Henry M. Greene 1 HEAL late of ? Regiment 2 K, M, S, Volunteers, in the war of the Rebellion. Personally appeared before me, a clerk U.S. District Court District of Colorado in and for said County, duly authorized to administer oaths Albert R. Greene, who being by 2 CONT me first duly sworn,___________________ according to law deposes and says: I am 58 years of age, and my postoffice address is Lecompton, Douglas Co., Kansas and by occupation I am Inspector of the General Land Office, Washington, D.C. I am a 2 CONT brother of Henry M. Greene deceased and for forty-three years last past have lived in the same State and for the greater part of this time in the same community where he has resided. Except for a period of less than two years, in 1854 and 2 CONT 1855, I have lived in the same State and practically the same part of the State with him. We were more than usually intimate even for brothers, to the day of his death. Sometime in the early fifties, I think in 1854, my father and mother who 2 CONT were at that time citizens of Metamora, Illinois, adopted Maggie Minogue, a little girl of nine or ten years of age, brought to them from an Orphan's Home in the State of New York, although as I remember it, there were no legal papers drawn to 2 CONT the effect of her adoption. Because my parents preferred it, she was called Mary instead of Maggie and by this name she was generally known in the family and community until after she married. She and my brother Henry M. Greene were married 2 CONT January 24th, 1860, in my father's house on Valley Farm, Elk Creek, Osage County, Kansas Territory. I was present at the marriage and remember it well. Shortly after her marriage my sister-in-law resumed her name of Maggie, using the initial 2 CONT "M," to indicate her middle name of Mary which she did out of respect for her foster parents just as she preferred to be called Maggie out of respect for her natural parents; thus she has ever since been called and has called herself, Maggie M. 2 CONT Greene. Also, she used to say shortly after the change was made that the middle letter might be taken to mean her maiden name of Minogue. As to the orthography of this name, it has been variously spelled Minogue, Manogue and Monogue, but in 2 CONT this case always referred to one and the same person, the orphan child, the wife of Henry M. Greene and now his lawful widow. Neither party to this marriage had ever been previously married and they were never divorced. As stated above, I 2 CONT have lived all my life with the exception of less than two years, in the same State with my brother and have been on intimate terms with him all this time and have lived in the same State and for the greater part of the time in the same 2 CONT community with the person who is his widow and know that Mary Minogue and Maggie M. Manogue are one and the same person and this from an intimate knowledge and acquaintance of nearly or quite 46 years. 1 HEAL His Post office address Lecompton, Douglas C. Kansas and he further declares that he has no interest in said case and in sot concerned in its prosecution. 1 HEAL I now certify that the above affidavit was sworn to and subscribed before me by the above affidavit this 12th day of December 1900, at Pueblo, Colorado that as to having any interest in said pension claim I certify that I have none whatever 2 CONT and as to my acquaintance with above named affiant and his credibility as witness I further certify, in my own handwriting that I have known him to be the identical person he represents himself to be and a credible and reliable person for about 2 CONT four years last past. Witness my hand and official seal the day and year last aforesaid. 1 HEAL Gardner M.
