"They cames to Emmaus" 1 CONT Sebastian Knauss was born on the village of Tittelsheim in Wetteravia ( 1 CONT Obberhessen ) on October 6, 1714. He was reared in the Reformed faith. After 1 CONT serving his apprenticeship as cartwright in the home of the widely known 1 CONT Reformed Elder Henry Antes, he settled in Maguntsche, presumably on the same 1 CONT land he occupied and farmed later. This tract of 200 acres, adjoining that of 1 CONT Jacob Ehrenhardt, had been surveyed November 4, 1737 to one George Hoffman, but 1 CONT was later vacated. Sebastian Knauss accepted the survey and was given a 1 CONT warrant dated September 10, 1747. Some of this land is today a part of the 1 CONT Borough of Emmaus; some of it, at East Main Street and Knauss Lane, with peach 1 CONT orchard and pine grove, is today owned by Dewey Marks, Esq. The old house on 1 CONT it, built by Henry Knauss, son of Sebastian, in 1777, we believe to stand on or 1 CONT near the site of the early log house of Sebastian Knauss. 1 CONT Some time in the late summer or early fall of 1742 both Jacob Ehrenhardt and 1 CONT Sebastian Knauss with their wifes visited Bethlehem and were deeply impressed 1 CONT with the work of the Moravian Brethren there. 1 CONT On May 5, 1751 he received a warant for 33 acres and 88 perches; November 20, 1 CONT 1751 75 acres. In 1752 he and Jacob Ehrenhardt each contributed an additional 1 CONT 25 acres of land to the church. He died at 4:30 P.M. His grave marker is #62 1 CONT row 3. 1 NOTE ! "Knauss Genealogy" by Wilbur Lewis King, 1930, pp. 17-8. 1 CONT He came to America with his parents in 1723. He settled near Emmaus, Pa., 1 CONT prior to 1740 and followed the occupation of farmer and wheelwright. His cause 1 CONT of death was from a cold which developed into inflamation of the chest 1 CONT (pneumonia). He was reared a member of the Reformed Church but while learning 1 CONT the trade of a waggoner with Henry Antes at Emmaus he became interested in the 1 CONT Moravian congregation at Bethlehem and later they became the nucleus of the 1 CONT Moravian congregation at Emmaus. From the records on file in the Department of 1 CONT Internal Affairs at Harrisburg, Pa., it appears that Sebastian Knauss purchased 1 CONT from the Proprietors of the province of Pennsylvania at least 3 tracts of land 1 CONT as follows: 200 acres 12 September 1747; 55 acres 11 January 1760; and 75 acres 1 CONT 10 October 1761, making a total of 330 acres lying in the townships of Upper 1 CONT Milford and Salisbury. In addition to these tracts he purchased on 20 March 1 CONT 1765 from Martin Ginchinger 71 1/2 acres in Upper Milford Township ( Office of 1 CONT Recorder of Deeds, Northampton Co., Pa., Vol B1, page 35.),making his total 401 1 CONT 1/2 acres. In 1747, he and Jacob Ehrenhard were elected and ordained stewards 1 CONT of the newly orgainized Moravian Church at Emmaus and jointly donated 102 1 CONT acres of land for the erection of a hamlet including the church and school and 1 CONT grounds adjacent. He is therefore known as the founder of Emmaus. The village 1 CONT was surveyed in 1759 and named Emmaus in 1761. He was naturalized 10 April 1 CONT 1753. He was of small stature, had auburn hair and was a good conversationalist 1 CONT and good natured. 1 NOTE ! "Bye Gone Days" sponsored by the Lock Ridge Historical Society of Alburtis, 1 CONT Pa., published 19 September 1987, Chapter 7, by Ron Shegda, p. 34. 1 CONT It was midday on 2 April 1761, when Bishop Joseph Spangenberg addressed a 1 CONT Lehigh Valley congregational village. For over 2 years the community had no 1 CONT name. After his sermon and a lovefeast service, this Moravian brother announced 1 CONT the new name of the village: Emmaus. 1 CONT This name was taken in rememberance of the Biblical town. The historic event 1 CONT that took place on the road to the original Emmaus appears in St. Luke's Gospel 1 CONT (Luke 24: 13-35). A series of mysterious events suddenly gave 2 travelers a new 1 CONT understanding about the thing they believed. They were so excited about their 1 CONT new experiences that " their hearts burned inside." So the road to Emmaus 1 CONT actually became a road to regeneration; personal and spiritual regeneration. 1 NOTE ! "History of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania" 1 CONT He became deeply impressed with the teachings of Count Zinzendorf. Later he 1 CONT left the Reformed Church and joined what was then known as the Society of 1 CONT Brethren. With others he walked to Bethlehem over the Indian path and there 1 CONT assisted in the organization of a separate church. He became steward and served 1 CONT in that capacity until his death in 1777. Thirteen children were born to him 1 CONT and his wife, 5 of whom were daughters, and of them it is recorded that " they 1 CONT were of small stature, beautiful of form and exceedingly entertaining." The 1 CONT descendants of these children are so numerous that it is impossible to follow 1 CONT them. It is sufficient to say that in every township and borough in the county 1 CONT the name is found, and in most cases the line of descent can be traced to this 1 CONT branch. 1 NOTE ! Northampton County Will Book # 1, Estate # 985, page 289. 1 CONT The translation of Sebastian Knous states all 13 childrens names and wife as 1 CONT Anna Catharina. Seven years after his death is when the estate was to be sold 1 CONT and divided up in equal shares between his wife and all his children or their 1 CONT descendants. Also listed is the husbands names of several of his daughters. The 1 CONT witnesses were Michael Knous, Martin Leibert and Frederick Wuensh. 1 NOTE ! Will of Sebastian Knous of Salisbury Twp. 1 CONT At the time of the writing of his will, 24 Feb. 1777, he was sickly, but of 1 CONT sound mind. His son John, who was already living on the 200 acre plantation, 1 CONT was allowed to live there, but had to pay rent to his mother so she could 1 CONT support the rest of the children living at home, for seven years. Likewise his 1 CONT son Jacob, living on the land he bought from Ehrnhard on the hill, had to pay 1 CONT rent to his mother for seven years, until the estate was sold and divided up 1 CONT among all the children. Each of these sons were given the first opportunity to 1 CONT purchase the property were they lived for the appraised value. His wife was 1 CONT allowed to keep anything she wanted from his personal estate for her natural 1 CONT life, and was to be furnished with 2 rooms and a kitchen. The Executors were to 1 CONT be his wife Anna Catharina, son Henry Knous and good friend Andrew Gering. The 1 CONT original will was written in German and translated to English by Lewis Klotz. 1 CONT The will was presented and read, 29 January 1782, before John Arndt (I believe 1 CONT he was the Judge for Northampton Co.) and witnessed by Henry Knaus and Andrew 1 CONT Gering. An apraisal took place 12 March 1777, totaling 939 pounds, this did not 1 CONT include land. Bornman 1 CONT I was born on 19 August 1729, in Boll, Wuerrtemberg, of Lutheran parents, 1 CONT and learned the shiemaker's trade. By nature I was very attentive. I had a 1 CONT peculiar fondness for the beautiful Christmas and Passion hymns. In my 14th 1 CONT year I was confirmed and partook of the Lord's Supper, at which time I 1 CONT experienced a strange feeling. I promised the dear Lord, that I wished to 1 CONT remain verlasting faithful to Him, but ere long I lost this feeling in my 1 CONT heart. I continued restless, and the depravity of my youthful nature aroused me 1 CONT very much. I intended to postpone my conversion until I became older; but my 1 CONT restlessness increased, and I was fully convinced that if I should not 1 CONT become converted, I should of necessity be lost forever; and thus I continued to 1 CONT my 17th year. It was in 1747 that the first sermon awakened me; for as the 1 CONT preachr described the condition of the matural man, I was surprised that he 1 CONT knew fully the condition of my heart, and I was persuaded, that as I then felt, 1 CONT I should be lost forever. But he described the love of Jesus so appealingly, 1 CONT that I immediately found consolation in and love for the Savior, and I bore 1 CONT testimony to others of what I had experienced in my heart. Through the grace 1 CONT and the peace I felt in my heart I took comfort in all things, since there was 1 CONT now no condemnation in me, for I believed that the Savio had forgiven my sins. 1 CONT But since I again felt my wretchedness, I again became confounded, and thought 1 CONT that what I had believed was mere imagination. I resolved to leave the place 1 CONT and postpone the matter until I should become older. I found employment with 1 CONT my brother and concealed the truth that I recognized. In the meanwhile I read 1 CONT the Bible zealously. The words of the Savior, " My sheep hear my voice," 1 CONT convinced me, that since I did not follow Him, I had no peace in my heart. In 1 CONT the meanwhile the so-called Soldier-Brethren found quarters in our place. I 1 CONT soon became acquainted with them and learned to love them. I revealed the 1 CONT conditions of my heart to them, and they directed me to the Savior, telling me 1 CONT that no one was too wicked to come to Him. This gave me new courage, yet I did 1 CONT not wish to appear as I actually was. At the same time, in company with the 1 CONT Soldier-Brethren I attended the meetings of Dr. Reis at Sulz faithfully. My 1 CONT acquaintance with them continued up to the time of their departure in the year 1 CONT 1748, when 12 of them went to the congregation at Herrnhaag. Their first 1 CONT letter from that place occasioned extraordinary reflection on my part, and I 1 CONT had a desire to be with them also. I experienced a great blessing in my heart 1 CONT when I visited them in the year 1749 and I was convinced that this was a people 1 CONT of God. I took home with me, therefore, a good impression of the congregation 1 CONT and determined to return in 2 years. 1 CONT When at length I desired to carry out my intention, I heard to my sorrow 1 CONT that the congregation at Herrnhag had dispersed and my dear Soldier-Brethren 1 CONT had crossed the sea to Pennsylvania. Therefore I considered day and night also 1 CONT to go thither. Together with several other friends, who were of the same mind, 1 CONT I set out on my journey thither in the year 1751, and had the good fortune to 1 CONT cross the sea in the ship `Irene' and profited much by the agreeable fellowship 1 CONT of those whose destination was Bethlehem. I went along to Bethlehem and 1 CONT remained there 3 weeks, but since I owd my passage, I was advised to go to the 1 CONT late Brother Jacob Ehrenhardt, where I worked for 16 months in order to 1 CONT discharge my obligation. When my term of service was over, I considered, 1 CONT whither I might now go, and reflected upon the career of my life thus far. 1 CONT Since I believed that I belonged to the congregation, I told the Brethren, and 1 CONT continued to go to Bethlehem. I soon received permission to live there, moved 1 CONT into the Brethren's house and remained there 5 months. Because of the baseness 1 CONT of my heart and because I shrank from declaring my true condition I was placed 1 CONT in a separate class of instruction. In spite of the fine testimonies at the 1 CONT chapel which delighted me very much and at times encourged me, I could not 1 CONT believe that I should prosper here. If I should be recieved and be admitted to 1 CONT the Lord's Supper and again go away, then I should wish never to have been 1 CONT born. Thus I found myself in great distress and at length revealed my 1 CONT condition in tears to the chior-leader; for I thought if I should leave in my 1 CONT present condition, I should be forsaken by God and by man. 1 CONT From the Minutes of the Congregational Council: 1 CONT January 31, 1759 - Andreas Giering has purchased 50 acres of timber from 1 CONT which to procure wood for building his house in the new village. 1 CONT April 25, 1759 - Br. Giering begins construction of his house, the first 1 CONT in the village. The brothers and sisters are to evoke blessings before the 1 CONT Savior, so that begining, middle and end shall be according to His wish. 1 CONT June 6, 1759 - Today they began to lay the foundation walls of Br. 1 CONT Giering's house. 1 CONT June 23, 1759 - Today Br. Giering's house was raised, the first in our 1 CONT little village. 1 CONT August 19, 1759 - Br. Giering on his birthday today gave the congregation 1 CONT and some of his friends a lovefeast. 1 CONT October 16, 1759 - Brother and Sister Giering moved into their newly 1 CONT built house today and are the first in our village. 1 NOTE ! "History of Allentown, Pa." 1 CONT In August 1776, six armed men arrested Andreas Giering, a leader of the 1 CONT Emmaus community, and took him to Allentown where he was charged with various 1 CONT infractions. The committee also called him a Tory and made disparaging remarks 1 CONT against the Moravians. They released him after fining him for the cost of the 1 CONT hearing. On a December evening in 1777, while returning from Bethlehem, he 1 CONT stopped at a house near Emmaus. There a man attacked him and accused him of 1 CONT being a Tory. In April 1778 Giering and 11 other Moravians from Emmaus were 1 CONT arrested by the militia and taken to Allentown, where they were imprisoned for 1 CONT refusing to take the test oath. When they continued to resist, they were 1 CONT marched to Easton and imprisoned. Several Brethren who testified in their 1 CONT behalf obtained their release; but a few days after they returned home, they 1 CONT were ordred to appear in Allentown to pay their fines. The county lieutenant, 1 CONT John Wetzel, was abusive toward them, but the committee decided to give the men 1 CONT a week to pay their fines. Two weeks later Giering was ordered to appear in 1 CONT Easton to answer charges of opposing independence. After spending 7 weeks in 1 CONT prison, he finally took the oath of allegiance and returned home to his family. 1 FAMI 2 RFN @178@ 0 @504@INDI 1 NAME Maria Catharina /Giering/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 17550227 2 PLAC ,Salisbury Twp,Lehigh,Pa. 1 CHRI 2 DATE 17550302 2 PLAC Moravian Church,Emmaus,Lehigh,Pa. 1 DEAT 2 DATE 17950610 2 PLAC ,,Lehigh,Pa. 1 BURI 2 PLAC Moravian Cemetry,Emmaus,Lehigh,Pa. 1 NOTE !
