The son of a Boston 1 CONC Unitarian minister, Emerson followed in his father's footsteps by 1 CONC attending the Boston Latin School (1812-17) and Harvard College 1 CONC (1817-21). After running a school for young women, Emerson returned 1 CONC (1825) to Harvard to study divinity and was licensed to preach the next 1 CONC year. Suffering from tuberculosis, he sailed to Charleston, S.C., and St. 1 CONC Augustine, Fla., in late 1826. When he returned to Boston, he preached 1 CONC from various pulpits before being ordained (1829) pastor of the 1 CONC prestigious Second Unitarian Church in Boston. In September 1829 he 1 CONC married Ellen Louisa Tucker. After Ellen's death in February 1831, 1 CONC Emerson underwent a religious and personal crisis, and the next year he 1 CONC resigned his pulpit and sailed for Europe. There he met William 1 CONC Wordsworth and Thomas Carlyle, forming a lifelong friendship with the 1 CONC latter. After his return to the United States in 1833, Emerson moved 1 CONC (1834) to Concord, Mass. In 1835 he married Lydia Jackson and began a 1 CONC successful career as a lecturer. He soon became one of the leaders of the 1 CONC transcendental movement, questioning the established views of literature, 1 CONC philosophy, and religion. He helped to start the Transcendental Club in 1 CONC 1836 and published Nature (1836), a book showing the organicism of all 1 CONC life and the function of nature as a visible manifestation of invisible 1 CONC spiritual truths. In 1837 he delivered his address "The AMERICAN 1 CONC SCHOLAR," often called America's literary declaration of independence, 1 CONC before Harvard's Phi Beta Kappa Society; in 1838 his address before the 1 CONC Harvard Divinity School challenged the very foundations of conservative 1 CONC UNITARIANISM. He cofounded (1840) the transcendentalists' periodical, the 1 CONC Dial, and edited it from 1842 until its collapse in 1844. Emerson 1 CONC established himself during the next decade with the publication of Essays 1 CONC (2 vols., 1841, 1844), Poems (1847), Nature: Addresses and Lectures 1 CONC (1849), and Representative Men (1850). By 1850 he was becoming known as 1 CONC the "sage of Concord," and his ensuing lectures and books met with public 1 CONC success. English Traits (1856) analyzed English society and compared it 1 CONC to American society, and The Conduct of Life (1860) showed his growing 1 CONC conservatism, as he balanced his earlier belief in freedom against the 1 CONC "beautiful necessity" of fate. He studied in Judge Shippen's office and was 1 CONT admitted to the Lancaster bar on August 3rd, 1758. He afterwards 1 CONT became an eminent counselor-at-law and was appointed, August 16th, 1 CONT 1777, First Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, 1 CONT being re-appointed August 9th, 1784. He was associated with Chief 1 CONT Justice McKean. During the War of the Revolution he was Chairman of 1 CONT the Committee of Safety and Commissary and superintendent of the 1 CONT arsenal, barracks, and British prisoners, then at Lancaster. The 1 CONT fear with which the British regarded him is indicated in the 1 CONT following Tory verses of the day: 'We will, must, tho' mighty 1 CONT Laurens frown, Or Hancock, with his rabble, hunt us down; Should 1 CONT Atlee summon to his savage bar, To tremble at his rod, be from us 1 CONT far.' On August 17, 1791, he was appointed President Judge of the 1 CONT First District Court of Pennsylvania, in the circuit embracing 1 CONT Chester, Lancaster, York, and Dauphin counties. While on the bench at 1 CONT York, he was taken suddenly ill, and after suffering several days 1 CONT from a violent attack of bilious fever, died at his country sea, in 1 CONT the vicinity of Lancaster, Pa, on September 9, 1793, and was buried 1 CONT in the yard of St. James Church, of which he had been a vestryman for 1 CONT a number of years. In private life Judge Atlee was respected by 1 CONT all who knew him. He was remarkably handsome in feature and courteous 1 CONT in manner, and his house was the resort of the beauty and 1 CONT intelligence of the surrounding country. From Hon. Wm. Augustus 1 CONT Atlee, Esq., Chairman of the Council of Safety and Commissary of 1 CONT Prisoners: Lancaster, September 8, 1777 Sir: -- I returned 1 CONT yesterday evening from Lebanon, where the Hessian prisoners are 1 CONT stationed. There are at that place between 8 and 9 hundred of the, 1 CONT who are placed in the churches; those being the only public buildings 1 CONT to be had for their reception. While at Lebanon, the inhabitants 1 CONT requested I would endeavor to clear one of their churches, in which 1 CONT the ministers of the different denominations had agreed to perform 1 CONT Divine service alternately. The request seemed reasonable, sand, 1 CONT hearing that the British prisoners whom I had sent to Reading were 1 CONT carried forward to Betheham, I sent an express to Mr. Waller at 1 CONT Reading, to know if about 300 could be accommodated there, but by his 1 CONT answer find they cannot. I should be glad we could remove some of 1 CONT them from Lebanon, as they appear to me to be too much crowded in the 1 CONT churches, and in danger of getting sickly; to prevent which, as much 1 CONT as possible, I have requested Dr. Oldenbruck to attend and administer 1 CONT medicine to them, until I can have directions from Dr. Shippen, to 1 CONT whom I write that he may appoint some person there to that charge; 1 CONT and have also desired Dr. Oldenbruck in the meantime to provide some 1 CONT suitable space as a hospital and in case any of them should fall 1 CONT sick, to remove them from the well and have them properly taken care 1 CONT of. Those churches will be rather too airy for them in the cold 1 CONT weather, and as the inhabitants seem desirous of having Barracks 1 CONT erected there, I make no doubt, if orders were given for that 1 CONT purpose, that such as would contain a thousand men would be up and 1 CONT under roof in a very short time, as the people, to regain their 1 CONT places of worship, would heartily join in forwarding the work. Stone 1 CONT and other materials for such work abound there. The situation is fine 1 CONT and healthy, and it is a good provision country. I was lately over at 1 CONT York, at the request of the Board of War, to examine the state of the 1 CONT prisoners at that place, who were reported to be sickly. The fever 1 CONT and fluxes which has been among them, had abated, and the chief of 1 CONT those who were unwell were in the smallpox, which had taken off 2 or 1 CONT 3. 1 carried over a blank appointment from Dr. Shippen, which I 1 CONT filled up for Dr. Jameson and prevailed on him to accept it, and have 1 CONT no doubt that he will take the proper care of them. I want much to 1 CONT have a peep at some of the shooting matches, but seem to think my 1 CONT duty calls me first towards Bethleham, to visit our children there, 1 CONT and to see what is done to the officers at Beartown. It is horrid 1 CONT expensive travelling. There are a few of the sick of the British 1 CONT prisoners here yet, I think about 40. When they can be removed 1 CONT without inuring them, I shall send them forward to their comrades. 1 CONT There are also a few of the Hessians yet abroad among the farmers, 1 CONT but not may. These I collect and send away as fast as I can; but 1 CONT those at the Laboratory, at Carlisle, and at other distant public 1 CONT useful works, I have suffered to remain. Occasional glimpses 1 CONT of it are obtained, in old English literature, extending up to the 1 CONT twelfth century, but an unbroken lineage cannot be traced back of the 1 CONT period of Charles II. In the Middle Ages, men frequently received 1 CONT their names from the places where they lived. One Sir 1 CONT Richard-at-the-Lee figures conspicuously in the ballads of Robin 1 CONT Hood, where he is represented as saying (1): An hondreth wynter 1 CONT here before, Myne aunsetters knyghtes have be. Sir Richard's 1 CONT parents lived at the Lee, and the name of the locality was adopted as 1 CONT the surname of the family. As the language was modified by time, the 1 CONT name became Atte Lee, At Lea, and finally AtLee or Atlee. Sir 1 CONT Richard was a fast friend of Robin Hood, who died in 1247. On a 1 CONT certain occasion, so the ancient ballad informs us, the famous archer 1 CONT befriended Sir Richard in the depths of the forest, when the latter 1 CONT was in trouble. Some time afterward, Robin, being closely pursued by 1 CONT the Sheriff of Nottingham, came with his men upon-A fayre castell, A 1 CONT lytell within the wode Double dyched it was about, And wall-ed by 1 CONT the road; And there dwelled that gentyll knyght, Syr Rychard at the 1 CONT Lee That Robyn had lent his good, Under the grene wode tree. Sir 1 CONT Richard opened the gates of his castle to the outlaw and his men, and 1 CONT entertained them until the sheriff, who sought in vain to gain 1 CONT admittance, was forced to return to London. The latter was then 1 CONT ordered, by the king, to repair with all speed to the castle and 1 CONT capture the knight who had so boldly defied him, and the ballad goes 1 CONT on to say that the sheriff Awayted that gentyll knyght, Syr Rychard 1 CONT at the Lee; As he went on haukynge by the ryver syde, And let his 1 CONT haukes flee. At length the knight was surprised, captured and 1 CONT carried off to Nottingham. Then the lady, the knyghtes wyfe, A 1 CONT fayre lady and fre, She set her on a gode palfray, To grene wode 1 CONT anon rode she. Robin Hood, on hearing her story, hastened to 1 CONT Nottingham, and beheaded the sheriff. Soon after, the king, with a 1 CONT few of his chosen knights, proceeded to Nottingham town, where he 1 CONT claimed to all assembled that He that wolde smyte of the knyghtes 1 CONT hede And brynge it to me, he shall have the knyghtes londes, Syr 1 CONT Rycharde at the Le. The poet then narrates how the king disguised 1 CONT himself as a friar, and, with a few trusty comrades, rode into the 1 CONT greenwood and there met Robin and his merry men. After the two had 1 CONT tested each other's skill in archery and wrestling, the outlaw 1 CONT suddenly recognized his royal guest, and thereupon, we are told, 1 CONT Robyn behelde our comly kynge Wystly in the face, So dyde Syr 1 CONT Rycharde at the Le, And kneled down in that place. The story 1 CONT then concludes by showing how the entire party returned to 1 CONT Nottingham, how a grand feast was held, in honor of the gentle knight 1 CONT and Robin Hood, and how the king restored to Sir Richard his lands, 1 CONT and a good man he bad hym be. In another ballad Queen Katharine is 1 CONT made to exclaim: Come hither to mea, Sir Richard Lee, Thou art a 1 CONT knight full good; For I do know by thy pedigree Thou sprung'st 1 CONT from Gower's Blood. (2) The Richard Lee here mentioned, or 1 CONT Richard Atte Lee, as the name is given in some versions, was most 1 CONT probably a descendant of Robin Hood's friend. Edward III, who 1 CONT ascended the throne in 1327 (or possibly his son, the Black Prince), 1 CONT gave a pension of D40 per annum to Sir John Atte Lee, who had been 1 CONT invested with knight-hood (3) (in auxilium status sui manutendi), to 1 CONT assist in maintaining his dignity. This was probably the father of 1 CONT Sir Walter at Lee, of the lordship of Lee, in the Parish of 1 CONT Wibonbury, County of Chester, lord of the Manor of Mulsham, Essex, in 1 CONT 1381, who left issue Sir John at Lee, of Lee Hall, Knight, to whom 1 CONT succeded John Lee (the first to drop the prefix), and to him Thomas, 1 CONT father of John Lee, of Lee Hall, Esq. Maj. Gen. Charles Lee, of the 1 CONT Continental army, son of Gen. John Lee, of Cheshire, England, 1 CONT descended for this branch. The Fordhook estate, which belonged to 1 CONT the Atlee family for many generations, lies in the Parish of Acton, a 1 CONT short distance out of London. Although protions of the dwelling-house 1 CONT have been modernized within the past century or so, the original 1 CONT drawing-room, which was wainscoted in oak, in the year 1500, by 1 CONT William Atlee, remains unaltered. Another William Atlee, who died in 1 CONT 1699, without issue, by his will, dated 1695, devised the property to 1 CONT his wife (Elizabeth Bonfoy (4)) after the decease of his mother, 1 CONT Susan Atlee, who held a life interest in the buildings and orchard, 1 CONT by virtue of a provision of the will of her late husband, John Atlee, 1 CONT gentleman. William Atlee's mother after married a Mr. Walker, and by 1 CONT some mismanagement the estate passed out of the family. Then a 1 CONT Mistress Hildyard came into posession, without buying, and she, in 1 CONT turn, made it over to a Mrs. Crowcher for an annuity during her life. 1 CONT In Lysons' Environs of London, Henry Fielding, the novelist, resided 1 CONT at Fordhook House (on the main road, near Acton) till his departure 1 CONT for Lisbon, June 26th, 1754. In the same book it is asserted that 1 CONT Fordhood (Capt. G. Tyrrel, R.N.), once the residence of Fielding, the 1 CONT novelist, is a good mansion at the W. extremity of the vill. (Acton); 1 CONT from the W. side of it a series of country lanes and field paths (the 1 CONT pleasantest stroll out of Acton) leads to Twyford Abbey. Lady Byron, 1 CONT wife of the illustrius poet, also lived at Fordhook, it is said, and 1 CONT in the old drawing-room her daughter, Ada Augusta, was married, July 1 CONT 8th, 1835, to Lord King, Earl of Lovelace. When Dr. Walter F. Atlee 1 CONT visited the place, in the year 1851, Colonel Tyrrel (mentioned above 1 CONT by Thorne) held possession. In Weever's Antient Funeral Monuments 1 CONT it is stated that One William Atte Lee, Esquire, lies buried in St. 1 CONT Mary's Church, in the abbey yard, in the Diocese of Norwich, in the 1 CONT County of Suffolk, one of the most antient churches in England.
