2 CONT Cromwell came to Maryland in 1667.  William, one of the pioneers of Maryland,
2 CONT named a son Philip as well as naming one of his tracts of land Philip's Fancy.
2 CONT As to the claim of the family to Henry Cromwell, son of Oliver, it is noted
2 CONT that the given name of Henry is conspicuously absent in all lines of the
2 CONT Maryland Cromwells.  Francis B. Culver, an eminent genealogist, emphasizes this
2 CONT point some of his research and suggests that such a name as John, William,
2 CONT Richard, Philip, Joshua, and Edith were all associated with a family of
2 CONT Cromwells from Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England.  John Cromwell of this family
2 CONT whose wife was Edith, died in 1639, and records show that several of his sons
2 CONT settled in New England.  William and John Cromwell were transported to Maryland
2 CONT in 1667 by Henry Hosier, a merchant of Calvert Co., where they first settled
2 CONT before they moved to Patapsco.  In 1670, Hosier proved his rights to 1050 acres
2 CONT of land in transporting 21 persons, among whom are William and John Cromwell.
2 CONT In 1670, for a valuable consideration, George Yate assigned to William and John
2 CONT Cromwell 300 acres.  This conveyance of George Yate was patented to the
2 CONT Cromwells on 1 JULY 1671 under the name of Cromwell's Adventure.  So it would
2 CONT appear that after the year 1671, John and William Cromwell removed to the South
2 CONT Bank of the Patapsco.  There they began to clear land and to erect their
2 CONT dwellings. About 1680, the younger brother, Richard, and his sister, Edith came
2 CONT over from England.  Soon after, Edith married Christopher Gist and ultimately
2 CONT became the grandmother of Mordecai Gist, one of Maryland's heroes of the
2 CONT Revolutionary War.  William Cromwell probably did not marry until he settled in
2 CONT the South Patapsco Hundred of Baltimore CO. or sometime before 1677.  He
2 CONT married Elizabeth Traherne, who is believed to have been the daughter of George
2 CONT Traherne of Virginia.
1 NOTE !WILL: William Cromwell made his will on 19 JUNE 1680, leaving his estate to
2 CONT his wife and two minor children.  In 1682, William patented Philip's Fancy of
2 CONT 61 acres, which descended to William Cromwell Jr. William Jr. sold this tract
2 CONT in 1700.  The deed of conveyance read.  William Cromwell Jr. Gent., son of
2 CONT William Cromwell, Gent., the original grantee.  William Cromwell I died
2 CONT sometime in the early part of 1685 during which time a third son was born.  He
2 CONT bequeathed to his wife, Elizabeth, a life interest in the home plantation of
2 CONT 100 acres called "Cromwells Adventure." being a portion of a tract which was
2 CONT taken up jointly by him and his brother, John.  She was also to receive 100
2 CONT acres of Mascall's Hope during the minority of their son, William.  Upon the
2 CONT attachment of 17 years, William would receive Mascall's Hope and the dwelling

2 CONT 1667, according to his own statement.  He appears first in Calvert Co., but
2 CONT soon removed to Ann Arundel Co., taking up land on the south side of the
2 CONT Patapsco River, on the west side of Curtis Creek.  He possessed lands also in
2 CONT Old Baltimore Co., where he resided, being known as William Cromwell of
2 CONT "Baltimore Co."  According to the records, on 8 oCT 1679, "came William
2 CONT Cromwell of Baltimore CO., and proved his right to 50 acres of land for
2 CONT transporting himself into this Province to inhabit twelve years since." A land
2 CONT warrant was issued to him the same day (Annapolis, Warrant Book WC. No. 2,11).
2 CONT It appears, however, that on 4 JUNE 1670, one Henry Hosier of Calvert Co.,
2 CONT merchant, proved his rights to 1050 acres of land "for transporting into this
2 CONT Province to inhabit," twenty-one persons, among whom were William Cromwell and
2 CONT John Cromwell (Annapolis, L.O. XII. 554).  Again, on 11 MAR 1671, a certain
2 CONT Benoni Eaton claimed his rights to land for transporting into the Province
2 CONT eleven "servants", among whom was one Will: Cromwell (ibid. XVI. 439).  Benoni
2 CONT Eaton assigned his rights to George Robotham of Calvert Co. Benoni Eaton was a
2 CONT ship captain, a member of the English house of Benoni Eaton and Company
2 CONT (Annapolis, Provincial Court Records, MM. 602), and styles himself in his will,
2 CONT dated 1 JUNE 1675 and proved 31 MAY 1677, "Benoni Eaton of St. Mary Magdalen,
2 CONT Bermondsey" (VA. Mag. XIV. 88). In 1679, Deborah Eaton of "Rederith" near
2 CONT London, "mariner", is mentioned (Annapolis, Liber WRC-No. 1; 146, 155).  I am
2 CONT not aware that any relationship between this Benoni Eaton and the Eatons of New
2 CONT England has been suggested.  Savage mentions a Nathaniel Eaton (b.1609), of
2 CONT Cambridge, Mass., who fled to Virginia, but returned to New England.  He was a
2 CONT brother of Hon. Theophilus Eaton of New Haven, Conn., and had a son named
2 CONT Benoni Eaton, a Cambridge, Mass., man who married Rebecca ----, and died in
2 CONT 1690, according to Savage.  On 16 Dec. 1670, George Yate of Ann Arundel Co.,
2 CONT Marylandl, Deputy Surveyor, for a valuable consideration, etc., assigned to
2 CONT John Cromwell and William Cromwell, both of Calvert Co., planters, all his
2 CONT right, title, and interest to and in a certain warrant to the extent of 300
2 CONT acres of land, the same being part of a warrant for 615 acres granted to the
2 CONT said George Yate on 12 DEC 1670.  The aforesaid tract of 300 acres was patented
2 CONT by the Cromwells on 1 JULY 1671, under the name of the "Cromwells Adventure."
2 CONT It was situated on the south side of the Patapsco, on the west side of Curtis
2 CONT Creek, in Ann Arundel CO, being held of the Manor of Ann Arundel (Annapolis,
2 CONT Certificates and Patents XVI. 151: XIII. 80).  On 9 OCT. 1679, William Ball of
2 CONT Baltimore CO., who "proved his right to 50 acres of land for transporting
2 CONT himself into to inhabit seventeen years since, " assigned his warrant to
2 CONT William Cromwell, by virtue of which the land was granted to the latter under
2 CONT the name "Huntin Quarter", lying in old Baltimore Co., on the south side of
2 CONT Patapsco River, and west of Curtis Creek, " to be held of the Manor of
2 CONT Baltimore." On 20 FEB 1679 (o.s.), George Holland of Ann Arundel CO,, for a
2 CONT valuable consideration, assigned to William Cromwell of Baltimore Co., 34
2 CONT acres out of a warrant for 760 acres.  These two tracts of land, purchased and
2 CONT acquired by William Cromwell, together with the 50 acres granted him on 8 OCT
2 CONT 1679, on account of his own transportation, were combined to make up a larger
2 CONT tract of 134 acres, lis, Certs. and Pats. XX 319: Warrants WC. No.2; 11,48). In
2 CONT 1677, William Cromwell purchased "Mascall's Hope" (100 acres) from John
2 CONT Boring; "David's Fancy" (100 acres) from Rowland Thornburgh in 1680, and part
2 CONT of "South Canton" (84 acres) from Richard Cromwell, et al., in 1682 (Balt.
2 CONT County Deeds Ir-PP. 17, 50; IR-MM. 193). On 12 JAN 1681/2 "Philip's Fancy" (61
2 CONT acres) was granted to William Cromwell and surveyed to him 1 APRIL 1682 (Balt.
2 CONT Co Rent Rolls: Certifs. and Pats. XXI 499).  The latter tract was sold on 26
2 CONT DEC 1700, by William Cromwell, Jr. Gent, son of William Cromwell Gent., the
2 CONT original grantee (Balt. Co. Deeds HW-No. 2. 69). The name of William Cromwell
2 CONT occurs in the Annapolis "Testamentary Proceedings" of 1679, to wit: on 12 MAR
2 CONT 1678/9, George Parker of Calvert Co., prayed in a citation against William
2 CONT Cromwell and Nicholas Ruxton, both of Baltimore CO., "to render a true account
2 CONT of ye goods of Robert Wilson, late of the same county, deceased, which said
2 CONT citation was issued under ye seal, immediately for them to appear, 3 JUNE
2 CONT 1679."  Again, on 26 SEPT 1679, "came to William Cromwell of Baltimore Co., and
2 CONT shewed the Judge here that Richard Mascall, of ye same county, deceased
2 CONT intestate, and prayed that administration be unto the said Cromwell given."
2 CONT William Davis and William Ball were appointed to appraise the estate, and
2 CONT Thomas Long and William Ball were Cromwell's sureties (Lib. X. 365: XI.
2 CONT 89,198,212,315).  There appears to have been some sort of relationship or close
2 CONT friendship between the aforesaid William Ball, on the one hand, and William
2 CONT Cromwell and his wife Elizabeth Trahearne Cromwell on the other.  The former
2 CONT was a witness under Cromwell's will, probated in 1684, and one of the
2 CONT appraisers of his estate.  Ball died in 1685, and in his will dated 10 APRIL
2 CONT 1684, bequeathed personal property to Elizabeth Cromwell widow of William, and
2 CONT realty in entail to her son William Cromwell Jr. Richard Cromwell was a witness
2 CONT under  the will of William Ball (Balt. Co. Wills I.65). The Annapolis
2 CONT "Testamentary Proceedings" show that in 1685, Elizabeth Cromwell had become the
2 CONT wife of George Ashman. William Cromwell died in 1684.  His will was dated 19
2 CONT JUNE 1680, and filed with the Court on 1 MAY 1684.  He refers to "my executrix,
2 CONT by her maiden name Elizabeth Trahearne, now my dearest and loving wife," to
2 CONT whom he bequeaths a life interest in "Cromwell's Adventure," his dwelling
2 CONT plantation, with 100 acres adjoining called "Mascall's Hope." To his son
2 CONT William, a minor, he devises "Mascall's Hope" when he shall become "of age" and
2 CONT the dwelling plantation after his wife's decease.  To his son Thomas, he
2 CONT devises the land on the west side of the Curtis Creek called "Hunting Quarter,"
2 CONT 134 acres. He mentions his brother John Cromwell in the body of the will, and
2 CONT ina codicil  appoints his brother Richard Cromwell one of the "overseers" with
2 CONT John Willmot.  The witnesses under the will were William Ball, Thomas Clark,
2 CONT and Elizth. (EDITH ?) "GESTE" (Gist).  William Cromwell married Elizabeth
2 CONT Trahearne; perhaps, a second wife and, possibly, herself a widow.  She married,
2 CONT circa 1685, George Ashman (d.1699).  On 6 AUG 1706, the "additional account" of
2 CONT Thomas Cromwell, administrator of Elizabeth Ashman, deceased, who was executrix
2 CONT of George Ashman, was filed (Balt. Co. Admin. Accts., II 245).  William Ball,
2 CONT who died in 1685, refers in his will to his wife Mary, who had, probably,
2 CONT predeceased him.  Is it possible that she was the Mary Crumwell who was
2 CONT transported to Virginia in 1655?

2 CONT the emigrant, seems to be the subject of considerable controversy among
2 CONT genealogists.  Some believe that he died a benedict, but the best authorities
2 CONT declare that he married and became the father of Joshua Cromwell who is
2 CONT sometime credited as a second son born after William Cromwell, the emigrant
2 CONT made his will.  John Cromwell, the emigrant, died intestate perhaps after 1711;
2 CONT and as no administration of his estate exists, it is rather difficult to offer
2 CONT definite proof of his heirs.  If given names can be taken as a slender or near
2 CONT proof, Joshua Cromwell can be assumed a son.  The latter had an only child whom
2 CONT he named John, and the first name of John appeared throughout his succeeding
2 CONT generation, whereas it was somewhat lacking in other lines.  In 1681 John
2 CONT Cromwell, the emigrant received 80 pounds of tobacco for his services to the
2 CONT Province (Archives, vol. 7).  He was a taxpayer in the South Patapsco Hundred
2 CONT in 1699.  He probably was dead by 1714.

2 CONT     Richard Cromwell is mentioned as the brother of William Cromwell in the
2 CONT codicil to the latter's will, circa 1684, and was appointed, by the testator,
2 CONT one of the "overseers" in connection with the management of the estate
2 CONT (Baltimore Co. Wills I.72). He is referred to as "my brother" i.e.
2 CONT brother-in-law, in the will of Christopher Gist died in 1691, who had married
2 CONT Edith Cromwell.
2 CONT     The first record of the name of Richard Cromwell in Maryland appears a few
2 CONT years subsequent to the earliest mention of his brothers, William and John
2 CONT Cromwell.  This may be accounted for by the supposition that Richard was a
2 CONT younger brother, or that he arrived in the Province later, or both.  It is
2 CONT certain that he was of adult age in 1682, when he and Christopher Gist (Circa
2 CONT 1655-1691), acquired from Robert Clarkson, 245 acres of land called "South
2 CONT Canton," lying on the south side of the Patapsco River. In 1686-7, there was
2 CONT assigned to Richard Cromwell, out of a warrant granted to Thomas Lightfoot, a
2 CONT parcel of land called "Cromwell's Addition" 160 acres, adjoining "South
2 CONT Canton." (Culver 345).
2 CONT      Richard Cromwell was a witness under the will of his brother-in-law
2 CONT Christopher Gist, 17 FEB 1690-1, and he appears as administrator of one William
2 CONT Cole's estate in 1691 (Baltimore Co. Court Proc. F-No. 1, 94). In 1694-5,
2 CONT Richard Guest (GIST), "son of Richard and Edith Guest, late of Baltimore Co.,
2 CONT deceased, comes into Court, and consents to live with his uncle, Mr. Richard
2 CONT Cromwell," until he arrives at the age of 20 years (ibid G-No. 1, 379).
2 CONT      Under the Act passed 9 JUNE 1692, establishing the Church of England in
2 CONT the Province of Maryland, Richard Cromwell was appointed one of the six
2 CONT original vestryman of Old St. Paul's Parish, in Baltimore Co., as the following
2 CONT record shows:
2 CONT      September Court 1693:-"Wee the Vestrie men for Potapsco Hundred met
2 CONT together att the house of Major John Thomas (resolved) that att Pettete's Old
2 CONT Field was the most convenient Place for to Erect a Church, and also appointed
2 CONT John Gay to be Clerke of the Vestrie, Mr. Watkins, Absent.  And att another
2 CONT meeting the Last Saturday in August att Master Demondedie's (Dimondidier's) did
2 CONT confirme the Aforementioned proceedings, Mr. Watkins also absent." Signed
2 CONT George Ashman, John Ferry, Francis Watkins, Nicholas Corban, Richard Sampson,a
2 CONT nd Richard Cromwell.
2 CONT      At the March Court of Baltimore County, 1694-5, Thomas Lightfoot son of
2 CONT John and Ann Lightfoot, deceased, comes into Court and agrees to serve, "Mr.
2 CONT Richard Cromwell" until twenty years of age, provided that the said Cromwell
2 CONT take the estate of the said Thomas Lightfoot into his own hands, rendering an
2 CONT account of the same. So ordered (ibid. G-No. 1, 384).
2 CONT      Richard Cromwell appears in the list of Baltimore Co. "Taxables" of 1694,
2 CONT residing on the south side of the Patapsco Hundred, with the following
2 CONT "taxables" on his place: namely, Wm. Barber, Jno. Eaglestone, Jno. Robinson,
2 CONT Edw. Russell, and two slaves (ibid G-No. 1, 275). In 1696, he was one of the
2 CONT three Commissioners appointed on behalf of Baltimore Co. in connection with the
2 CONT matter of establishing the new boundary line between Baltimore and Anne Arundel
2 CONT Counties (Baltimore County Land Records IS-IK. 86). He was one of his Majesty's
2 CONT Justices in 1696, and was an incumbent of the same office in 1701 (MD. Arch.
2 CONT XX. 466: Annapolis, Prov. Court Proc. TL-No. 2, 322). (Page 346).
2 CONT      On 27 APRIL 1699, Richard Cromwell, Gent., for love and affection etc.,
2 CONT gives personal property to John and Jonas Williams, son of Jonathan Williams,
2 CONT and on 1 MAY 1699, he is a witness to a "deed of gift" from Elizabeth Gibson to
2 CONT her son Thomas Gibson (Balt. Co. Deeds, TR-RA. 343, 347). He was a trustee
2 CONT under the will of James Murray of Patapsco Neck (Md. Hist. Mag. II. 246), and
2 CONT on 30 SEPT 1707, administered upon the estate of Thomas Edmonds, at which date
2 CONT he "affirms" to the account filed (Balt. Co. Admin. Accts. II. 144). This
2 CONT affirmation does not, necessarily, prove that he was a Quaker, but may,
2 CONT perhaps, indicate that he had conscientious scruples regarding the taking of an
2 CONT oath.
2 CONT      Besides his land holdings already mentioned, there was surveyed to Richard

2 CONT Co., on the north side of the Patapsco, located on "Hunting Ridge." In 1699,
2 CONT Nicholas Fitzsimmons conveyed to Richard Cromwell 300 acres of land called
2 CONT "Cordwainer's Hall"; and in 1705, Richard Gist of Balt. Co., "Carpenter,"
2 CONT conveyed to Richard Cromwell of Balt. Co. Gent., the land called "Gist's Rest"
2 CONT (Balt. Co. Rent Rolls: Land Records).
2 CONT      In addition to the above mentioned lands, Richard Cromwell in 1707 "was
2 CONT possessed" of the following tracts:- "Utopia" (214 acres), surveyed 1670 to
2 CONT Robert Willson for 1320 acres; "Long Point" (250 acres) surveyed 1682 to David
2 CONT Jones; "Welcome" (100 acres) surveyed 1684 to Charles Gorsuch; "Maiden's Dairy"
2 CONT (248 acres) surveyed 1695 to Thomas Hooker (Balt. Co. Rent Rolls), and
2 CONT "Content" (150 acres) surveyed 1682 to George Slaughier, in Ann Arundel Co.
2 CONT (A.A. Co. Rent Rolls).
2 CONT      The will of Richard Cromwell is dated 17 AUG 1717, and was proved 23 SEPT
2 CONT 1717.  The original is still on file in the office of the Register of Wills, at
2 CONT Baltimore, Maryland.  He leaves personal property to his cousin, i.e. nephew
2 CONT Joshua Cromwell, to Margaret Rattenbury (his granddaughter) and, in the event
2 CONT of her death, to Hannah Rattenbury (sister of Margaret): also legacies to his
2 CONT mother-in-law, Besson, and to Edith Gist, daughter of his cousin "nephew"
2 CONT Richard Gist by Zipporah Murray, his wife: he bequeaths 30 pounds and a ring to
2 CONT his "Cousin" (Page 347) nephew Richard Gist, a ring to his brother-in-law James
2 CONT Phillips, and a ring to his cousin-nephew Colonel Thomas Cromwell: he leaves 10
2 CONT pounds to Isaac Laroque, and wearing apparel to Nicholas Besson.  To his eldest
2 CONT son Richard (non compos mentis) he gives one shilling, with provision for his
2 CONT proper maintenance: to his wife Elizabeth, and "youngest son" John, he leaves
2 CONT the entire estate to enjoy, equally; but if the wife shall marry, she is to
2 CONT receive her "third portion" and in the event of his son John's death, all is to
2 CONT go to Edith Gist, who is to care for the son Richard Cromwell aforesaid.  His
2 CONT wife Elizabeth, and "youngest" son John, were appointed executors.  The
2 CONT witnesse under the will were William Cromwell, James Jackson, and Jabez Murray
2 CONT (Balt. Co. Wills I. 144).
2 CONT      The Inventory of the estate, amounting to 1512.13.5 3/4, was filed 13 NOV
2 CONT 1717, and was approved by Thomas and Joshua Cromwell nephews as "next of kin"
2 CONT (Balt. Inventories V. 299). On 8 June 1719, the account of "Elizabeth and John
2 CONT Cromwell, executors of Richard Cromwell, late of Balt. Co., deceased," was
2 CONT rendered, wherein they charge themselves with the estate heretofore exhibited
2 CONT in the Prerogative Court, amounting in currency to 1512.13.5 3/4, and also with
2 CONT sterling money in England due the estate 389.8.4 or, in currency 519.4.5, and
2 CONT with tobacco made on the plantation amounting in currency to 169.19.8.
2 CONT Payments are credited as having been made to John Rattenbury, Margaret
2 CONT Rattenbury (on account of legacy to Margaret Besson), to Richard Gist and his
2 CONT daughter, to Joshua Cromwell and to Isaac Laroque (Balt. Co. Admin Accts. I.
2 CONT 158).  Elizabeth Cromwell makes "affirmation" to the correctness of the
2 CONT aforesaid account, which may indicate that she was a Quaker, or at least had
2 CONT scruples concerning taking of an oath.
2 CONT      There is a probability that Richard Cromwell married more than once, for
2 CONT her refers in his will to a brother-in-law James Phillips.  As he also refers
2 CONT to his mother-in-law Besson i.e. Margaret Besson, wife of Thomas Besson, and
2 CONT daughter of George Saughier, through whom the tract of land, in Ann Arundel Co.
2 CONT called "Content", evidently fell to Richard Cromwell, it is apparent that his
2 CONT last wife, Elizabeth , who survived him, was a daughter of Thomas Besson. She
2 CONT was, doubtless, much younger than her husband (page 3480.

2 CONT continously until his death, being Presiding Magistrate in 1736; he represented

2 CONT son of John, was born undoubtedly in the South Patapsco Hundred, where his
2 CONT descendants continued to live many generations thereafter.  It is believed that
2 CONT he married Farnces Ingram, and although proof is lacking, it has yet to be
2 CONT disproved.  Furthermore, his son, John, named both a son and daughter Francis.
2 CONT Their children were 1. John Cromwell married Comfort Robosson 2. William
2 CONT Cromwell married Violetta Gist.  In 1714, Joshua and his cousin, William
2 CONT Cromwell, divided equally "Cromwell's Adventure" of 300 acres which had been
2 CONT granted jointly to John and William Cromwell, the pioneers.  The fact that
2 CONT Joshua was entitled to a half portion of this tract is also evidence that he
2 CONT was an heir of John.  In 1725 Joshua Cromwell mortgaged his share of 150 acres
2 CONT to Benjamin Tasker.  Joshua Cromwell in 1717 inherited L10 by the will of his
2 CONT Uncle Richard Cromwell.  At the inventory of his uncle's estate on Nov. 3,
2 CONT 1717, (page 606) he signed with Thomas Cromwell as the next of kin.  No record
2 CONT exists relative to the executorship or administration of his estate, but he was
2 CONT living as late as 1735, when he testified to the validity of the will of
2 CONT William Cromwell.

2 CONT John Cromwell, son of Joshua and Frances Ingram Cromwell, was born in the year
2 CONT 1711 in the South Patapsco Hundred of Baltimore County.  In 1763 he testified
2 CONT as being 37 years of age.  On December 1, 1738, he married Comfort, the
2 CONT daughter of Oneal and Martha Barnes Robosson.  The births of their nine
2 CONT children are found in Westminister Parish, where he was at one time register.
2 CONT Their children were 1. Frances Cromwell, born Sept. 27, 1739, married Henry
2 CONT Ashbam (Ashburn) 2. Oneal Cromwell, born Dec. 11, 1740, married Sarah Ashby
2 CONT (Ashley), Dec. 17, 1773.  Died A.A. Co., 1793, naming wife as sole legatee;
2 CONT brothers Joshua and Francis, executors; was seized of "Mountains of Wales". HIs

2 CONT On February 9, 1753, he conveyed to Nathan Hughes, Gent., the tract known as
2 CONT "Body's Adventure" which a certain John Cromwell purchased from Thomas Welch in
2 CONT 1717.  Comfort Cromwell, his wife, waived all dower rights.  He was a bondsman
2 CONT for his brother-in-law, Elijah Robosson, when the latter administrated on the
2 CONT estate of his father, Oneal Robosson. At the distribution on Dec. 12, 1770,
2 CONT Comfort Cromwell was one of the representatives.  On May 14, 1771, William
2 CONT Worthington, Gent., deeded to John Cromwell of Joshua, and Comfort his wife for
2 CONT consideration of L5 "Howard's Pasture", lying on the south side of the Magothy
2 CONT near the land of George Saughier.  After their decease the tract descended in
2 CONT fee to their (page 606) son, Oneal.  On March 4, 1771, he purchased from
2 CONT Charles Boone "Burle's Park" in the forks of Rock Creek.  His will was probated
2 CONT in Anne Arundel County in 1772.  His son, Oneal, was bequeathed a portion of
2 CONT "Burle's Park", as well as his son Joshua.  The residue of his estate was
2 CONT devised to his wife during life, then to all his children.  On April 21, 1774,
2 CONT his widow conveyed for L100 to Elijah Robosson a portion of "Burle's Park" in
2 CONT pursuance of the will of her husband, John Cromwell of Joshua. His widow lived
2 CONT until the latter part of 1777.  She willed the dwelling and plantation,
2 CONT "Burley's Park" to her son, John.  She devised her daughter, Rugh, L50, while
2 CONT the residue of the estate was directed to be divided among the following
2 CONT children--Oneal, Joshua, John, Francis, Frances Ashbam, Rachel Cromwell, and
2 CONT the children of her deceased daughter, Margaret Hancock (page 607).

2 CONT the late Wilson Miles Cary of Baltimore.  Some doubt, however, has been
2 CONT expressed by recent genealogists.  William Cromwell married first Violetta,
2 CONT born 4 July, 1731, the daughter of Christopher and Sarah Howard Gist. They had
2 CONT issue: 1. Joseph Howard Cromwell, born 12 NOV 1753, married Keziah Gostwick
2 CONT Stansbury. 2. Violetta Cromwell, died young.  His first wife died sometime
2 CONT before 16 JUNE 1768, for on that date he married Elizabeth Raven Risteau in St.
2 CONT John and George Parish of Baltimore County.  She was the daughter of Abraham
2 CONT Raven of Baltimore County, but more recently the widow of Isaac Risteau.  The
2 CONT latter had died in Baltimore County during 1764, naming in his will his wife,

2 CONT Fellowship" to ----Risteau, Gent.  On March 16, 1776, William Cromwell and
2 CONT Elizabeth his wife conveyed for love of their son John Talbott Risteau "Coxe's
2 CONT Fancy", "Luke's Addition", and "Richardson's Neglect".  At the beginning of the
2 CONT Revolution, William Cromwell represented Gunpowder Hundred of Baltimore County
2 CONT on the Committee of Observation (Scharf's Hist. of Balt. page 71).  According
2 CONT to the tax list of 1783, he was living in Upper Gunpowder River Hundred and was
2 CONT seized of "Cox's Fancy", "Richardson's Neglect", "Lucky Addition" and "Towson's
2 CONT Chance".  His daughter, Elizabeth Raven Cromwell, in 1796 deeded "White Oak
2 CONT Swamp" to Solomon Hillen.  On May 2, 1798, described as "William Cromwell of
2 CONT Baltimore Town" he conveyed to Charles Ridgely of Hampton 36 acres of
2 CONT "Richardson's Neglect", which Benjamin Griffith on April 30, 1773, had deeded
2 CONT to William Cromwell.  His wife, unnamed, waived her dower rights (page 608).

2 CONT (Archives, vol. 11).  The will of Joshua Cromwell was dated April 13, 1793, and
2 CONT was proved at Annapolis on July 13, 1793.  He bequeathed his wife, Helen, the
2 CONT entire estate real and personal, the proceeds of which were to be used to raise
2 CONT and educate his children.  At her death or remarriage the estate was divided
2 CONT among the surviving children (page 609).

2 CONT Gray, died in 1805, and by her will named her grandchildren, John and Sarah

2 CONT was appointed a First Lt. of the Severn Battalion of Militia on March 2, 1778,
2 CONT and promoted to Captain in place of Joseph Maccubin, resigned.  He had left the
2 CONT army by Oct. 14, 1781, for on that date Caleb Hazle was commissioned a captain
2 CONT in his place (Archives, vols. 21, 43, 48) (page 609). On December 18, 1794,
2 CONT Francis Cromwell sold to Nathan Williams, Henry Ridgely, John Cromwell, William
2 CONT Maccubin, Zachariah Ashby, Richard Boone, and Charles Waters one acre of land
2 CONT at the head of Rock Creek for the purpose of erecting a Methodist Meeting
2 CONT House.  This was the beginning of the Magothy Meeting House or the Magothy
2 CONT Methodist Church as it is called today.  On August 31, 1801, Francis Cromwell
2 CONT and Elizabeth his wife, John Ashbam and Anne his wife, and Rebecca Gray deeded
2 CONT to Peregrine Ridgely "Murphy's Choice" lying on the north side of the Magothy
2 CONT at Gray's Creek.  Francis Cromwell was appointed trustee for the estates of
2 CONT George Conaway and Henry Ridgely.  He maintained his seat on Mountain Road, not
2 CONT far from Gibson Island.  The foundation of his stone dwelling still remains and
2 CONT not far distant is the family burying ground.  Besides his estate in Anne
2 CONT Arundel County, he owned a great deal of land in Baltimore Town.  His first
2 CONT wife died sometime before Dec. 24, 1802, for on that date he obtained license
2 CONT in Balt. Co. to marry Patience Stansbury--Jacob-Hall-Gaither. No issues
2 CONT resulted.  It is said that Francis Cromwell seriously objected to his daughter
2 CONT marrying a Cheney.  Later, when the once disobedient daughter learned that her
2 CONT father had provided but little for her in his will, she became enraged and
2 CONT hoped that no another male heir would be born to carry on the name of Cromwell.
2 CONT The grandchildren born after that date were all girls.  On Sept. 16, 1809,
2 CONT Francis Cromwell, with his wife Patience who waived her dower rights, sold
2 CONT "Cromwell's Inheritance" on the east side of Rock Creek to Cockey Pumphrey.  On
2 CONT August 30, 1810, they both conveyed "Gray's Lands" to William Jubb. During the
2 CONT same year he and his wife Patience deeded to Oneal Robosson for L500 "Happy
2 CONT Choice", "Cox's Forrest", and "Jacob's Fortune". The body of the deed read
2 CONT "whereas Richard Jacob late of Anne Arundel County, deceased, did by his will
2 CONT appoint Dorsey Jacob of Anne Arundel County now deceased and Patience Jacob
2 CONT wife of the said Richard now Cromwell Executors....".  Patience, having buried
2 CONT three husbands, did not live to bury her fourth.  She died sometime after 1810
2 CONT and before Feb. 1, 1813, when letters of administration were issued to
2 CONT Zachariah Cromwell as administrator of his father's estate.  Elijah Williams an
2 CONT Stephen Hancock were bondsmen.  Additional letters were issued on March 1,
2 CONT 1816, to Jacob Williams, and Francis Hancock as the administrators.  It was
2 CONT Jacob Williams who rendered the final settlement in 1818, when it was
2 CONT distributed among the three daughters--Sarah Johnson, Elizabeth Jones, and Mary
2 CONT Cromwell(page 610).  In 1813, after the death of Captain Cromwell, a suit was
2 CONT presented in chancery over three tracts of land known as "Gibb's Folly",
2 CONT "Huckleberry Forest", and "The Pond", all lying on the west side of the
2 CONT Magothy.  Francis Cromwell had purchased these tracts for $2650 at public
2 CONT auction, which had previously been conveyed to George Wells Jr., of Baltimore
2 CONT County, by Elijah Robosson, of Anne Arundel County, with the exception of 12
2 CONT acres which had been reserved as a burying ground and where the parents of
2 CONT Elijah Robosson were interred.  The action was brought by Jesse and Hannah
2 CONT Wells Fearson, and Josiah and Ichosaba Wells Brown--The women being the sisters
2 CONT and only heirs of George Wells Jr. (page 611).

2 CONT on Dec. 17, 1799.  This tract of 430 acres had been purchased by Oneal Cromwell
2 CONT in 1776 from William Worthington of Annapolis.  John Cromwell died intestate in
2 CONT Anne Arundel County.  The inventory of his estate was made on April 22, 1809,
2 CONT with his eldest son, William Cromwell, as the administrator.  Francis Cromwell
2 CONT and Joshua Cromwell signed as the nearest of kin, with John Davis and Thomas
2 CONT Cromwell, as the sureties for the administrator.  The final balance on the
2 CONT estate of John Cromwell was declared on March 24, 1810, at which time it was
2 CONT divided among the nine representatives (page 611).  "Burle's Park" which had
2 CONT been John Cromwell's share of his father's estate figured in several
2 CONT tranactions by his heirs.  In 1810, William sold his portion to Elijah
2 CONT Williams.  On Sept. 11, 1815, Michael conveyed his share to Elijah Williams.
2 CONT Part of the deed read "...whereas John Cromwell of Anne Arundel County died
2 CONT intestate leaving "Burley's Park" of 100 acres which has descended to his heirs
2 CONT Joseph Cromwell, Ann Wilson, Sarah Cromwell, Michael Cromwell, Levy Cromwell,

2 CONT the daughter of Jesse and Patience Stansbury Hall, on April 2, 1809. Their
2 CONT children were 1. Elizabeth Cromwell, born April 7, 1810, married Samuel W.
2 CONT Whitelock, license Sept. 12, 1826 Baltimore Co. 2. Patience Cromwell, born 23
2 CONT NOV 1811, died spinster, her estate distributed by Francis Hancock, 1828 3.
2 CONT Margaret Cromwell, born April 19, 1813 4. Harriet Cromwell, born NOV 19, 1814,
2 CONT married Benjamin Robinson.  Zachariah Cromwell died intestate in 1817.  His
2 CONT widow on June 12, 1817, married his cousin, Oneal Cromwell. q.v.  The estate of
2 CONT Zachariah Cromwell was settled on July 18, 1827, by Francis Hancock,(page 613)
2 CONT the administrator and distributed one-third to Oneal Cromwell in right of his
2 CONT wife, and one-fourth to each of his four children.  Zachariah Cromwell died
2 CONT before he completed the administration of his father's estate, thereby the
2 CONT administration passed to Jacob Williams and Francis Hancock (page 614).

2 CONT Westminister Parish.  On June 4, 1814, he sold to Jacob Williams "Gibb's His
2 CONT Folly" and "Huckleberry Forrest" which he claimed by rights of his father,
2 CONT Francis Cromwell, who purchased them with Bryan Williams from Jesse Fearson.
2 CONT He married Rhoda Ridgely on Jan. 28, 1813.  Their children were 1. Helen
2 CONT Cromwell or Eleanor Cromwell? 2. Patience Cromwell married Joseph Armiger.
2 CONT License 27 JUNE 1837, Baltimore Co.  On April 24, 1819, John Cromwell and Rhoda
2 CONT his wife, "formerly Rhoda Ridgely daughter of Mordecai", sold to Charles Waters
2 CONT "Bond's Forest" at the head of Stony Creek, and also "Ninth Discovery Enlarged"
2 CONT the latter having been conveyed on March 22, 1802 by "William Murray and
2 CONT Harriet, his wife to John Williams of John, William Ridgely, and Rhoda Ridgely,
2 CONT the heirs of Mordecai Ridgely."  The will of John Cromwell was dated 3 MAY
2 CONT 1823, and was proved August 24, 1824, in Anne Arundel County.  One third of the
2 CONT estate was bequeathed to his wife, Rhoda, and the residue to his two daughters,
2 CONT Helen and Patience.  His cousin, Francis Hancock, was named as executor.  His
2 CONT widow married Robert Boone (q.v.), and died in 1847, naming her Cromwell
2 CONT grandchildren--Rhoda Lucretia Armiger, Josiah Cromwell Armiger, and Patience
2 CONT Eleanor Armiger (page 614).

2 CONT (17??-1834), son of Joshua Cromwell and Helen Gray, was born in Westminister
2 CONT Parish.  On June 12, 1817, he married Sarah, the daughter of Jesse and Patience
2 CONT Stansbury Hall, and the widow of his cousin, Zachariah Cromwell.  Their
2 CONT child was 1. Henrietta Almira Cromwell.  On Oct. 30, 1819, Oneal Cromwell, then
2 CONT of Anne Arundel County, conveyed to Margaret Pumphrey a portion of "Burley's
2 CONT Park" which he had purchased from John and Thomas Cromwell in 1812.  Sarah
2 CONT Hall, his wife, acknowledged the transfer.  Oneal Cromwell subsequently removed
2 CONT to Baltimore City, and there his will was probated on May 14, 1834.  He devised
2 CONT his widow, Sarah, the entire estate during life, then to his daughter Henrietta
2 CONT Almira.  In the event that the daughter died without issues then to his
2 CONT step-daughter Harriet Robinson, thence to the children of his sister, Rachel
2 CONT Williams, that is--Bryan, Hester, Ann Rachel, Henry Alfred, and Francis Wesley
2 CONT Williams.  If his widow died before his daughter obtained her majority then she
2 CONT were to be placed under the guardianship of Benjamin Robinson (page 613).
