The movement was founded at Schwarzenau, Germany, in 1708, under the leadership of 2 CONT Alexander Mack (1679-1735), in protest against formalized established churches. The name Dunker came from the baptismal practice of triple immersion. Persecution soon drove the Brethren to flee to America, where most settled in Pennsylvania 2 CONT between 1719 and 1729.
