Gibson 1 CONT 1 CONT Mrs. Maggie A. Seacatt, daughter of Henry S. and Jane Gibson, was born 1 CONC July 31st, 1860, was marriet to C.C. Seacatt July 16th, 1879, and died 1 CONC May 13th, 1891, at 6 o'clock and 40 minutes A.M. She was a seeker of 1 CONC religion for fourteen years and in the winter of 1890-91, during a season 1 CONC of revival in Lebanon, she professed faith in Christ and lived up to the 1 CONC full standard of Christianity to the day of her death. Her health had 1 CONC always been usually good up to the month of March of the present year, at 1 CONC which time she was confined to her bed for about three weeks, suffering 1 CONC acutely from sciatic pains. She recovered from this illness, but it was 1 CONC only for a short time that she was pemitted to go in and out among her 1 CONC friends and to cheer the hearts of her loved ones at home by filling her 1 CONC accustomed place in health. She was soon sick a second time, and from 1 CONC the first of this attack she seemed impressed that she would not recover 1 CONC and talked freely to her husband on the subject. During her illness many 1 CONC words of comfort fell form her lips, which are now cherished and 1 CONC treasured by her friends as ADDED assurances of her eternal gain. Only 1 CONC two days before her death she asked her husband "Did you see him?" When 1 CONC he asked whom, she replied, "Christ, he is here, I saw him." She had not 1 CONC connected herself with any church here on earth, But now she has joined 1 CONC that innumerable company that "Have washed their robes and made them 1 CONC white in the blood of the Lamb." 1 CONT "Far, far above the valley, 1 CONT Where struggling mortals plod, 1 CONT She is far into the heart of Jesus, 1 CONT Where her soul is alone with God." 1 CONT Having known her from girlhood days until her death, we can not do less 1 CONC than ascribe to her those charms and virtues which constitute true 1 CONC loveliness of character. She was reared in an atmosphere of love and 1 CONC under the influence of religious training, at the hands of fond christian 1 CONC parents. In every relation in life, her amiability of disposition, won 1 CONC her the love and esteem of all with whom she was associated. Having 1 CONC spent her entire life in this community, Maggie, by her quite, gentle and 1 CONC retiring, (though none the less decided and positive), walk had gotten a 1 CONC deep hold upon the affections of the people of Lebanon. She will be 1 CONC missed from her accustomed place in the Sunday school and in the church 1 CONC and prayer meeting. Her neighbors will mourn her absence with deep 1 CONC sorrow. Thus the outer circle of friends weep - comforting their hearts 1 CONC with the consolation conveyed by her own words - as lying on her bed of 1 CONC unrest and pain, she was heard to say, "Reest in Heaven." It is with 1 CONC gentle tread and a sympathizing heart that we approach the grief stricken 1 CONC inner circle of her home. The relentless hand of death has torn her from 1 CONC the affectionate embrace of father, mother, brothers, sisters, a devoted 1 CONC husband and two bright, manly sons, yet in the innocence of childhood. 1 CONC Our bereaved hearts, 1 CONT "Be resigned; 1 CONT Bear up, bear on, the end shall tell, 1 CONT The dear Lord ordereth all things well." 1 CONT The beauty of her character shone brightest in the realm of home. Her 1 CONC loyalty and devotion to her husband, which was simply, the spontaneous 1 CONC outgrowth of genuine conjugal felicity, were unsurpassed. Her tender 1 CONC love and wholesome influence over the little boys, whom God had intrusted 1 CONC to her care, are attested by the correct and orderly walk of these 1 CONC children. May the impressions made on their young hearts by their 1 CONC departed mother's counsel and worthy example grow deeper as they grow 1 CONC older, and may our Heavenly Father, who marks the fall of even the 1 CONC helpless sparrow, throw his protecting care around them, to shield them 1 CONC from the evils of this present life, and when their life work is over may 1 CONC they join the mother of their childhood days in the regions of eternal 1 CONC bliss. 0 @I039@ INDI 1 NAME Benjamin Devane /Seacatt/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 12 Jun 1810 2 PLAC Botetourt County, VA 1 DEAT 2 DATE 30 Mar 1883 2 PLAC Lebanon, Russell, VA 1 FAMS @F021@ 1 FAMC @F022@ 1 NOTE @NI039@ 0 @NI039@ NOTE 1 CONC From 'The Heritage of Russell County, Virginia 1786 - 1986, Volume I" 1 CONC 1985. 1 CONT The Seacatt Family: " One of the early wagon makers of Lebanon was my 1 CONC great grandfather, Benjamin Devane Seacatt. Gibson, whose sickness has been mentioned in this paper 1 CONC form time to time, died Friday morning. At the funeral conducted by 1 CONC pastor, Rev. S. T. McPherson, assisted by Rev. In his early life, more than fifty years ago, he professed 1 CONC religion and joined the Methodist Church. He was married June 19th 1855 1 CONC to Miss Mary Jane Leece. This union was blessed with eleven children, 1 CONC four of whom with his dear companion preceded him to better land. For 1 CONC many years he was an official member of the church, a part of the time 1 CONC steward. He was the oldest citizen of our town, though not the oldest 1 CONC man. His citizinship was superb. One said, "As such he was good and 1 CONC worthy. If he had any evil practices they were not known." He was very 1 CONC approachable and affable. He for a long time kept open shop; men 1 CONC gathered there often because of the geniality and friendliness of the 1 CONC man. He could not be provoked to say evil of anyone. While his life was 1 CONC not demonstrable, it has been decided his convictions were carried out in 1 CONC a quite, peacable, law-abiding way. He is commended as an upright man, 1 CONC as much so as any man who ever lived in our county. His life has ended 1 CONC here below but begun in a higher sphere above. In May, when quite sick, 1 CONC his daughter asked him if he realized his condition. He said, "Yes. 1 CONC Don't weep for me. I am ready to go." That is the verdict of his 1 CONC neighbors. 1 CONT On August 16th as the King of day loomed above the eastern horizon, his 1 CONC spirit left the tenement of clay and as we believe approached the Sun of 1 CONC cleared and brighter beams of effulgent glory. 1 CONT Farewell, brother, till we meet again. The home is bereft, the church 1 CONC has lost a substantial member, the children a fond and living father, all 1 CONC a good neighbor, and our town a good citizen, but our loss is his gain. 1 CONT 1 CONT The book contains a picture of Henry. 1 CONT 1 CONT 1850 Census listed as 20 Saddler. 1 CONT 1 CONT 1860 Census 26 Oct 1860 Russell Co VA page 227 1 CONT Henry S. He undoubtedly arrived earlier. On 1 CONC this date he proved right to 50 acres of land for time of service 1 CONC performed in province. On the same date, he purchased 200 acres from 1 CONC Thomas Dent of St. Mary's county. This land was part of a warrant of 1 CONC 1500 acres granted to Dent July 9, 1670. Warrant was then issued to 1 CONC Stephen Cawood for 250 acres returnable May 4, 1671. Armed with this 1 CONC warrant, Stephen took his time in finding a suibable location. His 1 CONC warrant was renewed on Feb 10, 1673-4. On Oct 10, 1674 the warrant was 1 CONC increased by another 200 acres in a transaction by which Charles Calvert 1 CONC issued Stephen another warrant. On the same day, Charles Calvert 1 CONC assigned the following persons who belonged to him to Stephen: George 1 CONC Blackborne, Katherine Blackborne, William Terrett, and Ann Terrett. On 1 CONC Feb 26 of the next year, Stephen signed over interest in this warrant to 1 CONC Henry Bedford. Henry Bedford consolidated this 200 acres with 100 acres 1 CONC based on rights of William and Anne Hargesse and 50 acres assigned by 1 CONC Samuel Walter. This made the warrant 350 acres. On Mar 16 Henry 1 CONC assigned the bigger warrant back to Stephen who now held warrant to 600 1 CONC acres. On May 13, he was granted a warrant for this amount. He chose a 1 CONC location on the main branch of Mattawoman Creed, by a bounded tree of 1 CONC Hull's land called "Hopewell". Patent for this tract was issued May 8, 1 CONC 1676, and the name "Hull" was given it. The plantation lies about 10 1 CONC miles south of the District of Columbia, about 3 miles northwest of the 1 CONC village of Waldorf, and about 5 miles as the crow flies from a point on 1 CONC the Potomac opposite Mount Vernon. A house, claimed in 1926 to be over 1 CONC 200 years old, sits back about a quarter of a mile from the road. If it 1 CONC is that old, it must have been used by Stephen, the son of this 1 CONC immigrant. "Hull" belonged in whole or in part to the Cawoods until 1 CONC about 1790. He died between Oct 7, 1675 when he is mentioned in the will 1 CONC of Giles Cole who had been desperately wounded by the Susquehanna Indians 1 CONC and makes a bequest to Stephen and Oct 9, 1677 when account for this will 1 CONC was presented to his widow. Stephen apparently lost his life in the same 1 CONC war with the Indians. An act of relief for Ann Cawood had been 1 CONC introduced to the House of Delagates on May 16, 1676 and was passed in 1 CONC June. It provided that in consideration of the great poverty of Ann 1 CONC Cawood, widow and relict of Stephen Cawood, 'lately slain in service and 1 CONC defense of this province whose death is the occasion of her and her 1 CONC children's destress' they pay Ann 1500 pounds of tobacco per year for 1 CONC three years for her and her children (Maryland Archives, Vol II, page 1 CONC 563.) 1 CONT The Susquehannock Indian war lasted from 1675 to 1676 on the borders of 1 CONC Virginia and Maryland. The Marylanders were led by Major Thomas Truman 1 CONC and the Virginians by Col. John Washington, great grandfather of George. 1 CONC The main event of the war was the siege of Susquehannock Fort from Sep 25 1 CONC or 26 1675 until about Nov 4, 1675. This fort was located where the 1 CONC Piscataway Creek meets the Potomac, directly across the Potomac from 1 CONC Mount Vernon. Between 50 and 100 colonists lost their lives in this 1 CONC battle. Among these were Giles Cole and Stephen Cawood (probably). 1 CONC Ann's maiden name of Terrett comes from Richard Lawrence Cawood who says 1 CONC so in a book with no evidence to support it. The pension granted Ann may 1 CONC have been one of the very first, if not the first, granted in this 1 CONC country. However, it was repealed in November 1678. Ann probably 1 CONC married again.
