He 1 CONT was born during the Revolutionary war, and his natural mother 1 CONT died when he was still an infant (about 2 or three years old). 1 CONT 1 CONT "Weller History ..." quotes a letter from a John I. Weller 1 CONT written to Mrs. Lizzie Weller Cummins in 1914 as follows: "One 1 CONT of the sons of Jacob and Christina Weller, though only a small 1 CONT boy, left home going to New York. He was bound out to some 1 CONT family in Massachusetts. When he grew to manhood he returned to 1 CONT New York and from there to Trenton, Mercer Co., New Jersey where 1 CONT his grandsons now live" (1914). John I. Weller supposedly 1 CONT received this story directly from one of the grandsons, known 1 CONT collectively as Hiram Weller's Sons Company. It was speculated 1 CONT that this bound out son of Jacob Weller was our William Weller. 1 CONT 1 CONT Our own research shows that it was indeed the sons of Hirem 1 CONT Weller who were in business in Trenton in 1914 (see following 1 CONT page). Since William Weller had no son named Hirem, they cannot 1 CONT be the grandsons of William Weller, though they may be great 1 CONT grandsons. Our research, however, shows that William Weller lived 1 CONT his adult life in Knowlton township, Warren County on land 1 CONT inherited from his father (130 acres in three widely spread 1 CONT parcels). We do not believe that William Weller was this "bound 1 CONT out" son -- though only further research will tell for sure. 1 CONT 1 CONT William Weller married Margaret Baylor, daughter of Michael 1 CONT and Mary Kase Baylor. Michael Baylor was a soldier in the 1 CONT Revolutionary War; he lived with William and Margaret Weller near 1 CONT the end of his life after suffering from a "paralytic stroke". A 1 CONT Revolutionary War Pension Application filed on behalf of Michael 1 CONT Baylor tells much about his war experiences and the nature of the 1 CONT US Government bureaucracy at that time (see Baylor section). 1 CONT 1 CONT William Weller died in 1839. He left no will and the courts 1 CONT could not agree upon a distribution, thus the property was sold 1 CONT (to sons Michael and William) and the proceeds were divided. An 1 CONT inventory made at the time of his death lists a total valuation 1 CONT (excluding real estate) of $3,225. His wife, Margaret, was 1 CONT living with son John Weller in Knowlton township in 1850 (per 1 CONT census); she died in 1854. He was born in Warren County New Jersey, moved to 1 CONT the Scranton area with his family as a small child, and was not 1 CONT quite eleven years old when his mother died. He probably moved 1 CONT to Maryland with his family because in the 1880 census 1 CONT (Covington, Kenton County, Kentucky) he incorrectly listed his 1 CONT birthplace and that of his parents as "Maryland". In the 1910 1 CONT census his son Worth (then living in Oakley Village, Hamilton 1 CONT County, Ohio) also listed Jacob's birthplace incorrectly as 1 CONT "Maryland". In that same year (1910), though, Jacob himself 1 CONT listed his birthplace correctly as New Jersey. 1 CONT 1 CONT We know very little about Jacob Weller's young adult years. 1 CONT "Weller History" claims that he fought for the Confederacy in the 1 CONT Civil War (he would have been a teenager), but the 1910 census 1 CONT does not list him as a Civil War veteran. In 1876 Jacob Weller married 1 CONT Eunice Worth, daughter of North Carolina governor (1865 - 1868) 1 CONT Jonathon Worth (see following biographies -- much has been 1 CONT printed about Governor Worth).
