2 CONT 	Yarmouth Port-  Thomas J. Brown, 50, formerly of Brockton, died in
2 CONT Cape Cod Hospital Tuesday after a long illness.  He was the husband of
2 CONT Sallyanne (Shanks) Brown.
2 CONT 	Mr. Brown was born in Brockton, and educated in Brockton schools.  He
2 CONT moved to the Cape in 1971, where he owned and operated A-1 Auto Sales
2 CONT in Hyannis.  He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War and was
2 CONT a member of the Boxer Detachment, Marine Corps League in Brockton.  He
2 CONT was a communicant of St. Pius X Church.
2 CONT 	Besides his wife he is survived by a son, Steven E. Brown of Yarmouth
2 CONT Port, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Brown, and several aunts and
2 CONT uncles.
2 CONT 	The funeral will be held at 10:15 a.m. Thursday from the Hallett Funeral
2 CONT Home, 283 Station Ave., South Yarmouth, followed by a funeral Mass at
2 CONT 11 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Station Avenue, South Yarmouth.  Burial will
2 CONT be in the VA national Cemetery, Bourne, at 1 p.m. Thursday.

1 NOTE Thomas Edward Brown.  He was born June 19, 1904, at 19 Torrey Street
2 CONT in Brockton.  He was a very quiet person. (I'm told his father was very
2 CONT quiet as well) His birth certificate shows his middle name to be Samuel,
2 CONT although according to my grandmother it was really Wilbur.  He took the
2 CONT middle name of Edward when he converted to Catholicism prior to his
2 CONT marriage to Mary Williams (b. 22 June, 1909)  He worked for more than
2 CONT 40 years at the Barbour Welt.  He even lost four of his fingers training a
2 CONT man on a cutting machine there.  I'm told that he instructed the man
2 CONT "don't turn on that switch"  The man did not her the word "don't" and
2 CONT turned on the machine.  He married my grandmother on 4 September,
2 CONT 1932, and my father was born a year later on 21 June, 1933.  He was
2 CONT their only child.    In 1970, my grandfather had an aneurysm in his heart.
2 CONT At the time, heart bypass surgery was very risky, and usually fatal.  The
2 CONT doctor recommended some medicine, saying it would buy him "two or
2 CONT three years".  He made a liar out of the doctor, and lived until 22 October
2 CONT 1985!  I'm pleased to say my grandfather was a likable man.  He seemed
2 CONT to get along with everyone.

2 CONT Brockton-  Thomas E. Brown, 81, husband of Mary E. (Williams) Brown,
2 CONT died Tuesday morning at Cardinal Cushing General Hospital after a
2 CONT lengthy illness.
2 CONT 	Born and educated in Brockton, he was a son of the late Joseph and
2 CONT Georgina (Ross) Brown.  He was a communicant of St. Edward's Church
2 CONT and a former member of the Holy Name Society.
2 CONT 	Prior to his retirement, Mr. Brown had been employed in the receiving
2 CONT department of the Barbour Welting Co. for 43 years.
2 CONT 	Mr. and Mrs. Brown celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary on Sept.
2 CONT 4, of this year.
2 CONT 	In addition to his wife, he is survived by a grandson, Steven E. Brown of
2 CONT Weymouth; a daughter-in-law, Sallyanne Brown of Yarmouth Port; a
2 CONT brother, Frank Brown of New Paltz, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. Edwin (Hazel)
2 CONT Rumsey of Brockton; four sisters-in-law, Margaret Hallett of Stoughton
2 CONT and Mrs. John (Patricia) Lincoln, Mrs. Louis (Therese) Katona and
2 CONT Christine Engel of Brockton, and several nieces and nephews.  He was the
2 CONT father of the late Thomas Joseph Brown of Yarmouth Port.
2 CONT 	The funeral will be at 8 a.m. Friday from the J. Frank Conley Funeral
2 CONT Home, 138 Belmont St., followed by a funeral Mass at 9 a.m.  in St.
2 CONT Edward's Church.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

2 CONT morning at his home, 63 School street.  Death was sudden due to a heart
2 CONT condition.  He was born in Stoughton, son of Charles and Ellen (Murray)
2 CONT Williams.  He was educated in the public schools here and always made
2 CONT Stoughton his home.  As a young man, he married Julia A Cotter of this
2 CONT town.  He had been employed for many years as traffic manager with the
2 CONT Springdale Finishing Co. in Canton, where he was held in the highest
2 CONT regard.  He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception church.
2 CONT 	He is survived by his wife, five daughters:  Mrs. Charles (sic) Brown of
2 CONT Brockton, Mrs Robert Hallett of Stoughton, Mrs. Donald Engel and Mrs.
2 CONT John Lincoln, both of Brockton, and Miss Theresa (sic) Williams of

2 CONT Frederick J. Williams of 63 School street, was held from her late home
2 CONT Wednesday morning, followed by a solemn requiem high mass in the
2 CONT Immaculate Conception church, of which she was a member.  The pastor,
2 CONT Rev. William W. Gunn, was the celebrant, Rev. John J. Skalandis was
2 CONT deacon and a visiting priest was sub-deacon.  There was such a profusion
2 CONT of flowers which required a flower car to carry them to the grave in Holy
2 CONT Sepulchre cemetery where prayers were offered by Fr. Gunn and Fr.
2 CONT Skalandis.  Bearers were John and Thomas Meere, Lloyd Marron, G. Austin
2 CONT Connell, Lyman Pents and James O'Donnell.

2 CONT 70 Years, after being ill only a short time.  He was one of the oldest
2 CONT members of Harmony Lodge, K. of P., and a member of the Presbyterian
2 CONT church.
2 CONT 	He was born in Nova Scotia, a son of the late Samuel and Catherine
2 CONT (MacMillan) Brown.  He lived in the U.S.A. 53 years and in this city all of
2 CONT that time.  He was employed at the Barbour Welting Co. and was a welter
2 CONT by trade.
2 CONT 	Mr. Brown leaves, besides his wife, Georgeanna, five sons, Duncan,
2 CONT Samuel, Thomas, and John, all of this city and Frank in New York, two
2 CONT daughters, Mrs. Hazel Rumsey of this city and Mrs. Bessie Goldberg of
2 CONT New York:  four brothers, Archibald Brown of this city, Duncan of
2 CONT Whitman, John of Halifax, Mass,. and Thomas of Nova Scotia;  three
2 CONT sisters, Mrs. Bessie Macintosh of Nova Scotia, Mrs. Emily Moore of
2 CONT Newark, N.J., and Mrs. Jeanette MacQuarry of California and three
2 CONT grandchildren.
2 CONT 	Funeral services will be held Monday at 2:30 at his residence, Rev. John

1 NOTE 	Filling the home, many relatives and friends attended the funeral of
2 CONT Joseph Brown, held from his residence, 53 Clarence street, Monday.  Rev.
2 CONT John R. Ralph of the First Presbyterian church officiated.  Sunday evening
2 CONT special services were conducted at the home of Harmony Lodge, K. of P.
2 CONT The Ritualistic service was under direction of Chancellor Commander
2 CONT Morris Thompson and the speaking parts were taken by Frank Capello and
2 CONT Lorimer Cassidy.  A number of Pythians from Montello Lodge, K, of P.,
2 CONT also attended under the leadership of Chancellor Commander Horace Hill.
2 CONT Floral offerings required an extra conveyance to transfer them to the
2 CONT cemetery.  Acting as bearers were the sons and son-in-law of Mr. Brown,
2 CONT Duncan Brown, John Brown, Frank Brown, Thomas Brown and Samuel
2 CONT Brown and Edwin Rumsey.
1 NOTE He became a U.S. Citizen on 11 November, 1898.  His naturalization
2 CONT papers say that he came to this country on 19 April, 1887, at the age of
2 CONT seventeen .  When he filed his intentions for naturalization, he was living
2 CONT at 38 Lawrence Street in Brockton, and his occupation was a teamster.
2 CONT He had two men, James E. Handrahan of 103 Pearl Street and David G
2 CONT Lindsey of 19 Winthrop Street as witnesses at the final hearing on his
2 CONT application for citizenship.
1 NOTE Joseph Brown was born in Wallace, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia on
2 CONT February 14, 1870.  He was the third child born to Samuel Brown and
2 CONT Catherine McMillan Brown.  On April 19, 1887, Joseph Brown arrived in
2 CONT Brockton, Massachusetts, and got work as an ice teamster (hauling big
2 CONT blocks of ice on his back)  He applied for citizenship at the Police Court
2 CONT of Brockton, and was granted citizenship on November 11, 1898.  Joseph
2 CONT Brown eventually went to work for the Barbour Welt, and word has it, the
2 CONT Barbour's took kindly to him, since one of the Barbour's often wound up
2 CONT sleeping on the couch at 53 Clarence Street after a night out on the town.
2 CONT I'm told Joseph Brown never retired, and worked up until the time of his
2 CONT death on March 15, 1940.

2 CONT Mrs. Joseph Brown Dies in 93rd Year.
2 CONT Mrs. Georgina (Ross)Brown, oldest member of United Prespyterian
2 CONT Church, died at Brocton Hospital Wednesday, where she had been a
2 CONT patient for the past five weeks.  The deceased, 92, enjoyed good health
2 CONT and had been active until an accident at her home, 53 Clarence St.,
2 CONT caused her hospitalization.
2 CONT 	Mrs. Brown was born in West River Station, Nova Scotia, daughter of the
2 CONT late thomas and Johannah (Bailey) Ross and was widow of Joseph Brown.
2 CONT A resident here for the past 70 years, she also was an active member of
2 CONT Montello WCTU.
2 CONT 	Her survivors include four sons, Duncan R. Brown, Thomas E. Brown,
2 CONT Samuel J. Brown, all of this city; Frank P. Brown of Lima, Peru;  two
2 CONT daughters, Mrs. F.P. (Bessie) Goldberg of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mrs. Edwin
2 CONT (Hazel) Rumsey of Brockton;  a brother, Kenneth M. Ross of Nova Scotia;
2 CONT nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
2 CONT 	Funeral service Saturday at 1 P.M. will be in the Sampson Funeral Home,
2 CONT 309 Main St., with Dr. Cecil Rose of United Presbyterian Church
2 CONT officiating.  Interment will follow at Coweeset Cemetery.
1 NOTE Georgina Ross married Joseph Brown on July 4, 1890.  Georgina Ross was
2 CONT born in West River Station(New Lairg), Pictou County, Nova Scotia on
2 CONT December 11, 1871.  She has been described to me as a warm,
2 CONT kind-hearted person. Georgina Ross was the daughter of Thomas Ross and
2 CONT Johanna Baillie.  Her father was a stern farmer, who supposedly had no
2 CONT use for his daughters, and made it quite clear that his sons would inherit
2 CONT the farm, and that the girls would get nothing.  She  answered an ad
2 CONT looking for a governess in New York City, and took the job.  She worked
2 CONT for a doctor and his wife, with two children.  The wife was an alcoholic.
2 CONT Georgina became cook and nursemaid.  I'm not sure how Georgina got to
2 CONT Brockton, or how she met Joseph Brown, but they did.  They had eleven
2 CONT children.  They lived in various places around Brockton, including 38
2 CONT Lawrence Street, 19 Torrey Street, 121 East Ashland, Street, 607 North
2 CONT Montello Street, and in 1919 they moved into a home at 53 Clarence
2 CONT Street.

2 CONT Joanna Brown, child of Joseph and Georgianna Brown died yesterday at
2 CONT the home, 19 Torrey Street.  She was 5 years of age.  The funeral will be
2 CONT held tomrrow at 2 o'clock at the residence.

2 CONT Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock over the
2 CONT remains of Joanna, child of Joseph and Georgianna Brown at the
2 CONT Residence 19 Torrey Street.  Rev. George Boice Titus of the First Baptist
2 CONT Church officiated.  The interment was in Coweeset Cemetery.
1 NOTE From Death Certificate:  Cause of death; Catarrhal Pneumonia
1 NOTE Johanna Brown was called "Josie".  She was born on 3 April, 1900, but
2 CONT died just five years later of pneumonia on 14 May, 1905.  She was also
2 CONT buried in the Coweeset Cemetery, although I'm not sure if she is in the
2 CONT family plot, or elsewhere.  Cemetery records do not go back that far,
2 CONT however there is no mention of her on the family headstone.

1 NOTE Bessie Brown was born on 18, December, 1894 and lived most of her life
2 CONT in New York City, and Brooklyn.  She was a nurse. I can only remember
2 CONT Bessie in her later years.  She had been living with her oldest son, Bill
2 CONT Goldberg out in Ohio.  Around 1977 he dropped dead of a heart attack, and
2 CONT his family was going to move to California (I think)  Bessie decided to
2 CONT return to Brockton, and live with her sister, Hazel.  Hazel and Bessie got
2 CONT a two bedroom apartment, and lived there for a couple of years, until
2 CONT both got so bad, they had to be put in a nursing home (they both went to
2 CONT the same nursing home)  Bessie died on 26 April, 1983.  By the way, she
2 CONT had another son named Charles but he was always known as "Chummy".
2 CONT Few in the family have heard from him since his mother died.  He was
2 CONT lives in Somerset New Jersey.  Bessie was cremated, and I am told her
2 CONT ashes were buried in the Brown Family plot in the Coweeset Cemetery in
2 CONT Brockton, however no marker is there.

2 CONT According to his obituary, his mother died around 1843, when he was
2 CONT nine years old.  He and his father (and possibly his step-mother and aunt)
2 CONT came to this country around 1847, the third year of the Irish potato
2 CONT famine.  They settled in the town of South Dedham, Massachusetts, which
2 CONT is now known as Norwood.  At the age of 20, Patrick Cotter Jr. moved to
2 CONT nearby Stoughton, Massachusetts, where he lived for the remainder of his
2 CONT life, although he shows up in the 1870 Federal Census living in So.
2 CONT Dedham.  Just six months before his 30th birthday, on December 26,
2 CONT 1863, Patrick Cotter Jr. volunteered for the Union army as part of the
2 CONT Stoughton quota.  He was assigned to the Fouth regiment of Cavalry,
2 CONT Company A, which was organized at Readville, Massachusetts.  On March
2 CONT 20, 1864, according to the Compendium of the War of the Rebellion, his
2 CONT company sailed from Boston for Hilton Head, South Carolina on board the
2 CONT steamer "Western Metropolis".  He arrived in South Carolina on April 1,
2 CONT whereupon his company was placed on picket and outpost duty until June.
2 CONT The regiment was mustered out November 14, 1865, and Patrick Cotter,
2 CONT along with the rest of the regiment, was discharged November 26th of
2 CONT that year.
2 CONT At the age of 38, Patrick Cotter Jr. married Mary A. Sludden, on July 22,
2 CONT 1872 in South Dedham.  Mary was not quite 24 years old at the time they
2 CONT were married. (based on Mary Sludden Cotter's death record, Stoughton
2 CONT town hall) According to the 1900 U.S. Census, Patrick and Mary Cotter
2 CONT had eight children, however only six were living at the time of the
2 CONT survey, June 15, 1900.  Their first was Mary Ann Cotter, who was born
2 CONT May 13, 1873.  She died just two years, later on June 13, 1875 of
2 CONT Tubercular Meningitis.  Alice Cotter was born March 21, 1875. Then Mary
2 CONT Lizzy Cotter was born November 19, 1876 (She died at the age of 18 on
2 CONT March 4, 1895.)  Margaret (Mag) Cotter was born November 24, 1878.  A
2 CONT son, Patrick H. Cotter was born July 25, 1880.  Sarah A. Cotter (Nason)
2 CONT was born June 30, 1882.  Another son, James T. Cotter was born July 22,
2 CONT 1883, and their youngest child, Julia Agnes Cotter (Williams) was born
2 CONT May 26, 1888.
2 CONT By 1900, Patrick Cotter Junior was retired, and earning a pension.  His
2 CONT Civil War pension was $27 a month. In August of 1904, he joined Post 72,
2 CONT G.A.R.  On October 1, 1914, Patrick Cotter Jr. died at the age of 80 years,
2 CONT 3 months, and 25 days.  His death record indicates the cause of death
2 CONT was Chronic Interstitial Nephritis.  He was buried in the Holy Sepulchre
2 CONT Cemetery in Stoughton.  His widow, Mary, Died a little more than four
2 CONT years later at the age of 70 years, 5 months,and 6 days.  She died of
2 CONT chronic bronchitis.

1 NOTE 	The death of Patrick Cotter, aged 80, took place Friday.  He was born in
2 CONT Ireland, June 6, 1834, and was the son of Patrick and Alice (O'Connell)
2 CONT Cotter.  His mother died when he was about 9 years old, and when he was
2 CONT at the age of 13, his father brought him to this country, coming to South
2 CONT Dedham, now Norwood.  In December, 1854, he removed to this town,
2 CONT where he has since resided.  His father died in Norwood at the age of 90
2 CONT years.
2 CONT 	During the civil war, he enlisted in the Stoughton quota, on December
2 CONT 26, 1863, in Co. A, 4th Mass. Cavalry, and served until Nov. 14, 1865,
2 CONT when the war was over.  he joined Post 72, G.A.R., in August, 1904.  He
2 CONT leaves a widow, to whom he was married on July 22, 1872, two sons,
2 CONT Patrick H. of Milford and James T. of Stoughton, and four daughters,.  Mrs.

2 CONT 	Mrs. Mary A Cotter, Widow of Patrick Cotter, died at her home, 281
2 CONT Canton street , about 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon, aged 70 years.  She
2 CONT was born in Ireland, and coming to this country when a young woman,
2 CONT settled with her husband in this town, just fifty years ago, bringing up a
2 CONT large family of children.
2 CONT 	Mrs. Cotter was one of the finest types of woman, and had a great many
2 CONT friends in this town who will miss her and regret to learn of her death.
2 CONT She leaves two sons, Patrick and James Cotter;  and four daughters, Miss
2 CONT Alice Cotter, Mrs. Fred Williams, Misses Margaret and Sarah Cotter.
2 CONT 	The funeral services will be held from the Immaculate Conception
2 CONT Church, Saturday morning at 9 o'clock with a requiem high mass, Rev.

1 NOTE 	The funeral service of Mrs. Mary Cotter, widow of the late Patrick
2 CONT Cotter of Canton street was held from the Immaculate Conception church
2 CONT Saturday morning.  A High Mass of Requiem was sung, Rev. Father Stanton
2 CONT officiating.
2 CONT 	Mrs. Cotter leaves two sons Patrick H. and James T. also four daughters,
2 CONT Alice E, Margaret, Mrs. Fred Williams and Mrs Frank E. Nason to mourn her
2 CONT loss.  She was also the aunt of Private John Meere who is now in France.

1 NOTE 	The first reference to Patrick Cotter Sr. is in the book, "Abstracts of
2 CONT Births" Dedham Records, found at the Norwood public library.  It lists the
2 CONT birth of a daughter,  Margaret, on September 23, 1854, to Patrick and
2 CONT Mary Cotter.  It lists both Patrick's and Mary's place of birth as Ireland.
2 CONT Apparently, Patrick Cotter remarried after his first wife, Alice
2 CONT O'Connell Cotter died in Ireland around 1843. (See Patrick Cotter Jr.s
2 CONT death notice)  Patrick Sr.'s second wife was Mary Farrell.  It's not known
2 CONT if they married in Ireland, or in the U.S., however no marriage record is
2 CONT listed for them in the "Marriage Abstracts" of the Dedham Records.
2 CONT According to the "Death Abstracts" for Dedham, Mary Farrell Cotter died
2 CONT at the age of 30 of Bleeding at Lungs on February 1, 1856.  It lists her
2 CONT parents as Michael and Mary, and her place of birth as Ireland.
2 CONT 	The "Abstracts of Deaths" for Dedham has one other listing for Cotter.
2 CONT On November, 23, 1871, Margaret Cotter, age 70 died of typhoid fever.  It
2 CONT lists her place of birth as Ireland, and her parents as Patrick and
2 CONT Margaret.  This leads me to belive that the Margaret who died in 1871,
2 CONT and Patrick Cotter Sr., were siblings.  Margaret's estate papers also list
2 CONT Patrick as her brother.
2 CONT 	The next reference to Patrick Cotter Sr. comes in the Norwood
2 CONT Directory, 1876-1877.  Patrick Cotter, Laborer, lived in a house on Mylod
2 CONT Street.
2 CONT 	Apparently, sometime between 1876 and 1878, Patrick Cotter Sr. broke
2 CONT up housekeeping, and began receiving aid from the town.  In the
2 CONT 1878-1879 Norwood Town records, under the heading "Support of Poor"
2 CONT expenditures for Patrick Cotter are listed as follows:

2 CONT MacMillan Brown came to Canada on the Charles Humphrey out of Belfast,
2 CONT Ireland.
1 NOTE Catherine did visit the Brockton area during the early part of the 20th
2 CONT century.  (probably sometime between 1910 and 1920)  According to
2 CONT Grace Brown Eaton, "Grandma Brown" wanted to visit the boys, figuring it
2 CONT would be the only time she would see them all together (Joseph, Archie,
2 CONT Duncan and John were all living in the Brockton area;  Thomas remained
2 CONT in Canada, and it's unclear if Frank was alive at the time.)  According to
2 CONT Grace, Catherine spent time at the home of each of her sons.  She would
2 CONT spend some weekends at the home of her son Duncan Dewar Brown, and
2 CONT Duncan's second wife, Bessie Harrison Brown and his two children
2 CONT (Albert and Grace)  Grace says Catherine was afraid of Bessie and did not
2 CONT like her, but had to sleep with her during the visit.  Catherine fell out of
2 CONT bed one night because she kept way over on the edge of the bed.
1 NOTE Her husband Samuel Brown died while many of the children were still
2 CONT young.  She managed to keep the family farm going after he died.

1 NOTE 	Records indicate Richard Williams(who also went by the name Charles)
2 CONT was born February 11, 1840 in London, England.
2 CONT 	According to the 1900 federal Census, he came to the United States in
2 CONT 1880, although this is not correct, since he served in the Union Army
2 CONT during the Civil War.  Military records show he enlisted on February 15,
2 CONT 1864 in Company G of the 6th New York Heavy Artillery at Tarrytown,
2 CONT New York. His occupation at the time of his enlistment was butcher.His
2 CONT volunteer enlistment paper said he had blue eyes, light hair, and a fair
2 CONT complexion.  It listed his height as five feet, one and a half inches tall.
2 CONT He was discharged from the service at the rank of private, at Petersburg,
2 CONT Virginia on 18 May, 1865, by reason of special order dated 3 May, 1865.
2 CONT The records indicate (as does his obituary) that he was wounded in the
2 CONT left arm at Petersburg.
2 CONT 	After leaving the Army, Richard Williams lived for four years in New
2 CONT York City,  three years in Sing Sing ten years in Hingham, Massachusetts,
2 CONT before moving to Stoughton  where he lived until 1913 when he moved to
2 CONT the Chelsea Soldiers home.
2 CONT 	Apparently, after arriving in Hingham, Richard Married Alice Stoddard ,
2 CONT although no marriage certificate has yet to be found.  Alice Stoddard
2 CONT Williams was still alive when Richard went to Stoughton in the
2 CONT mid-1880s.  Around that time, he met Ellen Murray who was about 15
2 CONT years old.  Both were living in a home on Perry Street Avenue in
2 CONT Stoughton.
2 CONT 	 Based on a marriage certificate,  Charles Williams married Ellen
2 CONT Murray in Boston on April 2, 1885 by a Sumner U. Sherman.  The entry
2 CONT lists Charles' birthplace as England, and his age as 35.  It says his
2 CONT parents were William and Elizabeth Williams (no maiden name given for
2 CONT his mother.)  His occupation is listed as painter.  Ellen's birthplace is
2 CONT listed as Boston.  Her age at the time of marriage, 25.   Her parents are
2 CONT listed asJames and Ellen Murray (again no maiden name given for her
2 CONT mother).  According to the entry, it is Charles' second marriage, Ellen's
2 CONT first.
2 CONT 	A second marriage certificate  shows they were legally married again
2 CONT on 7 September, 1892.  This time, He was married under the name of
2 CONT Richard, and shows his age as 47.  Ellen's age is listed as 32, and lists
2 CONT her parents names as John and Annie.  One theory for the second wedding
2 CONT is to make legal the questionable first wedding back in 1885, which may
2 CONT have been invalid since Richard was still married to Alice Stoddard at
2 CONT the time.  The second wedding took place after Alice Stoddard's death.
2 CONT 	Charles and Ellen Williams gave birth to a daughter, Nellie {could she
2 CONT later be known as Lucy?}, on May 9, 1886 (Stoughton town records, 1886
2 CONT births)  The entry lists the parents as Charles R. and Nellie (Murray)
2 CONT Williams.  Charles birthplace listed as England, Ellen's as Boston.
2 CONT 	In 1888, Charles and Ellen Williams had a son, Frederick J. Williams,
2 CONT born in Stoughton on May 18 (Stoughton town records, 1888 births).
2 CONT              The 1890 Stoughton poll tax book shows that Charles R. Williams
2 CONT paid $2.00 poll tax.  No other property tax was paid.
2 CONT 	In 1891, Charles and Ellen Williams had another daughter, May Frances
2 CONT Williams, born in Stoughton, on March 15.(Stoughton town records, 1891

2 CONT Street.  Occupations range from "laborer" to "operative".  There are two
2 CONT items regarding Charles and Ellen Williams in the Stoughton Sentinel in
2 CONT 1897.  The first, on April 17, 1887, under the "Personals" column on page
2 CONT one, reads "Charles Williams has moved to the house on the corner of
2 CONT Pleasant and Prospect Streets."  The second item was also in the page
2 CONT one personals column, on September 4, 1897.  It reads, "Mrs. Charles
2 CONT Williams is entertaining her sister from New York."  The 1897 Poll tax
2 CONT lists 50 year old Charles Williams, laborer, as living on Pleasant Street.
2 CONT             The Stoughton birth register for 1898 shows Henry Williams was
2 CONT born October 6, 1898.  His parents are listed as Richard and Nellie

1 NOTE 	The funeral of Richard John Williams, who died at the Chelsea Soldiers'
2 CONT Home Friday, was held at his home 59 Pearl street place,  Tuesday
2 CONT afternoon.  Rev. Benjamin G. Seaboyer officiated.   The G.A.R. services
2 CONT were also carried out.  Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.
2 CONT 	He was born in London, Eng., Feb 11, 1840, and came to this country
2 CONT when young.  He served in Co. G, 6th regiment, New york Artillery, being
2 CONT fastened into service Feb. 15, 1864, from Tarrytown, N.Y., and mustered
2 CONT out at petersburg, Va., May 18, 1865.  He was in the battles of the
2 CONT Wilderness, Cold Harbor and Petersburg, and was wounded in the arm at
2 CONT the last mentioned.  He came to Stoughton about 35 years ago and joined
2 CONT Post 72, G.A.R. July 7, 1891, and joined Command 26 U.V.U  He went to
2 CONT the Soldiers Home March 25, 1913, while his family resided here.

2 CONT Saturday evening after a brief illness.  The daughter of the late Patrick
2 CONT and Mary (Sloan) Cotter, she was born in Stoughton Nov. 24, 1878.	
2 CONT 	She was educated in St. Mary's and Stoughton high school; was a
2 CONT member of the Ladies Sodality of Immaculate Conception church.  She had
2 CONT been employed as a stitcher by Shawmut wollen Mills until her

1 NOTE Patrick H. Cotter Killed by Train
2 CONT Funeral services were held this (Thursday) morning in the Church of the
2 CONT Immaculate Conception for Patrick H. Cotter, 281 Canton Street, who
2 CONT was struck and killed by the gasoline train leaving Stoughton station at
2 CONT 7:04 o'clock Monday evening.
2 CONT 	A requiem high mass was sung at 9 o'clock
2 CONT 	The accident occured near the Greb factory within sight of his own
2 CONT home, a little over a quarter of a mile north of the Stoughton depot.
2 CONT 	The train was stopped and the crew took the body to the Canton
2 CONT Junction depot, where medical aid was called.  Stoughton and Canton
2 CONT police were called, as was Medical Examiner Joseph F. Golden.
2 CONT 	The train was operated by Engineer William H. Wilmot, 127 Brown
2 CONT street, Fall River, and Jack Wright of Lowell was the conductor.  Mr.
2 CONT Cotter is said to have been walking on the east side of the northbound
2 CONT track when the accident occurred.
2 CONT 	Mr. Cotter, who was employed as an upholsterer in Boston, was born in
2 CONT Stoughton, July 25, 1880, a son of Patrick and Mary A. (Sloane) Cotter,
2 CONT both natives of Ireland.  He was an industrious and respected citizen of
2 CONT the town.  He is survived by three sisters, Miss Alice Cotter, Miss
2 CONT Margaret Cotter and Mrs. Fred Williams, and one brother, James T. Cotter
2 CONT of Clifford avenue.

1 NOTE According to Mary E. (Williams) Brown.... Jim Cotter did not tell his
2 CONT mother that he married Jennie Clifford.  They got married shortly before
2 CONT Mary (Sludden) Cotter died in 1919.  Mary Cotter's will bequeathed
2 CONT $50.00 to all married children, with the rest to be divided evenly
2 CONT between the single children.  Since she was unaware of Jim's Marriage,
2 CONT the will was not changed so he shared in the division of the estate.

1 NOTE Archie Brown, 84 Veteran Ice Man, Taken by Death
1 NOTE 	Archie Brown, 84, of 61 Bartlett street, veteran retired employee of
2 CONT the Brockton Ice & Coal Co., died Satureday at home after being in failing
2 CONT health the past few years.  On July 29, Mr. and Mrs. Brown observed their
2 CONT 57th wedding anniversary.  Mrs. Brown, who survives him, is the former
2 CONT Eliza Jane Bland.
2 CONT 	Mr. Brown was born in Cumbering, Wallace county (sic), Nova Scotia,
2 CONT April 23, 1872.  He started employment with what is now the Brockton
2 CONT Ice & Coal Co. on Oct. 17, 1891, having been hired by Walter Flagg, who
2 CONT owned the business at that time.  He was Brockton's senior ice man,
2 CONT having spent 62 years in that capacity, and later was head of the
2 CONT maintenance department until his retirement a few years ago.
2 CONT 	Mr. Brown was beloved by all the employees at the plant, and was
2 CONT affectionately known as "Pop."  He taught and helped most of his
2 CONT associates when they started their employment and continued a friend
2 CONT throughout the years.
2 CONT 	Mr. Brown always contended that the ice business lost much of its
2 CONT appeal to the ice man with the replacement of horses by trucks..  He
2 CONT missed the horses, having been an excellent handler of horses,  and he
2 CONT always had charge of the breaking and training of green horses purchased
2 CONT by the company.  He also won many ribbons and prizes with horses he
2 CONT drove.
2 CONT 	Horse cars were running on Main street and the railroad grade crossing
2 CONT had not been abolished when Mr. Brown began service with the company.
2 CONT Later, when the street railway was started, both Mr. Brown and Angus
2 CONT Beaton, drove horses hauling poles and rails from Campello to thir
2 CONT locations, going as far as Randolph.  Mr. Brown often told of commuting
2 CONT between Brockton and Randolph when some of the poles and rails were
2 CONT shipped into Randolph.  They obtained one of the old horse cars.  Each
2 CONT morning, they would hitch the horses onto it, draw it from the company
2 CONT lot on Lawrence Streetand get it onto the rails on Main street and ride to
2 CONT Randolph.
2 CONT 	At night upon their return to Lawrence street they would put a lock
2 CONT under the front wheel of the car causing it to jump the track and then
2 CONT draw it back to the company lot ready for the next trip.
2 CONT 	Mr. Brown also cut ice in Factory Village pond and the Avon Reservoir.
2 CONT 	Mr. Brown was a member of the United Presbyterian church.  He was
2 CONT devoted to his home and family, having few outside interests.
2 CONT 	Besides his widow, Mr. Brown is survived by three sons, C. Aubrey and
2 CONT Archie J., both of Brockton and Kenneth G. of San Diego, Cal.; five
2 CONT daughters, Mrs. Walter (Marguerite) Ross of Elizabeth, N.J., Mrs. Merle
2 CONT (Dorothy) Munroe of Easton, Mrs. Joseph H. (Helen) Marshall, Mrs. Norman
2 CONT (Mildred) Porter and Miss Lillian A. Brown, all of Brockton;  three
2 CONT brothers, Duncan and John of Whitman and Thomas of Nova Scotia; two
2 CONT sisters, Mrs. Bessie MacIntosh of Nova Scotia and Mrs. Emily Moore of
2 CONT New York; also 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
2 CONT 	Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 in the
2 CONT funeral home, 81 Green street.  Interment will be in Melrose Cemetery.

2 CONT 	Born in Nova Scotia, he was a resident of Whitman for 26 years, coming
2 CONT here from Halfiax, Mass.  A farmer for most of his life, he also worked at
2 CONT the Former Regal Shoe factory until his retirement several years ago.  He
2 CONT and his widow recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.
2 CONT 	Besides his widow, he is survivied by two sons, John E. of Whitman and
2 CONT E. Stuart of Evansville, Ill; a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Marie) Dunbar of
2 CONT Whitman:  12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

1 NOTE Hazel Brown was born on 13 September, 1896.  She was a nice lady.  You
2 CONT could look like you had been dragged through the mud, and Hazel would
2 CONT say you "look like a million dollars." and really mean it.  The way she said
2 CONT it, you did feel like a million dollars.  Hazel worked for many years at
2 CONT the W.L. Douglas shoe factory in Brockton.  She said she was the first
2 CONT woman skiver (a special type of leather cutter) in the city.  She used to
2 CONT tell how the men in the factory at first resented her, but later grew to
2 CONT respect her, and would often turn to her to salvage pieces of leather that
2 CONT they had ruined.   Hazel married a man in 1913 named Edwin Rumsey, but
2 CONT they never had any children.  Ed died on 29 April, 1961, so I only
2 CONT remember Hazel as a widow.  She and Ed had a house built next to the
2 CONT Brown family homestead on Clarence Street.  After Ed died, Hazel moved
2 CONT next door and looked after her mother.  I can vaguely remember going up
2 CONT to the house (53 Clarence Street) and visiting Hazel and Gramma Brown.
2 CONT Gramma Brown was quite elderly (although I'm told she painted the front
2 CONT porch of the house while she was in her 90's!)  Hazel sold the house (and
2 CONT unfortunately, was taken for a ride) in 1973.  She moved into an
2 CONT apartment complex on Oak Street, and later to the housing for the
2 CONT elderly.  She moved out of the elderly housing, and back to that Oak
2 CONT Street complex when Bessie returned to Brockton.  Hazel began slipping
2 CONT soon after she moved from Clarence Street, and it really became sad.
2 CONT After she moved to a nursing home, her mind really started to go, but
2 CONT physically, she was healthy as a horse!  She would often be the only one
2 CONT in the nursing home not to have a cold.  She finally died on 30 December,
2 CONT 1990.

1 NOTE Duncan Ross Brown was born on 9 September 1901, and appears to be the
2 CONT only one of the Brown's not born in Brockton (He was born in Newport,
2 CONT Rhode Island.  Why, I don't know.)  He was a life-long bachelor, who was
2 CONT for many years a foreman or something along those lines at the Barbour
2 CONT Welt.  Most of the Brown boys, as well as their father, worked at the
2 CONT Barbour Welt.  It is literally a stone's throw away from the house at 53
2 CONT Clarence Street.  The Brown's must have done a good job there because it
2 CONT is one of the few remaining shoe-related factories left in the city.
2 CONT Duncan was (as far as I could tell) rather a loner.  I think he lived with
2 CONT his mother most of his life, and then with Hazel.  He was a life member
2 CONT of the Elks, and proud of that.  He died on 4 March of 1979, and is also
2 CONT buried in the Brown Family plot in the Coweeset Cemetery.

1 NOTE John Heslip Brown was born in Brockton April 9, 1903.  I thought Heslip
2 CONT might be a family name but it turns out that was the last name of one of
2 CONT the Pastors at the church where Gramma Brown went.  Since John died
2 CONT before I was born, all I know about him has been told to me primarily by
2 CONT my grandfather and grandmother.  I did learn from Grace Eaton that John
2 CONT paid to have a stained glass window installed in the United Presbyterian
2 CONT Church where the family worshipped, and had it placed in such a way that
2 CONT his mother would always see it when she sat in church.  Grace tells me
2 CONT that when they sold the church (the neighborhood became drug infested)
2 CONT they moved the window to another church in nearby Hanson.  I haven't
2 CONT gone to see it yet, but I am planning on it.  I think, based on the stories I
2 CONT have been told, John was a generous, kind-hearted man.  I am told that
2 CONT onetime that generosity got him into some trouble.  He picked up a
2 CONT soldier who was hitchhiking.  The soldier hit him over the head and stole
2 CONT his car(and you thought carjackings were new to the 1990's!)  He owned a
2 CONT shoe store, but somehow lost it (I don't know how).  I guess the Brown's
2 CONT were surprised when he got married to Ruth Hunter (He was about 50).
2 CONT They all thought he'd be a life long bachelor like Duncan.  John and Ruth
2 CONT had twin girls on 26 March, 1953.  From what I understand, there were
2 CONT some hard feelings between some of the Brown's and Ruth, and there was
2 CONT a complete falling out after John died.   He died on 17 February, 1957,
2 CONT and is also buried in the family plot in the Coweeset Cemetery in
2 CONT Brockton.

2 CONT May.  He was operated on for Acute appendicitis on 25 May.  He developed
2 CONT an acute intestinal obstruction  and was operated on again (Enterostomy

1 NOTE George Irving Brown was born on 26 April, 1909.  He died at the age of 30
2 CONT on 30 May, 1939.  From what I am told, he left work (from the Barbour
2 CONT Welt, of course) just before Memorial Day. His appendix burst, and he had
2 CONT an appendectomy.  An infection set in, and he died a few days later.  My
2 CONT grandmother tells me that my grandfather never forgave the doctor.  It
2 CONT seems the doctor left to go watch the Memorial Day Parade.  When he
2 CONT returned, George had died.  My grandfather figured if the doctor had
2 CONT stayed, George would have survived.  George is also buried in the Family
2 CONT plot.

1 NOTE 	George Irving Brown, 53 Clarence street, died at a local hospital

1 NOTE The youngest of the Browns is Frank Perry Brown.  He was born on 13
2 CONT October, 1910.   He is living in a nursing home in upstate New York.
2 CONT Frank was one of the first people I ever knew to have Parkinson's
2 CONT Disease.  Apparently, in his youth, Frank was an excellent athlete.  He
2 CONT was scouted by many professional teams, but for some reason, never
2 CONT became a professional.  (I know baseball was one sport, I think Football
2 CONT was the other)  A couple of years ago, I was playing golf at the D.W. Field
2 CONT Golf Course in Brockton when I met up with an old-timer.  I mentioned
2 CONT my name, and inquired if he was aware of my family.  He didn't know my
2 CONT father or grandfather, but he did remember Frank, and remembered he
2 CONT was a standout athlete. He married Phyllis Skeels (b. 5 September, 1924)
2 CONT They got married in the Panama Canal Zone on 23 October, 1943. Frank
2 CONT was a globetrotter.   He spent much of his time in Europe, and also in
2 CONT South America.  Two of their three children were born abroad. They
2 CONT finally settled in New Paltz, New York, after living up in Maine for a
2 CONT couple of years.  Their son Peter(b. 6 February 1949) lives near his
2 CONT parents in New York.  Their daughter, Georgina "Bunny" Brown(b. 23
2 CONT November, 1945) met a man in Lima, and still lives there today with
2 CONT their 3 kids.  Frank and Phyllis's youngest son George Brown(b. 11 March,
2 CONT 1955) was deaf, and was killed on 5 July, 1991.  I don't know all the
2 CONT details.

2 CONT outside to pay their last respects to their departed friend.  The floral
2 CONT tributes were many and beautiful.  Favorite hymns of the family, "Abide
2 CONT With Me!" and "Nearer My God To Thee!" were sung.
2 CONT The remains were laid to rest in Cut Knife Cemetery with the impressive
2 CONT service of the Oddfellows Lodge recited by Hodd Dunn and Gordon Laing.

2 CONT Neil Ross was born in Ross Shire, Scotland around 1800.  He died March
2 CONT 20th, 1893.  He came to Nova Scotia in the early part of the 1800's and
2 CONT settled in The Grant, (now known as Lansdowne).  He married Georginia
2 CONT MacLeod (other sources indicate MacDonald), who was born 1802, died on
2 CONT March 1st, 1862.  They bought land from Donald Baillie in Gairloch (This
2 CONT section now known as Ross Hill in the West River Station area).  There he
2 CONT built and lived in a log cabin, the cellar of which is still visable.  They
2 CONT are both buried in the Pioneer Cemetery on the Old Stewiacke Road in
2 CONT Lansdowne.

2 CONT Goddard Memorial Hospital.  He was the husband of Margart B. (Williams)
2 CONT Hallett.
2 CONT 	He was born and educated in Canton and was graduated from Canton High
2 CONT School in 1932.  He was well known in Canton as an athlete, and in
2 CONT Stoughton he played and coached the Stoughton Trojans, a semi-pro
2 CONT football club.  He was a former member of the Stoughton Knights of
2 CONT Columbus and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
2 CONT 	Mr. Hallett was employed for many years as an electronics engineer by
2 CONT the Automatic Radio Company of Boston and retired 11 years ago.
2 CONT 	Besides his widow, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. Louie (Mary) Ugo of
2 CONT Stoughton;  a son, M-Sgt. Joseph W. Hallett of Hudson; three brothers,
2 CONT Walter of Marshfield, Gerald of Wrentham, and Joseph of North Easton;
2 CONT two sisters, Mrs Rita Phelps of Stevens Point, Wisc., and Mrs. Corinne
2 CONT Laffee of Long Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren.
2 CONT 	Funeral will be held Friday morning at 8:15 from the Farley Funeral
2 CONT Home, 358 Park St., (Rte 27) Stoughton, followed by a Funeral Mass in the
2 CONT Immaculate Conception Church at 9 a.m.  Interment will be in Holy

2 CONT Lincoln, died unexpectedly at Cardinal Cushing General Hospital Friday
2 CONT morning.
2 CONT 	Mr. Lincoln was born in Stoughton, son the the late Charles and Ida
2 CONT (Peterson) Lincoln, and had been a resident of Brocton for the past 40
2 CONT years.  He was a retired self-employed carpenter.  Mr. Lincoln  was a
2 CONT veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in
2 CONT the Pacific Theatre.
2 CONT 	Mr. Lincoln was well known in square dance circles in this area where
2 CONT he and his wife were active for many years, and were on the staff of
2 CONT Square Acres in East Bridgewater.  Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln celebrated their
2 CONT 42nd wedding anniversary last September.  We was a communicant of Our
2 CONT Lady of Lourdes Church.
2 CONT 	Besides his wife, Mr. Lincoln is survived by two sons, John S. of Norton,
2 CONT and Gerald M. of Mansfield; a daughter,  Mrs. Frederick (Judith A.) Reagan
2 CONT of Brockton; a daughter-in-law, Patricia F. (Ragucci) Lincoln of
2 CONT Mansfield; four grandchildren, Kevin, Kelli, and Koleen Reagan of
2 CONT Brockton and Hilary Lincoln of Norton(sic);  three brothers, Chester,
2 CONT Andrew and Warren Lincoln; two sisters, Evelyn Holbrook and Tilda
2 CONT Durkee;  four sisters-in-law, Mary E. Brown, Margaret B. Hallett, Theresa
2 CONT A. Katona, and Christine F. Engel, and several nieces and nephews.
2 CONT 	The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday from the J. Frank Conley Funeral
2 CONT Home, 138 Belmont St., Brockton, followed at 11 by a funeral Mass in Our
2 CONT Lady of Lourdes Church.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

2 CONT 	For most of his professional career, he was employed as a
2 CONT hydrolic-sanitation engineer for the Badger Company in Cambridge.  He
2 CONT was also a senior lecturer for many years in civil engineering at
2 CONT Northeastern University in Boston.
2 CONT 	After professional retirement he was employed by the Brockton Credit
2 CONT Union.  He was also a member of the American Society of Engineers.
2 CONT 	In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Kathleen T. Peck of
2 CONT Brockton; a brother, Alex Katona; and several nieces and nephews.
2 CONT 	Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the J. Frank

2 CONT 	Born in Brockton, he was the son of Mrs. Archie (Eliza Bland) Brown and
2 CONT the late Archie Brown, Sr.  He was a life long resident of this city, and a
2 CONT veteran of World War II; serving in the Pacific Theatre.
2 CONT 	He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Brockton,
2 CONT and a former executive of the Windram Manufacturing Co., of South
2 CONT Boston.
2 CONT 	In addition to his widow, he is survived by a daughter, Roberta Brown;
2 CONT his mother Mrs. Archie (Eliza Bland) Brown, Sr.; all of Brockton; two
2 CONT brothers, Kenneth Brown of Beaverton, Ore. and C. Aubrey Brown of

2 CONT 	Mr. Cotter was a retired knitter and had worked at Shawmut Mills in
2 CONT Stoughton and Garland Mills in Brockton.
2 CONT 	He is survived by three brothers, James J. Cotter of New Jersey, Leo E.
2 CONT Cotter of Stoughton, and Gerald W. Cotter of Brockton;  two sisters,
2 CONT Regina A. Connolly and Marie C. Cotter of Stoughton;  Two aunts, Hannah
2 CONT O'Reilly of Weymouth, and Lena Clifford of Ireland, and several nieces
2 CONT and nephews.
2 CONT 	The funeral will be at 8:15 a.m. Thursday from the Farley Funeral Home,

1 NOTE Stoughton-  John P. Meere, died Wednesday at Norfolk Medical Centre at
2 CONT the age of 69 after a long illness.  Born in Providence, R.I. tho son of the
2 CONT late John and Alice (Sloane) Meere, he came to this town as a young boy
2 CONT and lived here for 64 years.
2 CONT 	Educated in the local schools, he served in World War I.  A retired
2 CONT knitter, he was employed for many years at the Shawmut Woolen Mills.  A
2 CONT member and past Grand Knight of San Salvador Council, K of C, and past
2 CONT commander of Michael Romanuck Post, VFW, he was also active in many
2 CONT bowling leagues.
2 CONT 	He leaves a brother, Michael Thomas Meere of Brockton, several nieces
2 CONT and nephews.
2 CONT 	Funeral Service will be from the James B. Cotter Funeral Home, 39
2 CONT Grove St.,  Saturday at 8 a.m., followed by a Solemn Funeral Mass in
2 CONT Immaculate Conception Church at 9 o'clock.  Interment will be in Holy
2 CONT Sepulchre Cemetery.
