Dr. 2 CONC Clarence R. McLaughlin, Gardiner, Kennebec County medical examiner, 2 CONC said he believed Clifford A. MacMaster, 13 Liberty St., father of 2 CONC three young children, died instantly in the crash. MacMaster was alone 2 CONC in his vehicle when the accident happened around 9:30 at the 2 CONC intersection of Bridge Street and Highland Avenue, near the center of 2 CONC downtown Gardiner. Gardiner Police Lt. Ralph A. Chase identified the 2 CONC driver of the truck, owned by Wakefield's Shell Oil Co., Gardiner, as 2 CONC Robert Godbout, 29, RFD 3, Gardiner. He received, police said, only a 2 CONC cut finger. Godbout told police he was proceeding down Highland Avenue 2 CONC toward Bridge Street when about half- way down the steep hill, almost 2 CONC opposite Highland Avenue Methodist Church, he realized his brakes were 2 CONC not working. He estimated his vehicle's speed at the time at between 2 CONC 20 and 25 miles per hour. Godbout said he tried to "gear down" the 2 CONC truck in an effort to slow it. He was still unable to stop and the 2 CONC truck, loaded with about 600 gallons of fuel oil, pushed through the 2 CONC intersection. Chase said the MacMaster vehicle was struck almost 2 CONC directly opposite the intersection of Highland Avenue with Bridge 2 CONC Street near Williams Oil Co. and Walker Lumber Co. State Trooper 2 CONC Alfred A. Howes, among other authorities investigating, reported the 2 CONC station wagon was hit broadside just in back of the left front wheel. 2 CONC The station wagon was then pushed about 13 feet to the edge of the 2 CONC busy street, through guardrails and down a 10-foot embankment, landing 2 CONC adjacent to a spur track of the Maine Central Railroad. Coming to 2 CONC rest on top of the demolished MacMaster vehicle was the heavy oil 2 CONC truck. The spur track is for use by local industries on both sides of 2 CONC Cobbossee Stream. Authorities described the front end of the truck as 2 CONC "extensively damaged." The body was not removed from the car and 2 CONC neither vehicle hauled from the scene for about an hour after the 2 CONC accident to allow investigators and authorities to view it. Among them 2 CONC was Jon A. Lund, Augusta, Kennebec County attorney. Later in the day, 2 CONC Lund said it was determined that there was "failure of the truck brake 2 CONC line inside the drum. The master cylinder was empty." Lund said the 2 CONC accident is still under investigation by his department and the 2 CONC police. The dramatic holiday season death of the well-liked fireman 2 CONC shocked Gardiner citizens, many of whom knew him as a friendly, 2 CONC helpful person. City officials, including Mayor Wallace E. Shepard and 2 CONC City Manager Phillip G. Richards, Chief William F. MacDonald of the 2 CONC city's police and fire departments and fellow firemen and police were 2 CONC among those who went to the accident and later joined in expressing 2 CONC tributes to MacMaster and condolences to his family. Gardiner firemen 2 CONC stood by at the crash scene in the event of fire. Some dry powder was 2 CONC spread as a preventive measure. A wrecker and the city's Civil 2 CONC Defense rescue truck were used to move the truck and car. MacMaster's 2 CONC oldest child, Robert F., is about 10. Another son, Kenneth, is about 7 2 CONC and a daughter, Sandra, about 1 year. Among survivors is a brother, 2 CONC Clyde V. MacMaster, Gardiner, former Gardiner Public Safety 2 CONC Commissioner and a former deputy U.S. Marshal. 2 CONT 2 CONT Clifford Alvin MacMaster was born in Foustville (Forrestville), Conn., 2 CONC June 11, 1930, son of Forest (Forrest) A. and Ida Baston MacMaster. He 2 CONC is survived by his widow, Mrs. Charlotte Bean MacMaster; his mother; 2 CONC two sons, Robert F. and Kenneth G. He was 2 CONC 23 years of age and was born in Gardiner, March 12, 1895, and was a 2 CONC private in Company C, 103rd Infantry, 26th Division. He received his 2 CONC education in the public schools of Richmond. This brave young man who 2 CONC has made the supreme sacrifice was among the first of the Gardiner 2 CONC lads to answer the call for volunteers enlisting on May 28, 1917, in 2 CONC the old Second Maine. From the camp at Augusta, he went with his 2 CONC company to Saco where they served as a bridge guard. Alexander came to this country "by way of the sea." He 2 CONC married Charlotte J. Hubbard who was born in 1844, possibly in 2 CONC Massachusetts. Alexander and Charlotte apparently lived in Greene, 2 CONC Maine, for a time in that their son George was born there in 1867. 2 CONC Another son, Edwin, was born in Lawrence, Mass., in 1869. Son William 2 CONC was also born in Lawrence, Mass., although his date of birth is not 2 CONC presently known. Alexander eventually came to Gardiner, Maine, where 2 CONC he took up residence and work. He was a papermaker, woodworker and 2 CONC farmer. He is listed in an 1880 Gardiner (Maine) city directory as a 2 CONC papermaker employed by Richards & Co. This was the former mill of the 2 CONC John Savells Co., constructed in 1806, the first paper mill in 2 CONC Gardiner. Subsequent to it being owned by the Savells Co., it was 2 CONC owned and operated by the Hodgkins Paper Co., then Richards & Co. 2 CONC Alexander lived in Gardiner at 61 High Holborn St., from at least 1880 2 CONC (probably for several years prior, as well) to about 1900 when he 2 CONC moved to a farm in Richmond, Maine (believed to have been on the 2 CONC Beedle Road in Richmond). He died of bronchial pneumonia on Mar 5 1920 2 CONC at the farm of his son, George F. McMaster in Richmond, likely the 2 CONC same farm where Alexander himself had moved at the turn of the 2 CONC century. His wife, Charlotte J. Hubbard, died in 1911, presumably in 2 CONC Richmond. In addition to three sons, he was survived by three 2 CONC brothers and one sister. Alexander and his wife Charlotte are buried 2 CONC at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner Maine. 2 CONT 2 CONT KENNEBEC JOURNAL, MAR 6 1920 Alexander W. McMaster, for many years a 2 CONC resident of Gardiner, passed away at 3:30 a.m. Friday, March 5, at the 2 CONC home of his son in Richmond, aged 85. He was born in Scotland and when 2 CONC a young man followed the sea. For many years he worked as a 2 CONC papermaker and some 20 years ago settled on a farm in Richmond. He is 2 CONC survived by three brothers, one sister, and three sons, William T. of 2 CONC Manchester, N.H., George F. of Richmond, and Edwin V. of Gardiner; 2 CONC also several grandchildren, one of whom at present is in Turkey in the 2 CONC service of the U.S. Army. Funeral services will be held at the home of 2 CONC his son in Richmond Sunday afternoon at 1:30. KENNEBEC JOURNAL, MAR 8 2 CONC 1920 The funeral of the late Alexander W. McMaster was to have been 2 CONC held at 1:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon but was postponed to Tuesday at 2 CONC the same hour on account of the condition of the roads. KENNEBE
