The Fisher family was closely associated with 2 CONT the Taylors, the Archibalds, and the Wilsons. Evidence indicates that 2 CONT the Taylors lived in the Parish of Templemore and the Archibalds in 2 CONT the Parish of Maghra. Samuel Fisher's father was a weaver by trade, 2 CONT and Samuel also was a weaver. Probably he fininished his 2 CONT apprenticeship just prior to his emigration to New England. 2 CONT 2 CONT In 1740, Samuel Fisher, in the nineteenth year, perhaps in the company 2 CONT of an lolder brother William, born in 1716, but more likely sailed 2 CONT alone to New England on the so-called "Starved Ship" to make his 2 CONT fortune n the new world. With too many passengers aboard and 2 CONT insufficient food and water, hardship struck when the ship was driven 2 CONT off course and then was becalmed. Food and water ran low and each 2 CONT passenger and member of the crew was allotted a pint of dry oatmeal 2 CONT and a small flask of water. Samuel Fisehr took a spoonful of meal, 2 CONT moistened with sea water and ate it raw. After two weeks of this 2 CONT fare, passengers were forced to eat the bodies of those who had died; 2 CONT they then decided that one must be sacrificed to save the others. The 2 CONT lot fell on Samuel Fisher and he was given two days to prepare 2 CONT himself. However, a sail appeared on the horizon, answered the 2 CONT distress signal, and gave suplies. This incident was so engraved upon 2 CONT his mind and soul that until his dying day he could not bear to see 2 CONT any food wasted ar even a bucket of water heedlessly thrown upon the 2 CONT ground. 2 CONT 2 CONT Upon arriving in New England, Samuel Fisher was indentured by the 2 CONT ship's captain to a man in Roxbury, Massachusetts for the payment of 2 CONT his passage. Evidently, he was a skilled workman for at that time 2 CONT seven years was the usual indenture to pay for a passage. When his 2 CONT time was up near the end of 1742, he made his way, undoubtedly walking 2 CONT the seventy miles to Londonderry, New Hampshire to the home of Matthew 2 CONT and Jennet Taylor. This couple had bewnn married in 1720, perhaps in 2 CONT the Parish of Templemore in Ireland, and had come to New England in 2 CONT 1721. At this time thy lived near Beaver Pond along the West Running 2 CONT Creek in Londonderry. 2 CONT 2 CONT In New Hampshire, Samuel Fisher engaged in farming and over the years 2 CONT of his life acquired a number of tracts of land and prospered, as is 2 CONT shown by the land and money he left in his will to his sons and 2 CONT daughters. For most of his life, his home was about on-half mile 2 CONT north of the Old Presbyterian Church in Londonderry in a house 2 CONT previously occupied by Thomas Wallace. Though he became a farmer, he 2 CONT retained his skill as a weaver, supplying all the family's needs. 2 CONT From his loom each of his daughters at the time of her marriage 2 CONT received a pair of bedcurtains made of bleached linen, checked with 2 CONT blue, pieces of which eventually became prized family heirlooms. He 2 CONT took great pride in helping each of his children, lands for the sons, 2 CONT and fine clothes and splendid trousseaux for the daughters. When his 2 CONT eldest daughter, Agnes, was widowed in 1777 at the age of thirty with 2 CONT six children, three under the age of seven, he mad at least three 2 CONT trips to Exeter, the county seat, for her in the settling of her 2 CONT husband's estate. 2 CONT 2 CONT Samuel Fisher was comparatively young when, at the time of the 2 CONT ministry of the Reverend David MacGregor, he was elected a ruling 2 CONT elder of the Western Parish Church of Scotland in Londonderry, 2 CONT aposition he occupied until his death. He was thoroughly grounded n 2 CONT the tenets of the church and taught his children the Christian 2 CONT principles which dominated his life. His moral excellence made him a 2 CONT prominent member of the community and he was frequently called upon to 2 CONT witness wills and to appraise estates. In 1760 he signed a bond for a 2 CONT man appointed as the guardian of tw children. 2 CONT 2 CONT When he first arrived in New England he was called a tough, young 2 CONT red-headed Scotsboy; later he was called tall and commanding, 2 CONT dignified in bearing, with a countenance grave and solemn. One 2 CONT granddaughter, Nancy Humphrey Dickey, has written, "His family worship 2 CONT was strikingly impressive. He seemed to be the very patriarch 2 CONT himself. When he knelt in prayer how deeply impressive were his 2 CONT devotions. He had a most happy faculty of improving the occurrences 2 CONT of his family. He enjoyed books and was a great lover of Watts and 2 CONT Doddridge." Also as a patriarch he commanded his household in such a 2 CONT way that the very tone in which his children in after years uttered 2 CONT the words, 'My Father,' attested their loving reverence for his 2 CONT memory." 2 CONT 2 CONT Samuel Fisher was looked upon as a reliable buisnessman and on 2 CONT November 14, 1757 he was appointed as one of the administrators of the 2 CONT estate of John Anderson whose widow, Jennet Taylor, was a younger 2 CONT sisters of his first wife, Agnes Taylor. Jennet was unable to serve 2 CONT as she gave birth to a son, Jon, three weeks after her husband's death 2 CONT and was very ill for a number of months thereafter. Later she 2 CONT remarried and Samuel Fisher on April 7, 1770 became the guardian of 2 CONT Jane, Matthew, and John, her three Anderson children, the two older 2 CONT being over fourteen years of age. 2 CONT 2 CONT On June 24, 1745, Samuel Fisher married Agnes Taylor, born March 6, 2 CONT 1726, the daughter of Matthew and Jennet Taylor with whom he was 2 CONT making his home. Sometime in 1746 or 1747, she gave birth to a 2 CONT daughter, Agnes, and died April 17, 1747, aged twenty-one years. The 2 CONT child Agnes often went by the name Nancy. 2 CONT 2 CONT The on July 29, 1747, his 25th year, Samuel Fisher married Agnes 2 CONT Wilson, the eldest of thirteen children of James and Jennet Taggart 2 CONT Wilson of Londonderry. Agnes Wilson Fisher died March 12, 1755 and 2 CONT was buried in teh Hill Cemetery. The marker at her grave, giving her 2 CONT age as twenty-seven years, was standing in 1978. She left four 2 CONT children, three daughters and a son. 2 CONT 2 CONT On February 15 1756, Samuel Fisher married Sarah Barber or Barbour, 2 CONT born May 26, 1732, of English descent. She was, by family tradition, 2 CONT a most beautiful woman and one with a very strong will and an 2 CONT independent mind. She had seven children and was the "mother" of the 2 CONT others, so much so that on the tombstone of Agnes (Nancy) it is 2 CONT recorde that she was the daughter of "Samuel and Sarah Fisher." Since 2 CONT Agnes (Nancy) died February 1, 1837, aged 90 years, this inscription 2 CONT was an error of fact but not of sentiment or memory. 2 CONT 2 CONT On November 5, 1766, a company of seventeen men, mostly from 2 CONT Londonderry and including Samuel Fisher, purchased 5,000 acres of land 2 CONT from the Wallingford Right for 200 pounds sterling. This land was 2 CONT consderably west of the Merrimac River and was covered with forests. 2 CONT In 1769, with his eldest son, James, he visited the area that was 2 CONT being set off as Francestown and acquired a large tract including what 2 CONT later came to be the common, two cemeteries, the land for the meeting 2 CONT house, horsesheds, and the Academy, and the south half of the village 2 CONT of Fracestown. In later years he conveyed most of this land to his 2 CONT son James who settled there in 1770. 2 CONT 2 CONT In public affairs he took an active part in the political life of 2 CONT Londonderry. He was chosen in 1752 and 1757 as appraiser and 2 CONT assessor, in 1758 as tax collector for his district, and in 1762 he 2 CONT served as a grand juror. In 1773, 1774, and 1781 he was elected 2 CONT moderator of the annual town meetings, and in 1779 he represented 2 CONT Londonderry at the General Court. 2 CONT On June 24, 1776, inresponse to general request from the Continental 2 CONT Congress, he was on of the signers in Londonderry of a declaration 2 CONT "We, the Subscribers, do hereby solemnly engage and promise, that we 2 CONT will, the utmost of our power, at the Risque of our Lives and 2 CONT Fortunes, with arms, oppose the Hostile proceedings of the British 2 CONT Fleet and Armies, against the United American Colonies." On September 2 CONT 26, 1776 he enlisted as a soldier to reinforce the army of the United 2 CONT States of America at New York for ten weeks to serve in Captain Daniel 2 CONT Hunnel's Company in Colonel Thomas Tash's Regiment of the State of New 2 CONT Hampshire. On September 26 he received eight pouds eight shillings as 2 CONT an advance for bounty and billeting. Perhaps he did not serve the 2 CONT full time, for on November 26, 1776, as a consequence of the great 2 CONT depreciation in the value of paper money, the exorbitant prices, and 2 CONT speculators, a meeting was held at Dracut, Massachusetts to petition 2 CONT the Congress and the State Legislatures for relief and to devise 2 CONT measures for the protection of the people. Samuel Fisher was chosen 2 CONT to represent Londonderry and the convetion prepared a petititon to the 2 CONT general courts of Massachusetts and New Hampshire that the resolves of 2 CONT the Continental Congress on the price of articles of necessary 2 CONT consumption be enforced more stricltly. 2 CONT 2 CONT On March 27, 1797, Samuel Fisher, then nearly 75 years old, made his 2 CONT will, adding a codicil on July 4, 1797, naming his youngest child, 2 CONT John, and his wife, Sarah, as the executors. After his death on April 2 CONT 10, 1806, the will was proven by oath by Thomas Patterson and Isaac 2 CONT McAllester on April 16 and accepted for probate at the court in 2 CONT Exeter. John Fisher served as the sole executor as Sarah refused on 2 CONT May 1 the trust on the basis of health, age, and difficulty of travel 2 CONT between Londonderry and Exeter. In his will, Samuel Fisher remembered 2 CONT all of his living children in the order of their births. Sarah, his 2 CONT fourth child, predeceased him, but her husband, Matthew Taylor, was 2 CONT given thirty dollars and some land. The codicil, however, changed the 2 CONT land to one hundred dollars, perhaps because in 1797 he was enrolled 2 CONT at Dartmouth College preparing for the ministry. No mention is mde of 2 CONT son William, next youger than Margaret, since he died in 1775 in the 2 CONT 13th year of his life. Also Marth, who never married, is mentioned 2 CONT before Ebenezer, probably since Samuel Fisher was giving property 2 CONT jointly to his sons Ebenezer and John, the only sons still residing in 2 CONT Londonderry. It should be noted that Samuel Fisher owned a Negro boy 2 CONT who was serving as an indentured person and not as a slave. It is not 2 CONT known whatever became of this Negro boy. 2 CONT 2 CONT Samuel Fisher died on April 10, 1806 and was buried in the Hill 2 CONT Cemetery in Londonderry between the graves of his wife Agnes Wilson 2 CONT Fisher and his son William Sarah Barber Fisher died February 3, 1813, 2 CONT aged eighty years, and was buried beside her husband in the Hill 2 CONT Cemetery. One marker carried the vital data for Samuel and Sarah, and 2 CONT the stone, though half submerged or gone, was standing in 1978. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Haverhill Museum, published in Haverhill, Massachusetts, in its 2 CONT issue of Tuesday, April 29, 1806, carried a lengthy obituary of Samuel 2 CONT Fisher. Among other things it stated that 2 CONT "he possessed a strength of intellectual capacity, with a steadfast 2 CONT sincerity of heart, which do honor to his memory as a man and as a 2 CONT Christian. Master of a pathetic perspicuity and solemnity of address, 2 CONT especially on interestng subjects, he commanded the respectful 2 CONT attention of those he conversed with, whether learned or illiterate. 2 CONT Far from engrossing the conversation, he was sociable, free, solid, 2 CONT orderly and edifying....Much respected as a citizen, esteemed as a 2 CONT husband, honored as an instructing and examplary father, diligent in 2 CONT business, patient in trouble, pious and puntual in devotional duties, 2 CONT he lived; with resignation to, and desires for death, he died; 2 CONT recommending Christ and religion to the living." 1 SOUR @S30@ 1 SOUR @S31@ 1 SOUR @S33@ 1 BIRT 2 DATE 24 May 1722 2 PLAC Londonderry, Ireland 1 DEAT 2 DATE 10 Jun 1806 2 PLAC Londonderry, New Hampshire 1 BURI 2 PLAC Londonderry, New Hampshire 1 REFN H29G-31 1 FAMS @F64@ 1 FAMS @F79@ 1 FAMS @F104@ 1 FAMC @F116@ 0 @I223@ INDI 1 NAME Sarah /BARBER/ 1 SEX F 1 NOTE Sarah Barber (or Barbour) Fisher was of English descent.
