, and "party." 1 CONC (The Indians knew of these springs for centuries and it is quite 1 CONC possible that here was located Ponce de Leon's elusive and so-called 1 CONC "Fountain of Youth," which he had heard about from the natives.) 1 CONT 1 CONT The county was virtually controlled by one family which obtained 1 CONC unfair 1 CONT court judgments against the common people of the county. We can 1 CONC suppose that Peter Bruner was the presiding Justice only because 1 CONC of his seniority as a Justice of the Peace for we find no indication 1 CONC that he was related to the "ruling" family of the county. A study of 1 CONC the land deed and county court transactions from the organization of the 1 CONC county in 1820 until the early 1830's reveals considerable information 1 CONC about Samuel Bruner's father, Sheriff Peter Bruner. Record Book 1 CONC No. 1 (1820-1832) for Morgan County, which is a court record book, shows 1 CONC on the first and second pages, over the signature of Peter Bruner 1 CONC (as the presiding Justice), that the March 1820 court appointed a 1 CONC commissioner to work with commissioners appointed by the Court of 1 CONC Hampshire County "to run the dividing line between that county and the 1 CONC County of Morgan..." Peter also signed the records for the 20 April 1 CONC 1820 court wherein Peter Bruner, Jr. was one of 9 men appointed as 1 CONC overseers of the poor for the county, and for the May, June, and July 1 CONC terms of court. The June record lists Peter Bruner as one of 1 CONC four Gentlemen Justices. The first court minutes not signed by Peter 1 CONC are for the August 1820 court but they include the following information 1 CONC about him: A Commission from under the hand of Thomas Mann Randolph 1 CONC Governor or Chief Magistrate of the Commonwealth of Virginia, with 1 CONC the seal of the said Commonwealth annexed thereto, Appointing Peter 1 CONC Bruner Sheriff of this County, was produced to the Court Where upon 1 CONC the said Peter Bruner Entered into and acknowledged Three Bonds with 1 CONC Cromewell Orrick, Daniel Bruner, 1 CONT Peter Bruner Jur. George Bruner, Peter Micheal, and Michel Ziler, each 1 CONC in 1 CONT the Penatly of Thirty Thousand Dollars each and There upon the said 1 CONC Peter 1 CONT Bruner took the several oaths proscribed by law. In Deed Book No.1 for 1 CONC Morgan County, we find recorded on pages 42, 43, and 1 CONT 44 the three $30,000 sheriff's bonds. These bonds each state that Peter 1 CONC Bruner was constituted and appointed Sheriff of Morgan County by a 1 CONC commission from the governor dated 29 June 1820. The bonds differ only 1 CONC in the duties shown for the Sheriff to fulfill. One requires his 1 CONC faithfulness in collecting, accounting for, and paying the taxes and 1 CONC arrears of taxes in the county. The second requires him to collect 1 CONC levies, fines, and forfeitures and the third pertains to his 1 CONC collecting officers' fees and paying them to the appropriate officers. 1 CONT 1 CONT Peter Bruner's name is mentioned in official records as he attended to 1 CONC his 1 CONT duties such as examining the jail, summoning jurors, and obtaining 1 CONC Sheriff's Deeds from people to settle debts. Peter's som, Samuel, 1 CONC wrote in his 1881 Sketch of the Bruner Race that his father did not 1 CONC like the way the laws of Virginia allowed persecution of the poor. 1 CONC According to Mr. Fred T. Newbraugh, a writer and researcher of Morgan 1 CONC County history, the county government at the time was run almost 1 CONC entirely by a family named Sherrard. He has stated that probably the 1 CONC most influential person in the newly formed county was Mary Ryan 1 CONC Sherrard Abernathy, widow of Robert Sherrard and wife of William 1 CONC Abernathy. Her husband, William, was a Justice of the Peace and on the 1 CONC county court. Her son, John Sherrard, also was a Justice and on the 1 CONC court, besides being treasurer of the School Commission, delegate to 1 CONC the general assembly, major in the militia, a lawyer, and a general 1 CONC storekeeper. Joseph Sherrard, another son, was the equivalent of 1 CONC Prosecuting Attorney, a militia captain, and a lawyer. Her son, 1 CONC William Sherrard, was a deputy to Sheriff Bruner. Perhaps the Sherrards 1 CONC twisted the laws to their own liking and caused the poor of the 1 CONC county to be jailed and/or to have their property sold or 1 CONC forfeited. There are several deeds wherein land is deeded to Sheriff 1 CONC Bruner. 1 CONT 1 CONT One dated 22 June 1821 for 662 acres was from George, Peter, John, and 1 CONC Jacob Tedrick, all of Morgan County, who were at the time in the 1 CONC county jail for a suit in which they owed $562.32. Another dated 1 CONC 12 December 1822 was from Jeremiah Haywood, of the town of Bath, in 1 CONC the jail because of a suit of John Young for $17.50 and suits of the 1 CONC Commonwealth for $5.59 and $4.42 plus costs. The land involved was a 1 CONC lot in the town of Bath with improvements "including a Taylor shop 1 CONC belonging to ary Sherrard." 1 CONT Peter Bruner's sheriff's bonds dated 3 September 1822 are signed by 1 CONC himself, William Sherrard, John Sherrard, Joseph H. Sherrard, and 1 CONC Gassaway Cross - some evidence that Peter was in a position to be 1 CONC pressured by the Sherrard family to be their puppet in their scandalous 1 CONC treatment of the people. The last sheriff's bonds for Peter Bruner are 1 CONC dated 2 September 1823. Apparently, as Samuel Bruner wrote, Peter could 1 CONC no longer fulfill his role in distressing the poor so he moved away 1 CONC from Morgan County. A Morgan County deed of February 1824 shows 1 CONC Peter Bruner in Ohio. Perhaps Peter Bruner's successors as sheriff were 1 CONC not quite as conscientious as he for in the County Court Order Book 1 CONC No. 1 (1820-1844), Morgan County, Virginia (a small handwritten book), 1 CONC we find on page 48 that "Barnet Lee, Sheriff" was before a grand 1 CONC jury on 12 October 1826, for extortion and for illegal constraint. 1 CONT 1 CONT Samuel stated that his father, the Sheriff, was name George Peter 1 CONC Bruner. 1 CONT Research for this book failed to find any mention in Frederick County, 1 CONC Maryland records that he was named George. His birth record shows no 1 CONC name other than his parents' and what appears to be his confirmation 1 CONC record in 1782 shows him as Peter jr. Only in the tax records of 1 CONC Morgan County, Virginia was "George" found and then the names were 1 CONC reversed as Peter George Bruner. The first Land Tax Book for Morgan 1 CONC County shows that in 1820 Peter George Bruner paid four cents tax on 1 CONC 10 acres valued at $30 located 2 miles southwest of the Court House 1 CONC on "dreams Sleepy Creek." Later years' records show the location of 1 CONC this 10 acres to be 2 miles southeast of the Court House which is 1 CONC correct according to maps of the county. Also in 1820, Peter Bruner 1 CONC Snr. is shown as owning 350 acres "on 1 CONT Gt Cacapehon W side," 450 acres "on Do. Mill tract" which included 1 CONC buildings valued at a thousand dollars, and 7 acres "adgoining Hall & 1 CONC Tyler." These 3 tracts were located 10 miles southwest of the Court 1 CONC House. 1 CONT IN the 1821 tax record, Peter's name is shown as "Peter Bruner Senr." 1 CONC for 1 CONT all 4 tracts of land noted above - which together were valued a 1 CONC $3,365.50 and were taxed for three dollars and two and 1 CONC three-fourths cents. Similar tax records appear for each year through 1 CONC 1824 - all showing Peter to be of Morgan County. Then in 1825, the 1 CONC records show that John Bruner of Ohio is the owner of 455 acres "on 1 CONC Mills Branch," 160 acres "on Waters CaCapehon," and 100 and 90-acte 1 CONC tracts adjoining the others; and that Peter Bruner, Jr., also of Ohio, 1 CONC owns the 7 acres "adjoining Hall & Taylor." There is a notation in the 1 CONC tax book that all these lands were obtained "from Peter Bruner Sr. in 1 CONC 1824." The above information agrees with the deed records, one of 1 CONC which shows that Peter Bruner Senr. and Wife Catherine, deeded some 1 CONC Morgan Ciunty land to Peter Bruner Jr. of Morgan County. At this time, 1 CONC at least Peter was in Ohio. He and only he signed the deed 18 February 1 CONC 1824 in Warren County, Ohio. A similar deed with Peter's signature 1 CONC certified the same date and place, conveys from Peter and Cartherine 1 CONC to John Bruner of Montgomery County, Ohio the 5 tracts of land which 1 CONC Peter purchased from William Jackson in 1797 (the total acreage had 1 CONC been 1 CONT revised). This deed mentions the mills - undoubtedly the ones which 1 CONC Samuel recalled in his Sketch. We think of land deed as cold 1 CONC uninteresting documents, but let's see what this one reveals about 1 CONC Samuel Bruner's boyhood home and his father' farm: Beginning at a marked 1 CONC hickory on the hill, east of the dwelling house and mills, thence 1 CONC running with a straight line down to a marked white oak on the bank of 1 CONC Cacapon River a corner of the first tract and corner to George 1 CONC Bruner, thence up the said River with the meanders thereof to three 1 CONC marked sugar trees at the mouuth of a run, cornor to Jacob Zilers land, 1 CONC thence up said run with the meanders thereof to a marked white oak on 1 CONC the west side of the run in said Zilers line, thence east with his 1 CONC line up a hill to a small heap of stones near a fence corner to the first 1 CONT tract and corner to Jacob Zilers land, thence with his land up a hollow 1 CONC to a large sink hole thence running east to a black oak near the foot of 1 CONC Cacapon Mountain thence north with a straight line to the beginning, 1 CONC these two tracts are now included in one and containing about Four 1 CONC hundred and fifty-five acres of land more or less. The other three tracts 1 CONC lying on the drains of Constant Run and the foot of Sideling hill all 1 CONC adjoining each other and adjoining Abraham Vanosdall, Aaron Harlan and 1 CONC Peter Bruner, Sr. land one tract of One hundred and sixty acres the other 1 CONC One Hundred acres and the third Ninety acres of land together with all 1 CONC appurtenances thereunto belonging. The Morgan County, Virginia land tax 1 CONC records reveal some information about Samuel Bruner's older 1 CONC brothers. We are not absolutely certain that these are his brothers, 1 CONC but the names are the same, they lived in the same area, some bought 1 CONC land from Samuel's father (George Peter), the brothers of Samuel would 1 CONC have been old enough to own land, and some went to Ohio as did George 1 CONC Peter. So we can pretty safely assume these are Samuel's brother's. 1 CONC George Bruner in 1820 owned 316 acres "on Wiggins run" and the Cacapon 1 CONC River and Peter Bruner, Jr. owned 598 acres on the Cacapon, the land 1 CONC of both men being located 10 miles southwest of the Court House, the 1 CONC same location given for George Peter's land. 1 CONT 1 CONT George Bruner is shown residing in Morgan County through 1828 but in 1 CONC Ohio after that. Peter Jr. is shown in Ohio first in the 1825 records 1 CONC and until 1834 when his 598 acres were "sold by the martial of the 1 CONC Winchester Chancery Court to Bruner & Ziler." (A Henry Bruner of Morgan 1 CONC County is shown owning 140 acres on the Cacapon 15 miles west of the 1 CONC Court House in 1822 but in 1829 the same land was owned by his heirs of 1 CONC Hampshire County, Virginia so he cannot be George Peter's son but 1 CONC perhaps he was a brother.) We have already noted that John Bruner 1 CONC of Montgomery County, Ohio bought the "home place" from George Peter 1 CONC Bruner in 1824. He continued to own and pay taxes on this land in 1 CONC Virginia at least until 1835. (Samuel Bruner's Sketch indicated that 1 CONC his brother John was the first of the family to go to Ohio.) 1 CONT 1 CONT The 7 acres which George Peter sold to Peter, Jr. in 1824 could be the 1 CONC same 1 CONT 7 acres for which a Peter Bruner obtained a land grant in 1811 in 1 CONC Hampshire County. This is listed in Sims Index to Land Grants in West 1 CONC Virginia, by Edgar B. Sims, State Auditor, Charleston, West Virginia, 1 CONC 1952. This index also shows that a Daniel Bruner (apparently Daniel, 1 CONC the eldest son of George Peter) obtained a grant of 41 1/4 acres 1 CONC in Hampshire County on the Big Cacapon in 1820. 1 CONT 1 CONT There is one deed recorded in Morgan County which mentions Samuel 1 CONC Bruner. When his father, George Peter. the former sheriff, was 1 CONC executor of the estate of a Jeremiah Thompson and was conveying 1 CONC Thompson's land to Jacob Zeiler, Peter signed in the presence of John 1 CONC Bruner and Samuel Bruner in Ohio. This was omn 10 May 1826. Samuel's 1 CONC age then would have been almost 18 years. Before we leave Morgan County, 1 CONC Virginia, let us glance at a most interesting autobiography writtin in 1 CONC 1822 by a very colorful man. Major Robert Bailey in writing this book 1 CONC of 348 pages described happenings and people of the town of Bath or 1 CONC Berkeley Springs, the county seat. Mr. Bailey was a well-known gambler, 1 CONC Berkeley Springs hotel-keeper and business man, political candidate, a 1 CONC keeper of mistresses, illegitimate father of twin boys, and a very 1 CONC descriptive writer. Included in his book, stating on page 330, he 1 CONC speaks of being in Berkeley Springs in August 1820 and says: 1 CONT I do say that the little town of Bath is a second Sodom in miniature; it 1 CONC is a den of the most unprincipled things that ever did convene in any 1 CONC country that I have known; it is a sink of the deepest corruption, where 1 CONC John Sherrard presides as dictator, and I do say, that the people of 1 CONC Morgan are as exemplary a set of people as Virginia affords, honest, 1 CONC religious and industrious. Even this book by Bailey intimates that likely 1 CONC Sheriff Bruner was not a puppet of the Sherrards for he states the 1 CONC following: I kept my door locked, the high sheriff came to the door 1 CONC but found no admittance. After he had gone, Tom Young, a duputy 1 CONC sheriff, a jailor, and a creature of John Sherrard's came around my 1 CONC house and a mob... Considering all the known circumstances about the 1 CONC Sherrard-ruled gambling town of Berkeley Springs and his unpleasant 1 CONC duty of confiscating property of the poor people owing back-taxes, it 1 CONC is no wonder that George Peter Bruner left his position as Sheriff and 1 CONC went to Ohio to teach school! In spite of the corrupt county 1 CONC government, George Peter Bruner and his family undoubtedly enjoyed 1 CONC their home and farm by the Great Cacapon River. The scenery afforded by 1 CONC the mountains and valleys and the river was most pleasing to the eye. 1 CONC Here George Peter and his wife, Catherine, reared a large family and 1 CONC here many of the children were born. It was here that George Peter 1 CONC Bruner gathered together his family "for the Last time on erth" and 1 CONC had "old Father Athy to come and preach for us," according to 1 CONC Samuel's Sketch. Incidentally, 1 CONT this preacher named Athy was probably the John Athy who owned land in 1 CONC Morgan County 12 miles west of the county seat in the 1820's. The 1 CONC Federal Census records for Morgan and Hampshire Counties show that in 1 CONC 1820 John Athy was the eldest of 4 Athy family heads. We are sure only 1 CONC that this preacher was Athy and can only speculate that he was this John 1 CONC Athy. Wouldn't it be interesting to know which church he 1 CONC represented? We wonder if he was of the German Reformed Church, the 1 CONC denomination with which the Bruners were so closely affiliated back in 1 CONC Maryland; or if he was a United Brethren preacher, for we find that 1 CONC some of the. Bruners who went from Morgan County to Ohio were connected 1 CONC with the United Brethren church there; or if perhaps he was a Methodist 1 CONC - for we have later indications that Samuel Bruner family was of the 1 CONC Methodist faith. 0 @I0037@ INDI 1 NAME James Judson /Chastain/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 5 Mar 1926 2 PLAC Lexington, Woodford, Kentucky 1 FAMS @F0325@ 1 FAMC @F0326@ 0 @I0038@ @NI0147@ 0 @NI0147@ NOTE 1 CONC Knowing the Bruners by Donald Lewis Osborn - The Move to Ohio - pages 29 1 CONC thru 43 1 CONT 1 CONT In Samuel's Sketck of the Bruner Race, he stated that he and his mother 1 CONC and his brothers, Peter and David, moved to Montgomery County, Ohio and 1 CONC that his father (Grorge Peter) and brother John preceded them there. This 1 CONC would lead us to assume that George Peter Bruner lived in Montgomery 1 CONC county, Ohio; however, in February 1824, he had his signature 1 CONC acknowledged, on deeds, by a Justice of the Peace of Warren County. He 1 CONC could easily have resided in Montgomery County but have gone across the 1 CONC county line to Warren County to Transact this business. It is puzzling, 1 CONC however, that this author did not locate any Montgomery County records - 1 CONC nor any other Ohio records - which mentioned George Peter Bruner. He must 1 CONC have been in that vicinity for we find records of several of his sons 1 CONC there. On 27 December 1832, Samuel Bruner, then of Montgomery County, 1 CONC Ohio purchased Lot No. 221 in Germantown from Michael Gunckel (and wife, 1 CONC Barbara) and Philip Gunckel (and wife, Elizabeth) for eighty dollars. 1 CONC Apparently this is the lot which Samuel mentions on which he built a 1 CONC "nice two story house with kitchen to it." This likely is correct even 1 CONC though Samuel's biography in 1881 History of Saline County, Missouri 1 CONC states that he moved to Indiana in the year 1832. 1 CONT 1 CONT Samuel's brother, Daniel Bruner, with his wife, Eleanor, and three 1 CONC children are buried in the Germantown Cemetery in southern Montgomery 1 CONC County, Ohio. The tombstones show that Daniel was born 14 March 1790 1 CONC (Samuel said it was March 16), and died 23 April 1878. His wife was born 1 CONC 1 October 1796 and died 21 August 1877. His children buried here are 1 CONC Mary Jane (Bruner) Neff (1833-1862), Caroline (Bruner) Duckwall 1 CONC (1820-1896), and Ellen M. (Bruner) Bear (1825-1867). Deed records of 1 CONC Montgomery County show that Daniel and Eleanor of that county sold 61.8 1 CONC acres of land to John Bruner of the same county for $700 on 30 January 1 CONC 1836 (Deed Book W, page 80). Micheal and Philip Gunckel, who sold a 1 CONC Germantown lot to Samuel, also sold one (No. 214) on 13 August 1833 to 1 CONC Jacob Bruner, brother to Samuel (Deed Book R, page 509). Jacob and his 1 CONC wife, Catharine, sold this lot to a Lewis Shuey the next year. Also, the 1 CONC Montgomery County marriage records (Volume A2, page 83) show that Frances 1 CONC Ann Cath. Bruner married Joseph M. Lindsley on 17 September 1839. This 1 CONC agrees with information on a postal card to Samuel Bruner from his 1 CONC brother Jacob in 1879. Also, some Indiana estate records show that Jacob 1 CONC had a daughter, Catharine Lindsly. John Bruner, Samuel's brother married 1 CONC on 7 February 1822 in Montgomery County to Sarah Harp (Book A, page 104). 1 CONC His estate records in the same county (Case No. 1988) show that the 1 CONC Administrator's bond was dated 20 February 1847, his widow was Sarah, and 1 CONC he had minor sons named Jabez, John, and Jacob. Several of the receits 1 CONC for payments from the estate indicate that John Bruner had been a 1 CONC carpenter. This agrees fully with Samuel's writings in which he states 1 CONC that he was apprenticed to his brother John to learn the carpenter trade. 1 CONT 1 CONT ========================edited to this point======================= 1 CONT 1 CONT Administrators of John's estate were Joseph W. Shank and Levi Bruner. 1 CONC Estate records of David Bruner (brother of John) in Indiana confirm 1 CONC that John's children were Levi Bruner, Mariah Shank, Jabez Bruner, 1 CONC John H. Bruner, and Jacob R. Bruner. A George Bruner, perhaps Samuel's 1 CONC brother, of Montgomery County purchased a little more than 2 acres in 1 CONC German Township on 3 March 1830 (Deed Book M, page 567). This agrees 1 CONC with the Morgan County, Virginia land tax records which show that he was 1 CONC residing in Ohio stating in 1828 or 1829. Even though no records were 1 CONC located in Ohio for George Peter Bruner, we find the above references to 1 CONC his sons Daniel, George, Jacob, John and Samuel. This accounts for 5 1 CONC of George Peter's 9 sons. Morgan County, Virginia court records of May 1 CONC 1833 indicate that Peter Bruner, apparently George Peter's son, left 1 CONC Virginia and went to Indiana sometime before George Bruner left 1 CONC Virginia. This then accounts for 6 sons. There were only 3 others - 1 CONC Henry, David, and Joseph - who will be mentioned later in Wabash 1 CONC County, Indiana. There was one daughter, Elizabeth, of whom we know very 1 CONC little. A brief record exists of the church affiliation of two Ohio 1 CONC Bruners. The History of Montgomery County, Ohio of 1882 (W. H. Beers 1 CONC & Co., Chicago), on page 43, gives a history of the United Brethren 1 CONC Church of Germantown and states that Andrew Zeller settled about a mile 1 CONC north of Germantown in 1805, on Little Twin Creek, and that: His house 1 CONC was one of the first established preaching-places among the United 1 CONC Brethren; the first organization of members was there effected.... 1 CONC Preaching-points were established at the homes of...Daniel Bruner, George 1 CONC Bruner,...and others... The first building erected for church purposes by 1 CONC the United Brethren denomination west of the Alleghanies was built in 1 CONC 1929, in Germantown. The board of Trustees were Daniel Bruner, Jonathan 1 CONC Spoon, Rev. Jabob King, Andrew Zeller and George Bruner. The lot was 1 CONC deeded to them 6 May 1829, by Philip Gunckel and wife. The building on 1 CONC Warren Street, occupied by the congregation for fifty years, is the 1 CONC original one though somewhat enlarged and modernized in after year... We 1 CONC can be almost certain that the Daniel and George Bruner mentioned 1 CONC are Samuel's brothers. Philip Gunckel who sold the lot to the church 1 CONC later sold Germantown lots to Samuel and Jacob Bruner. John Zeller, 1 CONC probably related to Andrew, and Jacob King helped appraise John 1 CONC Bruner's estate in 1847. Also, Andrew Zeller was the minister who 1 CONC united John Bruner and Sarah Harp in marriage in 1822. Although we do 1 CONC not know the religious affiliation of Samuel Bruner and his parents 1 CONC while they were in Ohio, we have a good indication that several of the 1 CONC Bruner family were members of the United Brethren Church at that time. 1 CONT Samuel Bruner in Indiana Let us leave Montgomery County, Ohio and 1 CONC follow Samuel on westward to Indiana. He lived in Grant County for a 1 CONC while. Then on 7 January 1841, Samuel was married, with a Grant County 1 CONC license, to Catharine Briggs by John H. Hull, a minister of the 1 CONC Gospel of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Her parents, Benjamin and 1 CONC Sarah Briggs, lived in Grant County but later moved to the 1 CONC neighboring county of Wabash. 1 CONT 1 CONT Samuel wrote in his Sketch that he bought 80 acres of land in Wabash 1 CONC County, Indiana. County records show that he purchased an 80-acre tract 1 CONC and a 30.9-acre tract and obtained patents dated 1 August 1845 from 1 CONC the Governor of Indiana. The 80-acre tract is described as the East 1 CONC one-half of the Southeast one-fourth of Section 19, Township 27, Range 7 1 CONC and the other tract was in Section 30 of the same Township and Range. 1 CONT 1 CONT At least four of Samuel's brothers - George, Henry, David, and Joseph - 1 CONC were 1 CONT also in Wabash County. George, like Samuel, lived in neighboring Grant 1 CONC County first, for we find that George Bruner of Montgomery County, Ohio 1 CONC bought land in Grant County in 1839 (Deed Book B, page 447) and sold it 1 CONC (with wife, Elizabeth) in 1848 (Deed Book G, page 131). According to a 1 CONC biography of their son, James R. Bruner, George and his wife, Elizabeth 1 CONC (nee Fogwell) Bruner (she a native of Maryland) moved from Virginia to 1 CONC near Dayton, Ohio and in 1839 moved to Grant County, Indiana, and in 1 CONC 1854 moved on to Wabash County. Also Samuel's brother Peter may have 1 CONC been in Wabash County for there in 1855, Peter's children (Francis 1 CONC Bruner, Jane E. Stewart, William Bruner, and John Bruner) were trying 1 CONC to collect a debt from Samuel Bruner and stated themselves to be the only 1 CONC heirs at law of Peter Bruner, deceased. Also, Samuel's nephews, Levi 1 CONC and John H., sons of John Bruner (who died in 1846), moved from 1 CONC Montgomery County, Ohio to Wabash County in 1851 and 1864, 1 CONC respectively. Two of Samuel's brothers, Henry and Joseph Bruner, lived 1 CONC near La Fontaine in southern Wabash County. We know from the above 1 CONC information that the Bruners seemed to move in a group of to follow each 1 CONC other from one state to another - from Virginia to Ohio and then on to 1 CONC Indiana. 1 CONT 1 CONT We should be most grateful to Samuel's brother, David - the brother 1 CONC who 1 CONT helped Samuel tend their father's sawmill back in Virginia - who, when 1 CONC he died, left no descendants and had as heirs one living brother, 1 CONC Samuel; his only sister, Elizabeth (Bruner) Golady, living; and the 1 CONC then living descendants of his 7 deceased brothers. David's 18 January 1 CONC 1881 will provided that most of his estate was to go to his legal 1 CONC heirs as provided by law. Perhaps this 76-year-old man chuckled as 1 CONC he thought of his 43 lawful heirs. Of course this made an interesting 1 CONC estate and after he died in January 1881, someone had to make the 1 CONC long list of heirs. This list is firm evidence of the names of 1 CONC children and some grandchildren of 7 of Samuel's brothers and was very 1 CONC helpful to this author in identifying the Bruners of Ohio and Indiana. A 1 CONC local history shows that David Bruner was born 18 December 1804 1 CONC in Virginia and settled in Wabash County in February 1839. Deed records 1 CONC in Wabash County show that David Bruner of Grant County sold 160 acres 1 CONC to Samuel Bruner of Wabash County on 5 February 1846 for $1,100 (Deed 1 CONC Book L, pages 306 and 307) and that on the same day Samuel and 1 CONC Catharine sold 95.99 acres to David for $2,000 (Deed Book H, page 1 CONC 102). At that time no wife signed the deed with David. At the 1 CONC time of his death, David owned 160 acres of land at Swan Lake, Emmet 1 CONC County, Iowa (Southeast one-fourth, Section 30, Township 100, Range 1 CONC 32) 1 CONT and a lot in the town of Wabash, Wabash County, Indiana. 1 CONT 1 CONT According to Wabash County deeds, sometime between 9 November 1850 and 1 CONC 18 February 1852, Samuel and Catharine moved to near Rensselaer, 1 CONC Jasper County, Indiana. As of those dates their family included 4 1 CONC children - Eliza Ann, Emeline J., John Samuel, and Linnie. Before 1 CONC leaving Wabash County, Samuel and Catharine bought and sold several 1 CONC ares of land, some of which have already been mentioned. Apparently 1 CONC they sold some ground for a school site; a deed of 8 October 1846 shows 1 CONC they received $2 for one-fourth acre sold to the Trustees of 1 CONC Pleasant Township for the 1 CONT Inhabitants of School District No. 1 (Deed Book I, page 205). 1 CONC Samuel and 1 CONT Catharine waited until after they had moved to Jasper County, before 1 CONC disposing of all their land in Wabash County. In 1852, they sold 80 1 CONC acres to a John Howell (Deed Book N, pages 140-141) and on 4 January 1 CONC 1854, they sold 80 acres to the Cincinnati Newcastle and Michigan Rail 1 CONC Road Company (Deed Book P, page 324). During 1850, 1852, and 1854, 1 CONC Samuel and Catharine sold 431 acres of Wabash County land for $4,500. 1 CONC Perhaps it is not the same Samuel and Catharine involved, but a Samuel 1 CONC Bruner "of Wabash County" and his wife Catharine sold 80 acres in Wabash 1 CONC County on 18 August 1855 to an Elizabeth L. Bruner (Deed Book R, page 1 CONC 79). Perhaps 1 CONT Samuel and Catharine returned to Wabash County for a visit and to 1 CONC sell this 1 CONT land. At any rate, it seems that they should have held the land a few 1 CONC more 1 CONT years. Elizabeth L. Bruner bought it for $240 in 1855 and sold it for 1 CONC $1,800 in 1 CONT 1862. At this time, incidentally, this Elizabeth was of Butler County, 1 CONC Ohio, 1 CONT which borders Montgomery County, so it is very likely that she was 1 CONC related to 1 CONT Samuel. 1 CONT 1 CONT We do not know Samuel's reason for moving from Wabash to Jasper County, 1 CONT other than the ever-present Bruner pioneering spirit, but perhaps he had 1 CONC in-law 1 CONT difficulties. This may or may not be true, but Samuel's grandson, Frank 1 CONC N. 1 CONT Bruner, has recalled a handed-down story of a practical joke which 1 CONC Samuel's 1 CONT brothers-in-law, the Briggs brothers, played on Samuel. The story goes 1 CONC that one time these brothers stole Samuel's horse and tied it in the 1 CONC timber for a week and that Samuel shot at them. Frank recalled another 1 CONC story, less serious, in which the Briggs boys showed Samuel Bruner an 1 CONC apple and told them it was peculiar so they called it "Sam's Peculiar 1 CONC Apple." These stories are interesting party because these are the only 1 CONC references to any brothers of 1 CONT Samuel Bruner's wife, Catharine Briggs, that any of Samuel's descendants 1 CONC have been able to tell this author. Research in Wabash County, census, 1 CONC probate, and cemetery records disclosed Catharine had at least 3 1 CONC brothers. 1 CONT In Jasper County, Indiana, Samuel and Catharine live some - and probably 1 CONT all - of the time near the county seat town of Rensselaer. They had 1 CONC brought 4 1 CONT children with them from Wabash County and their other 3 children - 1 CONC Jasper 1 CONT Newton, Orange Lemon, and Elmer Elsworth - were born in Jasper County. 1 CONT Around the year 1867, Samuel and Catharine and their unmarried children 1 CONT (their two eldest - Eliza Ann and Emeline J. - had married) moved from 1 CONC Jasper 1 CONT County, Indiana to Saline County, Missouri and lived a short distance 1 CONC west of 1 CONT the village of Fairville. Their farm was decribed as the West half of 1 CONC the 1 CONT Northeast quarter of Section 5, Township 51, Range 21 and contained 84 1 CONC acres. 1 CONT 1 CONT Here Samuel farmed and carpentered. He died in 1886. Catharine then 1 CONC made her home with her children in Kansas, Texas, and Oklahoma and died 1 CONC in 1899. 0 @I0148@ INDI 1 NAME Janice Denise /Selle/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 25 Dec 1966 2 PLAC Grand Junction, Mesa, Colorado 1 FAMC @F0366@ 0 @I0149@ INDI 1 NAME Cornelious Christapher /Selle/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F0367@ 0 @I0150@ INDI 1 NAME Bernice Francelia /Reynolds/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F0367@ 0 @I0151@ INDI 1 NAME John Carter /Beatty/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F0368@ 0 @I0152@ INDI 1 NAME James Robert /Dotson/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 25 May 1883 2 PLAC Toll Gate, West Virginia 1 FAMS @F0369@ 1 FAMC @F0370@ 0 @I0153@ INDI 1 NAME Bernita LeIslea /Dotson/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 4 Sep 1928 2 PLAC Grand Junction, Mesa, Colorado 1 FAMS @F0376@ 1 FAMS @F0377@ 1 FAMS @F0373@ 1 FAMS @F0375@ 1 FAMC @F0369@ 1 NOTE @NI0153@ 0 @NI0153@ NOTE 1 CONC Bernita LeIslea Dotson, had two children from her first marriage to Virgil 1 CONT Leroy Frank. Had Catharine's father, Benjamin 1 CONC Briggs, not died intestate, it would hardly exceed a paragraph. Much 1 CONC needs to be learned, especially since family tradition holds that 1 CONC Catharine was a cousin of some degree to President Abraham Lincoln (1809 1 CONC - 1865). Virgie Leone (nee Bruner) Brady recalls that someone once told 1 CONC her that her grandmother Catharine's mother was the cousin to Lincoln. 1 CONC This author's many attempts to learn the maiden name and parents of 1 CONC Catharine's mother, Sarah Briggs, were futile. A study of the Federal 1 CONC Censuses for Wabash County, Indiana and that county's probate records 1 CONC for the estate of Benjamin Briggs (probate records, Wabash County, 1 CONC Indiana. In County Clerk's office, Wabash, Indiana, Box 3, Case 14), 1 CONC marriage and tombstone records, and imformation from two of Catharine's 1 CONC sister Jane's granddaughters (Miss Blanche Smith of Lincoln, Nebraska 1 CONC and Mrs. Geneva Ferrero of Lancaster, California) provided information 1 CONC for the following genealogy of Benjamin's Family: 1 CONT 1 CONT There was a clue in the estate papers for Benjamin Briggs that he and his 1 CONC ancestors may have been from Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. According 1 CONC to the records, Benjamin had a claim of $80 against the estate of 1 CONC Jonathan S. Briggs, deseased, of Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania. During 1 CONC his lifetime, Benjamin had transferred in writing this claim to his son 1 CONC Watson. Although Benjamin's estate had been settled in 1870 with his son 1 CONC James T. Briggs as administrator, the estate was opened again in 1877 so 1 CONC that Watson Briggs could be administrator and, in that capacity, collect 1 CONC his claim from the estate in Pennsylvania. 1 CONT 1 CONT Although the Jonathan S. Briggs estate records in Huntingdon County 1 CONC (estate Records, Huntingdon County, Pa., in courthouse, Huntingdon, 1 CONC Pa. "Accounts and Reports, Book No. 5," pages 37, 38 and 365) show the 1 CONC payment of Watson's claim, there was no mention of the relationship of 1 CONC Jonathan S. to Benjamin. Other records examined in Huntingdon County - 1 CONC land deeds, wills, and even a printed genealogy (Moyer, Ruth Briggs; 1 CONC Briggs, Melvin; and Miller, William G. The Briggs Family, 1774 - 1954 1 CONC (1954)). mentioning a Benjamin and Sarah Briggs marriage records in 1 CONC Pennsylvania counties greatly hampers a search of this kind. Even though 1 CONC no connection with the Tell Township, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania 1 CONC Briggs families was found, it would be quite reasonable to assume 1 CONC Benjamin is descended from either Benjamin or Samuel Briggs, early 1 CONC settlers of Huntingdon County. The names Benjamin, Samuel and Jonathan 1 CONC abound in the family according to census, deed, probate, and other 1 CONC records and are difficult to separate and identify. In Huntingdon 1 CONC County, Pennsylvania are land deed records dated 1811, 1812, and 1817 1 CONC concerning an Abel Lincoln of Hingham, Massachusetts who married Elenor 1 CONC Matilda Blodget, daugther of Samuel and Rebecca (nee Smith) Blodget. It 1 CONC seems that this Abel Lincoln - from the same town in Massachusetts 1 CONC where President Abraham Lincoln's ancestors once lived - moved to 1 CONC Huntingdon County but lived several miles from the Briggs families. 1 CONC These are probably not the Lincolns to which Mrs. Sarah Briggs was 1 CONC traditionally related since Sarah was born in 1795 in Pennsylvania, not 1 CONC Massachusetts. 1 CONT 1 CONT Catharine (nee Briggs) Bruner's father, Benjamin Briggs, was residing in 1 CONC Miami County, Ohio when he and a John Moore purchased 136.88 acres 1 CONC (Southwest fractional half of Section 7, Township 25 N, Range 8 E) in 1 CONC Grant County, Indiana on 6 March 1836. Probably Benjamin soon moved to 1 CONC Grant County. On 24 October 1844, he and his wife, Sarah, sold his 1 CONC interest in this land. Apparently they then moved to nearby Wabash 1 CONC County. They were living in Noble Township, Wabash County when the 1850 1 CONC census was taken. On 13 November 1862, Benjamin gave a warranty deed to 1 CONC his son, James T. Briggs, for 80 acres (East one-half of Northeast 1 CONC one-fourth, Section 18, Township 27, Range 7). Sarah had died in 1 CONC September 1862 and Benjamin was to die in 1863. 1 CONT 1 CONT Apparently Benjamin lived his last days with his son, Watson, for the 1 CONC estate records show $50 was paid to Watson for boarding Benjamin. The 1 CONC monument for Benjamin and Sarah in the Matlock Cemetery near Wabash, 1 CONC Indiana is inscribed on the front, "OUR FATHER AND MOTHER;" on the left 1 CONC side, Benjamin Briggs Died Aug. 22, 1863 Aged 79 Ys, 5 Ms, & 11 Ds;" and 1 CONC on the right side, "Sarah wife of Benj. Heinrich Sinn and wife, Elizabeth, 1 CONC arrived 1 CONT in America 19 September 1732. Henry Sinn and his wife had a son, Philip 1 CONC Henry, 1 CONT born 2 August 1736 and baptized 22 August 1736 (sponsors: Philip 1 CONC Rudysill and 1 CONT wife) in the First Reformed Congregation at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. 1 CONT Henry purchased 125 1/4 arces called Loom from Daniel Dulancy on 28 1 CONC July 1 CONT 1746 so we know he was at Monocacy by then. Some records indicate that 1 CONC Henry 1 CONT was twice married, so we do not know which wife would be the ancestor of 1 CONC Samuel 1 CONT Bruner (1808-1886). Henry's will dated in 1740 shows his wife to be 1 CONC Catharine 1 CONT and lists 2 sons and 4 daughters. His sons were Jacob and Philip 1 CONC Henry. 1 CONT Although Jacob and Philip Henry each had a daughter named Catharine 1 CONC born in 1 CONT 1768 and confirmed in the Fredderick Reformed Church in 1786, a study 1 CONC of the 1 CONT wills of a Jacob and a Philip leads one to believe that Philip's 1 CONC daughter was 1 CONT the one who married George Peter Brunner and was the mother of Samuel 1 CONC Bruner. 1 CONT The 1808 Jacob Sinn will names a daughter, Catherine, wife of William 1 CONC Smith "of 1 CONT Woodsberry" (apparently Woodsboro, Maryland) while the 1786 will of 1 CONC Philip Sinn 1 CONT names a Catharine as his eldest daughter but no last name is shown 1 CONC for her. 1 CONT Therefore, we know that this Jacob's daughter, who was Mrs. Catherine 1 CONC Smith in 1 CONT 1808 was not the Catharine who married George Peter Brunner in 1789 1 CONC and lived 1 CONT until 1834. 1 CONT Frederick Reformed Church records show that Philip Sin and Elizab. 1 CONC Zimmerman 1 CONT were married 6 November 1764. John P. Dern of Redwood City, California 1 CONC has made 1 CONT some study of both the Reformed and Lutheran church records of 1 CONC Frederick, 1 CONT Maryland and has found that the Sinn family records were in the Lutheran 1 CONC church 1 CONT from sometime in the 1760's to approximately 1770. According to the 1 CONC Lutheran 1 CONT records, Philip Henry Sinn's daughter, Catharine, shown as Anna 1 CONC Catharina, 1 CONT daughter of Heinrich Sinn and Elisabeth, was born 18 April 1768 and 1 CONC baptized 22 1 CONT May 1768 with sponsors, George Zimmerman and Anna Catharina. The 1 CONC Lutheran 1 CONT records show Jacob Sinn's daughter, Catharine, as Maria Catharina, 1 CONC daughter of 1 CONT Jacob Sinn and Philippine (this does not agree with name of wife, 1 CONC Elizabeth, in 1 CONT the 1808 will of Jacob Sinn so the 1808 will may be for a different 1 CONC Jacob or he 1 CONT may have married again), born 10 March 1768, baptized 22 May 1768. 1 CONC With all 1 CONT this information, we can at least be quite certain that one of the 1 CONC Catharines 1 CONT is the one who married George Peter Brunner in 1789. Samuel Bruner 1 CONC said his 1 CONT mother was born 18 March 1768. This information helps confirm that she 1 CONC was one 1 CONT of the Catharines discussed above, but which one? Was Samuel's 1 CONC information and 1 CONT the church records in disagreement by one month, making his mother the 1 CONC daughter 1 CONT of Philip Henry, or by eight days, making her the daughter of Jacob? 1 CONC Why did 1 CONT both have to have daughters named Catharine in the same year? 1 CONT We have seen that the Brunners - Joseph and his sons except for 1 CONC the 1 CONT youngest, Elias - owned considerable land near Frederick, Maryland and 1 CONC we know 1 CONT that Elias purchased his father's Sheverstadt in 1753. Samuel stated 1 CONC in 1881 1 CONT that Jacob (Joseph's eldest son) had 270 acres which he gave "at his 1 CONC Death" to 1 CONT "my Grand Father Peter Bruner." Deed records in Frederick County, 1 CONC Maryland 1 CONT prove this statement of Samuel's for on 20 March 1755, Jacob Bruner 1 CONC (and wife 1 CONT Barbury) conveyed to "Peter Bruner my truly and well Beloved Son" 200 1 CONC Acres, 1 CONT part of a Tract called Chevy Chase (Liber E, folio 696). The 1 CONC instrument of 1 CONT conveyance was a Deed of Gift! Jacob conveyed 163 acres of Chevy 1 CONC Chase to 1 CONT another son, Michael Bruner, on the same day (Liber E, folio 697). 1 CONC Also, again 1 CONT on the same day, Jacob sold 100 acres (for 25 pounds current money) to 1 CONC Gasper 1 CONT Begabock (Liber E, folio 698). 1 CONT We do not know when Jacob Brunner (born 1703) died, but deed records 1 CONC show 1 CONT that he and wife, Barbara, sold some Chevy Chase land as late as 1 CONC 1761 and a 1 CONT Jacob with wife, Barberry, sold land called Arabia in 1762. Samuel 1 CONC Bruner wrote 1 CONT that Jacob's son, Peter, died in 1821. This agrees with a local 1 CONC history which 1 CONT states that Peter Brumer died 2 October 1821 at age 97, "the oldest 1 CONC inhabitant 1 CONT of the county." If he were 97, he would have been born in 1724 as 1 CONC supposed by 1 CONT Samuel Bruner, but since the Schifferstadt, Germany church records 1 CONC show him 1 CONT born in 1726, we must assume that family records were two years off. 1 CONT The will records of Frederick County indicate, from the will and 1 CONC probate 1 CONT dates, that the three sons (other than Jacob) of Joseph died as 1 CONC follows: John, 1 CONT between 15 and 24 February 1776; Henry, Between 4 December 1775 and 12 1 CONC January 1 CONT 1776; and Elias, between 4 Augest and 14 October 1783. John's will 1 CONC mentions his 1 CONT land called What You Will and Sweeds Folly and lists his children as 1 CONC Catherine 1 CONT Thomas, Anna Narbara Easter, Elizabeth Ramsberger, John, Jacob, 1 CONC Stephen, and 1 CONT Anna Maria Ramsberger. Henry's will mentions his land called Carrol 1 CONC Creek and 1 CONT lists his wife, Magdalena, and children, Henry, Valentine, 1 CONC Barbara (Mrs. 1 CONT Bernhard Linganfelder), Mary, Susannah (Mrs. Jacob Thomas), John, 1 CONC Margaretha, 1 CONT and Jacob. Elias' will lists his wife, Alberdina, and children, 1 CONC Stephen and 1 CONT Peter. 1 CONT Samuel Bruner wrote that his father, George Peter Bruner, son of Peter 1 CONC and 1 CONT Catherine (Sinn) Bruner, was born 5 June 1766. The Frederick Reformed 1 CONC Church 1 CONT records show a child of Peter Brunner and wife was born 5 June 1766, 1 CONC but the 1 CONT name of the child and the baptism date are not shown. Without Samuel's 1 CONC writing, 1 CONT we would not have known that this is birth record of his father. 0 @I0273@ INDI 1 NAME Elizabeth // 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 PLAC Schifferstadt, Germany 1 FAMS @F0424@ 0 @I0274@ INDI 1 NAME Philip Henry /Sinn/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 2 Aug 1736 2 PLAC Lancaster, Lancaster, Pennsylvania 1 FAMC @F0424@ 0 @I0275@ INDI 1 NAME Jacob /Sinn/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F0424@ 0 @I0276@ INDI 1 NAME Britteny Lea /Hugli/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 17 Aug 1990 2 PLAC Layton, Davis, Utah 1 2 PLAC Layton, Davis, Utah 647-01-7235 1 FAMC @F0085@ 0 @I0277@ INDI 1 NAME Brent Thompson /Windley/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 30 Jan 1944 2 PLAC Montpelier, Idaho 1 FAMS @F0425@ 0 @I0278@ INDI 1 NAME Janet Lynn /Comish/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 18 Oct 1946 2 PLAC Soda Springs, Caribou, Idaho 1 FAMS @F0425@ 1 FAMC @F0426@ 0 @I0279@ INDI 1 NAME Deborah Lynn /Windley/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 21 May 1969 2 PLAC Soda Springs, Caribou, Idaho 1 FAMC @F0425@ 0 @I0280@ INDI 1 NAME Mary Jane /Bruner/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 17 Sep 1833 1 DEAT 2 DATE 15 Jul 1862 2 PLAC Venice, Ohio 1 FAMS @F0374@ 1 FAMC @F0329@ 0 @I0281@ INDI 1 NAME Lance /Windley/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 23 Mar 1973 2 PLAC Montpelier, Idaho 1 FAMC @F0425@ 0 @I0282@ INDI 1 NAME Lori Ann /Windley/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 3 Apr 1975 2 PLAC Kemmerer, Wyoming 1 FAMC @F0425@ 0 @I0283@ INDI 1 NAME Robert Lester /Comish/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 20 Oct 1907 2 PLAC Franklin, Franklin, Idaho 1 DEAT 2 DATE 24 Jan 1978 2 PLAC Soda Springs, Caribou, Idaho 1 FAMS @F0426@ 1 FAMC @F0427@ 0 @I0284@ INDI 1 NAME Orpha May /Norstrom/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 13 May 1916 2 PLAC Soda Springs, Caribou, Idaho 1 FAMS @F0426@ 1 FAMC @F0428@ 0 @I0285@ INDI 1 NAME Robert Carlos /Comish/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 5 Jan 1880 2 PLAC Covevill 1 DEAT 2 DATE 2 May 1932 2 PLAC Soda Springs, Caribou, Idaho 1 FAMS @F0427@ 1 FAMC @F0429@ 0 @I0286@ INDI 1 NAME Violet May /Chatterton/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 7 May 1885 2 PLAC Franklin, Franklin, Idaho 1 DEAT 2 DATE 30 May 1948 2 PLAC Soda Springs, Caribou, Idaho 1 FAMS @F0427@ 1 FAMC @F0430@ 1 NOTE @NI0286@ 0 @NI0286@ NOTE 1 CONC THE STORY OF MY LIFE 1 CONT By Violet May Chatterton Comish Cristensen 1 CONT 9 September 1940 1 CONT I was born at Franklin, Idaho, 7 May 1885, a daughter of Joseph and 1 CONC Elizabeth 1 CONT Miria Stones Chatterton. My parents had twelve children, eight boys 1 CONC and four 1 CONT girls. At the present time I have 4 brothers and 3 sisters living. I 1 CONC lived in 1 CONT Franklin until I was eight years old. Wash was my next and 1 CONC Mrs. May 1 CONT Wise was my last. I Graduated, at the age of 16 years, while she 1 CONC taught. 1 CONT Cherryville was a branch of the Franklin Ward. We held Sunday 1 CONC Schools, 1 CONT Sacrament Meetings, Primary, Young Ladies, and Young Men's Meetings. I 1 CONC was the 1 CONT organist for them all. I taught the Primary class in Sunday School for 1 CONC several 1 CONT years in Cherryville Sunday School. Father bought our home from 1 CONC Mr. Jack 1 CONT Kingsford, and I will never forget our first meal there. We kids found 1 CONC a hen's 1 CONT nest and we gave the hen the name of Mrs. Monson. Well, we took the 1 CONC eggs and 1 CONT cooked them for dinner and we ate on dad's old tool box. We kids 1 CONC thought it 1 CONT was a treat. 1 CONT When I was 11 years old Mother had a baby boy, Reuben. He was a 1 CONC very Sweet 1 CONT child. He was drowned when he was 14 months old which made our home very 1 CONC sad. 1 CONT I grew into young womanhood, had some sweethearts, and had some very 1 CONC happy 1 CONT times. I met Robert Carlos Comish, fell in love and after a long 1 CONC courtship we 1 CONT were married in the Logan Temple, 9 December 1903. We gave a wedding 1 CONC dance in 1 CONT the old school house. The first year and a half we lived in two rooms 1 CONC of my 1 CONT old home. Here my first baby was born, 28 January 1905. He was born 1 CONC dead and 1 CONT is buried on the farm. Robert and I moved to Coalville, Utah and lived 1 CONC in one 1 CONT room at Mrs. Comish's. We lived there for a year, then move to 1 CONC Martin 1 CONT Anderson's farm. Here we worked hard and got a little start. Here my 1 CONC second 1 CONT baby was born, Robert Lester. He was born in Cherryville, 29 1 CONC October 1907. 1 CONT Two years lated Robert, I and the children went up to Grace, Idaho to 1 CONC visit my 1 CONT sister, Grace Gibson. While there Robert saw a farm that was 'for 1 CONC sale.' We 1 CONT decided to buy it and on the first day of May 1910 we moved to Grace 1 CONC to live. 1 CONT I did feel sorry to leave my dear parents for it seemed such a long 1 CONC ways away 1 CONT and mother felt so bad. That made it all the harder. I cried when I 1 CONC saw the 1 CONT house I had to live in. It was in such a dirty mess. On 30 March 1932; 1 CONC Robert 1 CONT went out to start our gasoline engine to get some water to use in the 1 CONC house. 1 CONT Somehow he got caught in the engine and broke his arm. On 30 April 1 CONC 1932 he 1 CONT took pain in his stomache. We called Dr. Zarring. He said it 1 CONC would be 1 CONT necessary to take him to the hospital. We did and on the same day 1 CONC about 11:00 1 CONT he was operated on for rupturd ulcer of the stomache. I thought he was 1 CONC getting 1 CONT along fine but the doctor knew different and did not tell me. On 2 1 CONC May. my 1 CONT brother Cleve came and told me I was wanted at the hospital and then he 1 CONC let me 1 CONT know that there was no hopes for my darling getting better. I hurried 1 CONC to his 1 CONT bedside where I stayed until he died at 4:00 May 2nd 1932. It seemed 1 CONC at that 1 CONT time that everything had been taken out of my life and I was 1 CONC left a 1 CONT broken-hearted woman with four children to care for and they in turn 1 CONC cared for 1 CONT me. Well, I paid the mortgage on the farm and in a year or two I had 1 CONC all the 1 CONT debts paid and our home and all we had free from debt. Just how 1 CONC lonesome the 1 CONT next few years were no ones knows I always tried to put my best side 1 CONC out. 18 1 CONT July 1933 Nola married to Otto Christensen. 2 August 1933 Libbie was 1 CONC married 1 CONT to Herman Maughan. Then I was lonesome with both the girls gone for they 1 CONC surely 1 CONT had been thoughtful and kind to me. 1 CONT In May 1934 I moved to Grace and lived there that summer. Otto ran the 1 CONC farm. 1 CONT My first 2 grand children were born at my place in town. Robert 1 CONC (Bobby), was 1 CONT born 3 August 1934 and Roberta, 29 August 1934. In July 1934 my 1 CONC brother Aaron 1 CONT died. That same fall I moved back to the farm and Lester ran it for 1 CONC me on 1 CONT shares. I stay on the farm and cooked for him. 1 CONT 20 March 1936 Gary was born and on 25 May Keith was born. Both girls 1 CONC stayed 1 CONT with me and took care of them. 1 CONT 20 August 1936 Lester and Orpha were married in the Salt Lake Temple. I 1 CONC went to 1 CONT Salt Lake with them. They left their marriage licence in our car at 1 CONC Ruby's 1 CONT place where we left it amd from their we went on the bus. It was 1 CONC surely funny 1 CONT when they found they had left it. Lester ran back to Ruby's for it. 1 CONC The bus 1 CONT driver sure did laugh. 1 CONT Lester and Orpha lived in one part of the house. Ben and I lived in 1 CONC the other 1 CONT part. 20 February 1938 their first baby, Dennis, was born. 1 CONT In September 1936 Ben was operated on for appendicitis at the Cooley 1 CONC Hospital 1 CONT in Brigham City. The next spring he had his tonsils out at Brigham by 1 CONC Dr. 1 CONT Cooley. We stayed with Ruby. 1 CONT 6 June 1935 dear old dad passed away. If he had lived until August 28, he 1 CONT would have been 85 years old. Mother, when she died, was 73. Brother 1 CONC Aaron 1 CONT was 57 ehen he died. 1 CONT From November 1929 until 6 June 1935 father lived with sister Nin. She 1 CONC had 1 CONT bought father''s home in Franklin. Dear old dad was not very happy at 1 CONC Nin's. 1 CONT He wanted to live with me but he thought it was too cold in Grace for 1 CONC him. He 1 CONT stayed with me when he could and we all enjoyed his stay very much. 1 CONT While Lester was on his Mission I worked in the Mutual. Was second 1 CONC counselor 1 CONT and later first counselor to Mildred Burton and I also was first 1 CONC counselor to 1 CONT sister Ruth Smart in the Relief Society. I was released in the fall of 1 CONC 1936 1 CONT when Sister Smart resigned on account of her health. 1 CONT After Robert died I did not think I could ever think enough of another 1 CONC man to 1 CONT get married again but after living alone for 6 years I changed my mind in 1 CONC the 1 CONT summer of 1937. I met Mr. C.W. Christensen. Some time later he took me 1 CONC to a 1 CONT picture show at Grace and did I feel silly. I thought everybody was 1 CONC looking at 1 CONT me. Then in 1938 he began to come to see me. We spent some wonderful 1 CONC evenings 1 CONT together. On 30 August 1938 we were married in the Salt Lake Temple. He 1 CONT brought his children, Verl, Leora, and Collean to Grace where they went 1 CONC to 1 CONT school. That winter C.W. worked for Morgan's two weeks after we were 1 CONC married. 1 CONT Then he came and ran the farm. 1 CONT Lester then moved to town the first part of April. C.W. started to work 1 CONC for 1 CONT Call's as a salesman. 1 CONT Herman and Libbie rented the farm so we moved to Bancroft to live. We 1 CONC first 1 CONT lived in the upstairs of Ira Calls house. Lived there for a few months 1 CONC then we 1 CONT moved to MR. Montague's house where we lived until 1 December, then we 1 CONC moved 1 CONT back to Grace for C.W. had gone in partners with Crover Chatterton and 1 CONC put in a 1 CONT cold storage there. We lived up over the Cache Grocery that winter. 1 CONC When C.W. 1 CONT sold his share of the plant to Grover and he went back to work for 1 CONC Call's, so 1 CONT we moved back up in Call's Hotel. We had a nice apartment. Little Max 1 CONC was 1 CONT born 7 April 1940, in the Soda Springs Hospital. 1 CONT When I married Chris I thought I was the happiest woman in the world, he 1 CONC seemed 1 CONT so wonderful. But my happiness was short lived because the girls and I 1 CONC could 1 CONT not get along as we should and I realize now that I should not at my age 1 CONT married a man with children because it seems the children were always 1 CONC right and 1 CONT I was always wrong. Instead of them being made to do my way I was 1 CONC expected to 1 CONT do theirs. That was hard to do, so he sent them to live with their 1 CONC sister 1 CONT Arneta for awhile, then we went and brought them back. I thought 1 CONC everything 1 CONT was O.K. Then one day when we came home there was a note signed by Leora 1 CONT saying they had ran away. We went to Arneta's and found them. Well, the 1 CONC blame 1 CONT was all mine, as usual. Well, the way C.W. treated me that day changed 1 CONC my 1 CONT appearance of him and I have not been as happy with him since. On 14 1 CONC August 1 CONT 1940 we took a trip to Canada. Was gone two weeks. We had a wonderful 1 CONC time 1 CONT and I do believe we were as happy as anyone could be while we were on our 1 CONC trip. 1 CONT On 13 January 1941, little Joyce was born. I stayed with Libbie from the 1 CONC 15th 1 CONT of December until the 6th of February. In July of the same year, Herman, 1 CONT Libbie and the children moved to Paso Robles, California, and 2 October, 1 CONC Ben 1 CONT and I drove Ben's new car. I had a lovely trip, stayed until 17 December 1 CONC 1941. 0 @I0287@ INDI 1 NAME Peter Laran /Norstrom/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 17 Oct 1873 2 PLAC Fairview, Snpt, Utah 1 DEAT 2 DATE 26 Dec 1930 2 PLAC
