1 NOTE SPECULATION: Benjamin is not shown in the 1820 Burke County census,
2 CONT leaving us to believe that he died between 25 Feb 1819 and the taking of
2 CONT the 1820 census. He was likely the husband of Abigail shown in the 1820
2 CONT and 1830 Burke censuses. The fact that Abigail remained in close to
2 CONT Elisha tends to reinforce the assumption that this is her son. There is no
2 CONT concrete evidence to link Elisha Bergeron (b. 1748) to Elisha Bargeron (b.
2 CONT 1801) however the known facts seem to support this conclusion. First
2 CONT the name "Elisha" seems to carry forward from grandfather to grandson.
2 CONT Second, Elisha (b. 1748) is documented by several sources to have moved
2 CONT ,Burke, Georgia at about the same time as Benjamin and Elijah, and the
2 CONT age differences would indicate Benjamin and Elijah were his possible
2 CONT sons. Third, the land lottery records of 1805 indicate Benjamin had a
2 CONT family and Elijah did not and additionally indicate the that Elisha,
2 CONT Benjamin, and Elijah were apparently together. Additionally the
2 CONT Bergeron/Bargeron name is unique and searches of available records do
2 CONT not indicate any other possible progenitors for Elijah or Benjamin. There
2 CONT are no known facts that would indicate that this conclusion is invalid.
2 CONT Documented sources provide proof of the lineage from Jacques Bergeron
2 CONT (b. 1680 in France) to the present day Bargerons except that the link
2 CONT between Elisha Bargeron (b. 1748) and his probable son Benjamin
2 CONT Bargeron (b. about 1780) and grandson Elisha Bargeron (b. 1801) cannot
2 CONT be documented.

2 CONT "200 acres of land in the county of Burke originally granted to James

2 CONT records exist for this grant. The fact that Benjamin had died and had a
2 CONT family (the reference to orphans in 1821) is proven by this record.

2 CONT sigificance of this reference is that Benjamin was alive in 1817, and
2 CONT that he was living in District 64 (since the land was bounded
2 CONT northwestwardly by Briar Creek). This makes him the likely husband of
2 CONT Abigail who is the only Bargeron in District 64 in the 1820 census.
1 NOTE !CENSUS: The 1830 census of Burke County, Georgia does not list
2 CONT Benjamin but has Abigail Bargeron (age 40 to 50) and Elisha Bargeron
2 CONT (age 20 to 30) next door to one another in District 64 and Elijah Bargeron
2 CONT listed in District 68. Comment: It seems likely that due to the ages and
2 CONT close proximity that Abigail and Elisha were likely mother and son.

1 NOTE COMMENTS: It is not known with any degree of certainty who the parents
2 CONT of this person are. It is probable that he is the unknown male in the
2 CONT household of Elijah between the ages of 5 and 10 in 1830. However, this
2 CONT leaves some speculation concerning "Jane Barjarson" also shown on the
2 CONT 1850 census. Perhaps this Benjamin was also the husband of Jane, and
2 CONT was for some reason in the household of Matthew Griffin, age 22, when
2 CONT the 1850 census was taken. Also in the Griffin household was George W.
2 CONT Griffin, a dentist, age 33. Perhaps Benjamin Bargerons presence in this
2 CONT household was related to dental care. It is believed that this Benjamin
2 CONT Bargeron is probably the son of Elijah since his age matches that of the
2 CONT unknown male, and because the Griffin household is in the same district,
2 CONT and listed on the same page with Elijah. There are no later records for
2 CONT this Benjamin Bargeron in later census records. However, the "Benjamin
2 CONT E.  Bargeron" shown in the soldier list of the Civil War could perhaps be
2 CONT Benjamin BARGERON (c1825-?) this person as we don*t know his middle
2 CONT initial. It has been thought that the Benjamin referenced in the Civil War
2 CONT records is Benjamin the son of Elisha, but the middle initial doesn*t
2 CONT match, and there is a son of Elisha, but the middle initial does not
2 CONT match, and there is a discrepancy in the birth dates (although they are
2 CONT close in both cases).

2 CONT before in Beaufort or Craven County, North Carolina. A poll tax listing of
2 CONT Dobbs County, North Carolina in 1769 documents Elisha as the son of
2 CONT Elias. A 1780 taxpayer list of Dobbs County, North Carolina list Elias
2 CONT Bergeron and John Bergeron as taxpayers. Elisha is not listed, perhaps
2 CONT because he was fighting in the Revolutionary War or perhaps had moved
2 CONT to South Carolina.

2 CONT H.R. Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in the Sardis cemetery.
2 CONT Mr. Bargeron was a life long resident of Burke County, spending his
2 CONT entire life engaged in farming. He was a Member of the Sardis Baptist
2 CONT Church. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ida Bonnell Bargeron; two
2 CONT daughters, Mrs. G.H. Cooper of Munnerlyn, Ga., Mrs. M.M. Hale, of Rawleigh,

2 CONT names were: Jeane, Anne, Jean, Elie, and Marguerite. In 1725 a petition
2 CONT dealing with the French Church of New York list a signer by the name of
2 CONT James Bergeron, Jacques generally translates to James.
