2 CONT   Earl L. Lacy, 42, of Kansas City, KS and a former resident of Independence,
2 CONT KS, died at 12:50 PM, Monday at the University of Kansas Medical Center in
2 CONT Kansas City, KS where he had been a patient since May 7th.
2 CONT   Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Thursday at the Potts Chapel with the
2 CONT Rev. Jerry Grieves of the Church of the Breathern officiating. Interment will be
2 CONT at Elk Falls Cemetery. Friends may call at the Potts Chapel-Schmidt Funeral
2 CONT Chapel after 5 PM today.
2 CONT   Earl Leonard Lacy was born Dec 20, 1942 in Sedan, KS, the son of
2 CONT Virgil Ivan Lacy and Nellie Viola Sprague.
2 CONT   He attended school in Independence and served 2 years in the US Navy.
2 CONT Following his discharge from the Navy he returned to Independence and was
2 CONT employed with Electra Mfg Co, as an electrician and later with the Independence
2 CONT Bottling Company.
2 CONT   He later moved to Kansas City, Kansas where he had been working in the field
2 CONT of computers.
2 CONT   On Jan 20, 1961 in Independence, he was united in marriage to Alice Faye
2 CONT Campbell. Two children were born to this union. The couple later divorced.
2 CONT   Surviving are his two daughters, Debbie Cone of Bartlesville, OK and
2 CONT Annette Brandes of Topeka, KS, his mother, Nellie Viola Lacy of Independence,
2 CONT one grandson, Spencer Scott Cone of Bartlesville, OK, one brother, Dwayne
2 CONT Ivan Lacy of Moore, OK, one sister, Beulah Mae Williamson of Neosho, MO and
2 CONT and his former wife, Alice Faye Windle of Granite, OK, one niece,
2 CONT three nephews and many other friends and relatives. His father, Virgil Ivan
2 CONT Lacy, preceeded him in death in 1975.

2 CONT   A 43 year old man was critically wounded Tuesday afternoon at his home on the
2 CONT south side of KC, KS. Police said they found Earl L. Lacy in the back bedroom
2 CONT of the two-story house at 3812 Strong Ave abount 2 PM.
2 CONT   Mr. Lacy was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening at the University
2 CONT of Kansas Medical Center.
2 CONT   Police said Mr. Lacy had been shot once in the head with a small caliber
2 CONT handgun. Police were questioning a 60 year-old woman late Tuesday in connection
2 CONT with the shooting.
2 CONT   Police said they were unsure of the time and motive for the shooting.  We
2 CONT We haven't determined exactly what occurred. said Lt. Mike Dailey, a police
2 CONT spokesman. We're not sure if it was an attempted sucicide or a crime. Right
2 CONT now we're just considering it a shooting. A small handgun was recovered
2 CONT at the scene. Lt. Dailey said the investigation was continuing.

2 CONT   Three persons, including an Indep resident and 2 Coffeyville residents, were
2 CONT killed in a two vehicle accident which occurred at 2:10 AM Sunday on Highway
2 CONT 75 1.9 miles North of Copan, OK. Those pronounced dead on arrival at Jane
2 CONT Phillips Hospital in Bartlesville, OK were: Jerry L. Miller 31, of 1509 W.
2 CONT Laurel, Indep., an employee of Emerson Electric Co. and the driver of one of
2 CONT the vehicles. Clarence Edwards, 59, of Coffeyville, a former Indep resident and
2 CONT the driver of the other vehicle.
2 CONT   Funeral arrangements for Mr. Miller are pending with Webb & Rodrick Funeral
2 CONT Home. Miller was born Aug 17, 1946 at Long Beach, CA, the son of Harold C. and
2 CONT Esther (Heinze) Miller. A graduate of Indep High School, he served 12 years in
2 CONT the US Navy and was employed by Emerson Electric Co. at the time of his death.
2 CONT He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and the VFW. Survivors include a
2 CONT daughter, Lana Miller of Vinita, OK; the father, Harold C. Miller of Indep.,
2 CONT the mother, Esther Miller of Seal Beach, CA, a sister, Sally Henisey of
2 CONT Lawrence; and the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mamie Heiser of Independence.

2 CONT   Services for Jerry L. Miller, 31, will be held Wednesday at 2 PM in the Webb &
2 CONT Roderick Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Jackson, pastor of the Zion
2 CONT Lutheran Church, officiating.  Burial will be in the Lutheran Cemetery with
2 CONT military graveside rites.
2 CONT   Friends may call at the funeral home to register.
2 CONT   Mr. Miller died Sunday morning in an automobile accident on Highway 75 near
2 CONT Copan, OK.  He resided at 1509 West Laurel Street in Independence, KS.
2 CONT   Jerry is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Lutheran Section. (Northwest Section,
2 CONT Third Grave, Lot 2).  He was buried on Wednesday, February 14, 1979.

2 CONT he went with ease.  He knew some Karate.  He wanted to live like the natives
2 CONT in the places he went, and he respected their customs and religions. He learned
2 CONT to speak & write Japanese. At one time he practiced Buddhism. He was dedicated
2 CONT to the Navy during his years with the Military and was proud to serve. Jerry
2 CONT could be a very tender and loving person and was good with children.
2 CONT Jerry was very intelligent and could learn anything that he chose to.  He could
2 CONT also be a little devious at times, such as when he was angry with me after I
2 CONT had returned to Kansas from Japan, he wrote me a letter all in Japanese,
2 CONT knowing full well that I could not read it!  I did find a Japanese lady in
2 CONT Independence, but since she was from a different area of Japan than where he
2 CONT learned to read and write, she could not read the letter either, or else she
2 CONT chose not to.  He enjoyed reading and listening to music.

2 CONT Paul was a handsome man and was a lot of fun to be with.  He was always telling
2 CONT jokes and making everyone laugh.  We had been friends for a long time and I
2 CONT enjoyed his company.  He had been in the US Navy and had gotten out.  During
2 CONT that time he worked at the Cement Plant in Independence.  He and Delores had
2 CONT gotten divorced and they continued to have problems being in the same town, so
2 CONT Paul decided to join the Air Force.  One day before he was to leave for Thailand
2 CONT he was involved in an auto accident.  He was sent to Wichita to recover.  I was
2 CONT attending Junior College and we had dated off and on.  Jesse Ortiz, his
2 CONT x-brother-in-law called me and asked if I could go to Wichita to pick Paul up,
2 CONT as he was discharging from the hospital.  He stated that he had planned to go,
2 CONT but that he couldn't leave work. I said, sure I would be happy to.  I have
2 CONT always been a person that if I was needed by a friend I would always be there.
2 CONT I asked Vonda Wood, my friend if she would like to go also and she agreed.  It
2 CONT was raining really hard, but we made it there fine.  When we walked in, Paul was
2 CONT standing there in his uniform looking so very handsome.  The first thing out of
2 CONT his mouth was, " Alice will you marry me?"  My reaction was, "Oh, Hell yes,
2 CONT let's just find a Chaplain and get married.  Paul, you know I don't want to get
2 CONT married.  As soon as I graduate I will leave for Officers Candidate School in
2 CONT the Army.  The papers are ready to sign as soon as I graduate."
2 CONT Paul didn't say anymore, and Vonda & I went to the restroom before we left to
2 CONT come back to Independence.  She started in about I should really think about
2 CONT this as Paul was a nice guy and handsome.  We had quite a discussion and I kept
2 CONT saying NO.  We started home and it was still raining very hard.  Paul sat in
2 CONT the middle and kept looking at me in the rear view mirror.  He has really
2 CONT beautiful eyes and he kept talking all the way home about marriage.  Finally we
2 CONT reached Vonda's house and I was worn down.  I said we can't just go get
2 CONT married, and he said yes we can in Oklahoma.  I called Bartlesville and said,
2 CONT "There is no way we could get married tonight is there?" and they said no.
2 CONT Paul looked at Vonda and said, "If she doesn't marry me tonight she never will,
2 CONT please help me."  Vonda got on the phone and called Bartlesville again and set
2 CONT it up.  Tom, her husband walked in about that time and she told him we were
2 CONT getting married.  I don't remember the trip down there, the blood test or
2 CONT getting the license.  I do remember that there was some church service going on
2 CONT where we got married and they started playing the Wedding March and I told them
2 CONT please don't.  I don't remember the ceremony either, nor the ride home.  The
2 CONT next thing I remember is sitting in my living room and saying, "Oh, my God,
2 CONT what have I done?"  It wasn't that I didn't like Paul, because I did, but I
2 CONT didn't love him and I knew he was still in love with Delores.
2 CONT We moved to Wichita and he left for his tour overseas.  There was no money so I
2 CONT ended up coming back to Independence.  Finally the allotment checks started
2 CONT coming and we survived.  I won't go into all the details of while Paul was
2 CONT gone, because it's a long story.  We did write and his parents came to meet me.
2 CONT Paul sent me roses for my birthday.  I ended up moving to California and then
2 CONT joining the Army.  Then I got out and returned to Independence.  Paul came home
2 CONT and we moved to Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, MO.  We lived on base
2 CONT for a time and then bought a mobile home 12 X 65.  Then all 4 of Paul's
2 CONT children came to live with us along with my 2 that were already there.  I
2 CONT worked at the NCO Club as a Dishwasher and then ran the Package Store.  Times
2 CONT were hard, we had no air conditioning in the mobile home.  Tina, the oldest of
2 CONT Paul's children wanted her parents back together (which is understandable), so
2 CONT she tried us very hard.  Our marriage just was not meant to be, we both tried,
2 CONT but finally I decided to go back to Independence and I left in August of 1974.
2 CONT Paul came to Independence New Years of 1975 amd tried to talk me into coming
2 CONT back, but I said NO.  Then I took him some bunk beds up to MO for the kids and
2 CONT Tina cried the whole time I was there.  Finally I said, Paul, it just won't
2 CONT work.  We later divorced in June of 1975.  But, up until Paul remarried we
2 CONT called each other periodically to see how the other was doing.  He even came to
2 CONT Kiowa, KS to visit while I lived there.  I miss his calls as he is a really
2 CONT neat person, but most of all I hope he is happy.

2 CONT   Charles Joel Windle passed away at his home in Granite, Oklahoma on September
2 CONT 2, 1996.  He had been in ill health for some time.
2 CONT   Charles was born on November 22, 1937 in Elk City, Oklahoma to Harmon
2 CONT Douglas Windle and Jessie Emma Miller.  He was the second of five children born
2 CONT to Harmon and Jessie.
2 CONT   Charles served in the United State Army as a Paratrooper.  After receiving an
2 CONT honorable discharge from the Army, he went to work at the Oklahoma State
2 CONT Reformatory serving in numerous positions.  For the past 12 years, he had been
2 CONT a Farm Supervisor at the prison.  He had been employed at OSR for over 20 years
2 CONT and was looking forward to retirement.
2 CONT   On January 7, 1961, in Mangum, Oklahoma, he was united in marriage to Barbara
2 CONT Louise Aebischer.  Two children were born to this union; Danny Lee Windle and
2 CONT Mary Elizabeth Windle.  Charles and Barbara later divorced, but always remained
2 CONT friends.
2 CONT   On March 30, 1983, in Granite, Oklahoma, Charles was united in marriage to
2 CONT Alice Faye (Campbell) Lacy.  Although no children were born to this union, he
2 CONT gained two daughters through this marriage, Debbie Diane Lacy and Annette
2 CONT Yvonne Lacy.  All of our children were present for the wedding.  Charles and
2 CONT Alice divorced in 1992, and remained close friends until his death.
2 CONT   Charles was loved by everyone who knew him and will be remembered for his
2 CONT wonderful qualities.  His sense of humor, his laugh, his goal to always win at
2 CONT whatever he made up his mind to do.  He was always there to offer a helping
2 CONT hand to those in need.  I know that Charles never met a stranger.
2 CONT   He loved animals and was raised and worked on a dairy farm.  In his spare
2 CONT time he broke and trained horses.  Charles, Barbara, Danny and Liz spent many
2 CONT hours training their horses and riding in playdays.  They were all winners and
2 CONT won many trophies during those years.
2 CONT   Later when covered wagons became popular, Charles had to have one; that was
2 CONT back in 1983.  His first was driven with horses and then later came the mules.
2 CONT He made many trips across the country with a goup of other wagon train friends.
2 CONT He loved the camping out and sitting around the campfire at night swapping
2 CONT stories with old friends.
2 CONT   Charles found their was a great deal of difference in riding a horse and
2 CONT driving one.  There were many times when he would have a run away and those
2 CONT with him would bail out, but he hung right in there until he regained control
2 CONT again.  One time the horses didn't stop until they reached the top of a
2 CONT haystack!  Everyone would laugh and say, "there goes Charles again" as he flew
2 CONT past them in the ditch.
2 CONT   Charles' mother, Jessie, preceded him in death in 1985.  He leaves to mourn
2 CONT his passing, his parents, Harmon and Naomi (Johnson)(Uptergrove) Windle; His
2 CONT son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Leslie Windle and grandson, Joel of Granite;
2 CONT his daughter, Liz Jones, Brad Coalson and grandson, Scott Jones of Hobart; his
2 CONT daughters and son-in-law through marriage, Joel Scott Cone and Debbie Cone and
2 CONT grandchildren, Amber, Spencer, Colton, Chandler and Chelsea Cone of League
2 CONT City, TX; Annette Brandes and grandson, James Brandes of Granite; former
2 CONT wives, Barbara (Aebischer) Windle Uptergrove  of Stillwater, OK and Alice
2 CONT (Campbell) Windle of Granite. Brothers, Tom Windle and wife, Ula May of
2 CONT Bartlesville, OK; Bob Windle and wife, Linda of Broken Arrow, OK; Sisters, Beth
2 CONT Waugh and husband Ken of Buffalo, OK; and Kathy Wade and husband, Dennis of
2 CONT Granite.  Brothers and sisters gained through marriage, Chet and Alice
2 CONT Uptergrove of Granite, Bert and Wanda Sunderland of Granite, Gary and Barbara
2 CONT Uptergrove of Stillwater, and Dale and Connie Uptergrove of Madill, OK.  Aunts,
2 CONT Uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews and more friends than most of us could ever
2 CONT wish for.
2 CONT   We have all lost a good friend and loved one, and there will always be an
2 CONT empty place in our hearts that can never be filled.

2 CONT   Mr. Campbell was born on January 11, 1907 in this city.  He was the son of
2 CONT John and Laura Mae (Buster) Campbell. He had been a lifetime resident of
2 CONT Independence.
2 CONT   As a child he became a member of the First Christian Church.  He was also
2 CONT affiliated with the UAWCIO local at Coffeyville.  At one time he had been an
2 CONT employee of the Union Electric Company.
2 CONT   Survivors include, the widow, Nancy A. of the home, 1315 W. Locust, a
2 CONT daughter, Alice, also of the home, and a son, Jospeh C. Campbell of this city.
2 CONT   One grandchild, a foster brother, George House, of Independence, two (2)
2 CONT step-brothers Lester House, Independence., and Herschel House of California are
2 CONT also survivors.
2 CONT   Pallbearers at the Saturday service will be Charles Martin of Independence,

1 NOTE   A resident of Montgomery County since 1918, John Calvin McGuire, 77, died
2 CONT Sunday evening at 10:30 PM at his home, North of Jefferson, in Fawn Creek
2 CONT Township.  He had been ill about a month.
2 CONT   Funeral services will be held at 2:00  Tuesday afternoon at the Potts Funeral
2 CONT Chapel with the Rev. A. B. Colvin officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope
2 CONT Cemetery.
2 CONT   Mr. McGuire was born near Billings, MO on Dec 18,1879. He was the son of
2 CONT William J. and Frances (Medlin) McGuire.
2 CONT   In his youth the family moved to the Indian Territory. Mr. McGuire was
2 CONT preceded in death by his parents, two (2) sisters and two (2) brothers. Also, by
2 CONT his first wife, Meda Vineyard, who died in Feb 1921.
2 CONT   He was united in marriage to Laura May House on Oct 7, 1936. She died on
2 CONT March 20, 1956.
2 CONT   Survivors include 5 children, 2 sons, Earl & Fred McGuire of the home, Lloyd
2 CONT McGuire of Chicago, Mrs. Effie Gillman of Coffeyville and Mrs. Edna Earley of
2 CONT Henryetta, OK.  Three sisters, Mrs. Calvin Ford and Mrs. Claude Vineyard of
2 CONT Independence and Mrs. Claud Rains of Verona, MO and 3 brothers, Perry McGuire
2 CONT of Independence, Joe McGuire of Jefferson, and Willie McGuire of Newton, KS.
2 CONT   Also surviving are 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren and several
2 CONT nieces and nephews.

1 NOTE   The dead body of Steven W. Buster, a Drayman, was found this afternoon by the
2 CONT roadside just west of the MO Pacific tracks on the first road south of the
2 CONT Interurban Power House.
2 CONT   His death was caused by the discharge of a double barreled shotgun, the load
2 CONT from which penetrated his heart. The body was found by two small boys, Buster's
2 CONT nephew, Bert Buster and Clendon Gardner, who had gone to the pasture to get the
2 CONT former's pony.
2 CONT   When discovered, the body was lying face downward, the gun underneath. The
2 CONT boys turned the body over.  At first it was thought that Buster had committed
2 CONT suicide, but the location of the body, at the entrance to the pasture where he
2 CONT had been going daily to haul rubbish, and the futher fact that Buster was a man
2 CONT who had no trouble and was of a cheerful frame of mind, changed this idea to the
2 CONT belief that death was accidential. That in attempting to climb over the gate,
2 CONT Buster's gun was accidently discharged.
2 CONT   The body was taken to Jacksons Undertaking Rooms.  The accident happened
2 CONT about 2:00 and the body was found soon after.
2 CONT   Buster was 40 years of age and leaves a wife and 5 children, ranging in age
2 CONT from 5-12 years.
2 CONT   He drove a one-horse dray wagon as an occupation.  A brother, Robert Buster
2 CONT is employed at the Power House. Buster's home was at 508 South 18th St.
2 CONT   The gun with which Buster was shot was found to be clogged with dirt at the
2 CONT muzzle, leading to the belief that the accident happened while he was in the
2 CONT buggy, and that he fell out afterwards. His horse and wagon were found on the
2 CONT East side of the RR tracks.

2 CONT   Nancy Jane Buster 72, for the past 16 years, a resident of Tyro, KS and a
2 CONT former resident of this city died yesterday afternoon at her home in that city
2 CONT at 3:15. Mrs. Buster had been seriously ill for the past 3 months.
2 CONT   Mrs. Buster was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa on April 10, 1864. She was united in
2 CONT marriage to Stephen Buster and they were among the early settlers in this
2 CONT section. Mr. Buster passed away in this city in 1910.
2 CONT   Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 PM in Tyro at the
2 CONT Methodist Church with the Rev. J.R. held in charge.  Burial will be in the
2 CONT Mount Hope Cemetery under the direction of the Atwood Carinder Funeral Home
2 CONT of Caney.
2 CONT   The body will be taken from Caney to the home in Tyro, Friday afternoon where
2 CONT it will remain until the funeral hour.
2 CONT   Surviving are Mrs. J.C. McGuire of this city, Mrs. Wm Kincaid of Chetopa,
2 CONT Mrs. John Fields of Canton, KS and Mrs. Glenn Jordan of Matfield Green, KS, two
2 CONT sons, Schuyler of Tyro and Earl of Eureka. Twenty seven grandchildren, also
2 CONT survive.
2 CONT   Mrs. Buster had a great many friends in Independence and during her entire
2 CONT life she had been very active in the Methodist Church work.

2 CONT   The body of John Buster, a former  resident of Guide Rock, NE, was brought
2 CONT here for burial Tuesday evening. The funeral services were held from Wirt's
2 CONT Undertaking Rooms, Wednesday morning by the A.O.U.W., which organization also
2 CONT conducted the services at the grave.
1 NOTE   Mr. Buster was born in Alaska Co, KY (note: I believe they meant Pulaski Co,
2 CONT KY), 77 years ago. When he was 17 years of age, his father's family moved to
2 CONT MO. He homesteaded in Montgomery Co, KS in 1870. From there they moved to ILL
2 CONT in 1874, and came to Guide Rock, NE in the spring of 1884. He left Guide Rock
2 CONT in the fall of 1895, settling in Williamstown, Jefferson Co, KS. One year
2 CONT later he moved to Tyro, Montgomery Co, KS where he died.
2 CONT   Deceased was united in marriage in 1855 to Miss Asenath Shoemaker. To this
2 CONT union 8 children were born, 5 of whom survive him, as follows: John & Lewis of
2 CONT Tyro, J.R. and Mrs. Dickson (Dixon) of Independence, KS and Mrs. Johnson of
2 CONT Lawrence,KS.  all 5 of the children accompanied the body to Guide Rock, and the
2 CONT wife of the deceased, now a very elderly lady, but who stood the trip well.
2 CONT   Mr. Buster's last illness lasted about 2 years, but he had been confined to
2 CONT his bed only since last November.
2 CONT   He was one of the Charter Members of Guide Rock A.O.U.W. Lodge #49. The
2 CONT Signal joins with the many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved.
2 CONT   Resolutions of Respect:  Whereas: In His infinite wisdom, it has pleased
2 CONT the Supreme Master of the Universe to remove our beloved brother, John Buster,
2 CONT from our midst and Whereas: Our loss is his gain, therefore be it. Resolved:
2 CONT That the Charter of the Lodge #49 A.O.U.W. be draped for thirty days: a copy
2 CONT of these resolutions be sent to the bereaved family and the same be spread

2 CONT      JOHN S. BUSTER
1 NOTE   Was born August 29, 1838, in Pulaski County, KY.  He left that state when 18
2 CONT years old and went to Salene County, MO, where he remained 3 years and then
2 CONT located in Jasper County, MO.  Here he was married to Miss Asenath Shoemaker.
2 CONT The couple lived in Jasper County until the breaking out of the Civil War,
2 CONT when they moved to Douglas County, KS, where they lived until the war was over
2 CONT and then returned to Jasper County, MO again.
2 CONT   In 1870 they came to this county, (Montgomery Co, KS) but after a short time
2 CONT moved to Champaign County, ILL where they lived for 10 years.  They then lived
2 CONT 11 years in Nebraska and in 1895 settled in Tyro, Montgomery County, KS where
2 CONT they expect to live until summoned by the Master.
2 CONT   To Mr. & Mrs. Buster were born eight children, 5 boys and 3 girls.  One son
2 CONT and two daughters are dead.  They have 30 living grandchildren and 14
2 CONT great-grandchildren.
2 CONT   Mrs. Buster, while she is 72 years of age, is as spry as some women of 30 and
2 CONT does all her own work.  This couple have one of the most pleasant homes in
2 CONT Tyro, and are the old fashioned, jolly kind of people that drives away the
2 CONT blues from all comers.
2 CONT   Since living in Tyro, Mr. Buster has been Justice of the Peace for 2 years and
2 CONT was recently elected for two more years.  He was appointed Police Judge by the
2 CONT City Council last spring and his friendly advice toward litigents saves them
2 CONT much annoyance and expence.
2 CONT   While Mr. Buster has not been a resident perhaps as long as some others in
2 CONT Tyro, he is perhaps as well known as any person in this section.

1 NOTE   Ruth Ann Jennetta Buster was born on April 23,1864 in Leavenworth Co,KS. On
2 CONT May 6, 1883, she was married to Edwin Johnson at Oyers, Champaign Co, ILL. To
2 CONT this union were born 9 children; 3 sons and 6 daughters.
2 CONT   At the age of 16, she joined the Methodist Episcopal Church and was a faithful
2 CONT member for many years, but on Nov 19, 1921, she united with the Church of the
2 CONT Brethern at Lone Star, KS.
2 CONT   She and her husband had moved to Lone Star 36 years ago, where they lived at
2 CONT the time of Mrs. Johnson's death. She had been an active worker both in the
2 CONT church and community.
2 CONT   Surviving relatives include her husband, Edwin, 3 sons, Robert of Lone Star,
2 CONT KS; Edward of Persia, IA; and Trace Hunter of Lawrence; 6 daughters, Pearl of

2 CONT John Buster is Laid to Rest In Guide Rock Cemetery
2 CONT   John Thomas Buster, son of William H. & Margaret Jane Buster, was born June 4,
2 CONT 1864, near Carthage, MO and departed this life at his home in Burr Oak, KS on
2 CONT Dec 5, 1944, at the age of 80 years, 6 months & 1 day.
2 CONT   He came with his parents to Webster Co, NE at the age of 21 years & has lived
2 CONT most of his life since in southern NE & northern KS.
2 CONT   On Feb 10, 1890, he was united in marriage to Debroah Finney at Red Cloud, NE.
2 CONT To this union were born 6 children: Ethel Maude, who preceded her father in
2 CONT death when she was 3 months old; Edna Kivett of Haviland, Kiowa Co, KS; Mabel
2 CONT McMains of Burr Oak, Jewell Co, KS; Andy Oscar, who passed away at Camp
2 CONT Funston, a victim of influenza, October 7, 1918, while in service of his
2 CONT country in WW I; Rachel Jones of Knoxville, Marion Co, Iowa and Willis E.
2 CONT Buster of Mankato, Jewell Co, KS. All of the living children were with the
2 CONT father during his last illness.
2 CONT   John Buster was a hard working farmer until the fall of 1929, when they moved
2 CONT to Guide Rock, NE, where they lived until Oct 23, 1944, when they moved to Burr
2 CONT Oak, KS. While his last illness was of only a few months duration, he was a
2 CONT patient sufferer & seldom made complaints & was conscious to the end of life.
2 CONT   He was converted at the age of 21 years & joined the Methodist church. Later
2 CONT when he moved near Northbranch, he, with his family, united with the Friends
2 CONT Church at Northbranch, where his membership was at the time of his death.
2 CONT   He was always so thoughtful of others & was always ready to lend a helping
2 CONT hand to anyone needing help & was a good neighbor to those living near him.
2 CONT   He leaves to mourn his departure, his loving companion, 3 daughters, 1 son, 11
2 CONT grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers, Charles of Esbon, Jewell
2 CONT Co, KS; Harve of Burr Oak, Jewell Co, KS and Loren of Ankeny, Polk Co, Iowa and
2 CONT a host of other relative & friends.
2 CONT   Pall bearers were Alfred Fringer, Ed Stutesman & Milt Gleason of Guide Rock,
2 CONT NE; Ezra Glover, Will Dillon & Bob McMains of Burr Oak, Jewell Co, KS.

2 CONT   Charles Franklin Buster, son of William Harrison & Margaret Jane Buster, was
2 CONT born Sept 9, 1874, near Lawrence,KS.  He departed this life Oct 4, 1962, at the
2 CONT age of 88 years and 26 days.  He was one of nine (9) children.
2 CONT   He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ellen (Bessie) Mills on Oct 16, 1895,
2 CONT and to this union were born five (5) children.

2 CONT 3. Alta Mae Buster
2 CONT 4. Earl Russell Buster
2 CONT 5. Dorotha Pearl Buster
2 CONT   Preceding him in death were his wife and three (3) sons.
2 CONT   He was a member of the Northbranch, KS, Friends Church and upon moving to
2 CONT Esbon, KS, he and his wife joined the Evangelical United Brethren Church.
2 CONT   Being in Failing health, he spent the last three years in a nursing home.
2 CONT   "Our loss is his gain,  No more pain or sorrow, No worries to fret him, No
2 CONT cares to beset him, Calm and quietness now reigns."
2 CONT   He was interested in others and was a good neighbor and father.
2 CONT   He leaves to mourn his loss, two daughters, Mrs. Virgil J. Bailey of Dallas,
2 CONT TX and Mrs. Henry Gibbs of Esbon, KS; two sons-in-law, Virgil J. Bailey and
2 CONT Henry Gibbs; two brothers, Harve O. of Burr Oak, KS and Loren E. of Ankeny, IA;
2 CONT seven (7) grandchildren; sixteen (16) great grandchildren and numerous
2 CONT relatives and friends.
2 CONT   Rev. Loren Silsby of Republic, KS, conducted the service, assisted by Rev.
2 CONT Dewitt T. Miller of Esbon, KS.  Mr. Earl Silsby sang two numbers, "God
2 CONT Understands", and "Beyond the Sunset", accompanied by Mrs. Allene Davis.
2 CONT   Pallbearers were Dean Buster, Wilfred Buster, Paul Pritts, Vaden Buster,
2 CONT Willis Buster and Ernest Blattner.
2 CONT   Interment was in the Northbranch cemetery.

2 CONT   Deborah Isabelle Finney, daughter of Thomas & Rachel Finney was born 9 Jan
2 CONT 1868, in Illinois, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Virgil
2 CONT McMains, at Burr Oak, at the age of 83 years, 4 months & 26 days.
2 CONT   Deborah moved with her parents in early childhood, by covered wagon to Webster
2 CONT Co, NE, and spent most of her life in northern Kansas & southern Nebraska.
2 CONT  She was united in marriage to John T. Buster 10 Feb 1890 at Red Cloud, NE.
2 CONT  To this union 6 children were born. Two children preceded her in death, Ethel
2 CONT Maude passed away in babyhood, and Andy O. in 1918. Her husband, John, passed
2 CONT away in 1918. (Misprint, he died in Dec, 1944)aw
2 CONT   Mrs. Buster was the last of a family of 10 children.  She was a member of the
2 CONT Eckley Methodist Church, later moving near Northbranch. She, with her family
2 CONT joined the Friends Church where she held her membership at the time of her
2 CONT death.
2 CONT   She leaves 4 children, Edna of Haviland, KS; Mabel of Burr Oak, KS; Rachel of
2 CONT Pleasantville, Iowa, and Willis of Mankato, KS; 12 grandchildren and 17 great
2 CONT grandchildren, together with a host of relatives & friends.

2 CONT relatives and friends.
2 CONT   Pallbearers were Dean Buster, Wilfred Buster, Paul Pritts, Vaden Buster,

1 NOTE   John Robert Johnson, son of William and Anna Johnson, was born Feb 11, 1886
2 CONT at Guide Rock, Nebraska.  He passed away at his home southeast of Lone Star, KS
2 CONT on Jan 10, 1961 at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 30 days.
2 CONT   In the year, 1892 a terrible drought hit the state of Nebraska.  Within 3
2 CONT days the hot winds burned the crops to a crisp.  Heavy hearted and not knowing
2 CONT what to do or where to go, and with provisions running low, they loaded their
2 CONT few possessions, including a few head of livestock in their covered wagon, and
2 CONT headed East.  They stopped for the winter 1/2 mile north of the Riverside
2 CONT School house near Lawrence, KS on the place where Callery plant is now located.
2 CONT There his father found work, and instead of wages he received food for his
2 CONT family.  While there, Rob and his older sister started school at the Riverside
2 CONT School.
2 CONT   In February of the next year, they traded their horses for a track of land
2 CONT southeast of Lone Star and built a small cabin.  As Rob and his mother cleared
2 CONT the land, his father hauled wood to Lawrence to sell for provisions.
2 CONT   With love for one another and a great determination, they progressed each
2 CONT year.  God blessed this pioneer family with good health and strength, and in
2 CONT 1909 they built the present home.
