1 NOTE      Sir Dunning was a traitor to his Saxon heritage and was appointed
2 CONC by the Norman invaders as the first Norman Lord of Lathom.  He and his
2 CONC wife, Lady Marigard De Essex are from the 2nd generation in an
2 CONC unbroken line of 35 generations.  They share this distinction with
2 CONC Lord Henry De Chester, Jr. and his wife, Lady Helene Tudor.  He died
2 CONC of pneumonia.

2 CONT      The original meaning of the place name Lathom or Latham was `the
2 CONC barn house', which probably meant a warehouse or storehouse.  The 2
2 CONC earliest place names were the Chapelry of Lathom, in County Lancaster,
2 CONC England; and Latham, in Yorkshire, England.

2 CONT      The first one to bear the Latham surname was a Saxon traitor
2 CONC named Dunning, who was living in County Lancaster about the time of
2 CONC the Norman conquest in 1066 A.D.  Because of his collaboration with
2 CONC the Normans and his betrayal of his Saxon heritage, the Normans reward
2 CONC Dunning with the lordship of the Chapelry of Lathom, the title of
2 CONC Earl, and with a knighthood.  Thus Dunning, traitor to the Saxon
2 CONC people; became Sir Dunning Latham, Earl of Lathom in the Spring of
2 CONC 1067 A.D.

2 CONT      In both early English and American records, the surname of Latham
2 CONC or Lathom has taken on many different spellings.  The most common of
2 CONC these are: Latham, Lathem, Lathim, Lathom, Lathome, Lathum, Laytham,
2 CONC Leatham, Leathom, Leetham, Leethem, Lethem, and Lethom.  The probable
2 CONC reason for these various spellings is the fact that so many of our
2 CONC early ancestors could neither read nor write.  Whenever it was
2 CONC necessary for a name to be
2 CONT written down by someone who could read and write, it was sounded out
2 CONC by different people differently and over the years as literacy
2 CONC improved, the wrong spellings had become the traditional way the
2 CONC various families chose to spell it.
2 CONT
2 CONT     The spelling Latham is the one that is the most common usage and
2 CONC is surely the original spelling.  In early English history, 7 distinct
2 CONC clans of Lathams emerged and could be found in the following counties:
2 CONC Lancaster, which was Sir Dunnings direct decendants; York, Somerset,
2 CONC Chester, Essex, Worchester, Cambridge and in London.

2 CONT     Over the years the Latham family has been very prolific, and many
2 CONC of them produced very large families indeed!  The average sized Latham
2 CONC family has been between 7 to 10 children.  Early families have been
2 CONC founded both by landed gentry and by the lower landless classes
2 CONC referred to as yeoman.

1 NOTE Siward was very young when he was confirmed Earl of Lathom.  He was
2 CONC only 19 years old.  He was mainly confirmed Lord of Lathom, because of
2 CONC the ceaseless efforts of Lord Henry De Chester, Jr. Siward was
2 CONC confirmed Lord of Lathom on 11 Nov 1092 and marry his wife only 11
2 CONC days later.  It is said never having known his own mother, Siward
2 CONC became very close to his father.  He was said never to gotten over his
2 CONC father's death.  He also couldn't get over his wife's and 2 daughters
2 CONC deathes, & committed suicide by hanging himself.  Because he comitted
2 CONC suicide he wasn't allowed to be buried in the graveyard at the
2 CONC Chapelry Of Lathom.  Instead he was buried in unblessed ground outside
2 CONC this cemetery.

1 NOTE Henry was named Earl of Lathom on his 21st birthday, 27 April 1114.
2 CONC It was often said of him that he began the fall of the Latham clan of
2 CONC the halls of power.  He was quite unfaithful to his wife Lady Alice.
2 CONC He was a mean and abusive husband.  He had a long term affair with
2 CONC Martha Jane Hargrove and he had divorced Lady Alice to marry her.  On
2 CONC the very day of his 2nd wedding, he was riding horseback with the
2 CONC wedding party.  He was galloping after Martha when he failed to duck
2 CONC under a tree limb.  He was knocked from his horse and
2 CONT broke his neck.

2 CONT      Lady Alice with the help of her friends and relatives was able to
2 CONC get the marriage annulled because it was never "legally" consummated.
2 CONC Lady Alice was named regent for her son Robert.  It is said of Martha
2 CONC Hargrove that she bore Lord Henry a bastard daughter 8 months after
2 CONC his death.

1 NOTE Historically speaking, he was called Sir Robert Latham, The Younger.
2 CONC Sir Robert never married, and it was rumored that he much prefered
2 CONC male compainionship.  He was known to have entertained many male
2 CONC compainions at his castle.  It is agreed by most historians that Sir
2 CONC Robert was killed in a fire the was delibrately set by his serfs who
2 CONC were tired of his continued abuse of his powers to order that their
2 CONC handsomest sons entertain
2 CONT him and his male compainions.  Sir Robert was the last Latham to be
2 CONC made Lord of Lathom.  The Chapelry was destroyed by the fire, but was
2 CONC later rebuilt.  Robert was not buried in the Chapelry Of Lathom's
2 CONC graveyard but rather was buried in an unmarked grave to keep his
2 CONC former serfs from doing further harm to his already burnt body.
