2 CONT Hospital in Toppenish.  He was born on 16 of AUG 1910, in Monroe Co., Tenn., to
2 CONT William and Mintie (Rucker) Ervin. He worked in fruit warehouses until 1950
2 CONT when he went  to work as a deputy marshal in Zillah. He worked for the City of
2 CONT Zillah as deputy marshall for nine years. Following that he worked for the
2 CONT Toppenish  Police Department from 1959 to 1971, when he retired due to illness.
2 CONT Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of Toppenish, six daughters, Bobby Ring of
2 CONT Toppenish, Judy O'Rourke, Kathy Ostrander and Betty Frost, all of Yakima,
2 CONT Sandra Pauley of Walkersville, Maryland, and Flora Lee Wald of Glendale,
2 CONT California; four sons, Lloyd Ervin of Toppenish, Bill Ervin of Zillah, George
2 CONT Ervin of Yakima, and Howard Ervin of Seattle; two brothers, Wayne and James
2 CONT Ervin, both of Yakima; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

2 CONT George Woitt and Katherine Reiswig were united in marriage in 1903 in Walter,
2 CONT Russia.  They had one son who died at two years of age.  George was orphaned at
2 CONT an early age.  He had two brothers, Jake, the oldest, George, and then John.
2 CONT They were raised by relatives.  George had little schooling in the German
2 CONT language and no English.  George's job was herding hogs.  When George was old
2 CONT enough to serve in the Army, he was drafted for the Japanese and Russian War.
2 CONT The conflict was of short duration and his duty was to polish the officer's
2 CONT shoes and run errands.  Katherine had one younger sister and brother.  Six
2 CONT weeks prior to immigrating to America in 1907, they had a daughter named Nina
2 CONT Marie.  The trip was by steerage and many of the passengers were sick.  They
2 CONT both received citizenship papers in their early years.  Katie is short for
2 CONT Katherine.  When she was signing her papers it was too difficult for her to
2 CONT write her full name.  She had some schooling in the German language.  They
2 CONT settled in Odessa, Washington.  His foster father, Wendell Woitt, set up
2 CONT housekeeping for George and his family.  George worked for farmers on wheat
2 CONT ranches and also worked building brick chimneys and plastering walls and
2 CONT ceilings.  Later, he worked building sidewalks.  A second daughter, Martha, was
2 CONT born in 1909 and then two sons, Solly in 1911, and Alfred in 1914.  A third
2 CONT daughter, Helen, was born in 1921.  In spring of 1918, the family went to
2 CONT Wapato, Washington, to work one season in the sugar beets for Williams, this
2 CONT was three mile N.E. of Harrah in the Yakima Valley, in the fall they decided to
2 CONT stay and make their home.  George's foster father bought a 10 acre orchard for
2 CONT $9000 at the corner of Ashue and Jones Road from Jones, who was a banker.  The
2 CONT land was planted in 3 acres of peaches, 1 acre of pears, and the rest was in
2 CONT apples.  The two-bedroomed house eventually had two rooms added by George.
2 CONT Farming brought in good crops and the debt was repaid in the first two years.
2 CONT In the 1930's the ranch was sold and they moved into town on West 6th St.,
2 CONT Wapato.  The home was close to school, six blocks from town and church.  They
2 CONT owned a car, but often walked.  They were members of the Lutheran Church until
2 CONT 1926 when they joined the Congregation Church which their friends attend, and
2 CONT they liked their prayer group.  George helped build the new church building
2 CONT which is still standing at the corner of East 3rd Street.  The Woitts were a
2 CONT happy family.  Katie was diabetic for many years.  She died at age 71 in 1956
2 CONT at Toppenish Hospital.  George spent his last few years in a nursing home; he
2 CONT suffered a heart attack at age 88 and died in the St. Elizabeth hospital in
2 CONT Yakima in 1964.  Their daughter, Marie Kissler, died in November 1960 and
2 CONT daughter Helen Ashby died August 13, 1975.  George was born 25 MAY 1875 and
2 CONT Katherine on FEB 16, 1885.

2 CONT Prineville, Oregon, died JULY 10 at the family ranch east of Prineville.  Mr.
2 CONT Woitt was raised and educated in Wapato.  He farmed for several years before he
2 CONT entered the U.S. Army in 1939, retiring as a major in 1959. Survivors include
2 CONT his wife, Marie Woitt of Prineville; five daughters, Freddie Lee Miller of
2 CONT Norco, California, Kathy Ann Byrd of Prineville, Toni Rose Dayak of Tracy,

2 CONT born 26 APRIL 1909 at Odessa, Washington to George and Katie (Reiswig) Woitt.
2 CONT The family came to the Wapato area in 1918, where she was raised and educated.
2 CONT She married Gus Kissler in Wapato on Jan. 17, 1927.  The couple farmed in the
2 CONT Wapato area for many years.  Martha was a member of the Pilgrim Congregational
2 CONT Church of Wapato.  In later years Martha attended the First Baptist Church of
2 CONT Wapato.  Martha worked thirty five years as a fruit packer and ten years at
2 CONT Wapato Fruit Products until retiring.  Martha is survived by one son Larry
2 CONT Kissler of Citrus Heights, California, two grandchildren, Kristen Catena of Ft.
2 CONT Bragg, North Carolina, Eric Kissler of Danville, California, three great
2 CONT granddaughters; one brother Alfred Woitt of Yakima. Martha was preceded in
2 CONT death by her husband on 20 JULY 1985 and two sisters and one brother.  Funeral
2 CONT services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 18, 1995 at Merritt Funeral
2 CONT Home Chapel in Wapato.  Burial will be in the Reservation Community Memorial
2 CONT Park west of Wapato.

1 NOTE !NOTE: Jacob Woitt.  He was born in Walter, Russia on March 21, 1872, he was
2 CONT the oldest of three boys who were orphaned at an early age. They were raised by
2 CONT Wendall Woitt, their foster father.  Jacob married Anna Margaret Schmidt, she
2 CONT was from the village Frank, which was close by.  She was born in the year 1875.
2 CONT Jacob and Anna immigrated to the U.S. in 1901.  While enroute and on board
2 CONT ship, their first child was born, Jacob, named after his father.  The port of
2 CONT entry to America was New York, their destination was Odessa, Washington.
2 CONT Working and farming was done on the wheat ranches, they lived in Lincoln County
2 CONT as well as Adams County.  To them were born six more children before they moved
2 CONT to the Yakima Valley: Henry, Feb. 22, 1904; Pauline, Feb. 1 1906; Annie, March
2 CONT 17, 1908; Lydia, 26 MAY 1910, she married William Hert of Wapato, she died
2 CONT November 8, 1929; Edward, born 24 AUG 1912; and another bab girl died in
2 CONT infancy in 1916.  The year they came to the valley was 1918, settling in the
2 CONT lower valley at Wapato.  They worked as farmers.  They had another daughter,
2 CONT Esther, born Dec. 9, 1918.  They were affiliated with the Lutheran Church,
2 CONT eventually transferring to the Pilgrim Congregational Church in Wapato.  Anna
2 CONT was an active participant with the Pilgrim Daughters Society, contributing many
2 CONT beautiful handmade items, knitting and crocheting.  At the age of 71, Jacob
2 CONT died on 18 NOV 1943. Anna lived to be 84 years of age, she died in March of
2 CONT 1959.  Their oldest son, Jacob, is also deceased.  by Pauline Woitt Hert. This
2 CONT is from the book "Germans From Russia In The Yakima Valley Prior to 1940".

2 CONT Valley Memorial Hospital. He was born on a ship en route to England. His family
2 CONT came to the United States, living in Odessa, Washington, in 1901. Mr. Woitt
2 CONT came to Yakima in 1918. After retirement, Mr. Woitt was an employee of sthe
2 CONT state Racing Commission in Yakima. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Daisy

2 CONT WOITT WAS WELL-KNOWN AT BIG Y. Jacob (Jake) Woitt, who died Sunday at the age
2 CONT of 72 years of age, was a well-known figure at Yakima Meadows, where he had
2 CONT been employed in a variety of jobs since the race track opened 14 years ago.
2 CONT He was a lifetime horseman and for many years a rodeo cowboy.  Also a long-time
2 CONT employee of the Central Washington Fair Association, he was also
2 CONT well-remembered by the rodeo cowboys and the young people who used the barns
2 CONT for horse shows. Some may remember Woitt from some years back as the owner of
2 CONT Old Red, the Arabin horse that was used by Gary Cooper in the movie, "THE
2 CONT HANGING TREE," filmed in the Yakima Valley.  Jake had broken Old Red to riding
2 CONT after the animal had run wild on an Arizona ranch for 11 years. Then he had
2 CONT gone into the big barn fire at the Toppenish rodeo grounds to rescue the horse,
2 CONT winding up in the hospital for smoke inhalation.

2 CONT died Monday morning 10 DEC 1990 at Kadlec Hospital in Richland.  Mr. Woitt was
2 CONT born to Jacob and Anna Margaret Schmidt Woitt.  He was raised and educated in
2 CONT the Odessa area.  He and his family came to the Yakima Valley in 1915 where
2 CONT they were engaged in farming for many years.  He married Minnie Hazel Peilecke
2 CONT in Mabton on 27 JUNE 1943.  He and Minnie moved to Wapato in 1955 where he
2 CONT farmed and worked for Cowin Orchards for 30 years until his retirement.  He was
2 CONT a member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Wapato.  Mr. Woitt his survived by his
2 CONT wife, Minnie Woitt, of Wapato, one daughter Bertha Hiatt of Yakima; 13
2 CONT grandchildren and numerous great and great great children; one brother, Edward
2 CONT Woitt of Pascagoula, MS; and two sisters, Ann Olson of San Diego, California,
2 CONT and Esther Reed of Arcada, California. He was preceded in death by two
2 CONT daugthers and one son.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, 13 DEc 1990 at
2 CONT 1 p.m. at the Hope Lutheran Church in Wapato.  Burial will be at the
2 CONT Reservation Community Memorial Park, west of Wapato.  If desired memorials may
2 CONT be made to the Hope Lutheran Church.

2 CONT She married Charles Hert on Feb. 4, 1923.  They farmed in the Yakima Valley
2 CONT until 1959.  She was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.  She was a
2 CONT member of church Lutheran Women's League and a church bible study group.  She
2 CONT was active in the Senior Citizen's Center.  She did crochet and embroidery and
2 CONT made many beautiful works for her family, friends and the church. Survivors
2 CONT include seven daughters, Mildred Baxter of Wapato, Hazel Parson, Linda Gilbert,
2 CONT Sharon Morehead and Barbara Sullivan, all of Yakima, Frances Tilton of Harrah,
2 CONT Betty Brown of Tacoma; three sons, Harvey and Lewis Hert, both of Lacey, Wash.;
2 CONT two brothers Edward Woitt of Miss; two sisters, Annie Olsen of San Diego, Ca.
2 CONT and Ester Reed of Arcadia, Ca.; 36 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren.
2 CONT She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, on October 21, 1976 and by
2 CONT two daughters.  Services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Bethlehem Lutheran
2 CONT Church.  Burial will be in Tahoma Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the
2 CONT Lutheran Missionary.

2 CONT FUNERAL HOME, Wapato. Rev. Coleman Burke of the First Baptist Church will
2 CONT officiate. Interment will be at the Reservation Community Memorial Park. Mr.
2 CONT Kissler was born 13 MAY 1900, in McCook, Neb. and had farmed in the Yakima
2 CONT Valley since 1920. He was preceded in death by his first wife Marie, who died
2 CONT in NOV 1960. Mr. Kissler married Eva Wixom, 30 JUNE 1971, and they had made
2 CONT their home in Wapato are for the past five years, where they attended the First
2 CONT Baptist Church. Mr. Kissler was the Senior Farmer of the Year for the Toppenish
2 CONT area in 1966 and was a member of the Cenex Board of Directors, formerly the
2 CONT United Farmers Co-op.  He is survived by his wife Eva of Wapato; five sons,
2 CONT Carl Jr. of Seattle, Donald of McCellan Air Force Base in California, Richard
2 CONT of Toppenish, David of Steilacoom, Washington, and Rodney of Prosser; six
2 CONT daughters, Dorothy Youngren of Spokane, Mary Lou Lightel of Wenatchee, and Rose
2 CONT Lee Astenius and Alvina Philips, both of Long Beach, California, Sarah
2 CONT Staudinger of Wapato and Kathleen Kissler of Wapato; four brothers, Gus of

2 CONT possible until 1:15 p.m.  The family suggests that memorials may be made to the
2 CONT Vashon Firemen's Ambulance Fund.  The aid crew fought valiantly to save Linda.

2 CONT granddaughter Donna McFarland since her husband Henry's death.  Minnie was born
2 CONT 25 AUG 1898, at Mildford Iowa to William and Nora Brown Peilecke.  The family
2 CONT moved to Montana and then in 1915 moved to Dayton, Washington.  They then moved
2 CONT to the Yakima Valley in the early 1930's where she met Henry Woitt.  She and
2 CONT Henry were married in Mabton on 27 JUNE 1943.  Minnie was a member of Hope
2 CONT Lutheran Church at Wapato.  Minnie enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, her
2 CONT family and going to church.  She is survived by one daughter Bertha Hiatt of
2 CONT Yakima; thirteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and several
2 CONT great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband on 10 DEC
2 CONT 1990, and two daughters, Clara and Mae and a son Melvin.  Funeral services will
2 CONT be held Monday, 16 AUG 1993 at 10:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church.  Burial will
2 CONT be at Reservation Community Memorial Park west of Wapato.

2 CONT Russia.  Christian Woitt married Pauline M. Schleiningon, the 24th day of Jan
2 CONT 1916.  Chris and Pauline were married in Billings, Montana.  After moving back
2 CONT to Washington, Chris became ill with the influenza, which was common at this
2 CONT time all over the country side.  This was a very hard time for Pauline, and
2 CONT after a short courtship with Christian, to lose him.  Pauline had given birth
2 CONT to Ella Marie on the 6th day of March 1917, and was pregnant with Christian Jr.
2 CONT when Christian died.  When Pauline and Ella arrived in Montana, Christian was
2 CONT born 30 JAN 1919 in Billings, Montana. Pauline was living with her folks (Henry
2 CONT and Elizabeth Schleining).  At this time in history it was very traumatic for a
2 CONT young woman with children to be widowed.  So she married Jacob Dietz on the
2 CONT 19th day of August 1920 in Billings, Montana. It is said that Jacob Dietz
2 CONT attended Christian Woitt and Pauline's wedding.  Jacob Dietz's sister,
2 CONT Katherine Elizabeth Hill even said that Jacob Dietz and Christian Woitt are
2 CONT cousins.  This hasn't been proved yet.  Back in the early 1900's it was not
2 CONT necessary to adopt one's step-children.  They were not considered
2 CONT step-children, just their children.
