By means of this outfit he can take a picture of the teeth, roots and all, to 2 CONC ascertain the source of trouble or their condition. These pictures can be developed in five minutes and show the tooth structure to the minutest detail. The x-ray has proven a boon to the dental 2 CONC profession and Dr. Smith's machine has every known device to add to its effectiveness. The transformer is operated by a motor instead of a coil, a new feature, which in itself materially increases 2 CONC the worth of the x-ray apparatus." 1 NOTE Other articles from the Republican announce: "The office windows of Dr. K.V. Smith, dentist, were bedecked with fine new signs this afternoon." Smith's dental parlors, has been removed and placed in the discard for the 2 CONC present at least." 1 NOTE In an article dated July 21, 1921, reporting on the Kiwanis meeting, it said: "Members of the club listened to an instructive and interesting discourse on the 'care of teeth' by Dr. K.V. Smith. He 2 CONC said that Dr. W. J. Mayo of Rochester had ascribed seventy per cent of our physical ills to poor teeth and urged upon all the strictest attention of their teeth. The doctor said that statistics 2 CONC showed that the efficiency of children in schools where dental clinics were held had been increased from 40 to 60 percent. He gave some pointers on the use of the toothbrush, declaring that the 2 CONC proper method was with the up and down stroke. At the conclusion of his talk, all present joined in singing "The Old Family Tooth Brush." 1 NOTE He was elected president of the Red Wing Dental Society, and then appointed state dentist at the Training School, where he spent two half-days a week attending to the dental needs of inmates. Smith, which was stolen from in front of his home on East Avenue, on Friday evening. The thieves, in order to give the impression that the car was theirs, according 2 CONC to passersby, came down the walk from the Smith home, jumped into the car, and drove off." 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Another Republican article states: "Baseball fans of Red Wing are reminded of the meeting to be held at the Chamber of Commerce rooms on Wednesday night, at which time definite action with regard to 2 CONC organizing an independent ball club will be taken. Dr. K.V. Smith seems certain that Red Wing will have a ball club and he urges all business men to turn out and give the proposition the necessary 2 CONC support." Another reports: "Dr. K.V. Smith will send his 'surprise' team of Kiwanis kittenballers into action against the first team, which will rpresent the club in the city league, at Island park 2 CONC tonight at 6:15 p.m. The game is the result of a defy issued by the doctor at Thursday's gathering of the Kiwanians." A later article reported that the Red Wing Ball Club had, indeed, been 2 CONC organized, with K.V. Smith as a member of the board of directors. 1 NOTE He was an avid and award winning golfer. He was the club champion of the Red Wing Golf Club. Loved to hunt duck and pheasant. Great fisherman. Smith had been in business nearly 50 years. The death of W. J. Smith, which occurred Thursday, Dec. 9, at the Montevideo hospital, marks the passing of 2 CONC Montevideo's oldest merchant. Mr. Smith was 80 years, nine months of age and had been in the hardware business in the city for nearly fifty years, coming here in 1895. Family and friends came to pay 2 CONC their final respects to the deceased at funeral services held Sunday afternoon, Dec. 12. Rev. Fred W. Madson was the officiating pastor at services held from the First Baptist Church. At that time, Mr. Smith's father operated a grocery store in that city. 1 NOTE When he was a small child he went with his parents to Prescott, in Pierre county, Wisconsin, where Lake St. Croix entgers the Mississippi River about 25 miles south of St. Paul. Mr. Smith received 2 CONC his schooling there, completing his high school education. There were four sons in the Smith family and as there were not many trades to be taken up at that time, their father deemed it a good plan 2 CONC to go into farming. 1 NOTE The Smiths in 1878 took land north of Browns Valley on the banks of Lake Traverse. There William Jr. learned farming, remaining in that occupation until 1882 when he became agent and operator for 2 CONC the Great Northern Railway at Manvel, N.D. where he remained for three and one half years. 1 NOTE In 1886 he was transferred to Rugby, N.D. and in 1887 to Willow City, N.D. 1 NOTE On August 20, 1888, he was united in marriage to Miss Edith Benson of Browns Valley. They lived in North Dakota until 1899 when they moved to Browns Valley where Mr. Smith went into a general 2 CONC merchandise store with his wife's brother, Joe Benson. 1 NOTE It was in the year 1895 that Mr. Smith sold his interest in the Browns Valley store and came to Montevideo to buy out Harry Champlin's interest in the hardware firm of Champlin and Peterson. In 1910 2 CONC Mr. Smith became the sole owner of the store, and had since continued in business with his son, Howard. 1 NOTE In failing health for several years, Mr. Smith became seriously ill a week previous to his death which resulted from a heart condition. 1 NOTE In addition to being Montevideo's oldest merchant, Mr. Smith was much esteemed for his interest in civic and community affairs. He was a member of Montevideo Lodge No. 75, IOOF, having served as 2 CONC recording secretary for 19 years and also as district deputy grand master. He was treasurer of the school board and also had served on the city council. He was a member of the Ancient Order of 2 CONC United Workmen and at one time served as treasurer of that organization. 1 NOTE Mr. and Mrs. Smith, longtime members of the First Baptist church, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in August, 1938. 1 NOTE He leaves to mourn his death his wife, two sons, Dr. K.V. Secord was a magistrate and in 1811 he was a member of the Legislative Assembly.
