Her 1 CONC parents were born and died in New York. 1 CONT "Henry Harrison Mathes brought his wife and five sons, and came to 1 CONC Kansas, with his oldest son Samuel and his wife and two children, over 1 CONC land by team and wagon. They settled in Rice County, Kansas, July 4, 1 CONC 1872. Samuel homesteaded the N.E. 1/4 of sec. 10-20-6 W. Henry Harrison 1 CONC MAthes took the N.W. 1/4 and his son James, the S.W. 1/4 of the same 1 CONC section. They shipped their household goods as far as Kansas City and 1 CONC stored them there until the railroad was built on to Newton, KS. From 1 CONC there they hauled them to their homesteads in Rice County. Sameul 1 CONC quarried rock on his claim and built a two story house, doing most of the 1 CONC work himself. Here were born to Samuel and Susan Mathes: Clara Belle, 1 CONC Franklin Edward, Harry Albert, Cora Agnes, and Gilbert Archer. Henry 1 CONC Harrison Mathes later became disabled and moved to Hutchinson, Kansas, 1 CONC where he died. Then Drusilla made her home with Samuel Swinford Mathes, 1 CONC her son, until her death in 1892. Henry Harrison, Drusilla, Samuel 1 CONC Swinford, and Clara Belle are buried in a little cemetery located in the 1 CONC S.W. corner of the N.W. 1/4 of sec. 11-20-6, W. which is just across the 1 CONC road from Samuel Swinford Mathes' original homestead in Rice County, 1 CONC Kansas. All of these graves can be found very easily as they have a 1 CONC concrete mound over all of them. The 1 CONC James Madison Mathes biography in "Pioneer Preachers of Indiana" by 1 CONC Madison Evans, pages 278, 279, says, "The family had been Presbyterians 1 CONC almost from the beginning of Protestantism; but early in the present 1 CONC century the father of Jeremiah Mathes, and his whole family, were 1 CONC converted to the views of Regular Baptists, with whom they all became 1 CONC identified. 1 CONT About the year 1825 the parents of Elder Mathes became convinced of 1 CONC the errors of the Calvinistic system, and of the folly of all human 1 CONC creeds. In consequence of this conviction they left the Baptist Church 1 CONC and united with the Old Christian body." James Madison Mathes was an 1 CONC early preacher in the Martinsville Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 1 CONC with which members of Jeremiah's family and the Treats were associated. 1 CONT Jeremiah married Florence Cameron Nov. 21 or 23, 1803. She was a 1 CONC daughter of John Canaday Cameron and Margaret Jones. Writings by members 1 CONC of the family say 1802 and 1804, but the bond as recorded in Jefferson 1 CONC County, KY, is 1803. James Mathes, father of Jeremiah, was the bondsman 1 CONC and Edw'd. Denny a witness. The bond indicates that consent in writing 1 CONC was given by James Mathes, Sr., and Henry Netherton, Sr., further stating 1 CONC "she lives with Henry Netherton, Sr. and her parents do not live in this 1 CONC state." The gravestone inscription for Florence Mathes gives her 1 CONC birthdate as Mar. 3, 1786, aged 77y 10m 15d. Julia, her daughter, states 1 CONC in her writings that her mother was born the 9th day of March, 1785. This 1 CONC is from a xerox'd page of her notebook in her own handwriting. 1 CONT All of the children were taught to read and write and reading of the 1 CONC Scriptures was a daily occurrence. The daughters were well read, pious, 1 CONC and interested in the topics of the day. They were an extraordinary 1 CONC family and without their writings we would know so little of the family 1 CONC history. 1 CONT Around 1816 Jeremiah and his family left Kentucky for Indiana. The 1 CONC following excerpt from an OLD HISTORY OF OWEN COUNTY INDIANA, 1888, gives 1 CONC much of interest of the family and their life in Indiana: Jeremiah Mathes 1 CONC became a resident of the township about the year 1820, moving here from 1 CONC Washington County, where he settled as early as 1816, while on his way to 1 CONC Sullivan County. In 1819 he came to the New Purchase for the purpose of 1 CONC securing a home. He selected a claim where Thomas Sandy afterward 1 CONC settled, which land he could not pay for at the time on account of his 1 CONC money not being acceptable at the land office. As soon as he ascertained 1 CONC this fact, he went to his native state, Kentucky, and procured a 1 CONC sufficiant amount of good money to enable him to enter his claim. But 1 CONC judge to his suprise and chagrin upon his return to find the in 1 CONC possession of another who had bought it from under him during his 1 CONC absence. To purchase another's claim was considered by early settlers as 1 CONC an act of contemptible meanness and a person guilty of it at once lost 1 CONC his standing in the community and became virtually osterized. 1 CONT Not securing the land of his choice, Mathes afterwards purchased 1 CONC from the goverment a homestead in section 30 about one mile Northwest of 1 CONC his first choice. In the new country he exercised his mechanical skill, 1 CONC making chairs and other furniture for the early settlers. He also 1 CONC operated a blacksmith shop and was considered the handyman of the 1 CONC community. Hewas a resident of the township until 1830 at which time he 1 CONC sold out to Daniel Goss and moved to Morgan County, Indiana, where he 1 CONC died many years ago. The site of Jeremiah's and Florence's cabin was on a 1 CONC bluff overlooking the White River near Gossport. 1 CONT Jeremiah was past 78 years of age when he passed away Sep. 5, 1856. 1 CONC An obituary is found in one of the bound copies of "The Christian Record" 1 CONC published by James Madison Mathes, pages 287-8, and is given as follows: 1 CONT "Another Old Soldier Gone! Martinsville, Ind. Sept. 9th, 1856. My 1 CONC Dear Brother James; Sorrowing and sad I take up my pen, to give you the 1 CONC mournful intelligence of the death of our dear Father, Jeremiah Mathes. 1 CONC On the 5th instant just as the clock told 12, M, his happy spirit took 1 CONC its flight, to join the multitude of the redeemed, on the other side of 1 CONC Jordan! We arrived at Father's on Thursday, the 4th instant, on our way 1 CONC home from Terre Haute and found him very low, and given up by his 1 CONC physicians. I watched by his bed till Friday, twelve o'clock, when, 1 CONC leaning on the rod and staff of Jehovah, he passed the "dark valley of 1 CONC the shadow of death," and without a struggle, while that calm serenity 1 CONC which only virtue can inspire beamed in his countenance, crossed the 1 CONC river of Death in glorious triumph! 1 CONT O, my brother! It was then I felt my heart almost die within me! to 1 CONC see the cruel spoiler, Death with heartless glee, with icy fingers, 1 CONC sporting with our dear father's silver locks. And then to see him sink 1 CONC beneath the angry surge of death's dark and sullen wave, required all the 1 CONC man within me to bear and shock! 1 CONT But the Christian's hope sustained our dear mother and weeping 1 CONC sister and brothers, as we hung in solemn and mournful stillness upon his 1 CONC last accents, anxious to catch the last words of a fond Father, or 1 CONC lingered around his couch of death. And for that hope we are truly 1 CONC thankful, "That sweet, that blissful hope, that hope through Jesus given; 1 CONC when days and years are passed, we all shall meet in Heaven." 1 CONT A short time before we got there, and while he could speak plain, he 1 CONC told his children who were present that he had tried to raise them in the 1 CONC "nurture and admonition of the Lord," Saying to our dear Mother that if 1 CONC it was the Lord's will, he was ready to go; said he thought the time of 1 CONC his departure was at hand, but he could say with the Apost'e, "I have 1 CONC fought a good fight, I have finished my course; I have kept the faith; 1 CONC henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the 1 CONC Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me in that day." 1 CONT On Wednesday, the 27th of August, he received a slight abrasion of 1 CONC the skin on the thumb of his left hand, not however producing blood; but 1 CONC his blood being in an Erysipelatus condition, it inflamed, and baffling 1 CONC the skill of the best physicians, terminated fatally on the 9th day, 1 CONC (being Friday the 5th of September). His sufferings were most severe, but 1 CONC he bore it without a murmur, and now released from pain, rests in the 1 CONC Paradise of God! 1 CONT John C. Mathes" 1 CONT Excerpted here is a portion of the summation of which James M. 1 CONC Mathes continues: "He emigrated from Virginia to Kentucky at an early 1 CONC day, where he married our mother, Florence Cameron, and settled on 1 CONC Harrod's Creek, near where the town of Brownsborough now stands. Here he 1 CONC became a member of the regular Baptist Church, where for many years he 1 CONC officiated as clerk. In 1816 he emigrated to Indiana, and after stopping 1 CONC a few years in Jackson County, he finally located in the New Purchase, 1 CONC about one mile from the place where Gossport now stands, on the West 1 CONC branch of the White River. Subsequently he removed to Adams township in 1 CONC Morgan County, some five miles south of Stilesville, Ind., where he 1 CONC resided ever since, and where he died. He was a man of more than ordinary 1 CONC mind, and from a child had known and read the Scriptures. Chistianity was 1 CONC his theme during his long life. He was kind and tender-hearted, and knew 1 CONC how to forgive an injury. He was kind and benevolent to the poor, and 1 CONC always observed the golden rule in all business transactions. He never 1 CONC engaged in doubtful speculations, and kept out of debt. Those acquainted 1 CONC with him will bear us witness that he was emphatically an HONEST MAN. 1 CONT He raised a family of eleven children, six sons and five daughters, 1 CONC all of whom are yet living and all members of the Christian Church, and 1 CONC three of his sons, viz: J. M. Mathes, J. C. Mathes, and J. J. W. Mathes 1 CONC are preachers of the Gospel of Christ. 1 CONT He was a kind and affectionate husband and tender and devoted 1 CONC father. He loved his children much, and no father was ever more beloved 1 CONC by his children." 1 CONT Florence (Cameron) Mathes survived her husband by nearly seven and 1 CONC one-half years, attaining the age of nearly seventy-nine. In an unpublished 1 CONC manuscript, "Finley - 1 CONT Shields" by Major Albert Finley France, of Annapolis, MD., he says that 1 CONC James Doak, his wife Elizibeth, and five children, Samual, David, John, 1 CONC Robert and Thankful emigrated from North of Ireland to America, landing 1 CONC in Newcastle, Delaware in 1708 and settled in Chester Co., PA. 1 CONT An error inthe data handed down in the family has the immigrant 1 CONC ancestor written as "George", this is not correct, subsequint research 1 CONC shows that his name was Alexander Mathews. Alexander is said 1 CONC to have went from Pennsylvania to Augusta Co., VA in 1737, mentioned in 1 CONC "Abstracts of Augusta,Co., by Chalkley" in 1746, (Vol. I, p. 25). His 1 CONC first Land Grant was from The Honorable Thomas Lord Fairfax, baron of 1 CONC Cameron in that part of Great Britain called Scotland, Proprietor of the 1 CONC Northern Neck of Virginia for 400 acres on September 14, 1749, and went 1 CONC on record in the Northern Neck Book "G" at page 321. 1 CONT Another grant of land for 265 acres on Aug. 6, 1750, is recorded in 1 CONC Northern Neck Book "G" pg 405. These tracts of land in Augusta Co., by 1 CONC the division of Counties, were successively in Frederick Co., Shenandoah, 1 CONC Co., and Warren Co. According to Dr. Dobson's Sketch he was an elder in Salem 1 CONC Church for 40 years, a Trustee of Washington College for 46 years and 1 CONC secretary most of that time, served as a civil magistrate of Washington 1 CONC Co. for 36 years. Before the Civil War he freed his slaves as they 1 CONC reached 21, sent them to Liberia and maintained them for the first year, 1 CONC and during the war he was an uncompromising "Union Man". He had no 1 CONC children and at his death he left one-half his estate to the church and 1 CONC college, and interest to be used as he directed. A memorial was placed in 1 CONC Salem Church to his memory, with the inscription, "The Lord Loveth A 1 CONC Cheerful Giver". Another quotation states: "During the Civil War most of 1 CONC the desendants of the Mathes family were on the Union side. There was an 1 CONC Ebenezer Mathes, a very wealthy man for that country, who 'set his negros 1 CONC free' before the war by sending some of them to Liberia and some to the 1 CONC free soil states to the North'. At his death since the war he left all 1 CONC his property to charitable causes, excepting some small legacies to 1 CONC relatives. He was a member of 1 CONC Elks, Masons, Knights of Templar, Shriners, Knights of Pythias and Royal 1 CONC Order of Lions. He was elected Senior Vice Commander in Chief of the 1 CONC United Spanish War Veterans at the 25th Annual National Encampment in 1 CONC Chattanooga, TN, in 1923, he was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
