He 2 CONT attended school in that place until 1883, when he came to Danbury and 2 CONT took a position in the dry goods store of McLean Bros., where he 2 CONT remained one year. 2 CONT In 1884 Mr. McLachlan became an apprentice in the making department 2 CONT of the factory of Nichols & Hine, on what is now Crosby Street. He 2 CONT became adept at his trade and only a short time after he had completed 2 CONT his apprenticeship his expertness in his craft and his evident exec- 2 CONT utive ability attracted the attention of Byron Dexter, then one of the 2 CONT city's leading hat manufacturers, who made him a foreman in his 2 CONT factory. 2 CONT Two years later Mr. McLachlan, who had become a close student of the 2 CONT hat industry, as well as an expert workman, foresaw the possibilities 2 CONT existing in the rough hat industry, which was then in its infancy, and 2 CONT giving up his position in the Dexter factory, established a manufact- 2 CONT uring business of his own upon a small scale. Prior to that time it 2 CONT had been almost the universal custom to produce fur felt hats through- 2 CONT out in the same establishment. Gradually, however, small finishing and 2 CONT trimming shops had been springing up in various parts of the country 2 CONT and Mr. McLachlan saw the probability of greater increased demand on 2 CONT the part of such establishments for hat bodies in the rough. 2 CONT In 1897 Mr. McLachlan experienced the satisfaction of moving his own 2 CONT business into a part of the factory in which he had served his 2 CONT apprenticeship in the hat industry. In 1904 the S.A.G. Hat Co. was 2 CONT established and in 1909 Mr. McLachlan and Frank H. Lee formed a part- 2 CONT nership under the name of the Lee-McLachlan Co., which continued until 2 CONT 1914. H. McLachlan & Co.,Inc. under which name Mr. McLachlan's 2 CONT business has since been conducted, was incorporated in 1914. 2 CONT On Fortieth Anniversary 2 CONT A sketch of Mr. McLachlan's company published on the occasion of the 2 CONT 40th anniversary of the founding of the business, in 1932 said,"Forty 2 CONT years from the time of its establishment as a pioneer adventure in 2 CONT the almost untried field of rough hat production, H. McLachlan & Co., 2 CONT Inc., manufacturers of fur felt hats in the rough, Danbury, this year 2 CONT celebrates an anniversary as one of the foremost manufacturing 2 CONT concerns in the industry, and a leader in its own particular branch. 2 CONT And it argues well for the years to come, that the company stands on 2 CONT the threshold of the final decade of a half-century with a unified 2 CONT organization -- Harry McLachlan, Sr., who founded the business, and 2 CONT five sons trained by him in the school of practical experience -- 2 CONT Harry, Jr., Jack, Arnold, George and Donald. 2 CONT "H. McLachlan & Co., has long been an outstanding firm in its field. 2 CONT It was the first firm to engage solely in the manufacture of rough hats 2 CONT in Danbury, and the second in the entire country. At the present time 2 CONT it enjoys a world-wide reputation among hat men as one of the fore- 2 CONT most of hatting organizations. 2 CONT "The history of the concern is largely a reflection of the spirit and 2 CONT character of its founder and head, Harry McLachlan, Sr. Mr. McLachlan 2 CONT is a pioneer among manufacturers of hat bodies in the rough ex- 2 CONT clusively. 2 CONT National Figure In Industry 2 CONT While engaged in the management and development of one of the city's 2 CONT largest manufacturing enterprises, Mr. McLachlan also found opportun- 2 CONT ity to devote a great deal of time and energy to matters concerning 2 CONT the welfare of the entire industry and in doing so became a recognized 2 CONT leader in national affairs in the industry. He was the first president 2 CONT of the National Association of Hat Manufacturers, which afterwards 2 CONT became the Hat Institute, and was vice-president of the latter group. 2 CONT One of his outstanding services to the hat industry as a whole was 2 CONT performed as chairman of the tariff committee representing the hat 2 CONT manufacturers of the country. In this capacity he led for twenty years 2 CONT or longer the successive movements to secure and maintain adequate 2 CONT tariff protection for the products of hat factories of the United 2 CONT States from unfair foreign competition. His service in this respect 2 CONT was given notable recognition in 1930, when he was chosen as guest of 2 CONT honor at the annual dinner of the Hat Trade and Allied Industries, in 2 CONT New York City. 2 CONT Another national service was performed during the World War, when he 2 CONT was one of the most energetic members of the Hat Trade Service Comm. 2 CONT Active In Community Life 2 CONT Mr. McLachlan gave his time and talents as unselfishly in connection 2 CONT with matters pertaining to his community as he did to the hat 2 CONT industry. At the time of his death he was a member of the Board of 2 CONT Education, upon which he had served for many years. He was chairman of 2 CONT the citizen's committee appointed by Mayor G.Walter Morgan to inquire 2 CONT into the proposed enlargement of the city's water system. In many other 2 CONT public and semi-public matters he either served upon active committees 2 CONT or acted as a consultant. 2 CONT He was one of the founders of Ridgewood Country Club and served as 2 CONT president of that organization. He was long a director of the 2 CONT Danbury National Bank, resigning a few months ago because of his 2 CONT impaired health. He was also one of the founders of the Danbury 2 CONT Building & Loan Association and the first and only president of that 2 CONT organization, devoting much time to its upbuilding. 2 CONT Mr. McLachlan was a member of the McGivney Council, Knights of 2 CONT Columbus of this city, and of the Rev. John D. Kennedy assembly, 2 CONT Fourth degree of that order. He was a leader in the movement to 2 CONT establish the present Knights of Columbus home on Main Street, and was 2 CONT a member of the board of managers of the home. He was a member of St. 2 CONT Peter Church. He was also a member of the Danbury Club and a former 2 CONT president of that organization; president of the Danbury Electric 2 CONT Manufacturing Co.; a member of the National Republican Club and also 2 CONT of the Caledonian Society of New York. 2 CONT In the last presidential election, Mr. McLachlan was chosen a presi- 2 CONT dential elector upon the Republican ticket and in that capacity 2 CONT assisted in casting the vote of Connecticut for Herbert Hoover. 2 CONT Loved By Associates 2 CONT Mr. McLachlan had the affection of his friends and acquaintances to a 2 CONT degree that few men enjoy. He possessed a personality and warmth of 2 CONT friendship that attracted friends. He played the part of host to his 2 CONT business associates in the bank, the building & loan associates and 2 CONT other organizations upon many occasions and his reputation for open- 2 CONT hearted hospitality was widespread. 2 CONT In 1893, Mr. McLachlan married Miss Margaret Byron, of this city, who 2 CONT survives him. He also leaves seven children, Mrs. Harry Scanlan, of 2 CONT Danbury; Mrs. George A. Sullivan, of Salem, Mass., and Harry 2 CONT McLachlan, Jr.; J.B. McLachlan, Arnold McLachlan, George A. McLachlan 2 CONT and Donald McLachlan, all of Danbury. He also leaves two brothers, 2 CONT George A. McLachlan, of Danbury and Daniel McLachlan of New York City, 2 CONT and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Wright, of Danbury, and Mrs. Lawrence 2 CONT McKenon, of Bethel. Twelve grandchildren also survive. 2 CONT The funeral services will be held on Thursday, from the late home, 2 CONT 86 West Street, at 10:15 and at St. Peter's Church at 11 o'clock. 2 CONT Interment will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, Lake Kenosia. (DN-T,2/7/33) 2 CONT TRIBUTE BY STUDENTS 2 CONT Memory of Mr. McLachlan Honored at High School 2 CONT To the many expressions of regret at the passing of Harry McLachlan, 2 CONT the students of Danbury High School have added their tribute to Mr. 2 CONT McLachlan as a member of the Board of Education in the following which 2 CONT appears in the recent edition of the Chronicle-Rostrum: 2 CONT With the passing of this great philanthropist the city of Danbury and 2 CONT its school board has lost an individual hard to replace. He passed 2 CONT into the great beyond on Monday last, one of our most respected and 2 CONT honored citizens. 2 CONT If the students of Danbury High school would model themselves after 2 CONT this great figure, the coming generation would be an enviable one. 2 CONT His fairness has long been his most commendable trait. This is not, 2 CONT by any means, his only outstanding characteristic; his generosity, his 2 CONT honesty, his integrity, and his simplicity all go to make up and 2 CONT build the structure upon whose shoulders many a depressing worry has 2 CONT rested. 2 CONT We of the Chronicle-Rostrum board sincerely regret his demise and 2 CONT extend our sympathy to his family and host of friends.
