He was always telling 2 CONT jokes and making everyone laugh. We had been friends for a long time and I 2 CONT enjoyed his company. He had been in the US Navy and had gotten out. During 2 CONT that time he worked at the Cement Plant in Independence. He and Delores had 2 CONT gotten divorced and they continued to have problems being in the same town, so 2 CONT Paul decided to join the Air Force. One day before he was to leave for Thailand 2 CONT he was involved in an auto accident. He was sent to Wichita to recover. I was 2 CONT attending Junior College and we had dated off and on. Jesse Ortiz, his 2 CONT x-brother-in-law called me and asked if I could go to Wichita to pick Paul up, 2 CONT as he was discharging from the hospital. He stated that he had planned to go, 2 CONT but that he couldn't leave work. I said, sure I would be happy to. I have 2 CONT always been a person that if I was needed by a friend I would always be there. 2 CONT I asked Vonda Wood, my friend if she would like to go also and she agreed. It 2 CONT was raining really hard, but we made it there fine. When we walked in, Paul was 2 CONT standing there in his uniform looking so very handsome. The first thing out of 2 CONT his mouth was, " Alice will you marry me?" My reaction was, "Oh, Hell yes, 2 CONT let's just find a Chaplain and get married. Paul, you know I don't want to get 2 CONT married. As soon as I graduate I will leave for Officers Candidate School in 2 CONT the Army. The papers are ready to sign as soon as I graduate." 2 CONT Paul didn't say anymore, and Vonda & I went to the restroom before we left to 2 CONT come back to Independence. She started in about I should really think about 2 CONT this as Paul was a nice guy and handsome. We had quite a discussion and I kept 2 CONT saying NO. We started home and it was still raining very hard. Paul sat in 2 CONT the middle and kept looking at me in the rear view mirror. He has really 2 CONT beautiful eyes and he kept talking all the way home about marriage. Finally we 2 CONT reached Vonda's house and I was worn down. I said we can't just go get 2 CONT married, and he said yes we can in Oklahoma. I called Bartlesville and said, 2 CONT "There is no way we could get married tonight is there?" and they said no. 2 CONT Paul looked at Vonda and said, "If she doesn't marry me tonight she never will, 2 CONT please help me." Vonda got on the phone and called Bartlesville again and set 2 CONT it up. Tom, her husband walked in about that time and she told him we were 2 CONT getting married. I don't remember the trip down there, the blood test or 2 CONT getting the license. I do remember that there was some church service going on 2 CONT where we got married and they started playing the Wedding March and I told them 2 CONT please don't. I don't remember the ceremony either, nor the ride home. The 2 CONT next thing I remember is sitting in my living room and saying, "Oh, my God, 2 CONT what have I done?" It wasn't that I didn't like Paul, because I did, but I 2 CONT didn't love him and I knew he was still in love with Delores. 2 CONT We moved to Wichita and he left for his tour overseas. There was no money so I 2 CONT ended up coming back to Independence. Finally the allotment checks started 2 CONT coming and we survived. I won't go into all the details of while Paul was 2 CONT gone, because it's a long story. We did write and his parents came to meet me. 2 CONT Paul sent me roses for my birthday. I ended up moving to California and then 2 CONT joining the Army. Then I got out and returned to Independence. Paul came home 2 CONT and we moved to Whiteman Air Force Base in Knob Noster, MO. We lived on base 2 CONT for a time and then bought a mobile home 12 X 65. Then all 4 of Paul's 2 CONT children came to live with us along with my 2 that were already there. I 2 CONT worked at the NCO Club as a Dishwasher and then ran the Package Store. Times 2 CONT were hard, we had no air conditioning in the mobile home. Tina, the oldest of 2 CONT Paul's children wanted her parents back together (which is understandable), so 2 CONT she tried us very hard. Our marriage just was not meant to be, we both tried, 2 CONT but finally I decided to go back to Independence and I left in August of 1974. 2 CONT Paul came to Independence New Years of 1975 amd tried to talk me into coming 2 CONT back, but I said NO. Then I took him some bunk beds up to MO for the kids and 2 CONT Tina cried the whole time I was there. Finally I said, Paul, it just won't 2 CONT work. We later divorced in June of 1975. But, up until Paul remarried we 2 CONT called each other periodically to see how the other was doing. He even came to 2 CONT Kiowa, KS to visit while I lived there. Charles, Barbara, Danny and Liz spent many 2 CONT hours training their horses and riding in playdays. They were all winners and 2 CONT won many trophies during those years. 2 CONT Later when covered wagons became popular, Charles had to have one; that was 2 CONT back in 1983. His first was driven with horses and then later came the mules. 2 CONT He made many trips across the country with a group of other wagon train friends. 2 CONT He loved the camping out and sitting around the campfire at night swapping 2 CONT stories with old friends. 2 CONT Charles found their was a great deal of difference in riding a horse and 2 CONT driving one. There were many times when he would have a run away and those 2 CONT with him would bail out, but he hung right in there until he regained control 2 CONT again. One time the horses didn't stop until they reached the top of a 2 CONT haystack! Everyone would laugh and say, "there goes Charles again" as he flew 2 CONT past them in the ditch. 2 CONT Charles' mother, Jessie, preceded him in death in 1985. Buster, a Drayman, was found this afternoon by the 2 CONT roadside just west of the MO Pacific tracks on the first road south of the 2 CONT Interurban Power House. 2 CONT His death was caused by the discharge of a double barreled shotgun, the load 2 CONT from which penetrated his heart. The body was found by two small boys, Buster's 2 CONT nephew, Bert Buster and Clendon Gardner, who had gone to the pasture to get the 2 CONT former's pony. 2 CONT When discovered, the body was lying face downward, the gun underneath. The 2 CONT boys turned the body over. At first it was thought that Buster had committed 2 CONT suicide, but the location of the body, at the entrance to the pasture where he 2 CONT had been going daily to haul rubbish, and the futher fact that Buster was a man 2 CONT who had no trouble and was of a cheerful frame of mind, changed this idea to the 2 CONT belief that death was accidential. That in attempting to climb over the gate, 2 CONT Buster's gun was accidently discharged. 2 CONT The body was taken to Jacksons Undertaking Rooms. The accident happened 2 CONT about 2:00 and the body was found soon after. 2 CONT Buster was 40 years of age and leaves a wife and 5 children, ranging in age 2 CONT from 5-12 years. 2 CONT He drove a one-horse dray wagon as an occupation. A brother, Robert Buster 2 CONT is employed at the Power House. Buster's home was at 508 South 18th St. 2 CONT The gun with which Buster was shot was found to be clogged with dirt at the 2 CONT muzzle, leading to the belief that the accident happened while he was in the 2 CONT buggy, and that he fell out afterwards. His horse and wagon were found on the 2 CONT East side of the RR tracks. 1 NOTE MARRIAGE RECORD: 1987 checked the following 2 CONT Champaign Co, IL searched 1872-1890 No Record 2 CONT Webster Co, NE searched 1882 No Record 2 CONT They were married 9-10-1882 in Rose Hill, Oskaloosa, Mahaska, IA, Elaine Jordan 2 CONT sending record. Here he met and 2 CONT married Jane Woods, daughter of Michael Woods and Ann Lambert. They were 2 CONT parents of nine children. Some time in their early years they moved to North 2 CONT Carolina. 2 CONT Their son, Michael, in his application for pension, states that he 2 CONT was born in Caswell Co., NC., on Aug 7. 1757. Michael enlisted in the Army of 2 CONT VA in May of 1771. 2 CONT Also, Caswell County, NC records show a deed for land which William bought in 2 CONT May of 1764. At that time he purchased 609 acres of land, and on March 15, 2 CONT 1770, , 265 acres more. On July 12, 1770 he sold 328 acres, leaving him still 2 CONT the owner of 546 acres. There is no record of him disposing of any more land 2 CONT before moving back to VA, but he evidently did. 2 CONT It is suggested that he may have had to flee from NC, as many other did 2 CONT because of the Regulator activities. It is recorded that William Buster served 2 CONT on the Grand Jury for the Hillsboro District on Sept 22, 1768, (8-22-1765). His 2 CONT name is listed next to the foreman. At this time the Regulators were giving 2 CONT much trouble in the Hillsboro District, and it hardly seems logical, that if he 2 CONT he were a Regulator, that he would have been serving on the Grand Jury. 2 CONT But, he could have joined between that time and the Battle of Alamance, in 2 CONT Spring of 1771. The leaders of the Regulators were working hard to entice the 2 CONT citizens to join their ranks. They succeeded so well that when they were 2 CONT defeated at the Alamance Battle, thousands of families fled the state, leaving 2 CONT their property behind. 2 CONT This could have happened to William. In 1785 he received a land grant in 2 CONT Wythe Co, VA. He died there in 1795. His will dated March 12,1792, proved on 2 CONT May 13,1795, left everything to his wife, Jane, and on her death, to the 2 CONT children. 2 CONT On Oct 19,1796, his heirs listed 200 acres on Liking River, Harrison Co, 2 CONT VA (now W.VA), patented in the name of William Woods. Jane's death is 2 CONT belived to have occurred about this time. 2 CONT There is recorded in Wythe County, VA, the will of one, William Buster, dated 2 CONT May 1, 1790, which mentions his wife, Jane, leaving his plantation and slaves 2 CONT to her, and on her death, to son, Charles. It also refers to daughters, 2 CONT Elizabeth Byrd, Sarah and sons, David, Michael and Claudius. They came into what is called, "The Platte Purchase", seeking 2 CONT cheap land, but land also rich in natural resources. 2 CONT Missouri was considered a part of the new frontier at this stage in history 2 CONT and the Buster home wa not far from Saint Joseph, which was one of the jumping 2 CONT off places for wagons and settlers going on west. 2 CONT Records show that Archibald sold his farm in Atchison County, MO in 1858, but 2 CONT evidently they continued to live in Atchison for several years, as their son, 2 CONT William Marion, left there to join the southern Army in 1861, and Archibald 2 CONT moved to Nebraska City, NE in 1864. 2 CONT In 1864, because of the troublesome times in Missouri, Archibald moved his 2 CONT family north to Nebraska City, NE. Shortly after this move, Elizabeth's health 2 CONT began to fail. 2 CONT At about this same time the Missouri River was in flood, 1865. Mary Jane 2 CONT Goodman, daughter of Archibald and Elizabeth, and her baby were in danger from 2 CONT the flooding river waters. Her husband, James Goodman, was still in the Army 2 CONT at this time, so Archibald went to her aid. Before he could return home to his 2 CONT beloved wife, Elizabeth, passed away. She died on March 1, 1865, and it was 2 CONT thought that she had Yellow Fever, so she was buried immediately, before 2 CONT Archibald could get back home. 2 CONT Archibald continued on in Nebraska City, after Elizabeth's death. He taught 2 CONT a Subscription School. Most of his wages were paid in meat, corn, wheat, 2 CONT potatoes, or whatever people had to spare. School teachers were scarce and 2 CONT terms were short. School was only corried on during the winter time when 2 CONT children had little else to do. 2 CONT Archibald also made ox-yokes and saddle trees, which his partner covered with 2 CONT rawhide, and they sold them to freighters on the plains. Freighting, from 2 CONT Nebraska City to Denver, was a very thriving business before the coming of the 2 CONT railroads. 2 CONT After his children were married, Archibald spent most of his time in visiting 2 CONT around amidst his children. He used to travel from place to place driving a 2 CONT yoke of oxen hitched to a light wagon. His oxen were named Duke and Dan, and 2 CONT Archibald liked to carry around with him, a homemade rocking chair with a 2 CONT rawhide seat. He always carried this chair with him in his wagon. 2 CONT During the latter years of his life, he lived with his daughter, Sarah 2 CONT Elizabeth Hamilton, on the farm, north of Rockport, MO. 2 CONT These times, when he did visit, he drove a little dark gray mare, name Old 2 CONT Kitty, hitched to a single buggy. His visits were always short now, and he 2 CONT was anxious to return to the farm. 2 CONT It is said that, at the age of 89, he regained his eyesight and could read 2 CONT the newspaper print without the aid of glasses. 2 CONT In his early nineties, he always boasted, and proved, that he could jump up 2 CONT in the air and crack his heels together three times before coming down. 2 CONT In the summertime, you could almost always find him out north of the house, 2 CONT under a lilac tree, sitting in his little old fashioned rocking chair, reading 2 CONT his papers and Bible. He was a deeply religeous man, having claimed to have 2 CONT read the Bible through ninetten times, and well prepared for the day he knew 2 CONT was to come. In the wintertime, his favorite spot was near the west window of 2 CONT the house, reading and awaiting the call, which he knew could not be far off. 2 CONT A short description of him, by one who knew him well, went like this. 2 CONT Archibald had snowy white hair, dark blue eyes, and very heavy white shaggy 2 CONT eyebrows, a short stocky man. He came from a hard working clan, thrifty, but 2 CONT with enough Irish in his blood to give him a keen sense of humor, quick wit, 2 CONT and a loveable disposition. 2 CONT The call, for which he waited, came on April 22, 1894. He had taken a walk 2 CONT out to the barn to see his faithful, "Old Kitty". On his return to the house 2 CONT he fell as he crossed the doorsill. A heart attack had put an end to his long 2 CONT and useful career. He had been the oldest living man in Atchison County, and 2 CONT one of its' first settlers. He was laid to rest in the Hunter Cemetery at 2 CONT Rockport, MO. 2 CONT Archibald had served six weeks as Justice of the Peace of Benton Township in 2 CONT Missouri. After his first case, a particularly trying one, he filed his 2 CONT reports and handed in his resignation. He said he had had enough of that. 2 CONT During his tenure, he had preformed several marriages and at least, one 2 CONT inquest. 2 CONT One time during the Civil War, Archibald was taken prisoner by a band of 2 CONT the guerillas, dressed as Union soldiers. Archibald managed to escape from them 2 CONT and started to walk back home. In some way he had managed to secure a Union 2 CONT coat. He was stopped once; "Who goes there ?", demanded a sentinel. Archibald 2 CONT replied, "Captain Dryden". "Pass on", said the sentinel, and Archibald was safe 2 CONT because he was quick witted enough to give them their own Captain's name, which 2 CONT he had remembered. 1 FAMS @F264@ 1 FAMC @F255@ 0 @I703@ INDI 1 NAME Jane /Buster/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1804 1 NOTE !DOCUMENTATION 2 CONT Information from: 1 NOTE Lue Buster of Broken Arrow, OK 2 CONT Elaine Jordan of Bonner Springs, KS 1 FAMS @F652@ 1 FAMC @F255@ 0 @I704@ INDI 1 NAME Martha /Buster/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 15 APR 1806 2 PLAC ,Greene,TN 1 DEAT 2 DATE 26 FEB 1885 2 PLAC ,Madison,NC 1 BURI 2 PLAC ,c Madison,NC 1 NOTE !DOCUMENTATION 2 CONT Information from: 2 CONT Lou Buster of Broken Arrow, OK 2 CONT Elaine Jordan of Bonner Springs, KS 2 CONT Mrs. Ben Lamb of Rockwood, TN in 1980 2 CONT ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONT Mrs. Lamb only lists the marriage to John Wesley Bartley 1 NOTE Martha Buster DOB: Apr 15, 1806 Place: Greene Co, TN 2 CONT DOD: Feb 26, 1885 Place: Madison Co, NC 2 CONT Married: Aug 14, 1833 Place: Greene Co, TN 2 CONT John Wesley Bartley DOB: Aug 11, 1804 Place: Surry Co, NC 2 CONT DOD: May 8, 1890 Place: Madison Co, NC 2 CONT ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 CONT For further information see under "Woods" 1 FAMS @F265@ 1 FAMS @F266@ 1 FAMC @F255@ 0 @I705@ INDI 1 NAME John /Buster/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1808 1 NOTE !DOCUMENTATION 2 CONT Information provided by 1 NOTE Elaine Jordan of Bonner Springs, KS 1 NOTE MARRIAGE REDORDS Rhea Co, TN 1808-1850 2 CONT John Buster to Polley Eaves 9-17-1833 2 CONT John Buster to Matilda Bedwell 4-7-1833 1 FAMS @F267@ 1 FAMC @F255@ 0 @I706@ INDI 1 NAME Michael Jr. /Woods/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1708 2 PLAC ,,,c Ireland 1 DEAT 2 DATE 9 MAY 1776 2 PLAC ,Botetourt,VA 1 BURI 2 PLAC ,c Botetourt,VA 1 REFN 322 1 NOTE !DOCUMENTATION 1 NOTE Information down through Emily Frances Ames provided by: 2 CONT Emily Frances Ames McClaine, 12813 12th Ave. Hanford, CA 93230. 1 NOTE Information down through Sue Nite provided by: 2 CONT Sue Nite Raguzin, 5008 Briarbrook, Dickinson, TX 77539. 1 NOTE Information down through Frances Elizabeth Collins provided by: 2 CONT Mrs. Elmer Anderson, 520 South 3rd Ave., Walla Walla, WA 99362 dated 3-1974. 1 NOTE Information down through Theda Colleen Figley provided by:
