2 CONT Gulston was a celebrated London physician, and a prominent member of
2 CONT the Virginia Company. He was born in 1572, studied at Merton College,
2 CONT Oxfored, where he took his doctor's degree, April 30, 1610, was fellow
2 CONT (DEc. 29, 1611,) and Censor of the College of Physicians, and practised
2 CONT with great success in London. In 1616 he frequently entertained Sir
2 CONT Thomas Dale and Uttomakin, Powhatan's counsellor, who had been sent to
2 CONT England.On June 14, 1619, Dr. Gulston was appointed on the committee of
2 CONT the Virginia Company in regard to the college. On Dec. 15, 1619, he
2 CONT bought ten shares of land in Virginia form various persons. He was made
2 CONT one of the King's Council for the Company in England, on July 8, 1620, and
2 CONT in July 1621, he recommended Dr. Pott for appointment as
2 CONT physician-general of Virginia. Dr. Gultson was distinguished as a Greek
2 CONT and Latin scholar, and translated several works from Greek into Latin. He
2 CONT married Helen, daughter of George Sotherton, a merchant-tailor and M. P.

2 CONT in Belmont and Monroe Counties of Ohio. The marriage between Francis
2 CONT and Margaret took place in 1808. She died after 1828. This information

2 CONT 1675; he and son, Jonathan, migrated to Somerset Co., Maryland. James
2 CONT was a schoolmaster. Family later migrated to New Jersey where James
2 CONT lives the rest of his life. Jonathan named one of his sons, Jonathan, Jr.
1 NOTE Jonathan Osborn, Jr., married in New Jersey. Children were Stephen
2 CONT 1745; Solomon Ephraim Osborn 1746; 9soldier in 1775 War), James,
2 CONT Thomas, several more kids. Some of the family stayed in NJ, but about
2 CONT 1753, Jonathan and other kids named above migrated sout to South
2 CONT Carolina where Stephen Osborn married Comfort Langham in 1765. Some
2 CONT of the clan remained in SC, but Jonathan, Ephraim, Thomas,Stephen, and
2 CONT their families moved to North Carolina and settled in Surry Co., NC, on
2 CONT Yadkin River across from Old Boonesville (first home of Daniel Boone).
2 CONT They were there as early as 1767. It was here that Solomon Ephraim
2 CONT Osborn married Elizabeth Howard.

1 NOTE in 1736 the Paxton region (now Harrisburg) of Pennsylvania was declared
2 CONT open for settlement. Among the first of a number of warrants was one
2 CONT issued to Alexander Stephen Nov 15-1737 for 150 acres. This was
2 CONT surveyed Jan 2-1738--present location Swatara Twp, Dauphin County. It
2 CONT was resurveyed Nov 14-1744-262 acres-for Andrew Stephen, who paid
2 CONT rent from Mar 1-1737. He sold the land (no date) to Hugh Davey before
2 CONT 1760. Paten 1821. He must have been the oldest son. Alexander may have
2 CONT died shortly before the resurvey. There is a Nehemiah Stephen who
2 CONT signed road petitions in 1743 and 1745. He may have been another son of
2 CONT Alexander and may have gone south as so many did about this time.
1 NOTE Could this Alexander have been the one who married Elizabeth Leslie Aug
2 CONT 6-1719 in Edinburgh? She was a daughter of James Leslie of Milntown,
2 CONT Abeerdeenshire. Alexander, periwigmaker, in S.K. p. to Elizabeth Leslie,
2 CONT daughter of late James L. Leslie...m 6 Aug., 1719, in Aberdeenshire.
2 CONT An Alexander Stephen,son, was born on July 3rd, 1720, in Edinburgh
2 CONT Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Scottish Church Records:  Batch
2 CONT c119793; dates 1714-1721; source call # 1066666 ; printout 6900814.
2 CONT Another son, John, was born  17 Sept., 1723.
1 NOTE About 1746 another Stephen family (the s was added in America) came
2 CONT to Paxton: Andrew, Alexander, Mary, Isabel with their widowed mother
2 CONT and possibly other children. The widow remarried-name not known. This
2 CONT Alexander became the grandfather of Alexander H. Stephens,
2 CONT Vice-President of the Confederacy.
1 NOTE This put a second Andrew in Paxton at about the same age as the first. In
2 CONT later years Andrew Baskins Stephens, the father of the VP, names as
2 CONT cousins: Hugh, son of Andrew; Nehemiah and James Kilgore, sons of
2 CONT Isabel Kilgore; Keziah Martin, daughter of Cornelius Atkinson. Andrew,
2 CONT father of Hugh, died in 1770.
1 NOTE The Andrew of 1744 and his cousin, Alexander, had possible common
2 CONT interests. They may have been traders. Andrew married at 39 and
2 CONT established a ferry on the Juniata River. His wife was Elizabeth,
2 CONT daughter of the trader, Francis Baskins. Francis had died the year before
2 CONT their marriage.
1 NOTE Alexander at 38 married Catherine Baskins, cousin of Elizabeth. Her
2 CONT father was James Baskins. There were 4 Baskin(s) brothers: Francis,
2 CONT James, William (killed by Indians in 1756) and Thomas.
1 NOTE In 1758 Andrew of 1744 was a battoe man taking supplies to fort
2 CONT Augusta (now Sunbury) up the Susquehanna River. With Andrew were
2 CONT Thomas Baskins and Francis Ellis, who married the widow of William
2 CONT Baskins. So the Stephens and Baskins were intermixed.
