It was translated from the original Swedish by a Swedish exchange student attending Gustavus Aldolphus 2 CONT College in Saint Peter, Minnisota during the school year of 1995-1996. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE "Jonas Petter Nilson Nyqvist was born on the 8th of February 1834 in Hummerstad, in Kristdala parish, in Smaland. His parents were the tenant Nils Petter Jonsson and his wife Kristina Jonsdotter. J.P. Nyqvist's mother died when he was only 2 CONT eight or nine years old. He and his younger brother were then brought up by a stepmother. 1 NOTE The family moved to Boarum after while, where the father continued to be a tenant. Jonas Petter helped his father until his 18th birthday, upon which he wanted to earn his own living. He moved to a farm nearby and worked there for a year, and 2 CONT then he returned to his father. During this time, Jonas Petter became interested in studying. Since there was a preparatory school for schoolteachers nearby he went there to earn his first education. An old teacher, Johannes Nilsson, ruled 2 CONT this school, aided by Reverend Dahlsten. Both of them were Jonas Petter's teachers. No one knows for how long Jonas Petter attended this school, but after awhile he was found in Reverend Ahlberg's school. Jonas Petter has said at this school 2 CONT is where he found peace with God. Because of his conversion experience, Jonas Petter wanted to study more intensely and to serve God and his church in one way or another. 1 NOTE Jonas Petter decided to become a school teacher and enrolled in the Kalmar School Teacher Training College on the 2nd of February, 1957. He was very poor at this time. He lived in a very poor women's house and mostly ate herring and potatoes. 2 CONT During the time Jonas Petter's father had been a tenent, he had always taken loans from Colonel Weidenhjelm's farms. Because of this preestablished relationship, Mrs. Emili Weidenhjelm gave Jonas Petter 50 crowns during his first study 2 CONT period. Jonas Petter often called her his second mother. 1 NOTE Jonas Petter finished his course of study at Kalmar on 17th of December 1857 and shortly afterwar became a department head in the ambulatory school in Hogsby's parish. Then was a tutor at the assistant vicar Llunell, but went back to Reverend 2 CONT Ahlberg's school to continue his religious training. After completing his training, Jonas Petter accepted a teaching position at Elgshult's parish. On his journey to Elgshult's, Jonas Petter met his old instructor Reverend Ahlberg, who then 2 CONT asked Jonas Petter to become a teaching assistant at Ahlberg's school. Jonas Petter accepted the position and now was a teacher where he once was a pupil. 1 NOTE During his time as teacher at Reverend Ahlberg's school, he traveled a lot during the winter and summer holidays. One summer, Jonas Petter even traveled to Norrland. There is a diary note among his papers in which Jonas Petter describes a 2 CONT journey to a school teacher's meeting in Stockholm during 1861. The whole journey was a sermon journey. He often talked two to three times a day. In his notes there are a lot of expressions such as 'it was not easy to talk there', 'there 2 CONT were a lot of friends', 'there were a lot of opposers there', 'it was a peaceful home." 1 NOTE During the atumn of 1863, Jonas Petter is found at the Fjellstedska school in Upsalla. He does not say in his notes why he changed his original plan and started training to be a priest. Reverend Alhberg probably influenced him. During this 2 CONT time, Jonas Petter began to be called Nyqvist. Nyqvist kept a diary this time, but only comments on what he does in school and not his inner development. The reason for this was probably because the school's principal had the right to search 2 CONT through students' diaries. 1 NOTE During Nyqvist's first Christmas holiday, he visited East Wahla where Professor Esbjorn lived. There Nyqvist also met Dr. Lindstrom, and they both participated in a missionary meeting that professor Esbjorn had arranged. The meeting was 2 CONT attended by a large crowd. 1 NOTE During his other holidays, Nyqvist traveled around and gave sermons. The summer of 1865 he visited his home and Ahlsborg. The summer of 1867 was spent in Tolfta and Wesslanda parishes, and the year after that he went to Gotland. 1 NOTE On his return from Gotland on July 1st, 1867, Nyqvist received his summons to America. The summons was from Reverend Svensson, the secretary of the Augustana Synod. On July 18th, 1867, Nyqvist left the school. In Oskarshamn he met his 2 CONT betrothed, Reverend Ahlberg's youngest sister, Emeli Amalia. Nyqvist remarks in his diary, 'Denna skilsmessa var den svaraste af alla vid afresan fran fosterjorden. ' (This parting was the hardest of them all at the departure from the native 2 CONT soil.) 1 NOTE Some excerpts of his diary tell us what happened to him. On the 11th of August he started the long journey to America. He went from Ahlsborg to Goteborg where he sailed away on the 15th and arrived in New York on the 29th of August. On the 2 CONT 4th of September he arrived in Chicago, Illinois, and on the 5th of September he arrived in Paxton, Illinois, and on the 13th of September he gave his first American sermon on the 'Ten Lepers." On the 26th of January, 1868, he received an 2 CONT invitation to Bailytown, Illinois to go there and hold sermons. On the 18th of September of that same year, his bethrothed and half-sister arrived. There simple wedding was held on the 24th of September. The priest was Reverend E. Carlson 2 CONT from Chicago. 1 NOTE From this point on, Nyqvist's diary does not tell us very much. He probably did not have much time to write. After a year's stay in Bailytown, Nyqvist moved to a congregragation of Salem in Chicago. He had a difficult time here. A certain 2 CONT Mr. Denne was chosen to help the Reverend minister to the congregation. Instead, Mr. Denne became the opposer. Due to the conflicts, Nyqvist resigned on the 29th of October, 1875. He did not move though until the next summer. Nyqvist's 2 CONT "farewell sermon" is kept with his posthumous papers. The sermon is very touching. 1 NOTE The trouble maker was finally put to an end. One day he was found in a bar together with many other drunkards. Because of that he quickly moved from Chicago, although no one knew where. Sometime after this incident, his family moved as well. 2 CONT People said he may have purchased a bar or restaurunt in New York. 1 NOTE After moving from Chicago, Nyqvist worked for a couple of weeks as the Illinois conference's traveling preacher in Michigan, but in the fall of 1876 he became president of the new school in Saint Peter, Minnisota. He worked there for five 2 CONT years. 1 NOTE Of course there was dissatisfaction with the new school. Nyqvist naturally became the target of this dissatisfaction. The first students who came to the school were not a good element according to the professors at the time. Some were not 2 CONT Christians and some were very rude. One was expelled from the school due to drinking, another due to theft. Some women were accepted into the school as an experiment. Due to some behavior that one or two of them had, there was almost an 2 CONT regulation mandating that no women be accepted into school in the future. Along with acting as a president and professor, Nyqvist also vistited different congregations and gave sermons in the neighborhood of the school. 1 NOTE At the school, Nyqvist earned the respect and trust of both the students and his collegues. His time in Saint Peter wasn't without battles or sadness, however, he had his calmest period of his ministry here. Due to the place, development, and 2 CONT future potential of the school, Nyqvist's collegues were of a different opinion of him. Nyqvist resigned from his post after five years. 1 NOTE The following year he worked as a help priest for the president of the synod. He found a lot of friends from Sweden in Andover and enjoyed working in the congregation. He did not stop writing though. At the synodal meeting in Altona, he 2 CONT requested to go to the Swedes in Saunders County, Nebraska. There were three congregations that were vacant who did not have chance in securing a preacher. Nyqvist and his wife moved to Nebraska on August 6th, 1882, and he began to hold 2 CONT sermons in Edenburg's church. 1 NOTE Shortly after his arrival in Nebraska, the people started to talk about getting a new school. Luther Academy, among others, has Nyqvist to thank for its existence. He was president of the school's board of trustees for the first year, and 2 CONT board member for the whole time. The work was hard and Nyqvist was becoming tired. 1 NOTE He became worried about the future wellbeing of his family if he died. His wife during the whole period in the United States was extremely homesick. Nyqvist wrote about this. Nyqvist received a letter from his brother-in-law, Reverend 2 CONT Ahlberg, in 1878, who was in Sweden at the time. He proposed Nyqvist go home and begin a new school. He planned to travel but his correspondence was interrupted by Nyqvist's terminal illness. 1 NOTE During the cold New Year's Eve of 1886, Nyqvist caught a severe cold which spread to his lower abdomen, eventually developing into cancer. Nyqvist was weakened the following months, but gained strength in the spring. On Ascension Day, Nyqvist 2 CONT held his last sermon. Nyqvist had wanted to attend Nebraska's first conference meeting but could not due to his health. During Sunday, the Holy Communion was held. Nyqvist could not attend but celebrated it with his wife and oldest daughter. 2 CONT His dear friend and former teacher, Reverend G. Peters, helped him. This was Nyqvist's last communion on earth. 1 NOTE The following Tuesday, with help from the Reverends J.E. Nordling and F.N. Swamberg, Nyqvist was transported to Augustana Hospital in Chicago. The doctors were first optimistic about Nyqvist's prognosis, but after discovering the extent of the 2 CONT cancer in his lower abdomen, they knew it was terminal. They did not tell Nyqvist about the disease for they feared the news would hasten his death. Nyqvist had often feared that he had cancer. 1 NOTE Nyqvist wrote letters during his last days. His wife received the news that he had cancer about a week after he was admitted into the hospital. She tried to get to the hosiptal as quickly as she could on the next train, but her and her 2 CONT youngest daughter, Adele, arrived ten minutes after Nyqvist had died. 1 NOTE Nyqvist's former congregation did whatever it could to comfort the widow and her family. On September 24, Mrs. Nyqvist went back to Nebraska. The corpse was transported to Luther Academy where it was laid to rest on Sunday, September 26th. 2 CONT The funeral was held at Edenberg's church. Many people from far awar were there." 1 REM Scaled down version of Jonas Petter Nilson Nyqvist's biography found in the 1912 edition of Gustavus Aldolphus's annual, the BREIDABLICK. 1 REM 1 REM "Rev. Ahlberg who looked upon him as his future successor. But instead he accepted the call of the Augustana Synod, and was ordained in Moline, Illinois, in 2 CONT 1869. For some time he served as the editor of the synodical organ, 'Missionaren', and pastor at the same time. When nobody else could be secured, he accepted the call to became the first school president in St. Peter in 1876, resigning 1881. 2 CONT He now served as a minister, suffering from poor health, until his death which occurred in Chicago on September 22, 1886." 1 HIST The biography found under Miscellaneous Notes has been collected from a variety of sources through the institutional archives of Gustavus Adolphus College during the 1995-1996 school year. Wykes: 1 NOTE 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Palo Altan Alfred Werry Dies at 106 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Palo Alto's oldest living native, Alfred Ernest Werry, relished his memories, stuck to his routines and lived to see more than a century pass before his death on Presidents Day at the age of 106. 1 NOTE His sharp wit and generosity became a mainstay of the town he saw from a handful of houses to a city of modern proportions. 1 NOTE In his later years, schoolchildren visited him, historians questioned him and Werry reminisced for them all, sharing his remembrances with language that spoke of another time. 1 NOTE "I've had a peach of life," he told a reporter two years ago. The 1906 earthquake, he said, "knocked the pudding" out of the Palo Alto High School. And the people on the street where he grew up, he recalled, were like family. "Whether you 2 CONT liked them or not," he said, "they were a big part of your life." 1 NOTE For years, Werry was known to 'most everyone in town. He kept open his business, Werry Electric, until he was 90. The days after retirement were filled with walks, television, and talks with his family, which came to include four 2 CONT grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Their most often heard refrain: "Tell us a story, Grandpa." 1 NOTE The end had to come sometime, his family knew. On Feb. 20, Werry died. "I just want to go to sleep," he told his daughters. 1 NOTE The youngest child of five, born to an English stonemason who came to help build Stanford University, Werry dropped out of high school and into Cogswell Polytechnic, a vocational school in San Francisco. After his graduation in 1909, he worked 2 CONT as an electrician's apprecentice and two years later, he opened up his own business. 1 NOTE At first, he rode to jobs on a bicycle, but later purchased one of the first Model-T Fords to appear on Palo Alto's streets. 1 NOTE He married Frederica Howe in 1915. It was marriage that lasted until her death in 1964. 1 NOTE His son, Al Jr., joined him at Werry Electric in the 1950's. One move toward progress that Al Jr. made was to replace the old-fashioned cash register-one that rang up sales of no more than $9.99. 1 NOTE One things that never changed was Werry's reputation for honesty. Werry, an old friend said, was the only man he would ever trust with his house key. Werry was known to extend credit for someone who needed something but could pay right away. 1 NOTE He was a loving father, said his children, but strict. "My father never let us go to San Francisco until after we graduated from high school," said his daughter, Kathryn Childress. 1 NOTE Werry, a Mason and Rotarian, was an active member of the First Methodist Church and the Palo Alto Historical Society. 1 NOTE He kept to the same ways he had followed year after year. Some years were punctuated with special events, like his 100th birthday celebration, which included 135 family members and a birthday mention by Willard Scott on the NBC "Today" show. 2 CONT He was honored last year dring the Palo Alto centennial, and was an honorary chairman of the Palo Alto Centennial Committee. 1 NOTE The secret to his longevity may have been his diet. Because he was a picky eater, his daily routine followed a simple gustatory standard that rarely varied: a breakfast of peeled canned apricots and Honeycomb cereal washed down with tea and 2 CONT apple juice; a lunch of crackers and peanut butter, tea and cookies; and a dinner of baked potato, buttered toast, sliced tomatoes and fruit-filled gelatin. He would never eat olives and it took great persuasion to get him to finally try an 2 CONT avocado. 1 NOTE He shaved every morning and always came down fully dressed in a suit and tie. "He was vain," said his daughter Ellen. 1 NOTE Daughter Kathryn Childress attributed his long life to his gusto. "He loved people," she said, "and he loved working." 1 REM 1.
