(Portrait and Biographical Review.) : 1 HIST When she was twenty-six years old, our subject (Maria Jackson Martin Ragan Clayton) married Isaiah Ragan, of Ohio, in 1869, in Hardin County, where they lived two years, and then lived in Livingston County, Ky., for the same length of time. 2 CONT In January, 1873, they removed to the present home of Mrs. Clayton, where she has lived ever since. They had but little to begin with, but at that time had saved up some money and bought two hundred and fifty acres of land with fair 2 CONT improvements for $1250, paying all down but $200, the rest within one year. After three years they bought eighty acres more, making the present farm three hundred and thirty acres, situated on Section 31, township 11, range 6. Mr. Ragan died 2 CONT in July of 1877, at the age of thirty-five, leaving his widow with two sons and two daughters, viz.: William Henry, a young man at home; John, twenty years old, Narrissa, a young lady; and Mollie, fifteen years of age. They were also the grandparents of your grandfather, H.L. Ragan, Sr. Isaiah Ragan came from a point in Ohio just across the river from Wheeling, W. Virginia. He 2 CONT came down the river and settled on a farm in Hardin County, Illinois, near Elizabethtown. Mariah Ragan's maiden name was Martin and there are some of her family still living in Hardin County, I think, but I do not know them. Your 2 CONT great-grandfather, Henry Ragan, was born on the farm in Hardin County, but while still a child the family moved to a farm in Pope County, Illinois, about four miles east of Eddyville. I do not have available the dates of Isiah Ragan's birth or 2 CONT death, but may find them later and will let you know then. I doubt very much if I can find the dates of Mariah Ragan's birth or death. Their children were Henry Ragan, your great-grandfather, John L. (Lasson) Ragan, my father, Nerissa, who 2 CONT married a man named Styles, and Mollie, who married Elijah Reynolds. (Portrait and Biographical Review.) : 1 NOTE Mrs. Maria CLAYTON, widow of the late John CLAYTON, is a daughter of Isaac L. and Nancy (JACKSON) MARTIN, deceased, and at the present time resides in township 11, range 6, Pope County. Her father was a native of Tennessee, and his wife of 2 CONT Hardin County, Ill. In 1824, when a lad of twelve years, he came to Illinois with his parents, and here lived and died on his farm. He was a brave soldier in the Black Hawk war and married a lady by the name of Nancy Jackson, who had been 2 CONT previously married to George Doctorman, by whom she had two sons, one of whom grew to mature years. She bore Mr. Martin four sons and four daughters. One daughter died in infancy, and there are now living but four of the eight children. 2 CONT George, the second child and first son, was a volunteer in Company A, Twenty-ninth Illinois Infantry, under the command of Capt. Terrell, and later under Capt. Howard. He enlisted when seventeen years of age, in 1862, as a private soldier, and 2 CONT was taken prisoner near Natchez, Miss., where he was confined one year, and died of scurvy and starvation in November, 1865, in his twentieth year. The family could learn nothing of his fate until a long time after his death. Franklin P. died 2 CONT in March, 1872, in his eighteenth year, of pneumonia. John died in 1874, in his twenty-second year, of fever. The surviving members of the family are Mrs. Maria Clayton, of this sketch; Anna, wife of Marshall Iliff, a farmer of Hardin County; 2 CONT Izora, widow of John Keeling, residing on her farm near Elizabethtown, and Isaac L. a farmer of Hardin County. He came down the Ohio River from his home just across the river in Ohio from Wheeling, West Virginia. He settled in 2 CONT HardinCounty and soon was married to Mariah Martin. They were the paternal grandparents of Cressie Ragan. 1 NOTE After living in Hardin County for a few years they moved to a farm in Pope County, about four miles east of Eddyville. The younger of their two sons was john L. Ragan. He lived on a part of the farm he inherited from his parents and here 2 CONT Cressie was born to John and his wife Effie Williams Ragan. 1 NOTE Cressie lived there until he was eleven and a half years old, at which time he became disabled in the left leg by a slight injury which caused an infection of the bone. There were no antibiotics at this time to stop infections of this 2 CONT type, so the leg became completely useless and he walked on crutches for many years. Some time after the discovery of antibiotics the leg was amputated. Now, with a prosthesis, Cressie can walk with the aid of a cane. 1 NOTE There was no high school near the Ragan home in Eddyville where they moved after Cressie became disabled, so he took a home-study course for a high school certificate after graduating from the local grade school. College was unavailable to 2 CONT him. He learned bookkeeping and typing by studying at home and working part time in a small bank in Eddyville which his father operated for several years. 1 NOTE After his father died and the bank was discontinued, he was encouraged by some friends to run for political office. He was elected Pope County Circuit Clerk & Recorder and served in that office for thirty-eight years. He was elected to 2 CONT ten four-year terms, but served only half of the last term because of failing health. Cressie feels much gratitude to the good people of Pope County for electing him to this office for so many years. 1 NOTE In 1949 Cressie was married to Bernice Smith, daughter of Ray and Kate Craig Smith, who was born and raised in the north part of Pope County. Her mother, Kate Craig before marriage, was a school teacher in adjoining Johnson County. 2 CONT Bernice's paternalgrandmother came from Kentucky and her maiden name was Cobb.
