1 NOTE Louise Patt Barrickman,  said that her grandparents
2 CONT and  children, Louise Marie, Frank, William, and
2 CONT Pauline came to America in 1882 and settled in Minnesota
2 CONT (Lake City, Wabasha Co., MN).    Later they settled in Alma, WI which
2 CONT is just
2 CONT across the river from Lake City.  Alma is just north of Wabasha where
2 CONT the
2 CONT Patts supposedly had their farm.

2 CONT We know Christian and Dorothea
2 CONT said they were from Germany, but we have found that Dorothea was from
2 CONT Northeast of Berlin over the border of what is now Poland.  I suspect
2 CONT Christian was from a similar area, but we don't have proof.  Our
2 CONT great-grandmother, Louise Maria,  was born in Moderow, Pommern,
2 CONT Prussia.
2 CONT
2 CONT Research has found that Moderow, Pommern, Prussia to
2 CONT be part of Poland. Pommern is a large state and in a
2 CONT triangle with two other states, one of which has
2 CONT Berlin in it.  Moderow does exist as a town in Kreis
2 CONT (county) Saatzig in Pommern (German spelling)
2 CONT Pomerania (English spelling).  People often gave name
2 CONT of large town nearby - usually Stettin but Berlin if
2 CONT that is all they remember.

2 CONT We figure Moderow could be as close to Berlin as 90
2 CONT miles or maybe a couple hundred.

2 CONT We found a book w/German names and found Wendt and
2 CONT originally was from the Northeast part (which is
2 CONT where Pommerinania is) and has many derivetives
2 CONT including Wendland.  Myron Gruenwald has told us that
2 CONT Wendt, and its derivations Wendt, Wendtland,
2 CONT Wendland, and Wendtlandt is based on accent AND the
2 CONT fact that there are no spelling rules in German until
2 CONT Hitler's time. All came from the word Wend.  The Wend
2 CONT tribes were Slavs, cousins to the Poles, Slovaks, and
2 CONT some Russians.  Came to mean "travler" (as we wend
2 CONT our way through a path or manuscript).  There are
2 CONT many tribes of Wends and around the Baltic sea; just
2 CONT as there were many tribes of Germans.  The Germans
2 CONT are Teutons, cousins to the Scandinavians, English,
2 CONT and French (and others).

2 CONT My aunt says the original name may have been more
2 CONT like Wentland or Wentlandt, but this is based on
2 CONT accent, not written word.  We don't know what it was
2 CONT spelled like in the old country.

2 CONT The Wendlands moved to Switzerland from Berlin as they
2 CONT were Swiss and had a candy factory in Switzerland.

2 CONT Brenda Voght says they immigrated in 1882.
2 CONT Brenda says the 1910 Buffalo County, Nelson WI census says Christian
2 CONT is 71,
2 CONT born in Germany, married 48 years to Dorthia who is 71.  They had 6
2 CONT children;
2 CONT four living.
2 CONT Brenda says Christian was born in March 1839 in Germany.  We had
2 CONT 4/12/1841,
2 CONT but that is probably in error so we changed it to March 1839.

2 CONT The death of Christian Friederich Wendland, as mentioned in our issue
2 CONT of last
2 CONT week, occurred at the home of his son, William Wendland, in the town
2 CONT of Nelson
2 CONT on Monday, June 19, 1922, death claiming this highly respected and
2 CONT aged
2 CONT resident at 6:00 p. m. that day, following an attack of apoplexy.
2 CONT
2 CONT Deceased was born in Moderow, Pommern, Germany, March 26, 1839, and
2 CONT was
2 CONT therefore 83 years of age at the time of his demise.  He spent the
2 CONT early years
2 CONT of his life in Germany, following the occupation of farming most of
2 CONT the time.
2 CONT He was married there to Sophia Siegenhagen in 1862, six children being
2 CONT born to
2 CONT this union, two of whom died in infancy.
2 CONT
2 CONT Mr. Wendland and family came to this country in 1882, settling in the
2 CONT town of
2 CONT Nelson where he was engaged in farming for many years.  His wife
2 CONT preceded him
2 CONT to the grave, deceased making his home with his son William and family
2 CONT during
2 CONT the last years.  He was an upright and honest citizen, toiling
2 CONT faithfully and
2 CONT industriously during many years to provide for his family as best he
2 CONT could.
2 CONT His passing is mourned by a large circle of friends and neighbors.
2 CONT
2 CONT Deceased leaves two sons: Frank of Sheboygan, this state and William
2 CONT of the
2 CONT town of Nelson; and two daughters, Mrs. John Patt of Baltimore,
2 CONT Maryland, and
2 CONT Mrs. Henry Voght of Ellsworth; besides twenty-three grandchildren and
2 CONT nine
2 CONT great-grandchildren.
2 CONT
2 CONT The funeral was held last Wednesday afternoon, June 21, Rev. Auerswald
2 CONT of the
2 CONT Lutheran church officiating, and interment was made in the Nelson
2 CONT Cemetery.
