1 CONT Abstract of Pension Statement made by Reuben Pinion, Anson CO. North

1 CONT On the 9th day of October 1832 personally appeared in open court Reuben 
1 CONC Pennel,alias Reuben Pinion, a resident of the County & state aforesaid 
1 CONC age 87 years,a soldier of the Revolution makes the following disclosures 
1 CONC in order to obtain the benefits of the act of congress June 7,1832. I 
1 CONC volunteered in the County of Surry,NC on Sept. 1778 for 6  months under 
1 CONC Capt James Shepard in the Regimet commanded by Col Williams, Genl 
1 CONC Rutherford's Brigade. Was marched to the head of the Catawba River  In 
1 CONC the County of Burke NC to a place called  Pleasant Gardens where we 
1 CONC joined Genl Rutherford ,was marched into the Cherokee nation of Indians. 
1 CONC We travelled over the greater part of this country but they have taken 
1 CONC flight & flew this country.The army left the Cherokee nation returning 
1 CONC back to the settelment in Burke County , North Carolina where I was 
1 CONC discharged in March 1779 having served my time of 6 months. I  
1 CONC volunteered again in Surry CO. NC in August 1780 under Capt James 
1 CONC Sheppard, Col Martin Armstrong's Regiment, was marched in Sept through NC 
1 CONC into SC York Dist. near (blank) where we arrived in October joined the 
1 CONC combined forces from SC and Kentucky and was in the battel of Kings 
1 CONC Mountain against the British and Tories . Col.Armstrong had charge of the 
1 CONC prisoners taken in this battle .Marched to Hillsbrough NC where I was 
1 CONC discharged in November 1780 having served 3 months . I volunteered again 
1 CONC in December 1780 in Surry NC under Capt James Sheppard in Col. 
1 CONC Armstrong's Regiment . Was marched to Hillsbrough NC from thence to 
1 CONC Guilford Court House & was in the battle of Guilford Court House in March 
1 CONC 1781. After the battle I was marched into Virginia and continued under 
1 CONC the command of Capt Sheppeard Col. Armstrons's Regiment until the 
1 CONC surrender of Lord Carnwallis at York Town to the American forces in 
1 CONC October 1781. Served 10 months and was discarged at Hillsbrough NC in 
1 CONC October 1781 by Col.Armstrong ,have served in all during the 3 terms 18 
1 CONC months .I have lost all of my discharges. There's no documentary  
1 CONC evidence of my sevice & know of no persons who can testify to my services 
1 CONC except my brother  Benjamin Pennel, alias Pinion  of Wilkes CO. whose 
1 CONC deposition I have taken (herewith enclosed).

1 CONT Pinion) made in Wilkes Co. NC at Fort Defiance, 14th day of August 1832
1 CONT who was aged about 63 years stared that in the time of the Cherokee Indian
1 CONT War he lived with his father in Surry Co. NC and remembers well that
1 CONT his brother Reuben Pennel entered into the service as a solider in the 
1 CONT Indian War under Captain James Sheppard and Lieutenant Edward Lovel in
1 CONT the Regiment of Militia of Surry Co. commanded by Col. Martin Armstrong.
1 CONT He remembered other services included the Battle of Kings Mountain.
1 CONT Signed Benjamin ( His Mark) Pennel.
1 CONT The statement by William Lenoir (to whom Benjamin made his statement)
1 CONT also certifys that he ( William Lenoir) was an Officer in the Regiment
1 CONT of Militia of Surry Co. and that Col. Martin Armstrong commanded said
1 CONT regiment in the expedition against the Cherokee Indians in the summer
1 CONT and fall of 1776 under Genl Griffith Rutherford. MR. Lenoir further
1 CONT certified that Capt James Sheppard was in the Battle of Kings Mountain
1 CONT which "I well remember by the singular circumstances of his informing
1 CONT me in the time of the Battle that he could not get his gun off and asking

1 CONC part of Anson County was cut off & froms now part of Union County NC by 
1 CONC an act of Legislature of NC at the sessions of 1842 & 1843.
1 CONT That he is the only living child of Reuben Pinion, alias Pinyan & Lydia 
1 CONC his wife late of Stanly County NC which couny of stanly was cut off & 
1 CONC erected into Stanly County from Montgomery County,NC by the Legislature 
1 CONC of NC about 1840.That his father & mother aforesaid are both dead.
1 CONT That his father the Reuben Pinion alias Pinyan was a private soldier in 
1 CONC the South Carolina Militia in the war of the Revolution as he has heard & 
1 CONC believes which more fully appear by referance to the records of the 
1 CONC Pension Office in Washington City in the District of Columbia.
1 CONT That upon an application made through Col. James Gains of Montgomery 
1 CONC CO.NC (written in above Montgomery is "&Col")Branch Wadesboro NC, his 
1 CONC father the said Reuben Pinion alias Pinyan was placed upon the pension 
1 CONC roll & continued apensioner of the United States for several years 
1 CONC (anterior until?) his death, at the rate of Sixty three dollars 33/100 
1 CONC per annum. 
1 CONT He futher declares that his mother Lydia was married to his father the 
1 CONC said Reuben by one Joshua William Esquire,an acting Justic of the Peace 
1 CONC in Anson County, North Carolina, sometime in the fall of Seventeen 
1 CONC hundred ninty& three (1793) as he been informed & believes & that his 
1 CONC mothers maden name before marriage was Lydia Bond. Page 2.Lydia Bond-That 
1 CONC his father the said Reuben Pinion alias Pinyan died on the 3rd day of 
1 CONC March AD 1843 interstater,leaving his mother the said Lydia a widow. that 
1 CONC she never afterwards married but remained the widow of the said Reuben 
1 CONC until the 18th day of December 1849-when she died -leaving her only 
1 CONC surviving child the said Reuben Wilson Pinion alias Pinyan your affiant & 
1 CONC declarant & that ther is now living no other child of the said Reuben & 
1 CONC Lydia except your petitioner. That his mother the said Lydia never in her 
1 CONC lifetime made any application for a pension .Nor has he or anyother 
1 CONC person for him except the present.That his mother the said Lydia Pinyan 
1 CONC or Pinion died in Cabarrus County North Carolina interstate on the 28th 
1 CONC day of December 1849 & thah there is no public no private,nor family 
1 CONC record of thier age, births, marriages or deaths of either his father or 
1 CONC mother,aforesaid Reuben Pinion alias Pinyan or Lydia his wife & the 
1 CONC mother of your petitioner.That your petitioner cannot tell what has 
1 CONC become of the original Cerificate of Pension under which his father 
1 CONC drew,but that he supposes that it was either destoryed as useless,or 
1 CONC surrenderd up by the Administrator,one Jacob M(or W) Little of Stanly CO. 
1 CONC NC after his fathers death.That it was payable at the agency in 
1 CONC Fayetteville,NC &he prays, that if it was not received by the admr. 
1 CONC aforesaid ,that the amount due his father from his last payment until his 
1 CONC death ,the 3rd March 1843 ,maybe paid to your petitioner & applicant, as 
1 CONC well as the pension due to his mother at the time of her death as the 
1 CONC widow of Reuben Pinion alias Pinyan deceased from March 3rd 1843 to 
1 CONC Decb.18th 1849.
