Harry Renkirt, the owner of Martin Airport, Canton, Oh(our 2 CONT flight base), was on the phone talking with Claire Chennault in China 2 CONT (Flying Tiger Fame). He offered any and all of the students to Chennault 2 CONT if they volunteered. 2 CONT 2 CONT After graduating, my deferred draft status was over and I was unable to 2 CONT gain admitance to Medical School. I enlisted in the Army Air Corps and 2 CONT was sent to Pre Flight Training at Kelly Field, San Antonio Texas, and on 2 CONT to Primary Flight Training at Fort Stockton, Texas, and Basic training at 2 CONT San Angelo, Texas, and then Advanced Training at Mission McAllen, Texas. 2 CONT Russell graduated as a 2nd Lt. 2 CONT 2 CONT During Russell's 2 weeks leave to come home, he received a telegram from 2 CONT his C.O. to report to a vet. hospital for Rabies shots because their 2 CONT mascot police dog was suspect. His family doctor administered the shots 2 CONT (21 of them in the buttocks - 1 each day). 2 CONT 2 CONT Upon returning to Mission, he learned that all but 5 of his class had 2 CONT been shipped to Fighter school in Florida. Russell was assigned a Flight 2 CONT Instructor and sent to Garden City Army Air Base, Kansas, where he spent 2 CONT the next 2 years as an instructor in Basic Flight Training. He ended up 2 CONT at Eagle Pass, Texas. 2 CONT 2 CONT The commanding Officer at Eagle Pass was a Col. Bundy. He also owned 2 CONT most of the town. His word was God. Russell's stay was shorted after a 2 CONT dispute on rental housing, he was given orders to leave for Amarillo, 2 CONT Texas to train in the B29 Flight program where he spent the remaining Air 2 CONT Corp time. 2 CONT 2 CONT While in Amarillo, Russell spent time flying B-17's and in Denver, 2 CONT Colorado on B24's, and Randolph Field, San Antonio flying B29's and 2 CONT finally Allemagorde, New Mexico flying B29's. Russell was present the 2 CONT morning the first A-Bomb was detonated a short ways away at White Sands. 2 CONT 2 CONT After being discharged from the service in January, 1946, Russell 2 CONT returned to Painesville and applied for Medical School. While waiting 2 CONT for admitance, he worked at the Painesville Post Office for several 2 CONT years. 2 CONT 2 CONT When it seemed that medical school was out of the picture, he went to 2 CONT work for Glen L. Martin, Polyvinyl Chloride Plant. At Glen L. Martin, 2 CONT Russell started as a Chemical Technician and moved up to Chief Chemist. 2 CONT Glen L. Martin was then acuisited by The United States Rubber, and he 2 CONT continued as Chief Chemist and finally Quality Control Manager.
