1 NOTE    James Adams Hayne, known as Adams, attended The Citadel and the 
2 CONT University of South Carolina before graduating from the University of 
2 CONT Virginia and the Medical College of South Carolina. He set up practice in 
2 CONT Blackstocks, where he met and married Fanny Thorn in 1897. In 1898, while 
2 CONT she was pregnant with Theodore, he volunteered as a private for the 
2 CONT Spanish-American War. He was eventually assigned to the hospital at 
2 CONT Chicamauga. He returned to Blackstocks, then signed on with the Public 
2 CONT Health Service. After an initial assignment in Washington, DC, he was 
2 CONT sent to Panama to work with General Gorgas on the Canal. He then served 
2 CONT as a Medical Officer with the Army (Cavalry) at Fort Assiniboine, Montana 
2 CONT and Fort Russell, Wyoming. In 1911, he was elected State Health Officer 
2 CONT of South Carolina and resigned his commission. He served as Director of 
2 CONT the State Board of Health until 1944, the as Director of Public Health 
2 CONT Education until 1950, when he retired.

1 NOTE Dr. John Douglass was born in Salem County, South Carolina and graduated 
2 CONT from Medical School at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia  in 
2 CONT 1805. He returned to South Carolina to practice, and was renowned for his 
2 CONT early brain surgery. He was the first to successfully remove a kidney. 
2 CONT John Douglass was elected to the South Carolina House and Senate, and 
2 CONT served as a delegate to the Nullification Convention of 1822-23. All four 
2 CONT of his sons became physicians. John, the eldest, died in 1855, but the 
2 CONT father and all three surviving sons served during the Civil War. Tommie 
2 CONT was captured and imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio; Wade was killed at 
2 CONT Wilcox Station, near Petersburg; and Wes came through unhurt. 
2 CONT Dr. Douglass married Mary Letherd Lunsford, the only child of Swanson 
2 CONT Lunsford of Virginia. Swanson Lunsford came South as a Captain in Lee's 
2 CONT Legion during the Revolution. He is buried on the State House grounds in 
2 CONT Columbia.

2 CONT "As early as 1836 Dr. John Douglass, of Chester, S.C., trephined for 
2 CONT epilepsy in a lad 12 years old, the result of a blow on the head- the 
2 CONT convulsions stopped and returned later. In 1839 he trephined a boy aged 
2 CONT 16 for mental derangement, the result of a blow on the head fifteen years 
2 CONT before. The relief in this case was permanent. In 1847 he again operated 
2 CONT for convulsions with entire relief.  .  .  .  Dr Douglass consequently 
2 CONT deserves to be ranked among the first of those who trephined for the cure 
2 CONT of this disease, not only in South Carolina, but in America, and as such 
2 CONT deserves great credit, which has not hitherto been accorded to him."

1 NOTE     "George Wade was one of the earliest citizens of Columbia. He had 
2 CONT been born in North Carolina and had moved to Lancaster County, from which 
2 CONT section he had entered the Revolution as captain of a company. In 
2 CONT Columbia he became owner of many squares of land, especially in the 
2 CONT southwestern section; his home is said to have been near the northwest 
2 CONT corner of Main and Green Streets. He was one of the incorporators of the 
2 CONT Columbia Male academy and of the Presbyterian church and in 1797 one of 
2 CONT the town commissioners. His wife, Mary McDonald, died August 22, 1779. He 
2 CONT married again Mrs. Martha Center, widow of Nathan Center (died in 1783), 
2 CONT a sister of Col. Thomas Taylor. When he died in 1824 he was buried, it is 
2 CONT said, in the Taylor graveyard; his grave is unmarked." History of

2 CONT    George Wade was born in North Carolina in Granville County on Shoco 
2 CONT Creek, on the 29th of May 1747. His father moved to South Carolina and 
2 CONT settled on Lynches Creek in the first of the year 1754. Here he was 
2 CONT raised and resided most of his life until he married the eldest daughter 
2 CONT of Daniel McDonald, Mary (Polly) which was on the 18th of November 1766. 
2 CONT He lived with her until the 22nd August 1779 when she departed this life. 
2 CONT Then he remained single until the 28th October 1784, when he married 
2 CONT Martha Center, the widow of Nathan Center. Lived with her until the 13th 
2 CONT Jan. 1816, when she departed this life.
2 CONT    When first married was 19 years, 5 months, 19 days old. Lived with 
2 CONT first wife 12 years 3 months & 3 days, had 3 sons and 2 daughters. Was a 
2 CONT widower 5 years 3 months and 7 days, and then married the 2nd wife, had

2 CONT           "Dr. William Thorne who lived north of Winnsboro on the road to 
2 CONT Blackstock, SC, Fairfield County, was the son of Capt. Charles Thorne and 
2 CONT grandson of Capt. Thomas Thorne of the Revolutionary War, born in 1735 
2 CONT died 1820 and his wife Mary Williams April 26, 1749- April 6, 1847. Capt. 
2 CONT Thomas Thorne was born in Mecklenburg, Va. then went to Warren County, 
2 CONT N.C. and thence to S.C. as shown by the 1790 census. He owned vast acres 
2 CONT of land at what is now Great Falls, Chester County. The Fairfield branch 
2 CONT is Dr. Wm. Thorne and his sister Sarah Lundy  wife of James A. McCrorey. 
2 CONT They were children of Capt. Charles Thorne and his wife Delilah Gilliam 
2 CONT of Granville County, N.C. Dr. William Thorne, 12/28/1808 married Martha 
2 CONT Miller daughter of John McCrorey and Molly Peggy Turner. Their sons were 
2 CONT william Turner and John Charles Thorne. William Turner Thorne married 
2 CONT Frances Douglass daughter of John Douglass and his wife Mary Lethud

2 CONT Isaac William Hayne served as Attorney General of South Carolina from 
2 CONT 1848 until 1868. In January of 1861, he was sent by Governor Pickens as 
2 CONT Special Envoy to President Buchanan to negotiate the question of Fort 
2 CONT Sumter and  "to effect if possible an amicable and peaceful transfer of 
2 CONT the fort". Obviously, he was less than successful.  He also was the 
2 CONT person who read the Order of Secession at the Secession convention in

1 NOTE  Alicia Paulina Shubrick Trapier was a descendant of old Huguenot 
2 CONT families and of Charleston's most famous naval families, the Shubricks.

1 NOTE    William Edward Hayne was not quite five when his father was executed, 
2 CONT but remembered visiting him on his last night. William was elected 
2 CONT Comptroller of South Carolina in 1839. He married Eloisa Davidson 
2 CONT Brevard, known as a spectacular beauty, in 1806. They had six children, 
2 CONT including our ancestor Isaac William, before her death in 1820. William 
2 CONT then married his cousin, Elizabeth  Perroneau Hayne, and had eight more 
2 CONT children. The South Carolina Gazette of 20 July, 1765 carried a report of 
2 CONT William and Eloisa's marriage, and Salley's "Marriage Notices"  also 
2 CONT confirms the date.

1 NOTE Isaac Hayne served as an officer in the Colleton Regiment of SC Militia. 
2 CONT He was elected to the South Carolina Assembly in 1777, 1779, and 1780. 
2 CONT When Charleston fell to the British, Isaac Hayne visited the city for 
2 CONT medicine when his wife and several children had smallpox. He was coerced 
2 CONT into signing a parole, in which he agreed not to bear arms against the 
2 CONT British, in order to be permitted to return to his family. He was later 
2 CONT captured under arms and hanged.  "The Execution of Isaac Hayne", by David 
2 CONT K. Bowen from Sandlapper Press, and "The Execution of Colonel Isaac 
2 CONT Hayne" by Robert Y. Hayne in Southern Review I (1828) pp 75-82 address 
2 CONT this incident. Isaac Hayne is buried near the site of his home, Hayne 
2 CONT Hall, just off highway 63 between Jacksonborough and Walterboro. There is 
2 CONT a sign on the highway and a monument at the grave.

2 CONT    "Thomas Shubrick was commissioned by Congress, 1778, in the 5th S.C. 
2 CONT Regiment of the United States, raised for the defense of American 
2 CONT Liberty. He was presented with a medal by congress, with its thanks for 
2 CONT his gallantry in the Battle of Eutaw Springs. The medal is in the 
2 CONT possession of the family of Mrs Geo. Clymer, of Washington, DC. He died 
2 CONT at the age of 54 in consequences of the hardships which his devotion to 
2 CONT his country had occasioned.
2 CONT    From an old family paper, he attained the rank of "Major", from 
2 CONT another, the rank of "Colonel". He was Commissioner of Prisoners after 
2 CONT the capitulation of Charleston, SC, and relieved a number of his 
2 CONT Bretheren of the Army. (see Moultrie's Revolution in the Carolinas.)

2 CONT He served as a Captain in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment; as Brigade 
2 CONT Major to General Howe from May 1777 to September 1778; and as 
2 CONT Aide-de-Camp to General Greene in 1781. He was referred to as Colonel in 
2 CONT the award presentation.

2 CONT "According to tradition, Joel Adams ran away from home when he was very 
2 CONT young because of an intense dislike for his stepfather. Apparently he was 
2 CONT about eighteen years of age when he came to lower Richland County in 1768 
2 CONT and obtained a grant of land adjoining the property of William Weston. 
2 CONT Although lacking a fornmal education, Joel Adams was a very intelligent, 
2 CONT hardworking, courageous and ambitious man of the highest character. By 
2 CONT his own merits he amassed a fortune.
2 CONT    It is told that his courtship of Grace Weston was long and persistent. 
2 CONT So many times did she refuse him that he resolved never again to ask her 
2 CONT to marry. Nevertheless, one day while riding, his horse by habit turned 
2 CONT in to the Weston home, and Joel decided to try once more. They were 
2 CONT married, and lived a long and happy life together."

2 CONT "Joel's portarait represents him as stern-looking, yet not unkind, with 
2 CONT mingled determination and sincerity stamped on his countenance. He was 
2 CONT remarkable for his physical strength as well as his moral energies. His 
2 CONT sayings have been handed down, one being: 'You can close the door against 
2 CONT a thief, but you cannot bar a door against a liar.' There is also handed 
2 CONT down a feat of strength that reminds one of the ancient mile:
2 CONT    'On one occasion, when he was having his cattle branded, one of the 
2 CONT bulls became infuriated and put the rest of the attendants and spectators 
2 CONT to flight in terror for their lives. Joel, then sixty years old, seized 
2 CONT the animal by the horns, threw him on the ground and held him there until 
2 CONT the proper person could return and apply the brand.'
2 CONT    His well-built, handsomely finished residence was burned by Sherman's 
2 CONT army in 1865. It was the center of his large landed estate, and there, on 
2 CONT every Christmas for years before his death, it was his pleasure to 
2 CONT assemble all of his descendants and entertain them with lavish cheer."

2 CONT Aiken- (Special) - Mrs. Mary Preston Huey Foster, 70, widow of J. Harry 
2 CONT Foster, died at the Aiken County hospital Sunday morning following an 
2 CONT extended illness.
2 CONT    Mrs. Foster, a native of Winnsboro, had made her home in Aiken for the 
2 CONT past year with her son, Joseph H. Foster.
2 CONT    Funeral services were to be conducted at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon at 
2 CONT the graveside in West Side cemetery at Lancaster by the Rev. H.G. 
2 CONT Wardlaw, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Lancaster.
2 CONT    In addition to her son, Mrs. Foster is survived by one daughter, Mrs. 
2 CONT Mary Foster Brennen of Alaska; one brother, James Shaw Ketchin of 
2 CONT Winnsboro, and seven grandchildren.
2 CONT    Mrs. Foster was a daughter of the late Robert and Margaret Shaw Huey

2 CONT Officer during the Civil  War.  He rose from Private to Surgeon of

2 CONT surrender. He was buried as a Brigadier General, but there is no record 
2 CONT of his holding that rank.

2 CONT    "Between the years 1865-85, one of the best known men in the county 
2 CONT and village of Lancaster was Dr. Joe. An old-time family doctor, 
2 CONT physician, nurse, and friend, he was loved by one and all as he traveled 
2 CONT over the rutted dirt roads in his horse and buggy to the homes of the 
2 CONT sick.
2 CONT    Dr. Joseph Henry Foster was born April 20, 1835 at his father's 
2 CONT plantation home on the Catawba River in the Waxhaws section of Lancaster 
2 CONT County. He was the youngest child of John and Ann Kelsey Cantzon Foster, 
2 CONT and a grandson of Captain John Foster and his wife Ann Dunlop. The Foster 
2 CONT home had been built close to the river, sometime around 1752 when the 
2 CONT family came down from Pennsylvania, on the plantation now belonging to 
2 CONT the children of Anna Foster Moore. But, due to the prevalence of malaria 
2 CONT which had caused the deaths of a number of the older brothers and sisters 
2 CONT of Dr. Joe, a new home had been erected higher up on the old plantation. 
2 CONT This home site is on the Lancaster-Riverside highway where C.C. Hanson 
2 CONT now lives. The house was burned before 1900.
2 CONT    Dr. Joe and his brother, Captain John Cantzon Foster received their 
2 CONT first education in a neighborhood school, then were sent by their father 
2 CONT to Mt Zion Institute in Winnsboro to prepare for entrance into the 
2 CONT University of South Carolina. From the University both were graduated in 
2 CONT 1855. Joseph Henry then studied medicine in Charleston and in 1860 
2 CONT finished at the New Orleans School of Medicine.
2 CONT    Early in the spring of 1861, Dr. Foster volunteered with the Lancaster 
2 CONT Greys of the Confederate Army, and was with them on the S.C. coast and 
2 CONT later in Virginia. He was promoted to the full rank of Surgeon by order 
2 CONT of the Secretary of War of the Confederacy in 1862 and served with the 
2 CONT 5th S.C. Volunteers, under the command of General Coward, until the end 
2 CONT of the war. An obituary of him at the time of his death says "Dr. Foster 
2 CONT had but few equals in the Confederate service as a successful surgeon and 
2 CONT physician, and it not infrequently happened that he was detailed to do 
2 CONT brigade and division duty."
2 CONT    At the close of the war, Dr. Foster returned to his father's Waxhaw 
2 CONT home, which he inherited upon his father's death in 1867. In 1869, he was 
2 CONT married to Charlotte Brown, daughter of Daniel Washington and Elizabeth 
2 CONT Amanda Barnes Brown. In 1876, the couple moved down to the village of 
2 CONT Lancaster. Their home was on the corner of Dunlap and Catawba Streets, 
2 CONT later sold to Dr. G. F. Poovey, and now belonging to the county, the site 
2 CONT of the Public Welfare Building.
2 CONT    In addition to practicing medecine, Dr. Foster was interested in 
2 CONT agriculture in every form. He planted his farm in the Waxhaws and raised 
2 CONT cattle on land he had bought on Gills Creek, a good part of what is now 
2 CONT North Main. He grew fruit trees and always had a beautiful flower garden."
2 CONT    Dr. and Mrs. Foster had ten children, all but three growing to 
2 CONT adulthood. Three of his sons followed their father's profession, the 
2 CONT fourth was a Lancaster attorney.
2 CONT    Dr. Foster died May 23, 1885. Buried in the same plot of the old 
2 CONT Presbyterian Cemetery with him and his wife are three young children and 
2 CONT a son, Dr. Carl Foster, and the latter's wife. Dr. Carl Foster practiced 
2 CONT medicine many years in Columbia, S.C.. Also buried beside their parents 
2 CONT are two daughters well-remembered by many Lancastrians, Misses Eloise and 
2 CONT Gertrude Foster, who were beloved teachers in the Lancaster Public school 
2 CONT for many years. Two children are still living, Dr. Ralph Kelsey Foster 
2 CONT and Miss Caroline Foster, both of Columbia, S.C."Attended Medical College 
2 CONT of S.C. 1858-1859. His Preceptor was R.E. Wylie.
2 CONT Joe Foster was a physician in Lancaster County, and served as a Medical 
2 CONT Officer during the Civil  War.  He rose from Private to Surgeon of 
2 CONT Jenkins' Brigade, and was functioning as Division Surgeon at the 
2 CONT surrender. He was buried as a Brigadier General, but there is no record 
2 CONT of his holding that rank.

1 NOTE John Cantzon was christened John Charles Rene Jacques Cantzon. He arrived 
2 CONT in the Waxhaws area of Lancaster County, South Carolina sometime before 
2 CONT the Revolution. He was married to Sarah Dickey, was a practicing 
2 CONT physician known as "the French Doctor", and owned a considerable amount 
2 CONT of land.  After John Cantzon's death, Sarah married Daniel Harper. He was 
2 CONT killed by Regulators for Tory activities, and Sarah took most of her 
2 CONT children overseas.

1 NOTE Robert M. Huey was born in New York, according to the 1880 census. He 
2 CONT moved to Winnsboro, South Carolina after the Civil War and married 
2 CONT Margaret Shaw. He ran a general store there for many years, and they had 
2 CONT three children. The eldest, Maggie, died 19 March, 1882 at the age of 
2 CONT three, and is buried at Bethel ARP in Winnsboro. She choked on a piece of 
2 CONT candy while her parents were at church.  The 1880 census shows Robert and 
2 CONT Margaret living in Winnsboro with Margaret J. Shaw, his mother-in-law, 
2 CONT who was born in Ireland.  Mary Preston, known as Mamie, was born in 1881, 
2 CONT and Robert Cathcart was born in 1884.  Margaret died at about that time, 
2 CONT and Robert seems to have fallen apart.  His children were raised by  
2 CONT Margaret's sister Mary, who was married to Thomas Hoge Ketchin, at one 
2 CONT time mayor of Winnsboro. Robert went through all of his money, then 
2 CONT worked for several newspapers before he died in Columbia 29 July, 1892.  
2 CONT An obituary for G.L. Huey in the Fairfield News & Herald of 30 September, 
2 CONT 1885 refers to him as the brother of Robert M. Huey and the son of M.M. 
2 CONT Huey. Although both R.M. and Margaret were members of Bethel ARP Church 
2 CONT in Winnsboro, neither is buried there.

2 CONT Revolution under General Greene, and participated in the battles at Kings 
2 CONT Mountain, Eutaw Springs, and Guilford Courthouse. Mary Mobley Reese's DAR 
2 CONT application #226011 cites Thomas Thorn's service and her descendence from 
2 CONT him. "Revolutionary Soldiers of Catholic Presbyterian" by Mary Wylie 
2 CONT Strange contains considerable information on his descendants.

2 CONT "Thomas Thorn was born 1735 supposedly in Mecklinburg County, Virginia. 
2 CONT His place of residence during the Revolutionary War was Warren County, 
2 CONT N.C. according to the census of 1790. He afterward moved to Rocky Mount, 
2 CONT Chester County, S.C. where he died after 1800. His will dated Sept. 9, 
2 CONT 1815, with an inventory of the estate made in 1816 is in Chester County 
2 CONT Will Book F, 1816-17. He did not have a land grant.
2 CONT    According to Deed Book F page 82 Chester County, S.C. Jonathan 
2 CONT Hemphill sold to Thomas Thorn of S.C. Pinckney District (now Chester 
2 CONT County) January 1792, 250 acres of land. This was recorded August 7, 
2 CONT 1797. In Deed Book D, page 67, December 24, 1808, Thomas Thorne sold to 
2 CONT his son-in-law, Charles Wall, 105 acres on Rocky Creek "where I now live, 
2 CONT being a part of my plantation." He lived on or near Catawba River 
2 CONT according to Mill's map of 1825, which has a "Thorn's Mill".
2 CONT    Thomas Thorn was of English descent and an Episcopalian in Virginia. 
2 CONT In Chester County he found no church of that faith. He and his children 
2 CONT were buried in the family half-acres near their homes, as was the custom 
2 CONT at that time. Some later descendants are buried in the churchyard at 
2 CONT Catholic and a few are still members there.
2 CONT    Graham Sandifer,son of Thomas Thorn Sandifer, took down information 
2 CONT given by his father, who was born in 1818, and was living during the 
2 CONT lifetime of Thomas Thorn's wife. From this information it would seem that 
2 CONT Thomas Thorn not only served in the patriotic army but also under General 
2 CONT Greene and was at the Battles of Guilford's Court House, Eutaw Springs,

1 NOTE Paul Trapier Hayne entered Confederate Service at the age of seventeen in 
2 CONT 1863, enlisting in the Beaufort Artillery, then commanded by Captain H. 
2 CONT M. Stuart. He fought at Averasboro and Bentonville in North Carolina, and 
2 CONT was paroled at Greensboro. After teaching school in Georgia and spending 
2 CONT three years in New York City, he settled in Greenville, where he worked 
2 CONT as deputy clerk of the Federal Court.

2 CONT    Joseph Brevard, born 19 July 1766 in North Carolina, was the son of 
2 CONT John Brevard and Jane McWhorter. As a young boy, he served in the North 
2 CONT Carolina Continental Line and was commissioned a lieutenant in 1782. 
2 CONT Following the American Revolution, he moved to Camden, South Carolina. On 
2 CONT 11 February 1792 he was admitted to the bar and commenced the practice of 
2 CONT law; he was associated with William Falconer of Chesterfield. Brevard 
2 CONT also became a land-holder. Through grants he obtained 1,650 acres in 
2 CONT Camden District and 200 acres in Berkeley County. Writing his will in 
2 CONT September, 1821, he mentioned Nettleton plantation, Antrim plantation on 
2 CONT the Wateree River; undisclosed acreage on the Wateree, Twenty-five Mile 
2 CONT Creek, and Great Lynches Creek; four lots, a town house, and other houses 
2 CONT in Camden; and monetary bequests of $12,000. An inventory of his estate 
2 CONT included 126 slaves, a library of approximately 900 books, and 100 shares 
2 CONT of bank stock.
2 CONT    Public service began for Brevard in January 1789 when he was elected 
2 CONT sheriff for Camden District. He served in that post until 1 March 1791. 
2 CONT On 14 October 1791 he was appointed a commissioner for the Court of 
2 CONT Equity for the northern circuit. During the 1790s he also served as 
2 CONT county attorney for several counties, including Chesterfield, Darlington, 
2 CONT and Salem, and as recorder and legal advisor for Camden. Kershaw elected 
2 CONT Brevard to the House for the Twelfth (1796-1797) and Thirteenth 
2 CONT (1798-1799) General Assemblies. Elected to the state Senate by Lancaster 
2 CONT and Kershaw election district, he served in the Fourteenth General 
2 CONT Assembly (1800-1801). The legislature on 3 December 1801 elected him an 
2 CONT associate judge of the Court of General Sessions and Common Pleas; he 
2 CONT remained in that position until poor health forced his resignation in 
2 CONT December 1815. He was electe to the United States House of 
2 CONT Representatives by Camden District and served in the Sixteenth Congress 
2 CONT (1819-1821). He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati.

2 CONT    On 17 March 1793, Brevard married Rebecca Kershaw, daughter of Ely 
2 CONT Kershaw and Mary Cantey (b.1749). At least four children were born to 
2 CONT them: Alfred, Edward Carrington, Eugene Joseph, and Sarah Aurora (m. 
2 CONT Benjamin Thomas Elmore). Rebecca Kershaw Brevard predeceased her husband 
2 CONT circa June 1802. Joseph Brevard died 11 October 1821 in Camden and was 
2 CONT buried in an unmarked grave in the Quaker cemetery.
