John was a recent widower with an 8 month old 2 CONT baby girl named Jessica, at the time. After several months of 2 CONT corresponding via computer and a number of phone calls, Dina flew to 2 CONT Raleigh, NC - where under the supervision of cousin Bobby Pitts, John and 2 CONT Dina met face to face for the first time. 2 CONT After nearly two weeks of getting acquainted, on August 6, 1993, John 2 CONT asked Dina to marry him. She said yes. They initially planned to marry 2 CONT April 1994, however, Dina's father was terminally ill and all parties 2 CONT wished him present for the nuptuals. So, John and Dina married on 2 CONT November 20, 1993. They honeymooned in the Pacific NW, and then rented a 2 CONT Ryder moving van, put Dina's belongings in it, and John, Dina & Jessica 2 CONT in the cab and moved to SE Kentucky (Fogertown - 20 miles west of 2 CONT Manchester), where John was pastoring a small, rural, Christian & 2 CONT Missionary Alliance Church. They arrived at Fogertown December 8, 1993. 2 CONT Nearly a year to the date - December 2, 1994 - they rented another 2 CONT Ryder moving van and headed West this time. We were traveling to the installation of a 2 CONT new lay pastor in one of the churches in our Zone - over in Dreyfin - a 2 CONT community of about 100 people, when I mentioned to John that I was just 2 CONT so tired all of the time of late. We attributed it to the garden and 2 CONT were glad that from the installation we would be taking Jessica to her 2 CONT grandparents house in West Virginia for a week, while we went on to 2 CONT Columbus, OH for the week of our denominations General Council. We would 2 CONT be staying with friends and were really ready for the break. While we 2 CONT were at Council my ankles ballooned up - I'd never seen anything like 2 CONT it. And I was ravenously hungry all of the time, and so tired, and my 2 CONT lower back hurt, and..... Our friend Debby, who is a pediatrician, was 2 CONT kind of looking me over because she was concerned that I was feeling so 2 CONT poorly when she looked at me and asked, "Dina, are you late? Your 2 CONT period, I mean?" And then it occurred to me that I was. "Yes, but only 2 CONT by about three days." She got a twinkle in her eye and said, "Girl, I 2 CONT have a strong suspicion that you are pregnant." I was so surprised. We 2 CONT really wanted to have a baby. We had made a rather radical decision 2 CONT before we got married regarding what method of birth control we would 2 CONT use. We chose to allow God to be in control of it. We had both been 2 CONT really feeling the Lord nudging us toward more radical devotion to God in 2 CONT the months leading up to our engagement, and although it was a scarry 2 CONT thing, we decided that we would give it to God. I'd read a book by Doris 2 CONT Coffin Aldrich (first wife of Willard Aldrich and Joe Aldrich's mother) 2 CONT and she and her husband had taken that approach as well - with somewhat 2 CONT frightening results - they had 9 children! But, John and I dedicated 2 CONT ourselves to believing that God is the author and creator of life, and 2 CONT His timing is perfect. So, I shouldn't have been surprised, I suppose. 2 CONT But I was, and of course, very happy. John was very happy as well, and 2 CONT our friends that we were staying with were thrilled. We decided to just 2 CONT tell the immediate family and closest friends to start out with, because 2 CONT of my mother's history of miscarriage, we knew that there was a 2 CONT possiblity that I may suffer one as well. 1 NOTE June and July were marked my mind as the months of morning sickness. 2 CONT Actually, morning sickness is a misnomer. It should be more like every 2 CONT waking hour and then some sickness. I was nautious when I got up, I 2 CONT didn't want to eat, but forced myself to eat a little, I was nautious all 2 CONT morning long, all noon, all afternoon, all evening, all night. I 2 CONT couldn't stand the smell, sight, or taste of meat. Chicken was 2 CONT especially repulsive. All I wanted was bagels with a little bit of cream 2 CONT cheese and diet 7up. I lost 12 pounds the first trimester. My midwife 2 CONT was a gem - Marilyn. It was a long painful process that we went through 2 CONT finally settling on going to the midwife in Manchester, rather than 2 CONT driving the 110 miles to an OB/GYN in Lexington. However, after having 2 CONT had introductory meetings with about 10 OB/GYN's I was convinced that the 2 CONT Midwives were much more current on the medical end of things - and the 2 CONT doctor that worked in their group was very up to date on procedures as 2 CONT well. John and I read EVERYTHING we could find on pregnancy, labor and 2 CONT delivery and recovery. I knew I didn't want an IV, didn't want meds 2 CONT during my delivery, knew I didn't want an epidural, didn't want to be 2 CONT laying on my back with a monitor - I wanted to be able to walk around if 2 CONT I could, would really have preferred a waterbirth if it were available 2 CONT (which it wasn't), knew I'd prefer not to have an epesiotomy if at all 2 CONT possible (midwives are renound for their ability to avoid them and 2 CONT horrible tearing), and knew I wanted to breastfeed. The average woman in 2 CONT Clay Co. was probably just figuring out what got her pregnant in the 2 CONT first place, and then trying to convince her doctor that her chainsmoking 2 CONT wouldn't harm the baby, and she wanted to be as drugged as possible 2 CONT during labor and delivery. It sounds exaggerated, but is true, I swear 2 CONT it! We'd walk into the health department and see 13, 14, 15 and 16 year 2 CONT old girls standing outside the doors in their bare feet - looking as if 2 CONT they hadn't bathed in weeks, and chainsmoking. It was equally rare that 2 CONT they would seek prenatal care before the 6th or 7th month, if at all. 2 CONT The rate of miscarriage and premature labor in Appalachia is 40-50% 2 CONT higher than anywhere else in the United States. The groundwater 2 CONT contamination, the stream water contamination, and poor health 2 CONT conditions, poverty, and malnutrition are all contributing factors. But 2 CONT I think the resistence to education is also a really major thing. My 2 CONT midwives were so amazed at John and I - they just loved us. We were 2 CONT actually as up on things as they were. Most of their practice was spent 2 CONT trying to get people to do the most basic of things to help protect their 2 CONT baby. 1 NOTE In July when I went for my 11th week checkup at the midwife, Marilyn 2 CONT couldn't find the baby's heartbeat, but my uterus is retroverted (tipped 2 CONT toward the back), and so she arranged for me to have an ultrasound. She 2 CONT took me over to Dr. Azizapour, who dropped everything and happily did the 2 CONT ultrasound. We found a very active baby, bouncing around like crazy - 2 CONT confirmed the gestation, and was told that everything was just fine. 1 NOTE At the end of July we also announced to the congregation (who in turn 2 CONT told the rest of the world) that we were expecting. The response was 2 CONT positive, and people were very happy for us. 1 NOTE The first weekend of August John, Jessica and I went to candidate at a 2 CONT church in Richmond, Indiana. John had had his resume out nationwide for 2 CONT over a year by then, and this was the first candidating experience that 2 CONT had arisen out of that. We had a wonderful time. It was a great church, 2 CONT with a clear vision for what they wanted, although somewhat in decline, 2 CONT they were looking for a pastor who was willing to lead them toward growth 2 CONT spiritually and numerically. John preached and they responded - 6 people 2 CONT came to the alter, and their offering was $800 more than they'd ever had 2 CONT in the past. But they were looking for someone with a very outgoing, 2 CONT vivacious personality first, and John just isn't that. He's quiet, 2 CONT genuine, and loves the body, and his heart's first desire is to preach 2 CONT Jesus Christ and God's Word. So they didn't call us. While we were 2 CONT disappointed, there was a great peace in that decision for us. We'd had 2 CONT a wonderful time worshipping with the body there, and come away 2 CONT refreshed. While we were there I felt the baby move for the first time - 2 CONT during prayer meeting, actually. It was amazing. And while I'd been 2 CONT aware of the baby, certainly (it wasn't hard to forget considering my 2 CONT continual nausea!), it was at that moment that the baby became much more 2 CONT real to me. 1 NOTE The next week we got home and I had an appointment with the Midwife. My 2 CONT "usual" midwife was Marilyn, but this time I got "Vicki" whom after our 2 CONT first encounter with her, John and I dubbed as "Vicki, the stress cadet 2 CONT midwife." She was not the laid back personality that Marilyn was, and 2 CONT just flipped out over the fact that I'd lost weight rather than gained it 2 CONT during my pregnancy, was upset about my general weight, and was very 2 CONT concerned about my continued nausea past the first trimester. She 2 CONT referred me to Dr. Azizapour (their doctor in the practice) just to make 2 CONT sure everything was okay. The other thing she did, was tell me to start 2 CONT taking Barley Green and Brewer's Yeast (tablet form) in hopes that it 2 CONT would reduce my nausea. I did mention to her my numerious allergies to 2 CONT things and the fact that I was allergic to grass, etc., but she didn't 2 CONT seem to think there would be any problem with any of it. Well, that was 2 CONT a Thursday, I went to the health food store (yes there was one in 2 CONT London!) and bought the Barley Green and Brewer's Yeast and began taking 2 CONT them that very afternoon. By Thursday evening I had the migrane to beat 2 CONT all. All day Friday I was dizzy and had a migrane and a little more 2 CONT nautious than normal, and by Saturday morning I was vomiting so violently 2 CONT that I burst blood vessels under my eyes, in my eyes, and could hardly 2 CONT stand. I also started spotting - just little pinpricks of blood, but 2 CONT enough to concern me so I called Vicki back. She flipped of course, and 2 CONT had me come in right away for another ultrasound (I was at 16 weeks by 2 CONT this point in time). The ultrasound confirmed that I'd just burst blood 2 CONT vessels vaginally when I'd been vomiting as well, and everything was just 2 CONT find. By the time I got to Dr. Azizapour he was a little ticked because 2 CONT Vicki was such a stress cadet and I was obviously fine, despite my 2 CONT experience with the Barley Green allergic reaction, and assured me I just 2 CONT had a little more morning sickness than the average person, although not 2 CONT an unheard of amount, and no matter what my weight was before during or 2 CONT after my pregnancy, there was a baby that had to come out of there and 2 CONT out it would come! He was very reassuring. And told me not to take any 2 CONT more Barley Green or Brewer's Yeast for heaven's sake! 1 NOTE September was a really wonderful month - the weather was so much nicer - 2 CONT not so much humidity with the unbearable hot, and the leaves began to 2 CONT turn, and I began to feel better at about 18 - 19 weeks. The baby was so 2 CONT active - we were sure it was a boy because the child would keep me up 2 CONT until about 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning with somersaults, kicks, and 2 CONT hiccups. It felt like the baby was hanging onto my ribs and swinging and 2 CONT kicking me in the bladder or lower back half the time. John insisted on 2 CONT calling the baby "Lycurgus Cincinnatus" after my great-great 2 CONT grandfather. We went through the whole name thing on a regular basis. 2 CONT We had quite a variety of names available but couldn't decide on a single 2 CONT one. So we decided to put the decision off for later because there would 2 CONT obviously be time. 1 NOTE At about 20 weeks my appetite returned. All of a sudden fruit was the 2 CONT thing I couldn't live without. I had to have apples, pears, peaches, 2 CONT oranges, kiwi, grapes.... This in the place where apples go for $1.30 a 2 CONT pound, and oranges $1.50 a pound. I would eat four oranges a day! And 2 CONT rice! I became obsessed with rice! I couldn't get enough of it. I 2 CONT still didn't want meat, but forced myself to get enough protein. My 2 CONT weight had returned to my pre-pregnancy weight, and I even gained 2 2 CONT pounds over that! My midwife was so happy. 1 NOTE On Wednesday, September 28th I woke up and went to the bathroom and found 2 CONT that I'd begun to have a clear, mucousy discharge. I'd never had a yeast 2 CONT infection before, so I wondered if perhaps that was what it was. I 2 CONT immediately went and called the midwife, who said it was normal to have 2 CONT discharges, but to let her know if it should change in color or odor at 2 CONT all. About two hours later it did turn yellowish, and so I phoned back. 2 CONT Again, she said since it seemed for the most part to be without odor, 2 CONT etc, that it was probably just a normal discharge, but to keep her 2 CONT updated. She also said I should get additional fluids, so I started 2 CONT drinking cranraspberry and lots of water. The discharge continued 2 CONT through Thursday, Friday and Saturday. And I continued to call each day 2 CONT and report what was going on. 1 NOTE On Saturday evening I began having a nagging discomfort in the lower 2 CONT right quadrant of my abdomen, so I called the midwife again. It was 2 CONT about 8:00 in the evening, so I really felt kind of stupid for bothering 2 CONT her, but she assured me that it was probably a pulled muscle in the hip 2 CONT area - classic to the 22 and 23rd weeks of gestation - and that I should 2 CONT take a warm bath, drink some sleepytime tea and take one Tylenol. If 2 CONT that didn't help I was to call back. It seemed to be okay after all of 2 CONT that, so I just went to bed and to sleep. 1 NOTE Sunday morning, the 2nd of October, I was awakened at 6:30 am by the 2 CONT worst leg cramp I'd ever had. I woke up screaming. Poor John nearly had 2 CONT a heart attack and quickly massaged my leg. Other than that the morning 2 CONT went very smoothly. I was still having the discharge, and it concerned 2 CONT me, but I didn't know if I should be concerned about it or not. Once I 2 CONT got to church and settled into the pew, however, after about fifteen 2 CONT minutes I had an absolutely incredible contraction - about three minutes 2 CONT in length and very, very intense. It almost knocked the breath out of 2 CONT me. About ten minutes later there was another, just like the first, and 2 CONT another ten minutes down the line, another just like the first two. 2 CONT Julia (our housekeeper) and seen my face when the first one hit, and knew 2 CONT something was amiss. She came quietly over and sat next to me to take 2 CONT care of Jessica. After Sunday School I told John what was going on and 2 CONT we both wondered if it was Braxton-HIcks, or what. During the break 2 CONT between Sunday School and church I went over to the house and pulled out 2 CONT my plethera of pregnancy-related books and quickly scanned for anything 2 CONT that would pertain to contractions at 23 weeks gestation. Everything 2 CONT seemed to point to Braxton-Hicks, and they said they could be very 2 CONT intense and one shouldn't get overly concerned, just rest and then resume 2 CONT normal activity. Once I was up walking around they seemed to subside, as 2 CONT well, so we seemed convinced they were Braxton-Hicks. 1 NOTE During church, however, they came back. This time, about every fifteen 2 CONT or twenty minutes apart, and only about a minute in duration. It seemed 2 CONT as if they were indeed going away like the books said Braxton-HIcks 2 CONT would. After church we went home, made dinner, although I had no 2 CONT appetite, and just picked at the meal. The contractions continued, so I 2 CONT went to lay down. I couldn't sleep, however, because of the 2 CONT contractions. They were like muscle cramps that started at the top of my 2 CONT belly and waved down - and while they were somewhat painful, they were 2 CONT nothing compared to the menstrual cramps I used to have each month. At 2 CONT 4:00 John had to leave - he was scheduled to be picked up by Pastor Frank 2 CONT Smith, Sr. and his wife Faith to go to our District's yearly prayer 2 CONT conference in Columbus, OH. They would be driving as far as Lexington 2 CONT that night and staying with Pastor Frank Smith, Jr. and his wife 2 CONT Cherylbeth in their home. I cried as John got in the car and drove 2 CONT away. I didn't know why, but I had an underlying fear that I couldn't 2 CONT put my finger on. I was convinced that the contractions would go away 2 CONT and I would be fine, but still, there was something nagging me saying 2 CONT that I should have asked him not to leave. 1 NOTE So, after he left, I got Jessica into the car, and she and I left Hazel 2 CONT at home to fend for herself while I drove into town to pick a few things 2 CONT up at the store, and to treat Jessica to Burger King for dinner. As I 2 CONT was driving toward London the contractions became stronger, but still 2 CONT only about 5 minutes apart. I got to Wal-Mart and was walking through 2 CONT the store when I had to stop, and lean over the shopping cart because the 2 CONT pain was so intense with the contractions. I got Jessica into Burger 2 CONT King, got her seated in her high chair and eating when the contractions 2 CONT got so painful that I wanted to scream. All of a sudden it occurred to 2 CONT me that these weren't Braxton-Hicks and I needed to get my butt home. 2 CONT Why I didn't just drive to the London Hospital and present there I'll 2 CONT never know - it didn't occur to me. My midwives worked out of the 2 CONT Manchester Hospital (the one John and I not so affectionaly termed the 2 CONT "veterinary hospital" because we wouldn't send a dog we liked there for 2 CONT treatment). But, going to the London Hospital didn't occur to me so I 2 CONT drove home to Fogertown. I went straight to the phone, called my midwife 2 CONT and found she had just left the London Hospital and was out of beeper 2 CONT range for the next 40 minutes. So I waited. By that point in time my 2 CONT contractions were 2 minutes apart and about a minute in duration. I 2 CONT tried laying down with my feet and hips elevated, but it was just as 2 CONT painful as anything else. Finally, it was Vicki the stress cadet midwife 2 CONT who called back. She told me to pack a bag and get to the hospital, and 2 CONT to expect to stay overnight. I then had to call Julia and ask her to get 2 CONT someone to drive her down to the house (she didn't drive) to stay the 2 CONT night with Jessica and Hazel. Then, when Julia got there I started to 2 CONT get in the car to drive myself to the Manchester Hospital. She wouldn't 2 CONT let me because I could only sit upright for about a minute in between 2 CONT contractions. So she called Cookie and Corky McKeehan to drive me to the 2 CONT hospital. They finally got there and drove me to the hospital. I 2 CONT finally got to the observation room on the maternity ward, and the nurse 2 CONT did an overall evaluation. While I was still having contractions, they 2 CONT were low on the monitor's scale (because I was only at 23 weeks gestation 2 CONT - not 40 weeks). She did recognize that I was having discharge and took 2 CONT a sample of it and urine. Everyone kept asking if I'd had any bleeding 2 CONT or spotting - which I hadn't, and I kept saying that I hadn't. Finally, 2 CONT the nurse did a quick pelvic and when she withdrew her hand there was a 2 CONT bloody show. She quickly went and called the midwife and told her to get 2 CONT over quickly. About 20 minutes later Vicki showed up. She got a scope 2 CONT and did a quick visual and found that there was a little bit of bleeding, 2 CONT and then took some samples of a fluid that was now escaping. They 2 CONT brought in the machine to an ultrasound to see if the placenta had 2 CONT detached or something. Finally, when Vicki could not come up with a 2 CONT definitive answer, she called in the doctor on call. As it turned out, 2 CONT the doctor on call was an OB/GYN specialist from Chicago who flew into 2 CONT Appalachia once each quarter to donate a weekend of work on behalf of one 2 CONT of the Appalachian charities. She came in, did one quick exam, looked at 2 CONT the data and said, "Get her feet up." So they elevated my feet about two 2 CONT feet about my head, and then she explained, "Your waters have hourglassed 2 CONT - a little balloon has descended into the birth canal, and it seems that 2 CONT there is a high leak of your amniotic fluid. We are going to transfer 2 CONT you to University Hospital in Lexington. There is little chance that 2 CONT your baby will survive. As a matter of fact, you may even deliver 2 CONT enroute to Lexington." With that she whisked out of the room and quickly 2 CONT phoned University Hospital to let them know that I would be transported 2 CONT by Ambulance. During this whole thing they'd given me two shots of 2 CONT Breathine in order to calm the uterine muscles, the side effect of it was 2 CONT that it made my pulse race to 125. My blood pressure was also a little 2 CONT high - mostly from nerves. So they had to call around and find a nurse 2 CONT that was qualified to accompany me to Lexington in the ambulance. While 2 CONT all of the preparations were going on, Vicki, the stress cadet midwife, 2 CONT cleared everyone out of the room, pulled up a chair, and said, "Let's ask 2 CONT the Father to be here, shall we?" And then she prayed for me the most 2 CONT sincere, loving, and compassionate prayer that anyone has ever prayed for 2 CONT me. Then she cried and held my hand with me, and helped me to call John 2 CONT - who was pretty much unawares in Lexington. Thankfully, John was not 2 CONT far from the hospital and agreed to meet me. It took quite some time for 2 CONT the nurse to get there, for the ambulance to get there, for all of the 2 CONT paperwork and lab work, and ultrasound film to be prepared to accompany 2 CONT me. At 1:00 a.m. I was loaded into the ambulance - on a guerney with my 2 CONT feet still elevated two feet above my head - and driven at break-neck 2 CONT speed over bumpy, windy Appalachian roads the 110 miles to Lexington. I 2 CONT arrived at University Hospital at 2:20 a.m. - where John had been very 2 CONT fretfully waiting for me for the past hour and a half. They quickly got 2 CONT me to the maternity trauma unit and assessed my condition. When I had 2 CONT left Manchester I was dialated to 3 cm. When I arrived at University 2 CONT Hospital in Lexington I was dialated to 7 cm, with waters intact and one 2 CONT of the baby's legs down in the birth canal. They did more tests, did 2 CONT another ultrasound, and concluded that this baby, although healthy, was 2 CONT just too young to live outside of the womb, and my body just wasn't able 2 CONT to hold her any longer. One of the hardest things was seeing the fetal 2 CONT monitor bleep out the heart rate - a very healthy 145 to 150 during the 2 CONT whole thing. So, being that nothing could be done at this point in time 2 CONT to arrest labor and that the baby was basically ready to come, they 2 CONT advised us that our only real choice was to let the baby come and to go 2 CONT ahead and deliver. They broke my waters and then we waited. At about 2 CONT 3:30 a.m. the contractions were back like they had been before I'd even 2 CONT gone to the Manchester Hospital - about a minute apart and about 2 2 CONT minutes in duration. The really tricky thing about this whole delivery 2 CONT was the fact that the baby was breach, and so the doctors tried pushing 2 CONT her one leg back up in and then rotating her - it didn't work - and 2 CONT believe me, was not a comfortable experience. Finally they gave that up 2 CONT and decided to let her be born breach, and then had to get both of her 2 CONT legs into the birth canal next. At 4:22 a.m. Elizabeth was born. She 2 CONT weighted 1 lb 9 oz, and was 12 inches long. She only scored a 1 on the 2 CONT Apgars because the only thing she had going for her was a healthy strong 2 CONT heart. She simply couldn't breathe, and of course, she suffocated to 2 CONT death as we held her. I was so amazed at her tiny perfection - her teeny 2 CONT tiny little hands and feet. Her long fingers. Her beautiful hair and 2 CONT skin. Here was the little one that I'd been absolutely convinced was a 2 CONT boy - a tiny, beautiful little girl! The one that had kept me up late at 2 CONT night with her aerobics, the one who'd kicked me the very first time 2 CONT during a prayer meeting. The one I'd been praying for since the very 2 CONT first moment I'd learned that she'd be coming - praying that she'd grow 2 CONT to be a heart with whole devotion to God, that she'd be a mind who would 2 CONT embrace the beauty of the gospel at an early age, praying that she'd be a 2 CONT life that would show others the way to the Savior. It was so 2 CONT incomprehensible to me that here was MY baby - dead in my arms. There 2 CONT was a hush in the delivery room as the doctors and staff watched while 2 CONT John and I tearfully welcomed and then said goodbye to our baby 2 CONT Elizabeth. It was the longest and the shortest four minutes of my entire 2 CONT life. It was then that the doctor realized that I was bleeding - a lot. 2 CONT They'd had to really pull to get the placenta to detach from the uterine 2 CONT wall, and so I began to hemmorhage. They gave me a medication to help 2 CONT the uterus to "clamp down" to help stop the bleeding, and then gave me 2 CONT some time to rest. I dozed off and when I awakened I was so amazed to 2 CONT find that it was only 4:40 a.m. - only an hour before I'd been pregnant, 2 CONT 18 minutes before I'd given birth, and 14 minutes before my baby had died 2 CONT - how could so little time have passed with such far reaching 2 CONT implications? 0 @I07723@ INDI 1 NAME Emily Anne /SHARP/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 10 Nov 1994 2 PLAC Burbank, Los Angeles Co., CA 1 FAMC @F13@ 0 @I10729@ INDI 1 NAME John Henry /DELLER/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 6 Oct 1881 1 DEAT 2 DATE 14 Dec 1956 2 PLAC McAlester, OK 1 FAMS @F22@ 0 @I10833@ INDI 1 NAME John Windfield /DELLAR/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 9 Oct 1919 1 DEAT 2 DATE 15 Oct 1919 1 FAMC @F22@ 0 @I10834@ INDI 1 NAME Florence Agnes /DELLAR/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 4 Feb 1921 2 PLAC Cambria, OK 1 FAMC @F22@ 0 @I10835@ INDI 1 NAME Franklin Henry /DELLAR/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 19 May 1923 2 PLAC Cambria, OK 1 FAMC @F22@ 0 @I10836@ INDI 1 NAME John Richard /DELLAR/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 28 Feb 1930 2 PLAC Hartshorne, OK 1 FAMC @F22@ 0 @I10987@ INDI 1 NAME Steve /WOODRUFF/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F23@ 0 @I11017@ INDI 1 NAME John /RIDDLE/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1837 2 PLAC MS 1 FAMC @F18@ 0 @I11104@ INDI 1 NAME Sarah /RIDDLE/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1839 2 PLAC MS 1 FAMC @F18@ 0 @I11105@ INDI 1 NAME Daniel /RIDDLE/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1841 2 PLAC MS 1 FAMC @F18@ 0 @I11106@ INDI 1 NAME William /RIDDLE/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1843 2 PLAC MS 1 FAMC @F18@ 0 @I11107@ INDI 1 NAME John /RIDDLE/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1844 2 PLAC MS 1 FAMC @F18@ 0 @I11108@ INDI 1 NAME James /RIDDLE/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1846 2 PLAC MS 1 FAMC @F18@ 0 @I11109@ INDI 1 NAME Winfield /RIDDLE/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1847 2 PLAC MS 1 DEAT 2 DATE BEF 1860 1 FAMC @F18@ 0 @I11110@ INDI 1 NAME Thomas /RIDDLE/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1853 2 PLAC MS 1 FAMC @F18@ 0 @I11111@ INDI 1 NAME Jim /CROW/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F24@ 0 @I11258@ INDI 1 NAME John /PLAXCO/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F15@ 0 @I11259@ INDI 1 NAME James /PLAXCO/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F15@ 0 @I11261@ INDI 1 NAME Adrienne /PLAXCO/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1985 1 FAMC @F14@ 0 @I11262@ INDI 1 NAME Cooper /PLAXCO/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMC @F14@ 0 @I14922@ INDI 1 NAME William James /McBRIDE/ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 Feb 1997 2 PLAC Portland, Multnomah Co., OR 1 CHR 2 DATE 24 Feb 1997 2 PLAC Legacy Emanuel Hospital, Portland, Multnomah Co., OH 1 RELI Dedicated at Cedar Mill Bible Church 1 FAMC @F21@ 1 NOTE My pregnancy with William was an amazing thing. I'd been working at IDC 2 CONT in Potland since November 1995 (and hated it!). I was good at what I 2 CONT did, but truly my heart was with Jessica - who was at day care, and I 2 CONT longed for another baby. Of course, my body needed time to heal and rest 2 CONT after the loss of Elizabeth in October 1994. In January 1996 my OB/GYN 2 CONT suggested that if I hadn't gotten pregnant within another 6 months (since 2 CONT we'd been essentially trying for a year by then), then we'd consider what 2 CONT other steps might be necessary, or if we'd just leave things as they 2 CONT were. June 12th, 1996 I had my annual PAP, at which time the doctor 2 CONT said, "Well, it's been 6 months. How would you feel if I had you go to 2 CONT an HSG - it's a procedure where they fill your uterus with dye and try to 2 CONT determine if there is any blockage or defect that we can't see from a 2 CONT regular exam." I said I supposed that would be okay. So, much to my 2 CONT surprise, they had me go that afternoon. The doctor who preformed the 2 CONT procedure said everything looked fine, the dye went through the fallopian 2 CONT tubes and ovaries the way it was supposed to. She said she thought it 2 CONT wouldn't be that much longer until I got pregnant. 2 CONT At the end of June John, Jessica & I flew out to visit John & Dianne. 2 CONT It had been nearly a year and a half since they'd seen her. While we 2 CONT were on the plane I thought, "My period should start this week... I 2 CONT wonder if I'm pregnant." I just kind of thought I was. When my period 2 CONT hadn't started by the end of our trip, we bought a pregnancy test and 2 CONT sure enough, I was pregnant. While still back east, I called Dr. 2 CONT Gravett's office and made an appointment for my first prenatal exam. It 2 CONT would be at 6 weeks gestation! Wow, that's prenatal care! At the first 2 CONT exam with Dr. Gravett he explained what course of action he'd be taking 2 CONT as my OB, and what the possibilities would be should complications 2 CONT arise. He did say that I'd need to be seen about every two weeks until 2 CONT the 14th week, then from the 14th to the 28th week every week, with 2 CONT alternating ultrasounds and vaginal exams (to check for cervical 2 CONT integrity), and then from 28th week to full term would be played 2 CONT according to how we were doing. He seemed so positive, and funny, and at 2 CONT ease. We felt good with him as our doctor. 2 CONT We had the first ultrasound at 9 weeks gestation. It was amazing to 2 CONT see those little tiny fingers and toes. It was also to confirm that 2 CONT there was only one baby - not two, as my age made me a higher candidate 2 CONT for a multiple birth. Dr. Gravett was pleased with the ultrasound and 2 CONT said everything looked good, although my blood pressure was a little high. 2 CONT The following months the stress at work, and the physical exhaustion 2 CONT from working, running a household, being a mom to a 4 year old, and being 2 CONT pregnant were getting to me. I wanted to not feel so physically 2 CONT overwhelmed - and again, I had the killer nausea. The doctor felt that 2 CONT was great since it meant I had the adequate hormone levels. The blood 2 CONT pressure continued to be a little high, and on really stressful days at 2 CONT work - more than a little high (up to 155/110). About the 18th week I 2 CONT started to have contractions, and during the 19th week, Dr. Gravett took 2 CONT me off of work and put me on disability. This meant that I was still an 2 CONT employee of IDC, but essentially had to go home to bedrest. Bedrest 2 CONT meaning 4 hours per day in bed, feet up, no stress. I had restrictions, 2 CONT like no lifting anything over 10 pounds, no travel, avoid stress, etc. 2 CONT Jessica came home from daycare once I was home (it was so nice!). 2 CONT So, from the 20th week on my blood pressure was nearly perfect. And 2 CONT things went well, until I went into labor the 17th of January and John 2 CONT and I had to rush to the hospital in the wee hours of the morning. It 2 CONT stopped itself, but not before my cervix began to dialate a little. It 2 CONT had dialated to 1 cm. The doctor on call sent me home and told me to 2 CONT take it easy, and report my findings to Dr. Gravett when I saw him at my 2 CONT next appointment. At the next appointment everything seemed fine, and so 2 CONT Dr. Gravett kept everything at status quo. For the next two days I was 2 CONT having contractions nearly continuously from about 9pm to the early hours 2 CONT of the next morning and I was able to get very little sleep. So on that 2 CONT Friday Dr. Gravett put me on Breathine and Hydroxizine to quiet the 2 CONT contractions. He said he'd keep me on it until the 36th week, and then 2 CONT nature would be allowed to take it's course. The last couple of weeks 2 CONT was when I gained my first weight of the pregnancy - 10 pounds in the two 2 CONT weeks before William was born. I felt like balloon woman, and my blood 2 CONT pressure was high. They were watching me for preeclampsia. On the 2 CONT morning of the 24th of February I woke up to very swollen everything. I 2 CONT called the doctor's office and told them I thought I needed to be seen. 2 CONT They made me an appointment for 3pm that afternoon, and Margaret, the 2 CONT nurse suggested I go swimming to see if that wouldn't bring down some of 2 CONT the water retention (the hydrostatic pressure was known to be a good 2 CONT method of taking care of it). So I quickly got Jessica and I ready and 2 CONT off we went to the swimming pool. We swam for an hour and had a lovely 2 CONT time. It was a gorgeous sunny day and the sunshine shone into the pool. 2 CONT When we got out we showered and then went home to shower "properly" and 2 CONT get dressed.
