To better qualify himself for this chosen occupation, 2 CONT David attended Mercer Academy,Mercer, Pennsylvania and Allegheny College 2 CONT in Meadville,Pennsylvania. Religion became a focal point in this young 2 CONT King's life when he joined the Methodist Church in New Castle, 2 CONT Pennsylvania in 1834 as an 18 year old youth. The year 1836 finds David 2 CONT King, Missionary-teacher, and the family of John Holton, farmer, heading 2 CONT for the Illinois Methodist Conference, more specifically,Red 2 CONT Rock,Minnesota, then in Wisconsin Territory. A severe winter closed the 2 CONT rivers to navigation and the party wintered at Praire du Chien, Wisconsin. 2 CONT This small band of missionary frontiersman which now included Reverend 2 CONT Alfred Brunson of Pittsburg and a former slave , James Thompson, those 2 CONT freedom had been purchased for $1200. by Reverend Brunson, reached Fort 2 CONT Snelling(Minnesota) Wisconsin Territory in June 1837. On the first Sabbath 2 CONT after arrival Reverend David Lamb King preached to the garrison stationed 2 CONT here. But let recorded history tell of this sermon. Reverend King's text 2 CONT for the day was Ephesians 5:14: 2 CONT 2 CONT " Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give 2 CONT thee light." 2 CONT 2 CONT The words were fervently eloquent and the style exceeding dramatic, in 2 CONT fact he became so very forceful that the pulpit collapsed under his 2 CONT fist-pounding which was accompanied by the soldiers' laughter. All of this 2 CONT and young King had not yet reached his majority of 21 years. A Swedish 2 CONT soldier in the U.S. Army, Jacob Falhstrom, was among those in attendance 2 CONT and afterwards told Reverend King that he now wished to join the 2 CONT missionary group, thus becoming the young minister's first convert. While 2 CONT serving at Fort Snelling Mr. King helped establish the Kaposia Mission and 2 CONT also a farm for Indians in the area. The First Methodist Church of South 2 CONT St. Paul now stands near the land of the first mission and a monument 2 CONT commemorating this early outpost is located there with David's name 2 CONT thereon also with the other three members of the original group. In 1956 2 CONT the Minnesota Methodist Conference meeting in Minneapolis celebrated its 2 CONT 100th year of Methodism. A pageant, "When the North Star Calls," was 2 CONT presented depicting among its many scenes the story of David King and 2 CONT fellow members of that pioneer group. ("Christian Advocate," 19 Apr 2 CONT 1956,Dr. T. Otto Mall editor.) In 1843 Reverend King withdrew from the 2 CONT mission field and settled in Butler's Point, Vermillion County, Illinois 2 CONT to teach school and preach. To be seen in his school ledger, still intact 2 CONT and legible, are the names of his many students including his future wife 2 CONT , Mary Jane Whitcomb and several of her brothers. David and Mary Jane were 2 CONT married in the home of her parents Francis and Jane (Evans) Whitcomb. This 2 CONT house was still standing in 1975. David , wife Mary, and children 2 CONT Elizabeth and William ,accompanied by Mary's parents, the Francis 2 CONT Whitcomb Family, moved to Mclean County, Illinois in 1847. In addition to 2 CONT farming , teaching, and preaching, Mr. King established a U.S. post 2 CONT office at Padua on May 13, 1852. David resigned his postmastership Sept 28 2 CONT 1854 and with his family started for Minnesota. The winter of 1854-55 was 2 CONT spent at the home of his brother William in Jackson County, Iowa. However 2 CONT before wintered closed in, David, accompanied by several nephews and a 2 CONT brother in-law journeyed north to Kalmar Township, Olmsted County, 2 CONT Minnesota Territory to lay claim to land and to build a cabin for future 2 CONT use. On May 2 1855, the King Family in a wagon train made up of some 20 2 CONT people , principally relatives, four ox-drawn wagons, and other livestock 2 CONT headed north across Iowa to Kalmar Township,Minnesota Territory. The new 2 CONT home, the cabin built the previous year, was located about 3 miles north 2 CONT of present -day Byron on the banks of the Zumbro River. To make room for 2 CONT an ever increasing family, a two story house was built on the site in 2 CONT 1859. Although this house does not now exist , the basement and old well 2 CONT are easily discernible. Reverend King's ambitions and civic activities did 2 CONT not diminish in this new land as evidenced by the following: first 2 CONT ordination papers filed in Olmsted County; first methodist sermon, October 2 CONT 1854; first religious service in Mantorville, Dodge County, Minnesota; 2 CONT member of the first Minnesota State Legislature in 1859; chairman of the 2 CONT first board of Kalmar Township supervisers and served three additional 2 CONT years as a member; township treasurer two years; twice Justice of th 2 CONT Peace. Although Reverend King was never a full time minister due to a 2 CONT voice problem, he continued to preach and minister to people's wants 2 CONT through all his years in Kalmar Township. David was also chosen as a 2 CONT member of the Commission that drafted the Constitution for the State of 2 CONT Minnesota. The Constitution was signed August 29, 1857. When the great 2 CONT Master called in 1898, David Lamb King was laid to rest beside his wife 2 CONT Mary Jane in the Byron, Minnesota cemetery. Smith from Howard County, Missouri settled along Cedar 2 CONT Creek in 1837. Obadiah's wife and two sons accompanied him his first trip. 2 CONT One of whom is my Great-Great-Great Grandfather Reubin. Obadiah was a 2 CONT prosperous farmer, dedicated preacher, and Political Leader. He and his 2 CONT five sons were all killed in the Civil War. Like those other hardy 2 CONT immigrants who were coming here at that time, he came in one of those 2 CONT heavy pioneer wgons, drawn by several yokes of oxen, and loaded with 2 CONT various tools and supplies which are necessary for settling in a 2 CONT wilderness country. Obidiah's wife Catherine Lucinda Hartman was with him. 2 CONT Lucinda as she went by was born in North Carolina, and had migrated with 2 CONT her parents to Missouri some years before. Obadiah was also from the 2 CONT South, his parents having come out from Kentucky while he was yet a young 2 CONT man. He arrived by keel boat at Fort Hempstead on July 1809 with his 2 CONT parents and three other brothers and sisters. His parents were Andrew 2 CONT Smith born 1779 in North Carolina and Sara Scriviner born 1770 in 2 CONT Kentucky. Obadiah and Lucinda were married in 1832, and when they 2 CONT migrated to Cedar County they had two small children Reubin who was four 2 CONT and John who was two. Obadiah was not as robust as his brother , but was 2 CONT by no means a physical weakling. He had very little schooling, but had an 2 CONT interest in intellectual pursuits, particularly in such things as reading 2 CONT and understanding the teachings of the Holy Bible. When the Smith brothers 2 CONT arrived in Cedar County territory many other settlers were already their. 2 CONT There was an abundance of land left, however, and Obadiah settled on the 2 CONT west side of Cedar Creek, on a part of section 3, Township 35, and Range 2 CONT 27. He evidently knew land values, since his farm later became quite 2 CONT productive and enabled him to aquire the entire section. Obadiah Smith was 2 CONT only 32 years of age when he arrived in Cedar County, but he had 2 CONT experienced many of the vicissitudes of Life. He had been an officer in 2 CONT the Black Hawk War, having served with General Claiborne and Jackson. He 2 CONT not only had worldly experience, but religious faith, and a passion for 2 CONT living a righteous life in accordance with his convictions. Even before he 2 CONT completed his own living quarters he began promotional activities for the 2 CONT establishment of a church in the new community. The first church in the 2 CONT territory which later became Cedar County was organized in the summer of 2 CONT 1838. Obadiah Smith was largely responsible as he assisted in bringing 2 CONT officers to officiate at the organization. The minutes of the 2 CONT organizational meeting have been preserved, and are as followes: "Cedar 2 CONT Creek, St. Clair County, Missouri, July 1st, Saturday, 1838. In compliance 2 CONT with a request of the members of the Baptist Church, whose names are 2 CONT hereafter annexed, Elders Elijah Williams and Hiram Savage, with William 2 CONT Savage, an ordained Deacon, attended at the place and time mentioned as 2 CONT Presbyters for the purpose of constituting said members into a Church. 2 CONT William Ainsworth John Connor Lucretia Ainsworth 2 CONT Warren P. Revis John Long Exra Hamor Obadiah Smith Hesiah Hamor Church 2 CONT services were held at Cedar Church the following day with Hiram Savage 2 CONT delivering the service. Cedar Church was an accomplished fact, but there 2 CONT was no building and no ordained minister. From the begining of time every 2 CONT community has had itsreligious leader; even the most uncivilized tribes of 2 CONT people had their high priests, or medicine men. Likewise, the early 2 CONT settlers on Cedar Creek had their leader in Obadiah Smith. Most such 2 CONT leaders make an occupation of their calling and receive pay for their 2 CONT services. Sometimes however, there comes along one of those rare 2 CONT individuals, who labors only for the enjoyment of his accomplishment. One 2 CONT of the latter was Obadiah Smith. Marion Williams who attended services 2 CONT while he was preaching said, "In education he was not superior to those 2 CONT about him, but his was an unusual individuality. He was just the large 2 CONT hearted Christian man to reach out to all the new settlers to draw them 2 CONT together for religious worship. In the begining, Obadiah made no pretense 2 CONT of being a preacher, or minister, but was described as being" religiously 2 CONT aggressive". Later, and in conformity with the precepts of the Baptist 2 CONT denomination, he felt he had been "called" to preach and spread the Gospel 2 CONT throughout the land. The members of Cedar Church nominated Smith for 2 CONT moderator at the second meeting of the Church, in August, 1838. This was 2 CONT the begining of his career in church work which was to continue for the 2 CONT next 25 years. From this small begining, mainly through his efforts , the 2 CONT Baptist Accociation was to extend throughout the territory covering the 2 CONT northern part of Cedar and part of southern St. Clair Counties. It took 2 CONT approximately four years to raise the money and start work on Cedar 2 CONT Church. In the meantime meetings continued to be held at the homes of 2 CONT various members. During the summer of 1842, services were held in the 2 CONT house of Dr. William Gordon. It is interesting to note that among the 2 CONT converts was one known as Gordon's Matildah. This was Matildah, a Negro 2 CONT slave belonging to Dr. Gordon, and her conversion is an indication that 2 CONT Cedar Church did not discriminate because of color or condition of 2 CONT servitude. Obadiah Smith, together with L.R. Athworth, who had recently 2 CONT arrived from Virginia, were ordained as ministers in September 1841. It 2 CONT had taken more than two years to have Obadiah Smith ordained, since there 2 CONT were so few in the country authorized to officiate in such church matters. 2 CONT Marion Williams who attended services at Cedar Church and knew Obadiah 2 CONT Smith personally says of Smith, that "through all this timeSmith had 2 CONT continued the same unceasing worker, and it will here be stated that 2 CONT through faithful ministry of a quarter of a century he neither asked nor 2 CONT recieved pay for preaching. He would stand up in his pulpit and ask his 2 CONT people to contribute to other preachers, adding sometimes, with a smile, 2 CONT that a good horse can work on the grass, an expression which all in the 2 CONT new country well understood. Smith acted on principle. He earnestly sought 2 CONT the conversion of the unsaved. In all their farming operations the Smiths 2 CONT were well up with their neighbors, and Obadiah neither asked nor received 2 CONT help from them. If a camp meeting continued one week or two weeks, which 2 CONT they often did, Obadiah would be there day and night till its close. There 2 CONT would be no work from him about his home or his business --- never a word 2 CONT that would remind anyone that he had a home. His whole mind and might at 2 CONT such times, were in the meetings, which were closed only when it was 2 CONT thought the good of the cause required. In church his dress was usually 2 CONT just a little better than the average of his congregation, but the day 2 CONT after the close of a meeting he would be in his everyday clothes and at 2 CONT work like any farmer. He had his crops and his live stock. Among the 2 CONT farmers he was one of them. He knew how to sympathize with them in their 2 CONT failures. Preacher and people were near together. They knew that he 2 CONT studied his sermons between his plow handles. Quick in discernment, firm 2 CONT and positive in his convictions, doing with his might what his hands found 2 CONT to do, he was born to be a leader. he was sociable and ready in 2 CONT conversation, which he constantly tried to make helpful and which he never 2 CONT permitted to descend to trifling frivolity. His generous hospitality was 2 CONT almost unbounded, his doors were always open and his table always spread 2 CONT for his friends and for any that might be in need." It is almost an axiom 2 CONT that all great movement are accompanied by tragedy. The movement to 2 CONT establish churches throughout early day Cedar was no exception. The Cedar 2 CONT Association as an organization gradually dwindled away after the Civil War 2 CONT for lack of a leader. Its motivating force was the altruistic spirit of 2 CONT Obadiah Smith and its fortunes must rise and fall with his. Obadiah's 2 CONT wife, Lucinda, died shortly after the family settled in Cedar County. 2 CONT Reubin and John were the couples only children. Soon after the death of 2 CONT his first wife, Obadiah married Elizabeth Hartman, a younger sister of 2 CONT Lucinda. To this union six children were born : they were, Andrew, Henry, 2 CONT Peter, Campell, Samuel W. and Catherine. Catherine, the only girl and the 2 CONT youngest was born in 1849. When the Civil War started Obadiah Smith was 55 2 CONT years of age. In spite of the vast time he spent in church work, he 2 CONT continued to prosper from his farming operations and was one of the 2 CONT wealthiest men in Cedar County. In those days of confusion when Cedar 2 CONT County was almost equally divided between those who maintained loyalty to 2 CONT the North and to the South, men of means were likely victims of either 2 CONT side. Obadiah Smith was no exception, in spite of the fact that he was 2 CONT known far and wide as a God Fearing man. After the War started all 2 CONT organized church work had to be abandoned. The Smith boys who were at the 2 CONT time of military age enlisted on the side of the North. Obadiah entered 2 CONT politics and was appointed Representative from Cedar County to the State 2 CONT Legislature for the 1862-1863 session. He returned home from Jefferson 2 CONT City in the Spring of 1863, at a time when his sons were away fighting. On 2 CONT April 18, 1863, a group of men wearing ragged blue uniforms approached the 2 CONT house of Obadiah Smith, and called for him to come out front. The men 2 CONT appeared to be a group of Federal Scouts, so he and his wife, Elizabeth, 2 CONT went out to see what they wanted. Obadiah took along his rifle, which was 2 CONT a weapon far superior to the ordinary musket of that time. After talking 2 CONT to the men for a time, one of them asked to take a closer look at 2 CONT Obadiah's weapon. Still assuming they were Union troops he gladly 2 CONT complied. Obadiah realized too late, that he had made a fatal mistake-- 2 CONT his callers were Rebel Guerillas; he was executed by his own weapon while 2 CONT standing by his wife. The manner of the passing of Obadiah Smith is partly 2 CONT legend but the time and place of his death are authentic. All five of his 2 CONT sons died in the Civil War. His passing brought to an end the career of 2 CONT one of Cedar County's most devoted and dedicated religious leaders. His 2 CONT last resting place is near the middle of the western part of the Hackleman 2 CONT Cemetery --- there is a marker not far from the markers of those other 2 CONT early pioneer's like John G. and Nancy Williams, Robert and Levicy 2 CONT Williams, Thomas and James Gordon, and many other's. The tragedies of the 2 CONT Civil War halted the expansion of the Cedar Association --- but Obadiah 2 CONT Smith's work was not lost. "He was like a man who built a house, and 2 CONT digged deep, and laid the foundation upon a rock: and when the flood 2 CONT arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: 2 CONT for it was founded upon a rock." Likewise the churchs which Obadiah Smith 2 CONT and his followers founded were built upon a solid foundation of integrity, 2 CONT self denial, and brotherly love. In spite of the ravages of the Civil War, 2 CONT the panics and depressions, and the luxuries of modern good roads and 2 CONT quick transportation, after 125 years, a number of those old Cedar 2 CONT Association churches are still in existence. 0 @I238@ INDI 1 NAME Catherine Lucinda /HARTMAN/ 1 SEX F 1 FAMS @F67@ 0 @I239@ INDI 1 NAME Andrew /SMITH/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1779 2 PLAC North Carolina 1 DEAT 2 DATE 17 OCT 1840 2 PLAC Howard Co.,Kentucky 1 FAMS @F68@ 0 @I240@ INDI 1 NAME Sarah /SCRIBNER/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1770 2 PLAC Kentucky 1 FAMS @F68@ 0 @I241@ INDI 1 NAME Clara Agusta /STRIMPLE/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 16 NOV 1898 1 DEAT 2 DATE 1 MAR 1968 1 FAMC @F13@ 0 @I242@ INDI 1 NAME /CASPER SAX/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 PLAC Germany 1 DEAT 2 DATE 13 JUL 1775 2 PLAC Pennsneck Twnsp. First it is certain that the de 2 CONT Coninck(King) ancestors were educated persons because the conduct of 2 CONT business required a fair degree of intelligence and executive ability. 2 CONT They evidently had training in mathematics and probably were familar with 2 CONT the use of counters and of the abacus.
