Herman 2 CONT Duncan Mackenzie, son of Alexaner Mackenzie and Ann McBean, was 2 CONT born the 12th of August 1787, at Ruthven, Parish of Moy, Strathdearn, 2 CONT the land of the Macintoshes, Invernesshire, Scotland. In 1804 he 2 CONT joined the Cullodon Battalion of Volunteers, and on the 2nd of April, 2 CONT he joined the 5th Battalion, Royal Artillery at Woolwich. On the 16th 2 CONT July 1809, under the Command of the Earl of Chatham, he went on an 2 CONT Expedition where he received prize money for the taking of Flushing. 2 CONT Returned later to England and in November 1813 under the Command of 2 CONT Lieut. General Sir Thomas Graham and Staff, accompanied the Prince of 2 CONT Orange to Holland. He was there appointed Acting Quarter Master for 2 CONT the Ordinance Department the Staff. In February 1814 begun the Siege 2 CONT of Antwerp and in April 1815 on the 15th day he was order to proceed 2 CONT to a village called Hall beyond Brussels, their to form a Grand Depot 2 CONT with a Detachment of Artillery commanded by Lieut. Edward Trevor, 2 CONT Royal Artillery and three hundred Hanoverians. As Quartermaster of 2 CONT this Grand Depot he was ordered by the Duke of Wellington, north of 2 CONT Brussels, to supply the Army with Stoves and Ammunition for the Battle 2 CONT of Waterloo. On the overthrow of Napoleon and the French Army, Duncan 2 CONT Mackenzie returned, in due course, to England and took his Discharge 2 CONT from the Royal Artillery on the 30th of June 1816, and in the same 2 CONT year married his wife, Margaret Barclay also from Invernesshire in 2 CONT August 1816. 2 CONT On the 1st day of April 1817, Duncan Mackenzie with his wife left 2 CONT Inverness for Glasgow, on route to America, grants of land in Canada 2 CONT this time being given of most favourable terms to British Veterans. 2 CONT It is not easy, at the present day to understand the difficulties the 2 CONT early settlers had to encounter particularly setters form the old 2 CONT county, ignorant as they were of the conditions of life in Canada. 2 CONT The long voyage in a sailing vessel across the ocean was the slightest 2 CONT of their troubles. Shortly after their arrival in Canada, their 2 CONT eldest child Anne was born June the 11th 1817. at Miramachi, Nova 2 CONT Scotia. Later they began there journey West. When they came to the 2 CONT St. Lawrence rapids they had fifty miles of jolting over a wagon road. 2 CONT At Cornwall they remained for some time, learning farming conditions. 2 CONT At Prescott they were able to take boat for Kingston, seventy miles 2 CONT further up. Toronto, or as it was then called, York, was a hundred 2 CONT and seventy miles further. From York they crossed to the mouth of the 2 CONT Niagara River, where they again took wagon for Queenston, seven miles 2 CONT distant; and from that town, still by wagon, to Fort Erie, a distance 2 CONT of twenty-nine miles. At Fort Erie, they took boat for Long Point, 2 CONT eighty miles away, paying L16-6s for the trip. Another boat brought 2 CONT them to Kettle Creek, a distance of sixty miles, for which they paid 2 CONT L3-5s. Their objective point was the home of His Honor, Colonel 2 CONT Talbot, and this they reached on the 21st of October 1818. Col. 2 CONT Talbot had of the distribution of the Government Land for this 2 CONT District and Duncan Mackenzie received orders for two hundred acres at 2 CONT Lot 23, Township of London. He, later on, took up six hundred more 2 CONT acres which were turned over to other settlers coming in. Mr. and 2 CONT Mrs. Mackenzie wre just twenty-seven days making the journey from 2 CONT Cornwall to Colonel Talbot's home -days that no doubt impressed them 2 CONT strongly with the extent of their adopted country. 2 CONT The absence of roads was, of course, one of the main difficulites 2 CONT with which the early settlers had to contend, narrow, winding trails 2 CONT having been blazed among the trees, obstructed here and there with 2 CONT fallen logs around which it was easier to go than to remove. There 2 CONT were no bridges and when streams had to be crossed the road was blazed 2 CONT to a shallow part where they could be forded. Bears and wolves were 2 CONT not an uncomon sight but it was never understood that any damage was 2 CONT done by them. Indians occasionally came into the neighbourhood, some 2 CONT arriving at a time when Mr. MacKenzie was away, Mrs. Mackenzie took a 2 CONT gun off the wall of the cabin and the Indians departed taking a young 2 CONT pig with them. 2 CONT The first orchard in the locality was planted by Mr. Mackenzie 2 CONT with seeds which the brought from the Old County. For stoves they 2 CONT used cranes and pot-hooks which, with a paid of tons, decorated every 2 CONT chimney. They made their own soap and candles and raised their sheep 2 CONT and made their yarns. Now and again bears took a sheep. However, they 2 CONT succeeded making mittens, stockings and comforters. Probably the first 2 CONT surgical operation was performed by Mrs. MacKenzie when her eldest 2 CONT son, George, had of his large toes chopped off with an axe. She put a 2 CONT piece of shingle under the foot and fastened the toe in its place, the 2 CONT operation being as successful as if performed by a College of 2 CONT Surgeons. 2 CONT Mr. Mackenzie paid a Mr. Drew $31.00 for building his first log 2 CONT cabin, situated close beside what is now Provincial Highway No. 2. 2 CONT They moved into this cabin on 17th November 1818 and on December 19th 2 CONT 1818 their second child, Mary was born. Mary was the frst white child 2 CONT born in London Township north of the river Thames, Mrs MacKenzie was 2 CONT attended by a Mrs Kilbourne from Byron. 2 CONT The children and grand-children of Mr. and Mrs. Mackenzie well 2 CONT remember their delight in going with their grand-mother to the bush 2 CONT to gather herbs for medicinal uses,-- Hyssop, Hoarhoud, Sweet Cicely, 2 CONT Squaw-berries, Ground Nuts, Spice Wood and Crinkley Root. These wood 2 CONT be tied in bunches and hung up to dry in the ample kitchen which was 2 CONT also adorned by Golden Corn braided by the husks and Onions by their 2 CONT tops. 2 CONT The older children began thier education at home but were still 2 CONT quite young when a teacher was secured for the District and they 2 CONT plodded to school through the woods six days a week. Later, Saturday 2 CONT afternoon was as a holiday and the whole Saturday holiday was 2 CONT introduced about the time of Lennie's Grammar when the children stood 2 CONT in line in front of the teacher in order of merit, swinging 2 CONT rythmetically from side to side and memorizing lists, adverbs, 2 CONT adjectives, etc. 2 CONT When a cow was killed the skin was taken to a tanner at Bryon 2 CONT and half of it left in payment for sole leather and a journey-man 2 CONT cobbler stayed at the house and made the shoes. Incidentally he 2 CONT supplied gum for the children as they usually stole his wax. Mr. 2 CONT MacKenzie brought his own Shoemakers Box and Last to this County and 2 CONT did his own cobbling through the very early years - his Box and Last 2 CONT and leather apron being still in possession of the family. 2 CONT The first Mill was near the Byron Waterworks and corn and other 2 CONT grain taken their to be ground. On one occasion when Mr. Mackenzie was 2 CONT returning home with his ground corn a storm came up and the night grew 2 CONT dark early. He took off his coat to keep the corn dry with it and 2 CONT held his horse for fear of losing his way and at daybreak found 2 CONT himself not a quarter of a mile from his home. 2 CONT Mr. And Mrs. Mackenzie had twelve children - five of whom died in 2 CONT infancy. 2 CONT Of the remaining seven, all now deceased -- 2 CONT Anne, married Lt. Joshua Applegarth was chosen as clerk. The meeting was 2 CONT held at Mr. Applegarth's home. At his time it was voted "that the 2 CONT clerk is be authorized to furnish a blank book for records and that 2 CONT the collector is to collect a York sixpence from each assembled 2 CONT inhabitant to defray the expenses thereof. This pioneer record is 2 CONT signed by Duncan Mackenzie, who appears to have taken Applegarth's at 2 CONT once. On the 13 June 1829 was made a Justice of 2 CONT the Peace and on June 16th 1839 was appointed by Sir George Arthur, 2 CONT Lieutenant Governor of the Province, to be Inspector of Flour in the 2 CONT District of London. 2 CONT In Military affairs, Duncan Mackenzie took an active part, as in 2 CONT civic. In 1837 he was appointed to a Captain in the 4th Middlesex 2 CONT Militia. In 1837- 1838, during the War in that time he commanded a 2 CONT Battery at Chippewa. He was then ordered to London where, in 1841 he 2 CONT raised the London Independent Volunteer Artillery, which he kept up at 2 CONT his own expense for fifteen years. The present London Field Battery 2 CONT may be said to be the successor to Captain Mackenzie's Battery of 2 CONT 1841. Captain Mackenzie received his Captain's commission to command 2 CONT the London Volunter Company of Artllery on the 23rd October 1841, from 2 CONT Lieut. General Sir Richard Downes Jackson and his Captain's Commission 2 CONT to command the London Independent Company, on the 10th January 1849, 2 CONT from the Earl of Elgin and Kincardine, and in the Canada Gazette of 2 CONT the 8th May 1856, Upper Canada. Late London Independent Artillery 2 CONT Company, is permitted to retire with the rank of Major. John B. Askin, 2 CONT Col. Commanding 8th Military District. 2 CONT In religion Mr. Mackenzie was an ardent Presbyterian being "Auld 2 CONT Kirk" and was the Chairman of the Committee that was entrusted with 2 CONT the erection of the First Church of Scotland in the district. In 1842 2 CONT he laid the Corner Stone of the first St. Andrew's Church, which cost 2 CONT $500. 2 CONT A Cordoruy Road was run north from Hyde Park - the worst piece of 2 CONT road. 2 CONT Where Hyde Park Village now stands was swampy. Mrs. MacMillian 2 CONT and Mr. MacDonald remember going about on a Raft and in Winter the 2 CONT spot was used for skating. The north-west corner was owned by the 2 CONT Routledges; the north-east by squire Mackenzie; south-east by the 2 CONT Hulls and the south-west by John Barclay. The north-east corner was 2 CONT swampy with willow and Blue Beach trees and Mr. MacDonald remembers 2 CONT being sent by a school teacher to get switches from them to use to use 2 CONT on the children. 2 CONT The first Hotel Keeper on the north-west corner was a Mr. Forsythe 2 CONT and he was followed by Mr. Richardson, Mr. McDougall and the Kennedys. 2 CONT On the south-east corner a Hotel was built for Mr Charlie Woods, 2 CONT father of Mrs. Dan Ashwell. 2 CONT The property east from south corner was owned by Donald Barclay 2 CONT and further east by Mr. William MacMillan.
