1 NOTE Bob grew up in Colorado Springs.  He attended Steele Elementary
2 CONC School, North Junior High and Colorado Springs High (now Palmer).  He
2 CONC graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1958 with two
2 CONC bachelor of science degrees, one in mechanical engineering and one in
2 CONC business.  He later received a master if science in mechanical
2 CONC engineering from Georgia Tech in Atlanta Georgia.  While attending
2 CONC school, he worked summers for the Soil Conservation Service, designing
2 CONC floodwater control dams .  He joined the Navy and attended Officer
2 CONC Candidate School at Newport Rhode Island in the fall of 1958 and was
2 CONC commissioned an Ensign in December.  After receiving his commission,
2 CONC he went to Civil Engineer Corps Officers School at Port Hueneme CA.
2 CONC From there, he was ordered to Charleston SC for three years of active
2 CONC duty.  In Charleston he met and married Doris Bethea.  When his active
2 CONC duty was completed, he continued work for the Navy as a civilian. He
2 CONC eventually attained the position of Head, Mechanical Branch, Southern
2 CONC Division Naval Facilities Engineering Command, serving fifteen years
2 CONC in that position before his 1990 retirement. In 1992, after Doris also
2 CONC retired, they moved to Colorado Springs.

1 NOTE Edward was born at home in Lawrence.  His childhood was a normal one.
2 CONC He attended Pinkney Grade School, Lawrence Junior High, and Lawrence
2 CONC High School.  In 1927 he graduated from Kansas University with a
2 CONC degree in business.  He enjoyed working in the trades, electrical,
2 CONC carpentry, etc. He met his wife Lydia on a blind date.  After
2 CONC graduation from college, he applied for a job with Alexander
2 CONC Industries in Colorado Springs, thinking he would be involved with the
2 CONC aircraft branch.  To his suprise, he ended up working with Alexander's
2 CONC Film Company, which specialized in advertisments for the movie
2 CONC industry. Assignment to the film company was a fortunate development,
2 CONC since the aircraft organization soon went broke and was discontinued.
2 CONC He eventually became Vice President and Treasurer of the firm.  He was
2 CONC a Mason and was also a member of Kiwanis. He worked extensively in
2 CONC Junior Achievement. He was extremely loyal to his family. Edward was
2 CONC cremated. His ashes were spread at 14425 Timberedge Lane, Colorado
2 CONC Springs in a bed of columbine.

2 CONC College library.  She was very active in Girl Scouting while her
2 CONC children grew up.  She was extremely loyal to her husband and
2 CONC children.

3 CONC memorial service was held at 9:00 a.m. on 25 February 1997 at Swan-Law
3 CONC Cascade Chapel. Officiating was Rev. Marilyn Ebersole. Attending were
3 CONC the following: Dave and Mary (Foster) Creger, Phil and Julie (Frazer)
3 CONC Foster, Emma Frazer, Jim and Julie (Satterly) Foster and Jim's son
3 CONC Jimmy, Charles and Sharon (Foster) Greenbaum and their daughter Sarah,
3 CONC Bob and Doris (Bethea) Foster and their son Kyle who came from
3 CONC California for to give support when it was needed.

1 NOTE Henry was born just before his father George volunteered in the Civil
2 CONC War.  Henry barely knew his father since he deserted the family soon
2 CONC after his return from the war.  Henry grew up with his mother and his
2 CONC aunt Sarah Smith.  When he was just seventeen, his mother died of
2 CONC cancer.  Henry's occupation was with the Postal Service, sorting mail
2 CONC on railroad cars, until his retirement in 1926. Much of the time
2 CONC during his marriage to Alice Bushbee, he lived at 216 west 9th street
2 CONC in Pueblo, Colorado.  He later lived in Lawrence, Kansas, his last
2 CONC residence being at 504 Ohio street.  He took his vacations to Colorado
2 CONC Springs. This led to his son Edward's desire to settle there.  He was
2 CONC an avid photographer and as a result we have many pictures of his
2 CONC family.

2 CONC heart. She grew up in a large family. She graduated from Lawrence High
2 CONC school in 1894. The ceremonies were held 24 and 25 May. Before her
2 CONC marriage to Henry Foster, she worked for the "Lawrence Journel World".
2 CONC  After her husband died, she moved to Colorado Springs where she lived
2 CONC with her brother Bert at 1604 north Franklin street, just north of her
2 CONC son Edward (1526). Her sister Nelle also lived some of the later years
2 CONC of her life in Colorado Springs, at 1510 north Franklin, a few doors
2 CONC south.  She always had an emaculately clean house. Julia died of
2 CONC cancer.

1 NOTE Arte (he preferred Art) was born in Maine. In 1885, he moved to
2 CONC Lawrence, Kansas where he remained for the rest of his life. He was
2 CONC married by a Lutheran pastor, since Ida was a member of that church.
2 CONC Arte was a member of the Plymouth Congregational church and served for
2 CONC two years as sunday school superintendant.  His career was in the
2 CONC banking business, his last position being with People's State Bank in
2 CONC Lawrence.  He was on the Lawrence Board of Education for at least six
2 CONC years, and also was elected and served for a two year term as City
2 CONC Treasurer.  As a 33rd degree Mason, he served a term as State
2 CONC Commander, an accomplishment of which he was very proud.  He was a
2 CONC very energetic individual who loved to play golf. Several of Arte's
2 CONC homes in Lawrence were 805 Mississippi street (still in nice condition
2 CONC in 1995), 1327 New Hampshire (a stone home still occupied in 1995),
2 CONC 2225 Barker avenue, three blocks from Haskell Institute the indian
2 CONC school, and finally 120 west 13th street. The 13th street home was
2 CONC demolished some time before 1995, since a bank was on the site at that
2 CONC time.

1 NOTE George's Civil war record gives, in separate entries, his birth
2 CONC location as both Utica New York and Mineral County Michigan (which
2 CONC never existed). He was a corporal in Company F, 17th Regiment of the
2 CONC Illinois Volunteers. His occupation was a wheelwright.  He was tall
2 CONC for his day, being just under 6 feet. After he married Eliza Smith
2 CONC and, before he enlisted in the army (cavalry), he worked for a time at
2 CONC a flour mill in Nora Illinois.  He abandoned Eliza and his son Henry
2 CONC in 1866 and they never saw him again. He then married Sarah Reese in
2 CONC Tama County Iowa on 11 april 1867.  He and Sarah were in Graniteville
2 CONC Missouri in 1889.  I believe he was the George Foster in the Mason's
2 CONC Mosaic Lodge number 351 in Belleview, Missouri, about five miles from
2 CONC Graniteville. They (the Masons) have a different death date than that
2 CONC shown in his death certificate. He died in Marshalltown Iowa on 29
2 CONC January 1914 of a slight stroke and pneumonia.

1 NOTE Eliza was born in Lehigh County Pennsylvania. Some time between her
2 CONC birth and 1834 her family moved to Clinton County. In 1841 her mother
2 CONC died. In 1848 her family moved to Illinois, settling in Stephenson
2 CONC County.  She learned the trade of milliner and practiced in Freeport,
2 CONC Warren, and Monroe, Wisconsin.  In the spring of 1864 while her
2 CONC husband was serving in the civil war, Eliza's sister Sarah came to
2 CONC live with her. In april of that year, they moved from Nora to Warren,
2 CONC where they opened a dress making shop.  In November 1865 George was
2 CONC discharged, but soon thereafter he abandoned Eliza and their son
2 CONC Henry, never to be seen by them again.  Eliza died of cancer.

1 NOTE Enos was a private in Company G of the 133rd Indiana Infantry. While
2 CONC in the military he was employed in railroad guard duty until General
2 CONC Sherman's march to the sea was completed. He was a member of the
2 CONC Unitarian Church. Enos' home of record was Annapolis until 1865 when
2 CONC he moved to Montezuma. Later (1876) he relocated to Lawrence where he
2 CONC lived the rest of his life. He was skilled as an all-around mechanic,
2 CONC carpenter, cabinet maker, and painter. He and two of his sons operated
2 CONC a construction firm.  To quote from his obituary which was written by
2 CONC a professor  W. C. Stevens, he was "simple, friendly, kindly,
2 CONC skillful, intellegent, loving, and lovable". He was tall and erect in
2 CONC stature and photographs of him with his wife were striking because she
2 CONC was so short.

1 NOTE Caroline lost her mother within days after her birth.  Although it has
2 CONC not been verified, it has been passed down that Caroline was taken by
2 CONC her grandmother to the Hamilton plantation in Kentucky immediately
2 CONC after her mother died. Reportedly, she was nursed by a slave. About a
2 CONC year after her birth, she appeared in the 1850 Parke County Indiana
2 CONC census in the household of Mary Vanlandingham (Mary Hamilton, her
2 CONC grandmother).  Her father appears in the same census in another
2 CONC household with Caroline's aunt, Pamelia, who had already become her
2 CONC step mother.  It has also been passed down through the generations
2 CONC that Caroline was educated in a convent, "St. Mary's in the woods" in
2 CONC Terre Haute. Reportedly, she was there in 1865 when President Lincoln
2 CONC was assasinated. She appears in the 1860 Parke County census with her
2 CONC father and her second of three step mothers, Mary Millikin.

1 NOTE Emmanuel was born in Weiler, Wuerttemberg, Germany.  He landed in the
2 CONC U.S. 23 October 1847 with his parents. (ref. Family history tabulated
2 CONC by Anna Sophie Hutt in November 1914 and updated in June 1948.) He
2 CONC served in the Civil War as a private in Company E of the 1st Wisconsin
2 CONC Volunteer Cavalry.  He was involved in Sherman's march to the sea. He
2 CONC was captured and spent time at Andersonville prison camp in Sumter
2 CONC County Georgia, undergoing many hardships there. (over 28 per cent of
2 CONC the 49485 prisoners who were held there died) he was with the group
2 CONC that captured Jefferson Davis near Macon, Georgia, at the end of the
2 CONC war.  He was discharged on 19 july 1865 at Edgefield, Tennessee. The
2 CONC records for Company E stated that Emanuel was a farmer, 5 feet 7
2 CONC inches in height with brown hair and hazel eyes. He married and lived
2 CONC in Chicago for a few years.  Then, with his family, he moved to Clay
2 CONC County Iowa, and took out a homestead claim.  In 1876 his family and
2 CONC two other families went by covered wagon to Lawrence, Kansas. His
2 CONC first job there was hauling rock from the present site of Kansas
2 CONC University to the construction site of a dam which was being built on
2 CONC the Kaw River.  His later years were spent as a contractor and
2 CONC builder. His residence in Lawrence, which was on Tennessee street, was
2 CONC later occupied by several of his daughters.

2 CONC ten miles northeast of Lock Haven. In 1840 Hannah died, having lost
2 CONC her eyesight some years before.  In 1848 Henry and his five daughters,
2 CONC in company with five neighboring families, crossed the mountains in
2 CONC wagons to Hollidaysburg, took railroad cars to Johnstown, a canal boat
2 CONC to Pittsburgh, a steamboat to Cairo, and up the Mississippi to Savanna

2 CONC part of Pickaway County Ohio. In 1828 Joseph's father James moved the
2 CONC family to Parke County. One write-up about Joseph passed down through
2 CONC the generations states that he was reared by his uncle, Captain Wolfe.
2 CONC At the age of 18, Joseph decided to quit farming and began business
2 CONC for himself, initially working on flatboats on the Mississippi. In
2 CONC 1849 he managed a rented ferry which he later bought. He continued in
2 CONC this business until 1892 when a bridge was built over the Wabash
2 CONC river. In 1872, he established the Montezuma Fire Brick company. The
2 CONC company originally employed 10 men, but eventually the organization
2 CONC grew to between 40 and 50. Products of the firm were sold in twelve
2 CONC states around Indiana. He initially was one-fourth owner of the brick
2 CONC company. Later, he became full owner.  Joseph also owned 600 acres of
2 CONC land in Vermillion County. Joseph was a Whig and later a Republican.
2 CONC His first wife, Caroline Vanlandingham, died soon after the birth of
2 CONC their daughter, who was also named Caroline. His second wife was
2 CONC Permeli Vanlandingham, sister of Caroline. Death again robbed Joseph
2 CONC of his wife and he married Mary Millikin of Vermillion county as his
2 CONC third. Six children were the product of this marriage. His fourth
2 CONC wife, Elizabeth, had been previously married to the brother of Speaker
2 CONC Cannon of Danville Illinois. His wife listed on his death certificate
2 CONC was Anna Bury, while his obituary identifies her as Elizabeth
2 CONC (Donaldson) Cannon. I believe that the death certificate is probably
2 CONC incorrect on this point. Joseph's death certificate gives his father's
2 CONC name as James Burns, born in Pennsylvania. The death certificate gives
2 CONC his mother's birth location as Ohio but does not name her. Joseph's
2 CONC obituary is quoted as follows. "The subject of this sketch was an
2 CONC enterprising citizen, a man of broad views and noble disposition, a
2 CONC kind husband and an indulgent parent. He was a self made man who
2 CONC earned the love and esteem of all with whom he came in contact by his
2 CONC sterling worth and good qualities of mind and heart, and he was an
2 CONC honest man - the noblest work of God." A large oil portrait of Joseph,
2 CONC which was painted by his daughter Mary L. (Burns) Hancock, is in the
2 CONC possession of the Montezuma, Indiana Public Library. Joseph's assets
2 CONC in the 1860 census were $2000 real estate and $2000 personal estate.
2 CONC The reply to a letter sent by me to the Pickaway County Historical and
2 CONC Genealogical Library indicates that Joseph was reared by his uncle,
2 CONC Captain Wolfe, indicating Mary, his mother had a brother.

1 NOTE James volunteered for the War of 1812 at Jefferson, Ohio (three miles
2 CONC south of Circleville) on 27 April 1812. He served as 4th Sergeant in
2 CONC Captain Fryatt's company of the Ohio Militia.  In an engagement at Aux
2 CONC Canards river, he was wounded in the leg by a musket ball, and
2 CONC captured by the indians.  He was later purchased by a british officer
2 CONC from the indians "at the paltry sum of a gallon of rum" and remained
2 CONC his captive until the surrender of Detroit by General Hull.  After the
2 CONC surrender, he was released on parole, and was discharged 7 may 1813.
2 CONC He was allowed bounty of 160 acres of land and a $4.00 per month
2 CONC pension as a result of his service.  After the war, he returned to his
2 CONC Ohio home and followed his trade as a tanner and shoemaker.  He was a
2 CONC "staunch advocate of the Whig party and a Henry Clay man". (History of
2 CONC Parke County, 1893)  on 23 October 1828 he arrived at Armiesburg,
2 CONC Parke County Indiana and stayed in that county until his death.
2 CONC Nothing is known about James' father except that he died as a result
2 CONC of being thrown from a horse in Pennsylvania. James appeared in the
2 CONC 1850 Parke County census with his son Joseph, 85th District Parke
2 CONC County, household 1060.  James first child by his second wife was born
2 CONC 28 December 1828, indicating a marriage near the start of that year.
2 CONC Another source states that James' first wife died in 1831.  This
2 CONC discrepency has not yet been explained. James was identified as Joseph
2 CONC Burn's father in Joseph's death certificate.

1 NOTE Simon bought a farm in Anson 23 March 1827 while he was still
2 CONC unmarried. He built a commodious house there which was burned in May
2 CONC 1853. His family lived in a nearby schoolhouse and slept in the barn
2 CONC while he rebuilt another. His farm was a good one and was the family
2 CONC home until both he and his wife passed away. Hard work enabled he and
2 CONC his wife to raise ten children and build two homes without incurring
2 CONC any debt. He had a store in the village two and a half miles away for
2 CONC a number of years but sold it after his house burned. He was a
2 CONC constant church attendant, acting as leader of the church choir in his
2 CONC younger days. He served several terms in responsible town offices.

1 NOTE Augustus and his family moved to California in September, 1857. He
2 CONC went into sheep raising; first in the Salinas Valley and later in
2 CONC Santiago Canyon in the northeast part of what is now Orange county. In
2 CONC 1887 the family to Sierra Madre where they stayed until 1906 when they
2 CONC moved again, this time to Pasadena. While in Sierra Madre, Augustus
2 CONC was a horticulturist, planting and cultivating a variety of fruits
2 CONC (mostly oranges) on the five acres he owned. The Sierra Madre home of
2 CONC the Bixbys can be seen at 397 W. Montecito Avenue.

1 NOTE Soloman served in the Revolutionary War, being discharged 8 August
2 CONC 1780. He appeared in the 1790 Hancock County Maine census.  In July
2 CONC 1792 he moved to Norridgewock.  He served fourteen years as one of the
2 CONC Selectmen of the town.  He was a Deacon of the Congregational Church
2 CONC and was one of the twenty four who organized it in 1797.  According to
2 CONC the "Bixby Genealogy" he had the best and most productive farm in
2 CONC town, and enjoyed the fruits of his labor with all the comforts and
2 CONC conveniences of life, and left a good estate.

1 NOTE Samuel was one of the early settlers of Sutton, Massachusetts.  In
2 CONC 1714 the proprietors of Sutton Township, in an effort to procur
2 CONC settlers, granted 4000 acres to the first thirty approved families to
2 CONC settle there. In 1717 Samuel was one of those approved.  The thirty,
2 CONC disposed of 2800 of the acres to a John Stockwell on 20 Feb 1718.
2 CONC This left 1200 acres which was divided into 40 acre homesteads.  The
2 CONC location of Samuel's homestead was in that part of Sutton which is now
2 CONC the town of Millbury.
