After a short illness, she passed away last Friday evening at the 2 CONT age of 72 years, 11 months, and 1 day. She was born February 10, 1856, at 2 CONT Settrup, in Hanover, Germany, where she also spend the days of her youth. 2 CONT In 1882, she came to this country and made her home in Buckley. The same 2 CONT year, she was married to Fred Sprehe, her surviving husband. The Lord 2 CONT blessed them with nine children; three of them preceded her in death. For 2 CONT many years she lived with her family on the farm. Thirteen years ago she 2 CONT and her husband retired from farm life and made theire home in the village. 2 CONT The deceased mother was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church 2 CONT and was a member of our congretation [St. John's Lutheran, Buckley, 2 CONT Illinois] all the years she lived in this community. Fearlessly she 2 CONT confessed her faith in the Lord and always delighted to hear His Word. 2 CONT Regularly she attended divine service and was to her family and to others 2 CONT a truly Christian example. From God's Word she received comfort and 2 CONT strength even in her sickness. She trusted solely in Christ and His 2 CONT merits and in such faith she passed away. She is now with the Lord to 2 CONT enjoy what she believed and hoped. 2 CONT Her departure is mourned by her bereaved husband, four sons, one 2 CONT stepson, two daughters, thirty-five grandchildren, one great grandchild, 2 CONT and other relatives and friends. Gross - died Feb 10th 1949 2 CONT 2 CONT PREFACE 2 CONT 2 CONT Annual Family Reunions growing in favor, the Krumwiede family succeeded 2 CONT in effecting an organization, and for several years also held Family 2 CONT Reunions, either in some convenient grove, or park, or in the Town Hall 2 CONT of Buckley, Illinois. 2 CONT In course of time the family had grown so in numbers and had branched 2 CONT out to such extent that it became more difficult from year to year to 2 CONT keep an accurate Registration List of all members, running through 5 2 CONT generations, giving their full and correct names, their location and 2 CONT occupation. 2 CONT The suggestion to cause the writing of a brief history of this 2 CONT prominent family and to add a genealogy to (unreadable) arrangements took 2 CONT root. Messers. Geo A. Krumwiede, Aug. F. Krumwiede, Martin Hilgendorf, 2 CONT and Mrs. Frank Luhrsen were chosen to be members of a committee. Object 2 CONT and purpose were to have the afore named work as intended to. This 2 CONT Committee met with J.M. Gross in the autumn of 1940, and asked him to 2 CONT carry out their wishes for the family with their assistance. All gladly 2 CONT agreed to begin on this task, hoping that others will help out. 2 CONT 2 CONT This Family History and the Geneology is worthy of the effort. 2 CONT 2 CONT HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES 2 CONT 2 CONT In the early part of the last century, political, economic and social 2 CONT conditions in Europe were similar to those we are facing at the present 2 CONT time. Then as now there was much unrest in the world. The land of our 2 CONT fore fathers was torn by internal strife. In relatively small Germany, 2 CONT small in area, dense in population, there were four Kingdoms, five 2 CONT Duchies, six Grand Duchies, and more principalities. The country then 2 CONT was, and is now, over populated. Comparing the area in square miles of 2 CONT the United States of America with that of Germany, and the population of 2 CONT 130 million to that of Germany about 60 million, we get an idea and have 2 CONT a background for better and clearer intelligent understanding of that 2 CONT situation. 2 CONT Each political division in the homeland had its own Reichstag, or 2 CONT handtag, its own government, its legislative, judicial, and executive 2 CONT branches. Each had its own tax system, its own excise duty and tariff 2 CONT laws, to procure and secure the necessary revenues for necessary 2 CONT governmental expenditures and disbursements. You could not travel very 2 CONT far before you would be at the boundary line of your domain. You were 2 CONT leaving a political territory and entering another. Custom officials 2 CONT stand ready to examine you, to inspect your belongings, your luggage, 2 CONT exacting your dues and duties. Each Kingdom, each Duchy or principality 2 CONT had postal regulations of its own, its own monetary system. 2 CONT In Hanover, people sp0ke "Hanovorsch, Plattdaush." So did the people in 2 CONT East and West Friesia, in Schlesweig-Hostein, in Pommerania and 2 CONT elsewhere. But what a difference when these people wanted to read Fritz 2 CONT Reuter, the beloved author in Mecklenburg; they wondered what kind of 2 CONT German jargon he was propounding. But that was not all - in Saxony, the 2 CONT people spoke German, too, also in Bavaria and in Swabia, but all had 2 CONT great trouble understanding each other. 2 CONT Churches and schools all were under rigorous State regulations and 2 CONT control. No individual had any choice of selection, all were subject to 2 CONT the limitations and restrictions of the king, the duke, and prince. We 2 CONT Americans here, in the land and home of freedom and liberty, FREE Speech, 2 CONT free press, free schools, freedom in all religions, even in political 2 CONT exercise, we cannot easily visualize, cannot truly realize such conditions. 2 CONT Everything was taxed. There had to be a license for everything. 2 CONT Everything was either "geboten" or "verboten." Born and reared in one 2 CONT Dorf, you perhaps never would see the next village, though it was 2 CONT possibly only a Halba Stunda Antfarnt. Likely not until you had grown 2 CONT into young manhood or young womanhood and had grown into a journeyman, 2 CONT into a Handwerdsbursche, when it becam an inexorable obligation to travel 2 CONT by foot for the purpose of learning, improving in your handicraft under 2 CONT various Meisters and under varying prevailing social and economic 2 CONT conditions (would one see "the world"). But in this schooling one well 2 CONT learned his trade or profession. Learning this or that implied 2 CONT mastership in manual skill. In these journies one would widen his 2 CONT intellectual horizon; one would learn geography - Haimats Kunda, history - 2 CONT Volksgechichta, political economy, art, and polish. Germany's great 2 CONT Goethe said, "Raltur Lernt Manimstrom Deslebens; Waishait in DarStille." 2 CONT A young person about to begin life's mission had to be buffed and 2 CONT re-buffed to learn customs, manners, courtesy, deportment, polity, and 2 CONT adaptability, be prepared to meet and overcome adversities. 2 CONT Mother Earth could not nourish all of her children in Germany. The soil 2 CONT on the whole was depleted or was poor and unproductive. Only by extreme 2 CONT diligence, only by exercising frugality, self-denial, contentment, could 2 CONT one sustain life and livelihood. People arose at 4 a.m. and went to work, 2 CONT and were still at work at near midnight hours; during daylight, out in 2 CONT the open, in the small alotted fields; after sundown in the barns, 2 CONT flaying, threshing, shredding, grinding - men, women and children alike. 2 CONT Others were spinning wool or flax, weaving, knitting in their Stube. Work 2 CONT work, work, and little play. But, they were happy and kept themselves 2 CONT thus by cheerful song. Yes, singing released dimay and cheered their souls. 2 CONT Coarse, dark bread, potatoes boiled in their jackets, clabber milk, all 2 CONT in scant proportions, appeared rarely, only on holidays at Christmas, 2 CONT Easter, Penticost. Yet, there was content and gratitude. Under such 2 CONT distressing hardships our forebearors grew up. Such was life to our 2 CONT fathers and mothers - our ancesotrs in the European Vaterland. And never 2 CONT the less by the grace and providence of the Heavely Father as they grew 2 CONT in age and stature they grew also in Grace and knowledge of our Lord and 2 CONT Saviour; their hearts were strong and devoted. Adversity teaches praying. 2 CONT That prayerful attitude, their faith, and hope was their mainstay, their 2 CONT sustenance and substance. Mit Gott kann manueberdiemauan springan 2 CONT glaugans zuversicht varfetzt barga. 2 CONT Our parents were instructed in the Word of God. This they revered, this 2 CONT they held sacred. They knew, they feared and loved the Lord. His 2 CONT commandments and His many promises: The Law and the Gospel was their 2 CONT Chart, their guiding beacon star. They were Christians, and theirs was a 2 CONT functioning Christianity. On that rested and still rests a divine 2 CONT blessing. We can never sufficiently thank our fathers and mothers and our 2 CONT Lord for the Christian training they received and we received through and 2 CONT by them. Ponder on that thought deeply, long and often. That training is 2 CONT factually worth more than great wealth in things material, transitory and 2 CONT perishable as these are, besides destructive in abuse. 2 CONT Do not undervalue the divine gift of song, of singing. The elder 2 CONT Krumwiedies loved to sing. Singing is a culture, an elixer of life, 2 CONT conducive to longevity; it strengthens both body and soul. Sing heartily 2 CONT daily, and everywhere. 2 CONT Our parents had learned to read, to write, to think, great and 2 CONT beneficient accomplishments, most especially the latter. They, too, felt 2 CONT and knew that all men are created free and equal. Nackand Kaman Wirzur 2 CONT Walt Bar undnackd ziehan wir won Danaan. From relatives and friends that 2 CONT had made the trans-Atlantic voyage, from newspapers, from literature sent 2 CONT by American railroad companies that had been granted great tracts of land 2 CONT and were for their own benefit more than willing not only to sell their 2 CONT land at acceptable figures, but offered other material aid, providing 2 CONT funds for traveling expenses, for building purposes, for agricutltural 2 CONT implements, seeds and the like, (came information that) set our 2 CONT forefathers to thinking. When so many in the New World were pleased with 2 CONT their lot in the new home in the great United States of America, were 2 CONT prospering, why should not they, in the prime of life, vigorous, robust, 2 CONT eager to work, nothing to lose, much to gain, follow the lure and the 2 CONT dictates of common sense and sound judgement. Counseling with their 2 CONT devoted parents, with their loved ones, the problem was soon solved and 2 CONT anxiety allayed. 2 CONT In Deutschland, the discovery of gold - nuggets of pure gold - in 2 CONT astonishing supplies in the sands of California streams, caused great 2 CONT excitement - a fervor. This too gave impetus to a great exodus of German 2 CONT young men and far-sighted young women to the land of the Golden Fleece. 2 CONT Among the many whose hearts were stirred, who banished temerity, who felt 2 CONT that opportunity was knocking at their door, who had developed an 2 CONT impelling migratory spirit, experiencing the impulsive force of the 2 CONT Wander lust, among such as these were the Krumwiede brothers Henry, 2 CONT Frederick, William, and August. 2 CONT Henry K. Krumwiede - grandpa, great-grandpa - decided to take an 2 CONT important step in life, severing family ties and embarking on that 2 CONT trans-oceanic voyage for weal or woe. He decided to take the young maiden 2 CONT he loved so dearly, Sophia Dorothy Sternberg along. Arrangements were 2 CONT promptly made for the wedding. Pastor C. Hausonann of the Lutheran Church 2 CONT Hagen, in the former Kingdom of Hanover, Germany, officiated. 2 CONT The young couple disliked leaving their aged parents, bidding them 2 CONT farewell, perhaps forever. And the old folks, feeling need of comfort and 2 CONT support by their children, agreed to emigrate with them. Mr. and Mrs. 2 CONT Henry Konrad Krumwiede entered the matrimonial state on August 4, 1854. 2 CONT Henry K. Krumwiede was born in Wendenborst [I have reason to believe 2 CONT that the correct name of this town is Wedenborstel. See communication 2 CONT from Sharlene Miller following this document-LB] in Amte Woelpe (the 2 CONT judicial district of Woelpe), in Hanover, Germany, on April 10, 1834. 2 CONT A few old records and inscriptions in the Family Bible, now in the 2 CONT hands of the youngest and only surviving son George A. Krumwiede of 2 CONT Buckley, Illinois, indicated that Mrs. Henry K. Krumwiede nee Sternberg 2 CONT (Sophia Dorothea) was born May 14, 1834 at Wolpke in Hanover, Germany. 2 CONT According to the documents, the parents of Mrs. Henry K. Krumwiede were 2 CONT Juergena Heinrich Sterenberg and Dorothea Louise Schneeweiss. When these 2 CONT were born and where, we were unable to establish. No doubt, they too 2 CONT were natives of Hanover. 2 CONT The Krumwiedes had relatives and friends that had settled in America 2 CONT years before. These were living in the Summit Lyons community, in close 2 CONT vicinity to Chicago, the young but fast-growing future metropolis of the 2 CONT Midwest. Naturally, communications with these relatives were cherished. 2 CONT The preparatory arrangements were made for establishing a home for the 2 CONT young couple and the aged parents. 2 CONT By steamship, this little group and many other emigrants made the 2 CONT hazardous trip across the briny deep, for the port of Baltimore, 2 CONT Maryland. By railroad, they proceeded to Chicago, and then to their 2 CONT waiting relatives near Summit, Cook County, Illinois, in 1856. [This date 2 CONT is seriously suspect. Given the date of marriage above, it is more 2 CONT likely to have been 1836.-LB] In that same year, the Illinois Central 2 CONT Railroad Co., in order to develop the rich country-side of Illinois, had 2 CONT been given a grant of land by the Federal government, four miles in width 2 CONT through the approximate center of which a railroad was to be built and 2 CONT operated. That new railroad was then building from Chicago to Champaign, 2 CONT to be extended to the Gulf of Mexico eventually. The Railroad Company 2 CONT had this land surveyed and divided into sections and was offering this 2 CONT fine farm land for sale at attractive prices per acre, with a promise to 2 CONT loan money and to otherwise assist worthy home builders. 2 CONT The Krumwiedes obviously had visions of a prosperous future, cheap but 2 CONT rich land near a railroad, and an excellent market in Chicago. Land was 2 CONT cheaper her in Iroquois County than in Cook County. Encouraged by their 2 CONT wise parents, the Krumwiedes agreed to make their future home in Iroquois 2 CONT County, neach Buckley (then called Bulkley). A tract of land partly 2 CONT wooded, along a main Creek (spring) about a mile as the crow flies east 2 CONT of the Village of Buckley, Illinois, was chosen. The site was 2 CONT well-chosen. The rovolet as an outlet offered excellent drainage and a 2 CONT constant supply of soft water. And that grove of hardwood trees offered 2 CONT not only a generous supply of building material, lumber, fence posts, 2 CONT planks, but also pasturage and food (a plentious supply of hickory and 2 CONT walnuts, acorns, buckeyes, and possibly plums and wild berries). The land 2 CONT being a sanctuary for thousands of birds, migrating pigeons in 2 CONT multitudes, and for fur bearing animals, the family had a bounteous 2 CONT supply of excellent food. The stately trees mad an ideal break for the 2 CONT chilling west and northeast winds, not to mention the shade in hot summer 2 CONT days and an ever-present kaleidoscope of pageantry in the sylvan 2 CONT presentation. 2 CONT On the east edge of that grove to the south of the highway, some ten 2 CONT rods, a log house was erected from logs hewn in the hard, big woods. That 2 CONT was a cozy home, and their own. Klain-abar Main. Whether Mr. Henry 2 CONT Krumwiede built that log cabin or not could not be definitely ascertained 2 CONT by the narrator. 2 CONT Pleny of evidences were found, and are yet found, that real American 2 CONT Indians, the Illini Tribe, had their tepees along that creek, and in 2 CONT those wooded recesses. 2 CONT As far as the writer could learn in his researches, no other family of 2 CONT German extraction had settled here up to that time. 2 CONT It may be of appealing interest to the progeny of the Henry Krumwiede 2 CONT and August Krumwiede families to insert a few notations, realizing "Who 2 CONT was Who" in those early hears of Buckley communal life and what were 2 CONT their activities; what were the social and economic pursuits? The 2 CONT following, some of which had gone to farming here and others into 2 CONT business enterprises as necessities required, and others named here, 2 CONT came from the Atlantic border states, some from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and 2 CONT Indiana. 2 CONT From a volume on Iroquois County Gleanings some 60 years ago, the 2 CONT writer notes: E. Ruehe. 2 CONT Other early residents were: Dr. M. Butler, J.M. Hueston, L.L. Marsh 2 CONT (Mason), W.H. Cleave (Saddler), Woodruff Beals, G. Schleh, L.H. Hamlin, 2 CONT James Petty, John S. Freeman, A.B. Ruehe, Robert Watt. Some of these held 2 CONT official positions on the Artesia Township organization or in the 2 CONT municipality of Buckley. 2 CONT Even in the early colonial years, a community brass band had been 2 CONT organized under the leadershipo f A.H. Ruehe, with the following 2 CONT composition: A.H. Ruehe, E-flat cornet; F. Kerns, E-flat; J.G. McClave, 2 CONT E-flat; W.H. Cleave, B-Flat; J.M. Carter, B-flat; E.W. William (General 2 CONT Warren), first alto; Henry Wm. Krumwiede, second alto; J.D. Riggs, tenor; 2 CONT J.F. Foster, tuba; W.S. Marsh, bass drum; Elija Pierce, tenor drum. 2 CONT The still-active "Farmers Pioneer Fire and Lightning Insurance Company 2 CONT of Buckley" was organized November 19, 1874, and is in a flourising 2 CONT condition today (February, 1941), now 67 years old. 2 CONT Elmer and Elwin Hull, natives of Delaware County Ohio, came her in 185? 2 CONT as boys. D.W.F. Horner of Pennsylvania and later of Ohio and Indiana, 2 CONT located in Ash Grove in 1853, and 19 years later in 1871, moved to 2 CONT Buckley. William McClave bought his fine farm lands in 1854, at $2.50 2 CONT per acre from the government land office at Danville, Illinois. 2 CONT Another old settlers was C.W. Sprague (July, 1862). John A. Koplin had 2 CONT the village of Buckley surveyed, and he and Wm. G. Riggs opened the first 2 CONT store in the village. Mr. Koplin was a member of the 30th General 2 CONT Assembly of Illinois. J.H. Martin and M.M. Meacham were Buckley 2 CONT druggists. W.L.R. Johnson was in the grain business. Mr. Johnson was a 2 CONT member of the Illinois Legislature, the newspapers proclaiming him the 2 CONT most handsome man in the Assembly. 2 CONT The Methodist Church was organized by the Rev. T. Thomas Cotton through 2 CONT the exertions of William G. Riggs, about 1860. 2 CONT The Presbyterian Church was organized May 19, 1870 and dedicated in 2 CONT August, 1872. 2 CONT A number of German families from Downers Grove, Bennsonville, and 2 CONT Addison Illinois came into the Buckley community in 1869. Among these 2 CONT were Frederick Luhrsen, William Ahlden, Henry and Louis Volverding 2 CONT (Volmerding?). These longed for regular Divine services. Services were 2 CONT held now and then either in the public school house or in private homes. 2 CONT Among the several pastors that came here to preach to the German people 2 CONT was Rev. Suessof of Melvin, Illinois. 2 CONT The Village of Buckley "by a vote of 4 to 6," decided for incorporation 2 CONT as a body politic. At the first meeting of the Board, Eli Strawn was 2 CONT chosen President. J.D. Riggs was elected Clerk, E.D. Hartshorn as 2 CONT Treasurer, Franklin Pierce, Constable, and John Heaney Street Commissioner. 2 CONT General E.W. Warren owned and managed the Buckley Inquirer, a local 2 CONT newspaper in 1868. 2 CONT Of course, much more could be stated, but this is not to be a history 2 CONT of Buckley. The preceding paragraphs may appear as a digression. The 2 CONT abstraction to serve as a background and to add to the picture as spice 2 CONT to life. Our aim has been to give a glimpse into the life of this 2 CONT community at an early day in its life when the hamlet was in its infancy. 2 CONT In this picture, we behold and follow our trail blazers, Messrs. Henry 2 CONT and August Krumwiede and their compatriots, their contemporaries. 2 CONT The early settlers were men and women of hardy stock; people of 2 CONT virility and integrity; good foundation stones upon which to carry on the 2 CONT building of the community. They were an active, aggressive, and 2 CONT enterprising set. They left these foot prints in indelible demarcations. 2 CONT From them, from their activities, from their objectives, we learn a 2 CONT valuable lesson. They did the gound work, the basic process. They set 2 CONT the plumb line. Let us follow it. Let us, who are chips of the old block, 2 CONT hew to the line. 2 CONT The Krumwiede brothers August and Henry, and their devoted wives, 2 CONT brought with them the embodiment of fine Christian training. They knew 2 CONT and knew well the cardinal doctrines of the Holy Scriptures, the chief 2 CONT articles of the Christian faith. Strong and unflinching in their 2 CONT convictions, a firm belief in "A Mighty Fortress is Our God," they were 2 CONT safely anchored and feared nothing. That truly was an inestimable asset - 2 CONT one that thieves cannot take nor moth destroy. The elder Krumwiedes lived 2 CONT that faith, their staunch characters bore testimony to this fact. It is a 2 CONT matter of pride and heartfelt satisfaction to note that their posterity, 2 CONT their sons and daughters are types of the prototype. There are now four 2 CONT generations. Does not this clearly verify and substantiate what Dr. 2 CONT Martin Luther so nicely says in his exposition of "The Close of the Ten 2 CONT Commandments", " Showing Mercy and Grace unto Thousands of them (Bis in 2 CONT Tausand glied) that love Me and keep My commandments." Such blessed 2 CONT promises. 2 CONT In their log cabin, in its charming environment by the brook and the 2 CONT woods, Father and Mother Krumwiede lived happily. They had no modern 2 CONT conveniences, no electric power and light, no radio, no telephone, no 2 CONT horseless carriage, but they had a mission and ideal purpose. They felt 2 CONT the guiding and sustaining hand of their Lord. They had knowledge that 2 CONT was Power, Invincible Power. 2 CONT In the course of time, the family grew in numbers, but also in 2 CONT opulence. Wie Die Olzwvega SaSzan Dea Kindar Umdan Tisch Har; quoting the 2 CONT Psalmist, "The tree grew and had many branches." The home was home to 2 CONT all, but more room was necessary. A new home was built, of ample 2 CONT dimension. A two-story frame with an L addition, basement, and garret. 2 CONT This was a great and a greatly appreciated improvement. That residence is 2 CONT still standing and is in excellenet condition. It now is the home of Mr. 2 CONT Leo Kottke and family. 2 CONT When the Henry Krumwiedes settled here, there was no church of any 2 CONT denomination. The want was keenly felt. Under such circumstances, the 2 CONT Family Altar was used the more but was not a heart-satisfying supply 2 CONT (Gleich und gleich geseltsich gern). More families moved into this rich 2 CONT section of agriculture. Filial souls met. These newcomers also longed for 2 CONT regular divine services for spiritual care. 2 CONT Occasionally, a so-called circuit rider would appear and offer to 2 CONT preach a sermon and, incidentally, to baptize what children were brought 2 CONT for that purpose. One of these was a Pastor Meier. 2 CONT A little group would assemble in the public shcool hourse or in one of 2 CONT the homes. But there seemed to be a deficiency in the sermons of these 2 CONT pastors; there was not the wanted essence of the Law and Gospel. Their 2 CONT sermonizing on the doctrine of Justification did not ring true; in short, 2 CONT it was not genuinely Lutheran. Our friends heard of the Lutheran Chruch 2 CONT in Kankakee, or Rev. Mueller in Champaign, and of Rev. Lindemann and Rev. 2 CONT Schuessler in Joliet. These preached here occasionally by invitation. 2 CONT From these the starving souls got what they were praying for. 2 CONT Rev. Suess over in Melvin, an orthodox Lutheran pastor, came over to 2 CONT offer his services. The old pastor many times made trips to Buckley in 2 CONT all kinds of weather, and back, and even up to Milks Grove northeast of 2 CONT Gilman, and always on foot. Rev. Suess worked faithfully, but was called 2 CONT to a charge in Texas. 2 CONT Again, the little flock was without a shepherd. However, they now knew 2 CONT where to get good advice. The pastors of Kankakee and Joliet were called 2 CONT for counsel and assistance. The budding congregation was told to apply 2 CONT for a young pastor - for a graduate of Concordia College in Springfield, 2 CONT Illinois. That was done, and the prayers of these Christians was heard 2 CONT faster and in a greater measure than they anticipated. 2 CONT When the college faculty at Springfield read the information received 2 CONT from the Rev. Mueller and Rev. Schuessler, they decided to act promptly. 2 CONT Not to wait for graduation day in June, but then, in May, young Rev. 2 CONT George Blanken was selected and sent to take charge of the small flocks 2 CONT at Milks Grove and Buckley. From Springfield, the ICRR brought the young 2 CONT minister to Gilman. In Gilman he did not receive much information nor any 2 CONT encouragement. He did hear favorable statements about Buckley. Rev. 2 CONT Blanken took the first train available for Buckley. Milks Grove and 2 CONT Gilman, that apparently was more or less indifferent, neither warm nor 2 CONT cold, are still without a flourishing true Lutheran Church, seven decates 2 CONT after rejection of that proffer. 2 CONT At Buckley, the Lutheran pastor was given a warm and hearty reception. 2 CONT Messers. H. and A. Krumwiede were at the station to greet him. The German 2 CONT people of Buckley hailed from Hanover, Germany, and imagine their 2 CONT pleasing surprise - so was Rev. Blanken a native son of that country. 2 CONT Landsleut! What joy! 2 CONT The Buckley Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1870, as 2 CONT heretofore stated. This organization is still in existance. The 2 CONT Presbyterian Church on the corner of Lincoln and West Third Street (was 2 CONT established) in 1872. For many years, this church flourished; due to the 2 CONT removal of many members, it was finally closed. Later, a denomination, 2 CONT the Christian Church took the property over. By death and removals, the 2 CONT membership dwindled and the church was torn down and a residence on the 2 CONT corner stands in place of it. Now another church, an Evangelical Lutheran 2 CONT Church of the Missouri Synod was soon to follow, and indeed was a 2 CONT necessity. 2 CONT It was in the spring of 1877 when Rev. George Blanken arrived. Mr. and 2 CONT Mrs. August Krumwiede hospitably shared their humble home with the young 2 CONT pastor, to the lasting blessing of both the pastor and his kind patrons. 2 CONT Mr. August Krumwiede and family then resided on Railroad Avenue, between 2 CONT Lincoln and Elm Streets, in the renovated residence. At the present, it 2 CONT is the residence of Mr. Henry Ilse and family. At this hospitable home, 2 CONT the young pastor found food, shelter and staunch friends. 2 CONT The necessity of having a house of worship for the local Lutherans was 2 CONT apparent and conceded. With the Krumwiede families were the families of 2 CONT Wm. Ahlden, Henry Wolf, Henry and Louis Valberding (?), later the Luhrsen 2 CONT family, Louis Lustfeldt, John Ferdina, Christ Ouesse, William Poppe, Fred 2 CONT Weber, Louis Niemann, the Wagners, Voehls and the Wendts. All these had 2 CONT chosen Buckley for a future residence. 2 CONT When it became known that the German element to this community 2 CONT contemplated the erection of a church building, Mr. John A. Koplin 2 CONT offered to donate the four lots on the north side of Main Street, between 2 CONT Oak and Park Streets, for that purpose. On that site, just east of the 2 CONT alley, the new church was built in simple but churchly architecture, 2 CONT churchly windows and doors and a spire. Money was scarce, but the love of 2 CONT the Lord opened willing hearts and the purses. The church was built and 2 CONT paid for promptly. This cannot be said of many congregations and their 2 CONT churches. A church to assemble with an energetic pastor as a leader, that 2 CONT injected new life into the members of the congregation and assured 2 CONT success. When the constitution was submitted for adoption, it was Mr. 2 CONT Frederick Luhrsen who promptly put his signature there, the others 2 CONT quickly following. 2 CONT Rev. Blanken loved music, and knew that music had charms, was an agency 2 CONT for culture and edification. Every week or more often, he gathered men, 2 CONT women and children to sing, to learn to sing correctly and harmoniously 2 CONT as The Lutheran Chorales. Out of this motley group of singers, a choir 2 CONT developed. On Sunday afternoons, the pastor taught Christenlihre in 2 CONT proper and wise manner. The fundamentals of Christian doctrines were 2 CONT studied. After the school work, the Sonntagschulharfen were opened and 2 CONT Vie die Altan Sungen So Zwitchartan Die Jungan. The young folks sang 2 CONT lustily, joyfully and sang well - remarkably well in four-part harmony. 2 CONT To Rev. Glanken, the souls of the little ones were as precious as those 2 CONT of their elders. 2 CONT He espoused the need of a building to conduct a Christian Day School. 2 CONT This project soon materialized. It was placed on the corner east of the 2 CONT church. A frame building about 18' x 26' in size. Rev. Blanken threw his 2 CONT soul into his ministerial work among young and old, andd by the Grace of 2 CONT the Lord with great and pleasing success, but after several years of 2 CONT constant use of his throat, in school, in church, in public and private 2 CONT addresses, his voice began to fail. Several Concordia College students 2 CONT were engaged to relive him. Later, Teacher Appel was called, and the 2 CONT school had a trained Proeceptor! After one year's work, Mr. Appel 2 CONT followed a call to the school at Bloomington, Illinois. Again, the school 2 CONT had no teacher. A plea was sent to Addison Teachers Seminar at Addison, 2 CONT Illinois, to send a teacher. That request was complied with. A young 2 CONT graduate came, stayed, and is here yet. He came in late August, 1885, and 2 CONT at this writing, the calendars and almanacs tell us that we are living in 2 CONT the year of Grace H.D. 1903. It was J.M. Gross who responded to the call 2 CONT of St. John's Church at Buckley, who came with an eager desire to do his 2 CONT best efforts in teaching his parocial school, using the approved Lutheran 2 CONT Catechism, Bible History, and the secular branches in common use. 2 CONT Again, it was Mr. August Krumwiede and his estimable family who gave 2 CONT this young stranger a sanctuary. The family hardly had room to share, yet 2 CONT the good people took him in and gave him their best room, the parlor, for 2 CONT a study and a bedroom. I was thankful then, and am today. They treated me 2 CONT well. Never will I forget that generous hospitality. In their home, I 2 CONT found with them a pleasant home for more than four years. This I here 2 CONT record in deep appreciation and gratefulness. 2 CONT The Krumwiede brothers conjjointly with the other early settlers of 2 CONT Lutheran faith, founding a true Christian church and its necessary 2 CONT adjunct and hand-maiden, a Christian Day School, did much, did it very 2 CONT well indeed, did more than they themselves could realize and forsee. What 2 CONT beautiful blessing issued from these institutuions no mortal can 2 CONT encompass. Only the Lord knows. Judgement Day will bring revelations. 2 CONT These good old folks have gone to their reward, are with the Saints in 2 CONT celestial realms. Their children and grandchildren along with others are 2 CONT carrying on the blessed work. Onward Christian Soldiers, and Upwards! 2 CONT Mr. August Krumwiede, born in Wendellorsten (again, see notes at the end 2 CONT of this transcription), in the district of Wolpe, Hanover, Germany, on 2 CONT September 12, 1840, departed this temporal life at peace with God and 2 CONT man, February 13, 1913. Alas! he did not get to see the fine new church 2 CONT built soon after, but he did see the erection of a new, modern two-story 2 CONT and basement brick school in 1906. [Said building was demolished in 1955 2 CONT and replaced with the structure still standing at the same location in 2 CONT 1996, as this is being typed. I was a member of the first 8th-grade 2 CONT class to attend classes in the new building, and was honored to share the 2 CONT speakers platform with State Senator Paul Simon at the building's 2 CONT dedication, at which time I spoke as representative for the student 2 CONT body.-LB] Mrs. August Krumwiede entered this world by birth November 24, 2 CONT 1840, four years, three months, and four days before this writer's 2 CONT mother, her advent in Saxonly Germany, Mrs. August Krumwiede nee 2 CONT Sternberg died a blessed death on December 16, 1922 - 19 years ago - 2 CONT surviving her husband by nine years. 2 CONT August Krumwiede came to this country about 1857, [again, this 2 CONT date is suspect and has not been verified-LB] joining relatives and friends 2 CONT at Summit, Illinois. If correctly informred, his bride-to-be Miss Louise 2 CONT Sophia Dorothea Sterenberg had already crossed the Atlantic and waited 2 CONT for the arrival of her loved one. On July 2, 1859, these two were joined 2 CONT in holy wedlock in Summit, Illinois. In that vicinity, they made their 2 CONT home for about twelve years. Then they again took to traveling and came 2 CONT to Buckley to live. That was in 1872 (less than a century after the 2 CONT Declaration of Independence by this country). Teir married life has been 2 CONT one of undisturbed happiness. Father, Mother and Children all dearly 2 CONT loved the homestead. 2 CONT By the grace of the Lord, they were permitted to observe with their 2 CONT children and grandchildren their Golden Wedding on July 2, 1909. Mr. and 2 CONT Mrs. Henry Krumwiede were privileged to witness the celebration of their 2 CONT Golden Wedding on ____________ and their Diamond Wedding on 2 CONT _____________. Mr. Henry Krumwiede was called to his heavenly home on 2 CONT _________________. Mrs. Krumwiede fell asleep in Jesus on 2 CONT _______________. St. John's church for ten or more years got along 2 CONT without an organ or other musical instrument to lead the congregational 2 CONT singing. This was possible due to the ability and good will of Mr. Henry 2 CONT Krumwiede the elder. Endowed with a stantorian and clear voice, if he 2 CONT succeeded in striking the correct pitch, it was easy for him to lead and 2 CONT sway the entire congregation. His family and his brother and his 2 CONT brother's family, all fond of singing and all born singers, joined in the 2 CONT chorus. 2 CONT Henry Krumwiede was the Cantor and the Lector of this church for 10 to 2 CONT 15 years, and did this work approvingly well. 2 CONT But using his vocal chords in the absence or in liew of a pipe organ 2 CONT caused havoc to the pastor. [I believe Herr Gross refers back to Pastor 2 CONT Blanken at this point.-LB] His throat rebelled and suffered. 2 CONT When in 1885, a teacher came, Henry Krumwiede in modest submission, 2 CONT automatically turned over the cantorship to that person. Throats all now 2 CONT equally strong. The Schulmeister found the singing, especially at 2 CONT Communion service when 20 to 30 or more stanzas had to be sung without 2 CONT any pauses or interludes, and abomination and an impossibility. The 2 CONT organ, be it ever so ordinary, just had to be installed to forestall the 2 CONT early collapse of both pastor and teacher. Those men had to talk, talk 2 CONT loudly, every day, all day, continuously, year after year. A Barchoff 2 CONT organ was placed in the year 1888. Mr. A. Krumwiede, the faithful 2 CONT janitor, did the pumping, operated the bellows to furnish the necessary 2 CONT Air Wind (Die Pusta). That organ injected new life, created and instilled 2 CONT a new spirit in congregational service. 2 CONT Rev. G. Blanken, an ardent devotee of good music, had organized a mixed 2 CONT choir in an early day. Naturally, the Krumwiedes were active and regular 2 CONT members - the component parts of that society. In 1885, this work of 2 CONT choir master was passed over to the teacher. He was a born Yankee, as 2 CONT some termed him; besides working on sacred music, he introduced secular 2 CONT music of proven worth. How this choir made the Wolkin ring! This choir is 2 CONT still in active service, though personnel and leadership changed. It is 2 CONT now under the able directorship of teacher Paul Winterstein. 2 CONT When Rev. Blanken voluntarily withdrew from active work with the mixed 2 CONT choir, he organized a Brass Band (einen Blas horn). Members of the 2 CONT Krumwiede family quite naturally joined as participating members. Fred G. 2 CONT Krumwiede played the baritone, and Frank (Ferdinand) Luhrsen compa, or 2 CONT tuba, for many years. 2 CONT This band furnished the music for the annual picnic and served at 2 CONT community, civic and patriotic festivals, here and elsewhere. After Rev. 2 CONT Blanken's death, in 1906, J.M. Gross was persuaded to serve, as B.P. 2 CONT Spiegler loved to call it, as Kapellmeister. A number of the members of 2 CONT the band removed to other locations, others found old age creeping in, 2 CONT and gradually the band disbanded. That was a distinct loss to the 2 CONT community. An attempt was made to supply the want by the formation of a 2 CONT juvenile band. This flourished, then struggled, and passed into history. 2 CONT A young peoples society was called into life to foster Christian 2 CONT fellowship, literature and music. Again, the younger members of the 2 CONT Krumwiede families responded. There were quartettes, trios, duets, solo 2 CONT singing, readings, declamations, dramatizations, plays, besides social 2 CONT games, summer and winter sports. 2 CONT At this point, it is chronologically correct to draw attention to 2 CONT another community development. It was the Wander-lust, a migratory 2 CONT spirit. The second generation was budding into young manhood and 2 CONT womanhood. The surge for self sustenance grew in intensity. Excursion 2 CONT trains at low fares for land seekers were advertised conspicuously and 2 CONT promiscously. That lured many of our people to Minnesota, to the Dakotas, 2 CONT Idaho, Washington, Montana, Oregon, Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Michigan, 2 CONT Nebraska, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, California, Texas, Mississippi, and 2 CONT Florida. Buckley people almost everywhere in Oklahoma, in Arizona, and in 2 CONT New Mexico. The result of that agitation was that many good people, 2 CONT whole families, changed locations. Among the many in quest of cheaper 2 CONT land were many of the Krumwiede family, to wit: Henry Krumwiede and 2 CONT family, Fred H. Krumwiede, Louis and George A. Krumwiede, William Hartke, 2 CONT A.P. Freitag, August Klann, Edward Sprengel, Charles Fricke, G. Zwirn, 2 CONT the Voehl brothers, the Wagners, and others, including the Wendt family. 2 CONT This caused anguish that almost an entire congregation of good Christians 2 CONT left dear old Buckley. Later, some returned, others remained. The 2 CONT Krumwiedes settled near Lakefield, Fairmont, and Sherburn. 2 CONT When Mr. and Mrs. August Krumwiede located in this community, they 2 CONT first settled on a farm a distance northwest of the Village. Just how 2 CONT long they remained there, the writer is unable to state, but can document 2 CONT the fact that in 1885, they had founded a home on the north side of Elm 2 CONT Street at the corner of Pine. In the vallage, the father took up the 2 CONT draying business. He and his son Fred were kept busy at that work 2 CONT throughout the year. There was always plenty of hauling and transfer work 2 CONT to do. Plowing vegetable garden land, cutting grass and weeds, hauling 2 CONT and storing natural ice, etc., were part of their work. 2 CONT For several terms, Mr. August Krumwiede was an honored and respected 2 CONT member of the Village Board of Trustees and often served on the Election 2 CONT Boards. August Krumwiede was a man of conservative type, meek and quiet, 2 CONT one of the silent in the land. His brother Henry spoke readily and 2 CONT forcibly, with slight or no provocation; he was ever ready to enter 2 CONT argumentation (with the) challenge of strident reality. He was progressive, 2 CONT aggressive, and favored action. There were four brothers, to wit: 2 CONT Fredrick, the eldest, followed by Henry, William and August. Fredrick 2 CONT settled in Minnesota and embraced the Catholic faith. Clara and Lydia 2 CONT Krumwiede, daughters of Henry William Krumwiede and wife nee Fricke, lost 2 CONT their mother in early childhood. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Krumwiede, the 2 CONT grandparents, took these children in and reared and educated them as well 2 CONT as their own all through life. 2 CONT Even in the [18]eighties, everybody came to town, when obliged to, in 2 CONT lumber wagons. Spring seats were a rarity; whoever owned such a luxury 2 CONT was looked up to. A buggy? A carriage? If anyone permitted himself to be 2 CONT so extreme and extravagant, we failed to detect that Croesus. But note! 2 CONT Henry Krumwiede (and this is in character with the man) owned and used a 2 CONT spring wagon - possibly the only one in the county. It was painted green 2 CONT - the color of all better-class vehicles. And note again! Not only were 2 CONT there springs in the gearing. Nay! Mr. Krumwiede had two or three spring 2 CONT seats, too! How that family could ride in comparative comfort to and from 2 CONT church, and with that well-matched team of frisky bays! All that was 2 CONT something par excellance. When a bridal couple wanted to be carried to 2 CONT the church in a dignified manner, in a finer mode of carriage than a 2 CONT lumber wagon, then that green spring wagon was prayed for. 2 CONT No one had a hearse. When a corpse was to be taken to its last resting 2 CONT place, the casket was placed on straw in the bed of that well-favored 2 CONT spring wagon. Forced to toil all week, many people did their weekly 2 CONT shopping on Sunday morning. They walked to town, to church with a heavy 2 CONT basket of eggs on their arm. The horses (only one team being owned by 2 CONT most families) were given a day of rest to be the more able to do a big 2 CONT week's work. The eggs were exchanged for groceries or for cash. This cash 2 CONT was needed to meet their church dues. 2 CONT Vorsteher, deacon Henry Krumwiede, was always ready to accept and book 2 CONT these church contributions. If any became laggard, indifferent about 2 CONT paying these dues (their mite), Mr. Krumwiede did not hesitate to 2 CONT admonish or pronounce judgement upon recalcitrants. 2 CONT This brief sketch of early life in the Buckley community dwells 2 CONT principally on family histories of Messrs. Henry and August Krumwiede. It 2 CONT is manifest that a special blessing rested and still rests upon this 2 CONT family - blessings material and blessings spiritual. Two couples (began) 2 CONT eighty-five years ago, and now...! 2 CONT The Krumwiede family has so grown and multiplied in population and 2 CONT otherwise that it is prominent and outstanding. Members of this family 2 CONT are found in all parts of Artesia Township, in Ash Grove, in Pigeon 2 CONT Grove, in Crescent (City), Douglas, Loda, and Belmont Townships; in fact 2 CONT all over Iroquois County. There are Krumwiedes of the Buckley House in 2 CONT Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, North 2 CONT Dakota, and Arizona. 2 CONT We find them in Chicago, Detroit, Kankakee, Joliet, Chebanse, Ashkum, 2 CONT Clifton, Matteson, Riverdale, Dolton, and where not. 2 CONT Did not the Lord say to them, too: Ich will dich zu einam grosen Volk 2 CONT machen oder: Wachsa in viel tausand mal tausand! 2 CONT Patriotic, loyal, dependable, honest and industrious, they are an 2 CONT esteemed and appreciated addition to any community. Several are, others 2 CONT were, leading business men in Buckley, Bloomington, Detroit, Paxton, and 2 CONT DelRey. The family is now in the fourth and fifth generation. What will 2 CONT be the standing, the reward, of this remarkable family at the close of 2 CONT this century? How many souls are in this family now? A surprising number. 2 CONT Messrs. Ernest, Edward, and Emil Krumwiede, all of robust physique, 2 CONT were called to heir home above in the prime of life unexpectedly, 2 CONT reminding us that in the midst of life we are surrounded by death. In 2 CONT their deaths, to us untimely, the Lord over life and death spoke 2 CONT admonishingly to all. 2 CONT In conclusion this supplication: may all children, no matter of what 2 CONT generation, remain steadfast in the faith of their Fathers and Mothers. 2 CONT Before we close our summary of this history, may the children of the two 2 CONT central figures, the Henry Krumwiede and the August Krumwiede families, 2 CONT pass in revue. 2 CONT 2 CONT I. Henry Krumwiede 2 CONT 1. Mary - queenly, friendly, mature 2 CONT 2. Henry William - impulsive, quick of action, rash 2 CONT 3. August H. - quiet, somber, stolid 2 CONT 4. Fred H. - extremely modest, pleasingly friendly 2 CONT 5. Emma - conservative, amiable, pensive 2 CONT 6. Louis - akin to Henry, impetuous, fond of singing 2 CONT 7. Bertha - demure, coy, maidenly, reserved 2 CONT 8. William - aggressive, punctilious, tidy 2 CONT 9. George A. - akin to Fred H., content, friendly to all 2 CONT 2 CONT II. August Krumwiede 2 CONT 1. Sophia - quiet, very modest disposition 2 CONT 2. Henry C. - "Brakesman" to his friends, active, circumspect 2 CONT 3. August F. - one of the quiet in the land, trustworthy, reliable 2 CONT 4. Fred G. - a hard worker, ever reliant, big of heart, sympathetic 2 CONT 5. Emma - matronly, charitable, helpful, devout 2 CONT 6. Louise - aggressive, looking forward & upward, optimistic 2 CONT 7. George H. - Staid, accomodating, home-loving. The inheritor and 2 CONT custodian of the family Shrine. Keeper of the parental Homestead set to 2 CONT keep the home fires burning for family members and guests. 2 CONT 2 CONT Great credit is due to good, active, ever busy, ever adaptable, ever 2 CONT contented Wilhelmina, daughter of H.C. Krumwiede and his wife nee Shoh 2 CONT (Schoh). Wilhelmina met all trials, every adverse and perverse problem in 2 CONT verigable Spartan spirit. Her mother called from hence when she, 2 CONT Wilhelmina, was just entering her teens, she mothered and successfully 2 CONT reared her younger and elder brothers and sisters. Bravo! Mrs. Wilhelmina 2 CONT Krumwiede Tholen! God bless her! We know Wilhelmina is still keeping a 2 CONT motherly interest and a watchful eye on all of her brothers and sisters. 2 CONT She deserves a gold medal for her unfaltering devotion. Most of the 2 CONT Krumwiedes followed or are following agriculture as a livelihood. 2 CONT However, there are in the family carpenters, painters, paperhangers, 2 CONT printers, dealers in dry and wet goods, in hardware, produce, men in 2 CONT political offices, in the educational field, commercial, aircraft, 2 CONT constabulary, operators of grain elevators, and last but not least, there 2 CONT are several Lutheran Pastors, including Rev. Carl Hilgendorf and Rev. 2 CONT Theodore Hilgendorf. 2 CONT The children of the senior Krumwiedes are young no more. All are 2 CONT already not only fathers and mothers, but grandfathers and grandmothers - 2 CONT even great grandfathers and great grandmothers. Three generations in one. 2 CONT In view of this fact, the history of these 16 families should be sketched 2 CONT and recorded in this book now without delay. This second generation 2 CONT deserves this recognition. The third and fourth generations expect that 2 CONT of you. And, please note: the third generation fathers and mothers are 2 CONT already in middle age. NOW is the opportune time to write that up. 2 CONT Obviously, the writer of these lines cannot do all that himself, a 2 CONT septuagenarian. He therefore begs to suggest that the Rev. Carl and Theo. 2 CONT Hilgendorf be vested with authority to write the historicles and 2 CONT biographicals of the second generation. Rev. Carl Hilgendorf, that of the 2 CONT August Krumwiede children that includes the entire Hilgendorf family! The 2 CONT Rev. Theo. Hilgendorf, those of the Henry Krumwiede (generations). Those 2 CONT Pastors are capable, and I think quite ready, to meet your wishes. They 2 CONT should use paper same size and quality as this, and insert their work in 2 CONT this binder. Every writer has his own peculiar diction. Callin in various 2 CONT writers will make these chapters more colorful, fascinating, and 2 CONT interesting. 2 CONT [Unfortunately, this appears to have never been done, the Hilgendorf 2 CONT brothers citing the pressing needs of their ministries as not allowing 2 CONT time, and no one else has ever tried to begin a narrative. Now, in 1996, 2 CONT that 2nd generation are mostly deceased, along with some of the third.-LB] 2 CONT Future generations pursuing, while pondering these notes, it may be of 2 CONT interest to record the present status of this community, of this 2 CONT municipality. During the past 55 to 65 years, the Village has not grown 2 CONT in area nor in population. These remain stable. [When this editor left 2 CONT Buckley in 1956, the population was 550. At one point in the last 40 2 CONT years, the population reached 750. Population is again in 1996 shown on 2 CONT the city limits sign to be 550. -LB] Several parcels of land by request 2 CONT of the tax-paying owners were legally disconnected from the body politic. 2 CONT Buckley has now less industrial and commercial activities than in 1885. 2 CONT Then there was a tile factory, cheese factory, hemp mill, sorgum mill, 2 CONT and a small factory for making door hinges of a special pattern. 2 CONT In former years, many were interested in raising fancy poultry. Poultry 2 CONT shows were held every winter. 2 CONT What caused the retrogression, the change? The motor car. Farmers 2 CONT began to till their soil by power; tractors and trucks were introduced. 2 CONT The motor created demands for impoved highways, traffic lanes. Everybody 2 CONT invested in a motorized vehicle. With cars and good roads [There are 2 CONT several "Lincoln Miles," or "slabs," in Iroquois County, still in 2 CONT reasonable repair. -LB] business drifted to larger commercial centers. 2 CONT That put a quietness on the rural burgs. Today, horses are a rarity, 2 CONT supplanted by automobiles, trucks, and tractors. Municipal and rural 2 CONT electrification also wrought great changes. That brought the installation 2 CONT of electric light, electric power, electric refrigeration. 2 CONT The village, though it did not expand, developed wonderfully in modern 2 CONT improvements. The streets are all of the improved order, either paved or 2 CONT macadomized. [Several are still of brick in 1996. -LB] The citizens enjoy 2 CONT electric service, have water, sewage and drainage as any urban home in 2 CONT cities of greater population. Nearly all homes have modern comforts and 2 CONT all are well kept. The board walks have disappeared. They were replaced 2 CONT by concrete walks. Farm homes have all been modernized. [Not true! Herr 2 CONT Gross published this document in 1942 - the year of my birth. On the 2 CONT farms, we did not have electricity until approximately 1947. I never 2 CONT lived in a house with hot running water and an indoor commode other 2 CONT than chamber pots until I left Buckley and farm life in 1956. In our 2 CONT second home, known then as "the Morgan place," we had the luxury of cold 2 CONT piped water, but water still had to be heated for baths on the stove in a 2 CONT copper boiler. -LB] 2 CONT The ICRR, a heavy steel double track line, gives us suburban service to 2 CONT Chicago, Kankakee, and Champaign. 2 CONT The present Township officials are: FW Lietz (supervisor), Edward 2 CONT Himmel (Town Clerk), Fred Stroup (Highway Commissioner), DD Reed 2 CONT (Assessor, deceased), Frank Ilse (Justice of the Peace, deceased), and 2 CONT William Mell (Constable). Following are the officials of the Village: 2 CONT William Kaufman, Otto Swartz, CH Klann, William H. Janssen, Village 2 CONT Trustees, and HH Reynolds Street Commissioner, and Marshal Alfred H. 2 CONT Krumwiede. 2 CONT The six or more filling stations and garages emphasize the prominance 2 CONT of the motor regime. 2 CONT Voting church members of St. John's in 1885, numbered about 75. In 2 CONT 1942, the number is 175 or more. 2 CONT In 1885, about 90 pupils of all ages in all grades were enrolled and 2 CONT packed in the school room. That number later grew after the corn husking 2 CONT season, but again dropped when spring plowing began. 2 CONT God's presence and blessings were apparent. 2 CONT 2 CONT Allein Gott in der Ho'h sei Ehre! 2 CONT An Gottes segan ist alles gelegen. 2 CONT 2 CONT -End Herr Gross' Account- 2 CONT 2 CONT I have attempted - not necessarily with accuracy - to make a readable 2 CONT paragraph or two out of some haphazard notes following Herr Gross' 2 CONT account in the book. -LB 2 CONT 2 CONT Further notes by Theodore Henry Krumwiede 2 CONT 2 CONT STORIES MY DAD [Henry William] TOLD ME 2 CONT 2 CONT As told to Henry William by HIS father (Henry Konrad) 2 CONT 2 CONT "Grandmother and Grandfather [Unfortunately, no one has ever recorded the 2 CONT first names of these people. -LB], August and I emigrated from Saxony 2 CONT Germany at ages 16 and 17, to Buckley Illinois, to escape from Prussianism 2 CONT (mandatory Military Service). 2 CONT "They had four sons, and divided their farm amongst their sons, Henry, 2 CONT Frederick, William and August. 2 CONT "Henry K. and August came to Buckley, Illinois." 0 @I210@ INDI 1 NAME Fredrick H /KRUMWIEDE/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1862 1 DEAT 2 DATE
