1 NOTE Gary LaVern Corlew, Sr. is a lawyer in Joliet. He attended Joliet Junior

1 NOTE Elvin LaVern Corlew enlisted in the navy in 1943 when he was seventeen
2 CONT years old. He served in World War II as a machinist's mate in the Pacific
2 CONT theater. When he was discharged in 1946, he was a third class petty
2 CONT officer. In 1948 he moved from Morris, Illinois to nearby Joliet, where he
2 CONT started working for Barrett's, a retail hardware store, as a sales clerk.
2 CONT His starting pay was $35.00 per week.   When he left in 1970, he was
2 CONT vice-president and treasurer. From 1970 until he retired in 1987, he
2 CONT worked at Barrett Hardware Company, a wholesale hardware business,
2 CONT also in Joliet. He first served as vice-president, and later as president.
2 CONT For about five years after he retired from Barrett Hardware, he worked
2 CONT part-time for Expert Optics, in Shorwood, repairing eye glass frames.
2 CONT Elvin was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Lions Club and later the
2 CONT Rotary Club. In 1977 he moved to Shorewood, Illinois.

1 NOTE Franklin Earnest Corlew served in the navy during World War I for
2 CONT fourteen months and was stationed at Pensacola, Florida.  He briefly
2 CONT taught high school after the war.   He and his wife moved from Missouri
2 CONT to rural Minooka, Illinois shortly after they were married. He first was
2 CONT manager of a Maytag appliance store in Morris, Illinois, and then a Maytag
2 CONT repairman there. From about 1934 to 1939 Franklin lived near
2 CONT Goodlettsville, Tennessee, and then moved back to Illinois. In about 1958
2 CONT he again moved to near Goodlettsville, where he lived until he died 17
2 CONT years later. Franklin was a member of the Assemblies of God church.

1 NOTE Middle name was either "Watson", "Wesley" or "Weston". He was a farmer.
2 CONT He was a second grade school teacher in Stoddard county, Missouri in
2 CONT 1887. Later, he and his wife, Eliza Anna Nichols moved to Texas. From
2 CONT there, they moved to Oklahoma, when it was still Indian territory, and
2 CONT they lived in the Creek Nation and Chickasha Nation.  John and Eliza had
2 CONT nine children. Eliza died of pneumonia in 1900 near Shawnee, Olklahoma
2 CONT when she was only 37 years old. Then, the youngest child was only four
2 CONT months old. Upon her death, John left his family and the area for about a
2 CONT year to work, He hired a housekeeper to help take care of his children.
2 CONT His two oldest daughters were 17 and 15 when their mother died and
2 CONT they helped raise their siblings. Later, John and his children returned to
2 CONT Missouri. In about 1914 or 1915, John married Nancy Bingham, but she
2 CONT did not get along well with John's two youngest daughters. In less than a
2 CONT year they separated, and never lived together again. John died in 1917 in
2 CONT Dexter, Missouri, and was buried in Triplet cemetery, near the grave of
2 CONT his mother.

2 CONT told this by his two oldest sisters, Cora and Ora.  Eliza died of pneumonia

1 NOTE William W. Corlew was only 3 years old when his father died in
2 CONT December 1827. A court case was filed against Mary, apparently for the
2 CONT neglect of her children. A rule was entered for her to show cause why her
2 CONT children should not be bound out. The case was postponed several times.
2 CONT Finally, Mary lost custody of her children. William was bound out to
2 CONT Logan Howard when he was nine years old and was taught how to be a
2 CONT farmer.
2 CONT Sometime prior to 1851 William and his sister moved to the area
2 CONT around Shawneetown, Elizabethtown, and Cave In Rock. This is in
2 CONT southern Illinois, near the Ohio river, and just over the border from
2 CONT Kentucky. It is known that for quite some time he lived in a neighborhood
2 CONT called Potts Hill,  which is about 10 miles north of Cave In Rock. This
2 CONT was a very unruly area where the people were divided into warring
2 CONT factions. Shootings, and other crimes were common. Many travelers were
2 CONT afraid to pass through this area and feared being harmed or robbed.
2 CONT We know that William moved to Illinois by 1850, because on March 21st
2 CONT of that year he married Elizabeth Barlow in Gallatin county, Illinois.
2 CONT Nothing further is known of this marriage. About 1855 William married
2 CONT Louisa Ann Dutton, through whom this family tree continues.
2 CONT William had a bad temper and often Louisa Ann would hide from him in
2 CONT the woods. William was a farmer , and had a domestic servant living in
2 CONT his household.  It is said that he was also a General Baptist minister.  He
2 CONT had quite a large following and people would come great distances on
2 CONT foot or horseback to hear him preach.   He was also a doctor.  When he
2 CONT made house calls he rode his gray horse with his spotted dog following.
2 CONT When the medicine wouldn't work he would get down on his knees and
2 CONT pray for his patients.
2 CONT The book, entitled The Life of Logan Belt was written by Shadrach L.
2 CONT Jackson and was published in 1888. This book describes many crimes
2 CONT that Logan Belt was allegedly involved in, including the murder of
2 CONT Samuel H. Dorris in 1870.  Belt was one of the founders of the Cave In
2 CONT Rock chapter of the Ku Klux Klan according to Jackson.  William and Belt
2 CONT were neighbors and knew each other at least as early as 1867.  Regarding
2 CONT the Dorris murder,
1 NOTE  It was suspected at the time that Belt either did the shooting or was
2 CONT along, and he was arrested. He proved an alibi, however, by two
2 CONT witnesses, and was discharged. The two witnesses were two
2 CONT desperadoes, Maribles and Bill Corlew...Corlew has since proven his
2 CONT character as a witness by running away with another man's wife...While
2 CONT there is no proof, therefore, that Logan Belt is the guilty man, nearly
2 CONT everybody believes firmly that he knows something about it.
1 NOTE Shortly after giving his statement as a witness, William and his family
2 CONT moved to Essex, Missouri, which is in Stoddard county, in the
2 CONT southeastern corner of state.   His testimony apparently was not popular
2 CONT in his community, and this may have been a factor in his move.  Many
2 CONT persons had to move out of the area for their personal safety because of
2 CONT their involvement with Logan Belt.
2 CONT William was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Bloomfield, Missouri.
2 CONT While in Missouri, he and Louisa Ann were divorced.  Apparently, Louisa
2 CONT Ann remained bitter for many years.
2 CONT  On April 14, 1875, he married a woman named Mary in Pulaski county,
2 CONT Illinois.  They separated on October 28, 1877 and were divorced on March
2 CONT 13, 1878 in Stoddard county, Missouri.
2 CONT  On March 14, 1878 he married Rebecca Kirby.  With Rebecca he started
2 CONT his second family of three children. The first child was born when he
2 CONT was 55 and the third and last when he was 61, just a year before he died.
2 CONT He is buried in Bloomfield cemetery.

1 NOTE Abner Dutton (1803-1887) is the son of Asahel Dutton and Lydia Moss. In
2 CONT 1832 he married Elizabeth Taylor. They had thirteen children. Abner was
2 CONT one of the earliest General Baptist ministers in Hardin county, Illinois,
2 CONT which is adjacent to Gallatin county. The 1850 census shows Abner and
2 CONT his family residing in Hardin county. He was also a farmer. Once Abner
2 CONT took a load of cattle on a boat to New Orleans, where he sold them.
2 CONT Before he could get back to Illinois, some men robbed him of his money.
2 CONT 	The following note appeared about Abner Dutton in the Hardin Gazette
2 CONT newspaper for January 28, 1881:
1 NOTE 		Uncle Abner Dutton making as good showing as any
2 CONT 		in his clearing, and he cuts the timber himself,
2 CONT 		mostly. He will be 78 years old next May and
2 CONT 		yet he is chipper as many young men.

1 NOTE He was probably born about 1774 since his parents were married in
2 CONT November 1772, his father died in 1776 and his wife was born in 1774.
2 CONT His place of birth was probably Woodbury, Connecticut since that was
2 CONT where his parents were married.
2 CONT 	In about 1780, four of Sarah's brothers moved from Connecticut to
2 CONT Poultney, Rutland county, Vermont. It seems likely that the young widow
2 CONT Sarah and her young son Asahel also moved to Poultney at that time. She
2 CONT married a man named Northrop of Middletown, Vermont.  Middletown and
2 CONT Poultney are adjacent towns.  It is probable that Asahel met and married
2 CONT Lydia Moss (also sometimes written as Morse or Morse) (1774-1835)
2 CONT while in Poultney. Lydia's family had moved from Canaan, Conntecticut to
2 CONT Poultney in 1780. Lydia and her parents moved to Bradford county,
2 CONT Pennsylvania in 1800.
2 CONT 	In 1800 Asahel was living in Ulster township, Luzerne county,
2 CONT Pennsylvania.  Ulster township is now a part of Bradford county. The
2 CONT earliest known reference to Asahel and Lydia being husband and wife is
2 CONT an 1801 baptismal record for one of their nine children.  In 1808 Asahel
2 CONT settled in the western part of Smithfield township, Lycoming county.
2 CONT Smithfield township is also now a part of Bradford county. An 1813 tax
2 CONT assessment listed his occupation as cooper (barrel maker).
2 CONT 	Asahel and Lydia were members of the Congregational Church of
2 CONT Smithfield township, as were Lydia's father, Solomon Moss; step-mother,
2 CONT Jemima Parker Moss, and some of Lydia's siblings. Solomon and Jemima
2 CONT Parker were two of the six founding members of the church in 1801.
2 CONT   In 1814 Asahel and Lydia sold two parcels of land in Bradford county,
2 CONT one being 99 acres and the other being 198 acres. It was around that
2 CONT time that they moved to the vicinity of Shawneetown, Gallatin county,
2 CONT Illinois. Gallatin county is just across the Ohio river from Kentucky.  It
2 CONT is believed that Asahel died in Gallatin county about 1821.

1 NOTE Amos Frisbie (1729-1811) was the son of Ebenezer Frisbie and Joanna
2 CONT Baldwin. He moved from Branford to Bethlehem, Connecticut in 1757. He
2 CONT first married Mary Luddington. In 1791 he married Eleanor Alling. He
2 CONT served as deacon in his church. He served in the French and Indian War
2 CONT and also the Revolutionary War. In May 1776 he was appointed ensign of
2 CONT the 5th company, 13th regiment. Ensign at that time was a rank between
2 CONT sergeant and lieutenant. He served under Captain Dunning from August 12
2 CONT to September 30 in 1776 in New York. He was appointed lieutenant in
2 CONT 1777 and captain in 1782.

1 NOTE   Although there is no documentation, there is a strong possibility  that
2 CONT Edward Frisbie (abt. 1621-    ) was the son of Richard Frisbie and
2 CONT Margaret Emerson. The earliest record of Edward Frisbie is on a list of
2 CONT property owners in December 1646 in the town records of Totokett (later
2 CONT called Branford) in New Haven Colony. New Haven Colony later became
2 CONT part of Connecticut.
2 CONT 	Edward was probably married by mid-1649 as his first child was born
2 CONT in July 1650. The name of his wife is unknown. Edward was probably
2 CONT basically a farmer, but he probably did a variety of work. In 1661 he was
2 CONT sued for inadequetely thatching a roof. His estate papers after he died
2 CONT inidicate that he may have also been involved in making nails.
2 CONT 	A land grant to Edward in 1671 referred to him as "Goodman Frisbie."
2 CONT This may have shown that he had been able to improve his economic
2 CONT status. "Goodman" was a courtesy title accorded to a yeoman, and a
2 CONT yeoman was a step above a laborer or husbandman, but a step below a
2 CONT gentleman. The corresponding title to a yeoman's wife was "Goodwife" or
2 CONT "Goody". During his lifetime he acquired considerable real estate.
2 CONT 	In 1639 he was appointed pounder and in was appointed fence viewer in
2 CONT 1681. Pounde and fence viewer were two of several civic jobs at which
2 CONT every townsman was expected to take his turn. In 1685 he built a new
2 CONT house on the Old Bost Post Road on the eastern outskirts of Branford.
2 CONT Known as "Hearthstone", it was still standing in 1984.
2 CONT 	When Edward died, his estate was valued at 317 pounds, a comfortable
2 CONT sum for his day. This amount does not include the gifts of land and money
2 CONT which he made to his children during his lifetime. He never learned how
2 CONT to write, for he signed his will by a mark, but he left his family well
2 CONT provided for. The will was signed in October 1689 and Edward died on
2 CONT May 10, 1690. Edward was thrifty and provident, for in the fall before he
2 CONT died he had already laid in his year's supply of grain and had set aside
2 CONT "six fatting swine and a fat Beast" for his family to live on during the
2 CONT coming winter.

1 NOTE   The name of Frisbie is an English place name. It is the name of two
2 CONT manors in Leicestershire, England recorded in the Doomsday Book which
2 CONT was compiled in 1086.It is a family name in Leicestershire as early as
2 CONT 1239.
2 CONT 	This family name is spelled different ways including Frisbie, Frisbee,
2 CONT and Frisby.
2 CONT 	Richard Frisbie was married to Margaret Emerson. They came from
2 CONT England to Virginia in 1620.  In 1625 they returned to London, where
2 CONT Edward Frisbie is found in the registers of St. James Clerkenwell until
2 CONT December 1634. He disappears from church records after that. It is quite
2 CONT possible that he returned to America in 1635 as part of the "Great
2 CONT Puritian Migration" to New England. However, there is no record of
2 CONT Edward returning to America.  This is not surprising since many people
2 CONT died on the journey across the ocean, and the names of many who did
2 CONT survive the cruise are not known.  Nearly 20,000 persons immigrated to
2 CONT New England between 1628 and 1640, and about 5,000 came in the single
2 CONT year of 1635. Of that number, we know the names of only about
2 CONT one-quarter of them.
