2 CONT of the 1787 taxes commenced.  During the 1790's both George and Owen
2 CONT appeared in the Wilkes NC tax records.  After 1799 when Ashe Co NC was
2 CONT formed from Wilkes they were listed in the Federal Census of 1800 as
2 CONT living in Ashe Co.  In 1801 and thereafter George and his family
2 CONC members
2 CONT are parties to land grants and deeds in the Prathers Creek Section

2 CONT George goined the Little River Baptist Church in 1809 and his wife

2 CONT "Salley" Elizabeth Kingrey born 1790 in Franklin Co, VA and died at

2 CONT Four, Mc Dowell Co, WV in 1856.  They were married in Franklin Co, VA.

2 CONT Soon after they were married, they moved away from their native
2 CONC Franklin
2 CONT Co, VA home and went West for less than miles, where they joined
2 CONC several
2 CONT former Franklin Co, Belcher families in the Clynch Valley, near where
2 CONT Honaker, VA., is today.  When the William Floyd Belcher, Sr, family
2 CONT arrived in the Clynch Valley, the George, Jesse, Robert and Bartley
2 CONT Belcher families were there.  Jesse and George had been there since
2 CONC 1790.
2 CONT
2 CONT I could not find any records to show what relation one of them was to
2 CONT another one or what relation they were to the "Billy" Belcher Family.
2 CONT Since they were all from Franklin County, it is sage to say they they
2 CONT were all closely related to Billy.
2 CONT
2 CONT The Billy Belcher Family was in Russell County by about 1810.  They
2 CONC soon
2 CONT learned about the free land grants that were being given out in the Mc
2 CONT Dowell County area.  By about 1815 Billy Belcher and his followers had
2 CONT become the first white settlers in the head of the Tug Fork of Tug
2 CONC River,
2 CONT in the area around what is now Anawalt, Mc Dowell Co, WV, which is
2 CONC less
2 CONT than 40 miles north of where they had lived around Homaker in Russell
2 CONC Co,
2 CONT VA.
2 CONT
2 CONT The Billy Belcher Family anf the families who came with them were the
2 CONT first white people to settle in that area of Mc Dowell Co.  From all
2 CONT information which I have, it seemed as though the families listed
2 CONC below
2 CONT came to the Anawalt area with Billy Belcher: the Lester, Wolfe,
2 CONT Bogle,Grose, Bishop, Ed Smith, J. A. Bailey, Gus Dehart, Cleve Taylor
2 CONT families and probably a few more.
2 CONT
2 CONT The earliest settlers in Mc Dowell County, weemed to have been the
2 CONT Milams, who went there from Wyoming Co, the Schraders and the Days.
2 CONC They
2 CONT were in the Elkhorn Valley area.
2 CONT
2 CONT At that time the three most common methods of establishing claim to
2 CONT property were:
2 CONT
2 CONT 1. The Squatters Right or claim was that in which the interested
2 CONC person
2 CONT built a house, moved into it, and took control of all the land that he
2 CONT wanted.
2 CONT
2 CONT 2. The second method was the Hatchet Claim.  By the use of an ax, he
2 CONC went
2 CONT around the outer edge of his boundary and scalped a small amount of
2 CONC bark
2 CONT off the trees to show that this was the end of his property.
2 CONT
2 CONT 3. The last was Corn Claim.  After a family cleared the ground,
2 CONC planted,
2 CONT cutivated, and harvested the corn crop, he could file a claim in his
2 CONT nearest court house.
2 CONT
2 CONT Most people applied all three methods when they were establishing a
2 CONC claim
2 CONT to property.  They built a house to live in. They raised corn for
2 CONC food,
2 CONT and they blazed a trail around the entire property to keep everyone
2 CONC else
2 CONT out of or off the land.
2 CONT
2 CONT After these requirements had been met, a person could rough estimate
2 CONC the
2 CONT acreage and then file a claim to the land.
2 CONT
2 CONT The pioneer leader Billy Belcher soon had a valid claim for the large
2 CONT mountain between Tugg fork and Elkhorn Creek, from point near
2 CONC Pocahontas
2 CONT to where Welch is today.  The mountain is sometimes referred to as the
2 CONT dividing mountain between the two creeks that form the Tug River in
2 CONT Welch.  It is also called Peel-Chestnut Mountain.
2 CONT
2 CONT The Shawnee Indians roamed that area.  The Cherokee Indians were
2 CONC passing
2 CONT through on their way ti Kanawha Walley for salt.  One day the two
2 CONC tribes
2 CONT met in a batter at or near the big gap near Maybeury.  When the batter
2 CONT was over, the Cherokee went on towards Charleston; and the Shawnees,
2 CONC who
2 CONT claimed the area established a monument for their braves that had lost
2 CONT their lives in the battle.  They peeled all the bark off all the
2 CONC chestnut
2 CONT trees up to 20 ft of the area around the gap.  When the Belchers and
2 CONT other arrived, the dead trees were still standing.  The mountain was
2 CONT called the Peel-Chestnut Mountain and the Peel Chestnut Gap has served
2 CONC as
2 CONT a passageway over the mountain from Maybeury to Anawalt to this day.
2 CONT
2 CONT Billy Belcher built a water-operated gristmill on his property, on
2 CONC which
2 CONT he ground grain into meal and flout to be used as food for his family
2 CONC and
2 CONT all the families of the nearby area.
2 CONT
2 CONT In about 1820 the Billy Belchers crossed over the big mountain through
2 CONT the Peel-Chestnut gap and went down to Elkhorn Creek near Maybeury,
2 CONC and
2 CONT containued until they found on the north side of Elkhorn Creek a large
2 CONT boundary of land unclaimed.  They settled at Big Four but had a claim
2 CONC to
2 CONT all the land from Keystone to Welch and around by the West side of
2 CONT Brown's Creek over to and including the upper part of Indian Creek,
2 CONC Burke
2 CONT Mountain, and back to Keystone.  He also help possession of the land
2 CONT while he had the opportunity to hold for his children.  That is what
2 CONC he
2 CONT did as you will notice as you read the book about where his children
2 CONT settled.
2 CONT
2 CONT His wife Salley Kingrey Belcher , died at her home at Big Four in
2 CONC 1856.
2 CONT On 26 Feb 1857, Billy Belcher married Elizabeth Lambert.  He died at
2 CONC his
2 CONT home at Big Four in 1869.

2 CONT following: "Joseph Workman, laborer, 5'8", of thin visage, age 21",and
2 CONT Abraham Workman, laborer, 5'9", of thin visage, age 19", and both gave
2 CONC NJ
2 CONT as their birthplace.

2 CONT The Pa Historical and Museum Commission has a record reflecting
2 CONT "Provincial Service" of a Joheph Workman who enlisted as a private in
2 CONT Capt Charles Stewart's Company 22 Apr 1759 at Chester, Pa.  For this
2 CONT enlistment he
2 CONT gave his age as 24 and his birthplace as NJ.  Although there is a
2 CONT difference in
2 CONT age, it is probably the same Joseph Workman in both enlistments.
2 CONC These
2 CONT two
2 CONT enlistmentswould have given him knowledge of the unsettled territory
2 CONC to
2 CONT the west and experience in protecting himself from the Indians.
2 CONT A marriage recorded 4 Aug 1761 at the Christ Lutheran Church in York
2 CONC Co,
2 CONT Pa states that Joseph, son of Abraham, married "Phebe M'Ray, daughter
2 CONC of
2 CONT Hugh (Juh.) Mecmeher".  The original record was in the Dutch or German
2 CONT language and the transcriber suggested that the maiden name of Phebe
2 CONT might have been M'Meagher.  A study of "History of York Co, Pa" by
2 CONC John
2 CONT Gibson, gave no verification of the presence of a family named
2 CONT McMeagher.  There was a Thomas Mc Creary in York Co, Pa as early as
2 CONT 1754.  Ther is no evidence that
2 CONT Joseph or Phoebe actually lived in Yor Co, and no record of baptism
2 CONC for
2 CONT children of Joseph and Phebe was found in the church records.  A study
2 CONC of
2 CONT "Virginia Court Records in Southwestern Pa 1775-1780" by Boyd Crumrine
2 CONT revealed that in the minute Book of VA Court held for Yohogania Co,
2 CONC first
2 CONT at August Town (now Washington, Pa) and afterwards on the Andrew Heath
2 CONT Farm new W Elizabeth from 1776 to 1780; there is a record of several
2 CONT trials involving those of the Workman name and others of the Mc Mahen
2 CONT (also spelled as Mc Mahan and Mc Mahon) name.  The list of these
2 CONC trials
2 CONT gave only surnames.  Several of these names which appreaed in the
2 CONC index
2 CONT also appeared later in the counties of Monroe, Tazwell, Logan and
2 CONC Boone
2 CONT in VA,areas in which the Workman families also settled.

2 CONT Around 1776, six Workmans settled west of Ft Cumberland, Md.  They
2 CONC were
2 CONT Andrew, Isaac, Jacob, John, Joseph and Stephen Workman and my be
2 CONC presumed
2 CONT to be brothers.  Andrew, Isaac, Jacob, John, and William Workman
2 CONC secured
2 CONT military land grants in what is now Allegany Co,Md in 1788.  "Pa

2 CONT Vol 26, indicates that a Joseph Workman received two land patents in

2 CONT have been a different Joseph Workman, because Joseph and Phoebe's son,
2 CONT Abraham Workman, was married in Montgomery Co, Va in 1785.  Joseph
2 CONT Workman appears on the 1787 Montgomery Co, Va tax list. Some records
2 CONC and
2 CONT family tradition indicate that all or some of Joseph and Phoebe
2 CONC Worman's
2 CONT family migrated to N C about 1788 and singly returned to Va.  They may
2 CONT have been led there by John Workman, who according to census listings
2 CONT settled in Orange Co, NC.  All indications are that some of his
2 CONC Workman
2 CONT family came back into VA about 1789 to settle around Burkes-Garden in
2 CONC the
2 CONT part of Wythe Co which later became Tazwell Co.  Many of their names
2 CONC are
2 CONT found on petitions applying for the formation of Tazwell Co. Joseph
2 CONT Workman, Sr, is on the 1800 Wythe Co tax list and on the 1802 and 1803
2 CONT Tazwell Co tax lists.  In 1805, he was listed as "exempt of taxes due
2 CONC to
2 CONT old age and infirmity".  "Pheby
2 CONT Workman" was listed on the tax records in 1815 which may be an
2 CONC indication
2 CONT that Joseph had died prior to that time.  County historians mention
2 CONC that
2 CONT Joseph Workman was among those early settlers whose bravery helped
2 CONC save
2 CONT settlers from the tomahawk and scalp knives of raiding Indians.

2 CONT 4.  Micajah (McCager) Frasher was born 24 December 1753 in Albemarle
2 CONC Co,
2 CONT VA and died 9 November 1843 in Lawrence Co, Ky.  She married about
2 CONC 1774
2 CONT at Staunton, VA to Susannah "Susan" Hamilton.  She was born about 1758
2 CONC in
2 CONT Orange Co, Va and died in 1852 in Gay Co, VA. Micajah and Susan are
2 CONT buried in the Frasher Hill Cemetery near Fort Gay, WV.  Michaja

2 CONT was in the Revolutionary War. Revolutionary War duety found Micajah at
2 CONT Albemarle Barracks, Hood's Fort,Little York, Williamsburg, Flowery
2 CONT Hundred and building breastworks at Yorktown. Micajah and his family
2 CONT moved sometime after 1790 from Amerst Co, VA toPittsylvania Co, VA
2 CONC where
2 CONT they lived about two years.  They followed the early flow of migration
2 CONT from northwestern VA to Wilkes Co, NC and then on to the Franklin and
2 CONT Patrick Co area of southwestern VA.  After a few years the family
2 CONC moved
2 CONT to Russell Co, VA and in about 1802 to an area newa the Big Sandy
2 CONC River.
2 CONT As the children were grown and married, some lived in Lawrence Co, Ky
2 CONC and
2 CONT others on the VA side of the Big Sandy in what is now Wayne Co, WV.
2 CONT Sometime in about 1835 member of this family including Micajah, Susan,
2 CONT George, John and others moved to Jackson Co,Mo.  Two or three of the
2 CONT grandchildren were born there.  After three or four years all of the
2 CONT family except John returned to Lawrence Co KY.  After their return it
2 CONC is
2 CONT believed that Micajah and Susan lived in Lawrence Co, Ky until Micajah
2 CONT died.  Later she moved to Wayne Co, WV and lived with children and
2 CONT grandchildren.  In 1850 was was living with her grandson Granville.

2 CONT  MATES CREEK PRIMITIVE BAPTIST ASSOCIATION
2 CONT Mates Creek Primitive Baptist Association was an antimission body
2 CONT composed of old Baptist churches in southwestern Virginia, some of
2 CONC which
2 CONT were located in territory which later became Wyoming, Mc Dowell, and
2 CONT Mercer counties, West Virginia. One of these churches was the Pinnacle
2 CONT Fork Primitive Baptist Church, organized about 1840-45 by Rev John S.
2 CONT Mullens, who settled on a farm near Guyandotte River around 1840 or
2 CONT earlier.  The families of Green, Mullens, Buchanan, Sizemore, and
2 CONC Lambert
2 CONT held membership in this church.  The log meeting house built by them
2 CONC soon
2 CONT after its organization, located about three miles up the Pinnacle road
2 CONT and near a small stream which is to this day call Meeting House
2 CONC Branch,
2 CONT was the first house of worship built in Center District and the second

2 CONT County about 1840 with the Edward B Sizemore caravan.  Edward's wife
2 CONC was a
2 CONT sister to Jennie.  George J first lived on Micajah Ridge, later lived

2 CONT 2.  LESTER. The Lester family has been in Virginia since the early
2 CONC years
2 CONT of the Colony.  The first record of the name is found in census taken
2 CONT February,1623, to ascertain the looses by the Indian massacre of 1622,
2 CONC in
2 CONT which reference is made to Thomas Lester, then 32 years of age and a
2 CONT resident of James City.  In 1637 James Lester came over and settle in
2 CONT York County.  He was followed in 1643 by Ralph Lester who settle in
2 CONC York
2 CONT County and in 1653 came a second Thomas Lester, it is not known where
2 CONT this Thomas settled.  By the time of the Revolution the descendants of
2 CONT these five Lesters in Virginia number fully twenty families, besides
2 CONC some
2 CONT who had gone into the Carolinas.  In the Revolution the Virginia
2 CONC Lesters
2 CONT were represented by half a dozen soldiers.

2 CONT I. Abner Lester was one fo the early pioneers of Fincastle County, VA

2 CONT brothers.  Ned married Malinda Jane Workman, daughter of Joseph and
2 CONT Elizabeth (Reed) Workman.  Jane was also reputed to be part Cherokee

2 CONT ABOUT THE INDIAN NED SIZEMORE LEGEND - Ned was probably born abt 1725
2 CONC in
2 CONT VA, and died about 1780 in NC.  His father was either Henry, Ephraim
2 CONC or
2 CONT William Sizemore.  Many people from WV, VA, NC, Tn, Ky, GA, Ala, Md,
2 CONC and
2 CONT Pa claim Indian ancestry through Ned Sizemore.  Most likely it was
2 CONC Ned's
2 CONT wife who had the Indian bloodline.  She was believed to be have been a
2 CONT Jackson, Hart or Owen.
2 CONT
2 CONT Indian ancestry was passed from one generation to another along the
2 CONT Sizemore lineage.  In June 1906 the Supreme Court set aside several
2 CONT million dollars and a large amount of land to be divided among the
2 CONT descendants of the Cherokees who had lost their lands under the Treaty
2 CONC of
2 CONT Echota in 1835.  This Treaty gave all Cherokee land east of the
2 CONT Mississippi River to the U.S. Government.  Most of the Cherokees were
2 CONT forced to relocate ('Trail of Tears") to a reservation in Okla in
2 CONC 1838.
2 CONT The Act of 1906 established a way which Cherokee Descendants could
2 CONC file
2 CONT claims with the U.S. Court of Claims to prove their legal right to
2 CONC share
2 CONT in the benefits.
2 CONT
2 CONT In order to qualify an applicant had to prove ancestry which showed
2 CONC that
2 CONT they6 were a direct descendant to a Cherokee whose name appeared on
2 CONC the
2 CONT Cherokee Census Rolls of 1835, l848, or 1851.  None of the more than
2 CONT 2,000 Ned Sizemore descendants, who filed claims, received any
2 CONC benefits.
2 CONT As a matter of fact and dispite the facts to the contrary, after more
2 CONT than 20,000 pages of applications, affidavits and correspondance were
2 CONT filed with the court, all claims were rejected.  These data are on
2 CONC file
2 CONT in the National Archives in Washington.  These claims represented
2 CONT information that was passed on by work of mouth, therefore, there are
2 CONT inconsistencies, contradictions and inaccuracies in this volumous
2 CONC amount
2 CONT of genealogical data.  The researchers felt that the most accurate
2 CONT information appeared to come from the large branch of the Sizemore
2 CONC Family
2 CONT which mobed from Ashe County, N> to Wyo Co (Est  1850 from Logan), WV
2 CONC (Va
2 CONT until 1863) in 1835.  Perhaps this data was contained in an old family
2 CONT Bible.  Most of the applications were file by descendants of George
2 CONT Sizemore, an early Ashe County resident and a son of Ned.  Most of the
2 CONT claim applications filed, except those from WV, omitted George's name
2 CONC and
2 CONT mistook him for Ned.

2 CONT Ned Sizemore's name was first found in a 1746 land patent in
2 CONC Pittsylvania
2 CONT County, VA (Then Lunenburg Ct).  Edward and the Sizemore family were
2 CONT closely connected to the Jackson, Owen, Green, and Griffin families.
2 CONC By
2 CONT 1774 Edward Sizemore and James Hart were in the same household in old
2 CONT Surry Co, NC.  In 1776 Edward signed a loyalty oath in Botetourt
2 CONC County,
2 CONT VA, and was in court with his son , Owen, in Montgomery County, VA in
2 CONT 1779 for taking part in an insurrection.  After 1779 this Edward
2 CONT disappeared from area records and should not be confused with another
2 CONT Edward Sizemore linging in Hawkins Co, TN in 1790.  It is possible
2 CONC that
2 CONT "our" Ned was the "Tory" Sizemore who was hanged in 1780 in Wilkesboro
2 CONC by
2 CONT Colonel Benjamin Cleveland during the Rev War, but there is no
2 CONC evidence
2 CONT found which proves or disapproves this speculation.
2 CONT
2 CONT Ned Sizemore and his alleged Indian wife had at least six sons, John,
2 CONT George Edward, Owen, Hiram, Ephraim, and Henry, and two daughters whos
2 CONT names are not known.  The daughters married into the Allen and Hall
2 CONT families.
2 CONT
2 CONT REFERENCE: "Records of Eastern Cherokee Ancestry in the U.S. Court of
2 CONT Claims, 1906-1909" - In 1904 the Eastern Cherokees won a million
2 CONC dollar
2 CONT judgement against the U. S. because of it violations of the treaties
2 CONC of
2 CONT 1835-36 and 1845.  The payments were to go to all living persons who
2 CONC had
2 CONT been members of the Cherokee tribe at the time of the treaties, or
2 CONC their
2 CONT descendants.  Over 46,000 people filed a claim.  The claimants resided
2 CONT mostly in Northwestern NC, Northwestern TN, Southwestern VA, Southern
2 CONC WV,
2 CONT and Western ALA.
2 CONT
2 CONT The statements in the claim applications and affidavits filed in
2 CONC support
2 CONT of the claim applications, and in the testimony taken were not
2 CONC entirely
2 CONT consistent but substantially the same claim were made for all these
2 CONT individuals.  More than 60 witness were examined in the field and
2 CONC their
2 CONT testimony can be found in the Court's "Sizemore" record file, pages 1
2 CONC to
2 CONT 75.  Claimants never proved to the Courts satisfaction that any
2 CONC immediate
2 CONT ancestor was ever rnrolled with the Eastern Cherokees, or lived as
2 CONT Indians with the Cherokee Nation durring the treaty of 1835-36.

2 CONT However, most of the claimants of their immediate ancestors were
2 CONC living
2 CONT from 150 to 300 miles from the Cherokee domain at the time.

2 CONT From th accounts, affidavits and testimony, it appears that Ned
2 CONC (Edward)
2 CONT Sizemore was born in Halifax Co, NC (VA?), between 1740 and 1760, and
2 CONC was
2 CONT enrolled upon the roll of the Cherokee Nation taken and made in the
2 CONC year
2 CONT 1748 in the CATAMBA Reservation.  (William H. Blevins, a prominent man
2 CONT (served as their unofficial chief) amoung the claimants and one who
2 CONC has
2 CONT been largely instrumental in prosecuting claims testified (Sizemore
2 CONT testimony p.56) "I remember one Elish Blevins who said that old Ned
2 CONT Sizemore came fro the Catawha River, or Catawha Reservation, as he
2 CONC called
2 CONT it.  Wesley Blevins testified in 1896 to the same story.)

2 CONT There is some eivdence that New Sizemore came from SC.  In any event
2 CONC none
2 CONT of the witnesses placed him within the territory of the Cherokee
2 CONC Nation
2 CONT before 1848, which was 3 yrs after the treaties.  The claimants wer

2 CONT examined as witnesses were nearly all well advanced in age and
2 CONC testified
2 CONT almost without exception that they and their parents were generally
2 CONT recognized as white people, and , they nor their parents had ever
2 CONT received any money from the Federal government as Indians and had
2 CONC never
2 CONT enrolled as such.

2 CONT initiated they had no idea what tribe of Indians they belonged, but
