1 CONC    My "Pappy". You will note that Gordon spells his name different from 
1 CONC everyone else in the family, there is a reason he did that. For some 
1 CONC time, Gordon went by his mothers maiden name, Jackson. You see, Mariah 
1 CONC was pregnant with Gordon when she married James Shaver. Her father, 
1 CONC George Jackson, had paid James $25.00 to marry Mariah. Mariah never told 
1 CONC who the father of the child "Gordon" was. James is actually his 
1 CONC stepfather, and all his brothers & sisters are actually his half brothers 
1 CONC & sisters. So anyway, Gordon went by the name Jackson for some time, but 
1 CONC back in those days, coal miners were only allowed to work underground for 
1 CONC a given amount of time, then you were left unemployed, so when that time 
1 CONC arrived, Gordon changed his name to Shaffer and continued working as a 
1 CONC coal miner. At least that's the oral history that has been handed down. 
1 CONT    Grandparents are not supposed to show favorites, but everyone knew 
1 CONC that I, was his favorite. Since all my family members call me, "Ginger", 
1 CONC papy had a little song he would always sing to me on the front porch 
1 CONC swing..... "Gingerbread, Gingerbread, pony-tails on her head". 
1 CONT    My Pappy has been my guardian angel for many years, his spirit came to 
1 CONC me when I was about 19 years old, chased away a peeping Tom, then sat on 
1 CONC my bed, patted my knee, told me to go off to sleep, that he would keep 
1 CONC watch over me during the night. I was safe and completly at ease all 
1 CONC night.
1 CONT    There was another incident that I recall,,,, there was a stranger 
1 CONC living in Pap & Gran's old house, my Aunt Janie lived a house past that 
1 CONC one, I had gone to visit her,,, the man living in the house, did not like 
1 CONC me, and would yell and threaten me, everytime I went by. My Aunt 
1 CONC explained to Mr. D. that he was living in my Pappy's house & that I was 
1 CONC his favorite grandchild and that Pappy's spirit would protect me,,, he'd 
1 CONC be wise to leave me alone. Mr. D. thought we were all full of it. The 
1 CONC very next week, I went to visit my Aunt, while we were driving through 
1 CONC town, with the radio on, I heard on the news about a house burning down 
1 CONC to the ground in Sugarlane. I told my husband that it had to be Pappy's 
1 CONC house, he burnt it down because Mr. D was harrassing me,,,, sure enough, 
1 CONC it was as I said, and still smoldering when we went by. Mr. D had no 
1 CONC insurance ! Mr. D. then let the taxes run up on the "worthless" site, and 
1 CONC my aunt quickly paid them and waited her year and a day, paid the lawyer, 
1 CONC and now, for a mere $50.00, the property is back in family hands !
1 CONT    So you see, Pappy IS my guardian angel !

1 CONC  Virginia Lea was known to her family as "Ginger". She & her sister 
1 CONC Vicky, were both adopted by their mothers 2nd husband, Richard H. Smith, 
1 CONC in 1967.
1 CONT    In 1972, they were adopted by their mothers 3rd husband, Daniel F. 
1 CONC White, while they were living in Monongalia Co. , Morgantown, WV.
1 CONT    In 1972, they moved back to Fairmont, WV. "Ginger" decided when she 
1 CONC arrived at the new school, Miller Jr. H.S., to change her nickname, so 
1 CONC she went by the name of "Jenny" White. The nickname stuck, she is still 
1 CONC known by her friends as "Jenny" today, (1996).
1 CONT    In 1973, "Jenny" White, moved to Buckhannon, W.V., to live with her 
1 CONC real Dad. She attended school at Buckhannon Upshur Junior High, then 
1 CONC Buckhannon Upshur H.S. She dated the boy on the next farm, Ricky G. 
1 CONC Hanifan, they eventually married.
1 CONT    After losing her baby on July 19, 1975, things went down hill, ending 
1 CONC in divorce after she left him, taking nothing but the clothes on her back.
1 CONT   She jumped right in to another relationship, which resulted in marriage 
1 CONC after only 1 year. This marriage ended up being the best and yet the 
1 CONC worst. Steve and "Jenny" worked on cars together, went to drag & stock 
1 CONC car races, went camping, did many activities together, but Steve was 
1 CONC unfaithful and abusive.
1 CONT    She had a tubular pregnancy and almost died in May of 1980. After 
1 CONC surgery, she got a divorce, and once again leaving with the mere clothes 
1 CONC on her back, she was off again. 
1 CONT    For about a year, she lived with a nice young man, Randy King, the 
1 CONC grandson of Thelma Patterson of Weston, WV., Lewis Co. Randy was a 
1 CONC carpenter and mason, he also played bass guitar with a local band, 
1 CONC "Forge"  and "Riff Raff". Members of the band at that time, were; Steve 
1 CONC Pickens (vocals), Craig Carrall (lead guitar), Doug Henry (drums), and 
1 CONC Randy King (bass guitar).  They got along fine, but as soon as Randy 
1 CONC mentioned the words marriage, Jenny made preparations to get out, she got 
1 CONC her GED and signed up for the Army. She had always said about marriage, 
1 CONC "Once they say, I do, they don't". Randy did not realize how his proposal 
1 CONC had frightened her, he tried later to get her to come back, but it was 
1 CONC just not the right time. She was off and running again.
1 CONT    On Aug. 4, 1981, she reported for training at Ft. McClellan, Ala. Co. 
1 CONC C, 1st Plt.  She had started attending drills with her Army Reserve Unit 
1 CONC (363rd MP Co.) back in May of 1981. She completed Basic Training on Sep. 
1 CONC 30, 1981 and was sent to Ft. Jackson, SC for training as a supply clerk 
1 CONC (76y10). She received a Diploma  for Unit Supply Specialist Course 
1 CONC 552-76y10 on Dec. 4, 1981. It was here at Ft. Jackson that she met the 
1 CONC love of her life, Henry Frank Divis from Denver, Col. , but as it turned 
1 CONC out in the end, they never got together. He used the excuse that she 
1 CONC treated him "too good", like a king. He went to WV to meet her parents, 
1 CONC and even showed up once in 1982 on her doorstep in Jane Lew, WV. She 
1 CONC often wondered if she'd ever get over the broken heart that he left her 
1 CONC with. She wrote poems about him, etc. but by 1987, they finally lost 
1 CONC track of each other.
1 CONT    In 1983, she attended HRDF's school in Clarksburg, Harrison Co., and 
1 CONC took classes in Building Mantenance. She attended 293 hours of training, 
1 CONC in which they touched on blueprint reading/drawing, basic carpentry and 
1 CONC electrical skills, she missed the classes on plumbing due to Army Reserve 
1 CONC training in Ft. Meade, Md. for Military Police School. She attended the 
1 CONC 8830th there and came home with a trophy for the "most enthusiastic".
1 CONT    Being lonely and wanting so much to have a normal life, she married a 
1 CONC guy who also attended HRDF, training in auto body repair. Charles E. 
1 CONC Walters, II. Known to friends as "Chuck" and to his family as "Ed". They 
1 CONC had been on one date, to McDonalds for lunch ! They were married on Aug. 
1 CONC 26, 1983. After only 4 1/2 months together, Jenny sent him packing ! They 
1 CONC remained married as neither could afford a divorce, plus they both 
1 CONC figured as long as they were married to each other, neither could make 
1 CONC this mistake so easily again !
1 CONT    In 1984, Jenny was dating James R. Bolden, who introduced her to Keith 
1 CONC M. Jones. Eventually, Jenny & Keith ended up together, they lived 
1 CONC together in Clarksburg, WV . He talked her into going Regular Army, she 
1 CONC did in Dec. of 1985. She was sent to Ft. Hood, Texas. It was while living 
1 CONC there, that she filed for a divorce from C.E. Walters. She had met a 
1 CONC wonderful guy while she was there, and came very close to marrying him 
1 CONC (John Joseph Jones). She received a phone call at the base, from "Hank" 
1 CONC Divis, he had just been to Ft. Hood and saw some girl that he had been 
1 CONC dating, she thinks she's pregnant, "Hank" had never wanted children. But, 
1 CONC he had decided to marry her. That was the last that Jenny had ever heard 
1 CONC from him. While home on leave, she married Keith M. Jones on Sept. 21, 
1 CONC 1986. She left him in 1990, they were divorced April 12, 1990. During the 
1 CONC Gulf War, Jenny tried desparatley to find Hank Divis, but was 
1 CONC unsuccessful.  Even knowing he was born Aug. 18th and his SSN# was 
1 CONC 524-90-9084 was of no help. She wonders weather he's dead or alive.
1 CONT    While working at Hills Dept. Store in Bridgeport, Harrison Co., WV , 
1 CONC Jenny ran into her X-husband, C.E. Walters, they decided to give it 
1 CONC another try, this time, it lasted only 3 1/2 months before she sent him 
1 CONC packing.
1 CONT    While working as a security gaurd at the Harrison Power Station, on 
1 CONC March 13, 1991,  Jenny met a very nice man, divorced, Kenneth John 
1 CONC Onderick. She told him she liked being single, she wasn't looking for 
1 CONC marriage etc. He called her everyday, sent cards, invited her to go to 
1 CONC Florida, which she did once she was laid off from work. As love always 
1 CONC does, it struck when it was least expected and the next thing you know, 
1 CONC she was moving to Pittsburgh, Pa. (She hates big cities). 
1 CONT    Jenny has been in Pgh. since May 1991. In 1992, "Kenny" bought them a 
1 CONC beautiful home at 342 Frazier Drive in Wilkins Township.  They are both 
1 CONC members of the local VFD located on their street. Jenny writes the 
1 CONC Neswletter for said VFD.  Kenny got Jenny a computer for her 38th 
1 CONC birthday so she could keep track of her family genealogy  and to pursue 
1 CONC other intrests she has.
1 CONT    Jenny had researched several genealogy softwares, luckily she picked 
1 CONC the best, The "Family Tree Maker Deluxe", as it turned out, this software 
1 CONC helped save her life, as she was diagnoised with Cancer in mid November 
1 CONC 1995. After discovering that it ran in the family, entering the 
1 CONC information in the computer,,, when she found the "lump" which was NOT 
1 CONC painful, a week of looking at her family tree convinced her to go to the 
1 CONC doctor. She's the type that only goes once every ten years ! As it turned 
1 CONC out, it was cancer, a lumpectomy was preformed and she is currently going 
1 CONC through chemotherapy treatments and survival chances are good, thanks to 
1 CONC the medical pages of her "Family Tree Maker"!
1 CONT    "Hopefully,"  she says, "this time we can end the story, by saying , 
1 CONC and they lived happily everafter !".
1 CONT    Jenny has been in Pittsburgh since. 
1 CONT    Jenny is a descendant of Zackquill Morgan, the founder of Morgantown, 
1 CONC West Virginia.( He made a permanent settlement there, in 1768.)  
1 CONC Zackquill is Jenny's 6th Great  Grandfather.
1 CONT    She was adopted to her mother's 2nd husband, Richard H.  Smith the 28 
1 CONC Feb 1967, and she was adopted to her mother's 3rd husband, Daniel F.
