My Grandmother, Elsie 1 CONC Agnes Hansen Shelor was 13 (the oldest daughter) at the time and 1 CONC remembers the long train ride as being "very dirty". Robert returned to 1 CONC Virginia sometime after and died in Patrick County. (My mother said he 1 CONC was not a very nice man, at least not to his wife, but he thought the 1 CONC world of my Grandmother Elsie and she of him.) 1 CONT 1 CONT Once in Iowa, she got a job as the Jacksonville telephone operator. Grandma Hansen was 1 CONC afraid she'd scare us (she believed in them also & they scared her!) but 1 CONC we loved it. I can only remember bits & pieces..the Mockingbird 1 CONC story...her father "seeing" General Lee riding down the lane indicating 1 CONC something (the war was over?)...Waking up to see her father rolling a 1 CONC ball of fire from their burning barn (it did burn)...and something about 1 CONC their wagon being stopped on a bridge by someone or something and...?If 1 CONC anyone heard these stories or others, please help me "fill in the blanks". 1 CONT 1 CONT She made the best oatmeal and she loved buttermilk. She also at the fat 1 CONC portion of meat. Said it was the best part. She was in very good health 1 CONC until her death.."rarely sick a day in her life" Grandma Hansen said. 1 CONT 1 CONT She always sat in the same kitchen chair and in the same chair in the 1 CONC living room. (Court Street) I loved to watch her take down her hair at 1 CONC nite. It was very long and she always wore it in a soft bun, not pulled 1 CONC tight to her head as some do. 1 CONT 1 CONT I remember her sister, Princeanna Barnard (Aunt Prince), visiting her in 1 CONC Harlan. She moved with her mother and 5 sisters to Jacksonville Township, 1 CONC Shelby County, Iowa in 1914 at the suggestion of her mother's brother, 1 CONC Robert Barnard as he lived here at the time. She was a teenager and had a 1 CONC "bow" in Virginia so I'm sure she was not happy with the move. She only 1 CONC went back to Virginia twice that I'm aware of. The first was in 1929 when 1 CONC she, her mother, her sister, Lizzie, and her young son Wayne went for a 1 CONC visit and again in 1972 when my mother surprized her with another visit. 1 CONC They had gone to Nashville to the Grand Ole Opry as planned but rather 1 CONC than return home, Mom told her they were going on to Virginia. This made 1 CONC her very happy as she thought she would never see her relatives again and 1 CONC she talked of that trip often. 1 CONT 1 CONT Her mother was a telephone operator for the Jacksonville area, working 1 CONC out of her home. The oldest of the six girls, including Grandma, were 1 CONC hired out to local farms. Grandma was working as a live-in house girl for 1 CONC Mr. & Mrs. Joe Woods of Irwin, Iowa when she met Grandpa. He had come to 1 CONC look at a horse of Mr. Woods just having gotten out of the service and 1 CONC WWI. They were married in Kirkman, Iowa. 1 CONT 1 CONT Grandma bore LuVerne & Norma Jean on the farm. Wayne was born at Grandma 1 CONC Shelor's home at Jacksonville as Grandma went into labor when they were 1 CONC there for Christmas. He was born December 26. 1 CONT 1 CONT She had her garden, and flowers, an orchard, her chickens, and 3 milking 1 CONC cows and she would also help Grandpa with other farm duties. She made 1 CONC most of their clothes, teaching my Mom to sew when she was a young girl. 1 CONC She churned her own butter, canned her fruits & vegetables & made 1 CONC everything from "scratch" as I'm sure most everyone did in those times 1 CONC but it still amazes me since I rarely ever cook at all! (My "source" on 1 CONC this fact is my husband, Dale, who is a far better cook than I'll ever 1 CONC be.) 1 CONT I remember her telling of having just finished "putting" up the seasons 1 CONC canning in the cellar when she heard a terrible crash. Sure enough, the 1 CONC shelving had given way and there lay all her hard work, as well as winter 1 CONC food supply, on the cellar floor. Life couldn't have been very easy back 1 CONC then. 1 CONT 1 CONT They also had a very hard time during "the depression" in the 1930's but 1 CONC they didn't lose the farm as so many did. Grandma said she saw Grandpa 1 CONC cry only once and it was during this time. 1 CONT 1 CONT Grandma was always a hard worker both on the farm and later when she 1 CONC moved to Harlan. Life was not always easy for her. We say she retired 1 CONC after working 20 years at the hospital but she accually started working 1 CONC when she was a teenager. 1 CONT 1 CONT She cared for Grandpa during his illness and this was also very difficult 1 CONC for her. I asked her once why she never remarried. "And go though that 1 CONC again!" she replied. 1 CONT 1 CONT After she died, she and Grandma Shelor, who was living with them on the 1 CONC farm by this time, moved "into town" (Court Street, Harlan, Iowa). 1 CONC Grandma & Grandpa had already bought a house in town before he died. She 1 CONC rented the farm, not selling the house until the 1980's and the land 1 CONC until right before she died. We would always take drives when we visited 1 CONC and they always included a pass by the farm and the lake. 1 CONT On one of our last drives, I saw a flock of orchard orioles feeding in 1 CONC some bushes by the lake. I stopped the car and pointed them out but she 1 CONC couldn't see them. Then she said, "Yes, I hear them" as the sound of 1 CONC their chirping reached her and she smiled. She always liked pretty 1 CONC things, like birds and flowers. 1 CONT 1 CONT People always said Grandma was a real lady and she was. She was a very 1 CONC pretty woman with her silvery white hair and she always took care in 1 CONC looking her best. She kept a very neat home and garden, nothing out of 1 CONC place. Her life revolved around her home and her family. 1 CONT 1 CONT A few of her daughter's (my mother) memories: 1 CONT "Mom always seemed to take life so seriously. It was fun to make her 1 CONC laugh - I don't think she did this very often. She, too, was a hard 1 CONC working woman & always wanted to be doing something. She loved to cook 1 CONC and entertain.
