George Washington was 28 years old, and Abraham 1 CONT Lincoln would not be born for fifty years. In 1776 Jonathan Pasco enlisted in Colonel John 1 CONT Patterson'sMassachusetts regiment. He fought with that regiment in the 1 CONT battle of Trenton. The battle of Trenton, known as the Christmas 1 CONT campaign, was an important American victory because it renewed the spirit 1 CONT of the patriot forces and seriously disarranged the plans of the British. 1 CONT The battle was fought in the early morning of December 25, after 1 CONT the commander-in-chief of all the Continental forces, George 1 CONT Washington, crossed the Delaware River. They marched to the enemy's camp 1 CONT at Trenton and took the Hessians, by surprise. Nearly one thousand 1 CONT British prisoners were captured. He was also a cousin of William Carpenter of Providencewho 1 CONC preceeded him from England to New England by several years. 1 CONT [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #0945, Date of Import: Oct 6, 1996] 1 CONT 1 CONT all info on this family from correspondence w/Helen Carpenter Burns 1990 1 CONT Among the first settlers of Rehoboth were 58 people from Weymouth who drew 1 CONT lots in the division of lands on June 31, 1644: William Carpenter's name 1 CONC in 1 CONT that division stands as number 10. At the first meeting of the 1 CONC proprietors of 1 CONT Rehoboth, held at Weymouth in 1643/4 to organize the settlement of the 1 CONC land 1 CONT which had been originally pruchased from teh Wampanoags in 1641 by men of 1 CONC the 1 CONT Plymouth Colony, the group chose nine "townsmen" to run their affairs. 1 CONC The 1 CONT company at Weymouth, led by the Rev. Samuel Newman, did not adhere to 1 CONC either 1 CONT the Massachusetts Bay Colony or the Plymouth Colony at first, preferring 1 CONC to 1 CONT consider itself an independent settlement. . . . however in 1644 the 1 CONT majority decided to join Plymouth Colony, soon after an election of 1 CONC townsmen 1 CONT was held. . . 1 CONT Tradition, as well as the description given in his will, indicates the 1 CONT WIlliam Carpenter residence was located in the "ring" directly east of 1 CONC the 1 CONT church. In 1645 William Carpenter was elected a Rehoboth representative 1 CONC to the 1 CONT governmental body at Plymouth, also chosen to look after the interest of 1 CONC the 1 CONT town and named as one of those empowered to hear and decide on 1 CONC gtrievances in 1 CONT regard to the division of land by lots. In 1647 and 1655 he was chosen 1 CONC as one 1 CONT of the directors of the town . . . 1 CONT His vocation was given on the shipping list as that of carpenter, but one 1 CONT wonders if he had not at one time planned to enter the ministry. His 1 CONC library, 1 CONT mentioned in his will, includes various religious works of the eras as 1 CONC welll as 1 CONT Latin classics, Greek and Hebrew grammars, biblical concordances and some 1 CONC legal 1 CONT works. These books, plus the fine script in which he wrote the early 1 CONC Rehoboth 1 CONT records, indicate he had a far better education than most of the early 1 CONC New 1 CONT England settlers. 1 CONT All of William Carpenter's children are mentioned in his will, which is 1 CONC dated 1 CONT the 10th day of the 10th month, 1658. (A copy of the will is on filewith 1 CONT Plymouth Old Colony records, --wills, Vol 2, pages 80-83, in Plymouth, 1 CONC MA) 1 CONT William died at Rehoboth Feb 7, 1658/59 and his will was proved April 21, 1 CONC 1659. 1 CONT His widow, Abigail, died at Rehoboth February 22, 1687/88. The maiden 1 CONC name 1 CONT of William's wife, Abigail, has never been confirmed by documentation. 1 CONC It is 1 CONT generally believed, however, that she was the daughter of WIlliam Bennett 1 CONC of 1 CONT Sway in Hampshire. William Bennett's will, made in 1630 and proven 1 CONC shortly 1 CONT after his Aug 20, 1638 burial, names as executors Ralph and William 1 CONC Carpenter, 1 CONT but only Ralph served as an executor. 1 CONT "Wm Carpenter of Rehoboth, MAS came to America on the ship BEVIS which 1 CONC salied 1 CONT in May of 1638 from Southampton, Hampshire, England with 61 passengers 1 CONC aboard. 1 CONT Accompanying him was his father William of Wherwell, Hampshire, age 62, 1 CONC wife 1 CONT Abigail 32y and 4 ch under 10y.
