2 CONT Mike is a Sea Captain of "The Alaska Ocean," which happens to be the largest
2 CONT Factory/Stern-Traller operating in the Pacific. The ship has an overall length
2 CONT of 376' and 60' breadth. The depth of the main deck is 27' and depth of the
2 CONT upper deck is 37' 6".
1 NOTE    The remarkable thing about this beautiful vessel is that it once was a oil
2 CONT supply vessel. Mike's first contact with this ship came 28 Dec 1988. In Mike's
2 CONT own words he once wrote in the ship's newsletter:
2 CONT    "My first job working for Jeff Hendricks was delivering the STATE EXPRESS
2 CONT from Morgan City, Louisiana to Ulsteinvik, Norway. In case you did not
2 CONT know, the STATE EXPRESS was an oil supply vessel that was converted into
2 CONT the ALASKA OCEAN. She was approximately 200 feet long with a 40 foot beam.
2 CONT As a matter of fact, she looked very similar to our last search boat, the
2 CONT CHAMPION.
2 CONT    Originally, Jeff wanted to deliver the STATE EXPRESS himself but was unable
2 CONT due to business in Anacortes. His busy schedule was my good fortune.
2 CONT    We first arrived at Norgan City on 28 Dec 1988 to familiarize ourselves with
2 CONT the ship to make final preparation for our departure. The crew consisted of
2 CONT myself as captain, mate Bill Warmington, chief engineer Bob Clark, assistant
2 CONT engineer Barry McDermott, cook Brian McDermott, and Norwegian mates Harold
2 CONT Rosvik and Ole Bjorhusdal. The vessel was at Conrad Industries, a small
2 CONT shipyard where she had been for the past month being refitted for the trip to
2 CONT Norway. We spent the next two days loading groceries, taking on fuel, swinging
2 CONT the compass, completing safety checks and finally a short sea trial.
2 CONT    Our departure was on New Year's Eve, 31 Dec 1988. We entered the Atchafalaya
2 CONT River and headed down stream ... Morgan City was 60 miles from the Gulf of
2 CONT Mexico. Ninety minutes after our departure we ran aground on a sand bar. Jeff
2 CONT was still on board at this time and I remember thinking to myself, "Good job,
2 CONT Mike! This will really help you nake a good impression with the owner."
2 CONT Fortunately, we were able to back off without any damage.
2 CONT    At nightfall we passed the sea buoy and were in the Gulf. From there we
2 CONT headed southeasterly to Key West, Florida. South of Florida we turned to the
2 CONT east, passed through the Bahamas, then set a course for the Azores.
2 CONT    On day seven of the trip, while passing through the Bermuda Triangle, the
2 CONT fire alarm sounded. I was in bed at the time and when I woke up the first thing
2 CONT I noticed was the smell of smoke. I ran down to the galley expecting to see
2 CONT something burning on the stove but everything was normal. Next, I opened the
2 CONT door to the engine room and smoke came out. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and
2 CONT headed aft. When I entered the engine room it was full of smoke except for the
2 CONT lower three feet. Through the smoke, flames could be seen in the starboard
2 CONT main engine. The chief was right next to the flames with a C02 extinguisher and
2 CONT I could hear it being discharged (all that was visable of the chief was his
2 CONT lower legs.) He put the fire out but it kept flaring up. Finally he was able to
2 CONT shut down the engine and the fire remained out.
2 CONT    After the smoke had cleared, Bob, (the chief) gave me a casual look like he
2 CONT does this all the time. We had a good laugh and that seemed to break the
2 CONT tension. Evidently an oil line had cracked and was spraying oil onto a hot
2 CONT turbocharger. Bob repaired the leak and we were underway again within an hour.
2 CONT    On 15 Jan 1989 we pulled into Ponta Delgado in the Azores. The Azores are a
2 CONT Portuguese possession and consist of a group of nine islands two thirds of the
2 CONT way across the Atlantic. We needed the stop to take on fuel, fresh water, and
2 CONT to pick up some more fire extinguishers. Even though our stay was brief we did
2 CONT manage to get in a little sightseeing and even sample some of the local
2 CONT beverages. The next morning we were again underway and headed for the English
2 CONT Channel.
2 CONT    Not much to say about the Channel because it was so foggy and rainy we
2 CONT couldn't see. After clearing the Channel we turned nort along the eastern shore
2 CONT of England. Our passage through the North Sea was uneventfull until we reached
2 CONT the southern coast of Norway. There we ran into a little weather, forty knot
2 CONT winds with 8 feet seas. This wasn't all that bad but the STATE EXPRESS shook
2 CONT and rattled with each wave. Sleep was impossible and one of the Norwegian
2 CONT mates, Harald, was extremely seasick. In twenty years of fishing I have never
2 CONT heard anyone retch as often and as loud as poor Harald. Fortunately the weather
2 CONT improved and so did Harald.
2 CONT    On 23 Jan 1989 at 0550 we tied to the dock in Ulsteinvik. Like all journeys,
2 CONT this one had to end, but the end of the STATE EXPRESS was the beginning of the
2 CONT ALASKA OCEAN.
2 CONT    As I look back on the trip I have a lot of fond memories. I made some good
2 CONT friends and got to see a little more of the world; however, I think the best
2 CONT part was seeing an ugly duckling transformed into a beautiful swan. I am proud
2 CONT of our ship and I am proud of each of you. You are the key to the success of
2 CONT the ALASKA OCEAN. We have come a long ways since Trip Number 1 but we must not
2 CONT rest on our laurels. We must always strive to do better, to increase
2 CONT production, to work more safely and to treat each other with cortesy and
2 CONT respect."

1 NOTE Ben Lindsay was a coal miner for the better part of his life. He loved to bird
2 CONT hunt and was a pretty good dog trainer. He was a self-educated person without
2 CONT any common school education. He learned to read, by reading the Bible and could
2 CONT quote more scripture than any TV Minister I have ever seen. He was affiliated
2 CONT with no church; but, attended them all. He always said, "I belong to the Church
2 CONT of God." He died with a heart attack.

2 CONT          first record of him is the 1860 Census of Hawesville, Hancock Co.,
2 CONT          Kentucky.  It shows he was a coal miner and to be born in England.
2 CONT          His father-in-law, Thomas WILSON, had brought his family to the United
2 CONT          States about 1840-1841. If Edward BERKLEY came at the same time, or
2 CONT          from the same place, is unknown. He worked in the Victoria Coal Mine
2 CONT          which was located about three miles from Patesville, Hancock Co.,
2 CONT          Kentucky. Many of the miners had immigrated from Durham Co., England.
2 CONT          The superintendent of the mine was Benjamin DAVISON. Edward BERKLEY
2 CONT          named one of his children Benjamin; and, I have always wondered if he
2 CONT          was named for DAVISON.
1 NOTE  MARRIAGE - I have found no marriage record in Hancock Co., Kentucky; therefore,
2 CONT          it is assumed they married about 1850, somewhere in Kentucky, before
2 CONT          the WILSON family took residence in Hancock County.
1 NOTE DEATH -  Tombstone Inscription, Hawesville Cemetery at Hawesville, Kentucky. He
2 CONT         was killed while at work in the Victoria Coal Mine. His tombstone has
2 CONT         the following verse:
2 CONT                      "In bloom of life, I am called away,
2 CONT                        God's sovereign will, I must obey.
2 CONT                      My loving wife and children dear,
2 CONT                        Oh, Lord, I leave them in thy care."
