So 2 CONT too were the friends of Tobe Mongan's son-in-law, James L. 2 CONT Williams. They were there to play cards. 1 NOTE But this night was different in one very important respect. It 2 CONT was the night the first Mongan of our clan in America was to die 2 CONT a violent death, one at the hands of a man he trusted, James 2 CONT Williams. 1 NOTE According to the Galveston Daily News, Tobe had a little trouble 2 CONT at closing time getting Williams and his pals to leave. Nevertheless 2 CONT he was successfull at about 1 a.m. in getting them to take their 2 CONT party out to the sidewalk in front of the saloon on 37th and Post 2 CONT Office. 1 NOTE Though he was successful, it apparently didn't sit well with Mrs. 2 CONT Mary Mongan, who from her bedroom above the saloon, could hear the 2 CONT men talking and carryng on. 1 NOTE At one point Mrs. Mongan even yelled out of her window, threatening 2 CONT to douse the young revelers with water if they continued singing. 2 CONT That didn't bother them. In fact, one man is reported as yelling 2 CONT back that she could throw all the water she wanted because they 2 CONT were under a shed. 1 NOTE Eventually, though, Tobe came out and yelled something at Jim who 2 CONT didn't like what he said. The two got into a fight and Jim pulled his 2 CONT Colt, firing one time into Tobe's stomach. 1 NOTE "Jim, you shot, me!" witnesses recalled Tobe crying. "I've been shot. 2 CONT The good Irish Catholic she was, Mrs. Mongan sent for a priest right 2 CONT away --- gotta have the last rites, you know --- then a cop and then 2 CONT a doctor. 1 NOTE Tobe was taken to the hospital and operated on 11 that morning. 2 CONT The slug that ripped through his intestines was removed and doctors 2 CONT thought he'd make it. 1 NOTE He lived one day longer. At his deathbed, on one side stood his 2 CONT brother Michael on the other, his pal Jimmy Riley. The rest of the 2 CONT family gathered round as the priest performed last rites. He was 2 CONT dead by 9 a.m. Thursday March 26. 1 NOTE The funeral, the news reports say, was "one of the largest ever 2 CONT witnessed in this city." No doubt, Tobe being a member of the 2 CONT Ancient Order of the Hibernians and the Emmet Benevolent Association 2 CONT helped. 1 NOTE It also helped that he was a man of "sterling character" and one of 2 CONT the Rev. Lee's "finest" parishoners. It probably didn't hurt either 2 CONT that he was a saloon keeper and a native of Roscommon, Ireland. 2 CONT He arrived in Galveston in 1872. (by boat? with brother?) 1 NOTE What became of Jimmy Williams? 1 NOTE His charges were immediately upgraded 2 CONT from assault with intent to commit murder to murder and a day or two 2 CONT later was indicted with Tobe Mongan's murder. 2 CONT He was later released on $2,500 bond, paid April 24, 1896, according 2 CONT to documents at the Galveston County District Clerk's Office. 1 NOTE Trial was on Tuesday, May 19, 1896, and according to testimony 2 CONT reported the next day in the Galveston Daily News under the 2 CONT headline, Williams Acquitted Of The Charge of Murder for Killing 2 CONT His Father-In-Law Tobe Mongan, Only Took (Jury) A Few Minutes, No 2 CONT Proof That He Fired The Fatal Shot, Williams' tale was as follows: 1 NOTE Williams said he stopped by Mongan's saloon Tuesday afternoon while 2 CONT workers repaired his "engine." It doesn't say what sort of engine, 2 CONT but considering they all lived near the railroad tracks, it was 2 CONT probably a train engine. 1 NOTE That afternoon, Williams testified, a dog "snapped at one of his 2 CONT children that (sic) was riding a wheel on the sidewalk" and he 2 CONT went next door to get his gun. Then after a long day of drinking, 2 CONT which included, he testified, a bottle of cognac between him and 2 CONT Tobe, night fell. 1 NOTE After the bottle of cognac, Williams testified, he remembered 2 CONT nothing except the noise of prisoners in the jail. 2 CONT Witnesses for Williams, including his wife, said they never saw 2 CONT him drunk and Williams testified that he had always had a good 2 CONT relationship with his father-in-law. 1 NOTE None of the witnesses who testified for the state in Judge Cavin's 2 CONT court said they saw Williams fire the shot. They only reported 2 CONT hearing the scuffle and the shot fired. 1 NOTE So following a lunch break and closing arguments that began at 3 2 CONT p.m., the jury retired to make their decision. They returned with 2 CONT a not guilty verdict. 1 NOTE Written in the hand of the foreman John W. Harris, the document 2 CONT on file at the District Clerk's Office reads as thousands others 2 CONT like it have: "We, the jury, find the defendant not guilty." 2 CONT After hearing the verdict, the news account says, "The accused 2 CONT was escorted from the courtroom by a crowd of friends, who 2 CONT were profuse in their congratulations to Williams and his 2 CONT wife, each of whom carried a babe in arms, their children." 1 NOTE Later records and obituaries indicate Bridget Williams 2 CONT lived in Cleburne. Perhaps that explains the only story 2 CONT Mary Margaret Mongan remembers sounding remotely like 2 CONT the one recounted here. 1 NOTE According to that story, told to her by her father, there 2 CONT was an incident in which someone in the family was shot and 2 CONT the one who did it was "run out of town." 2 CONT Perhaps after the jury acquitted Williams, he and Bridget 2 CONT were "run out of town." 1 NOTE In fact, in a Houston Post obituary for Mollie Mongan Garvin, 2 CONT Mrs. B. Williams is listed a living in Bakersfield, California. 2 CONT The time of Mollie's death was May 30, 1952. 1 NOTE According to records at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Dickinson, Tobias is 2 CONT buried in lot B-2 in Calvary Cemetery in Galveston. 2 CONT A 9-10 foot monument, with his name and that of his other offspring 2 CONT a son-in-law, wife and brother-in-law can be found at the cemetery. 1 NOTE On it confirms that he was born in County Roscommon and that he was 2 CONT born on Dec. 29, 1841. 1 NOTE Mary Margaret Mongan also indicates that she remembers that her dad, 2 CONT Tobias's grandson, remembers living near the railroad tracks at 2 CONT one time --- before moving to 4408 Broadway as a kid with his father 2 CONT Thomas. 1 NOTE M.M. Mongan also remembers dancing the waltz with her grandfather, 2 CONT Thomas Mongan, at a place called the Brown Mule on 37th, near Post 2 CONT Office Street. She thinks however it was closer to Winnie. 1 NOTE FROM THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF TOBIAS MONGAN 1 NOTE After some legalese confirming his death, it begins "...I Tobias 2 CONT Mongan declare this to be my last will and testament. I hereby will 2 CONT and devise to my wife Mary Mongan all the property owned and 2 CONT possessed by me of every kind and description whatsoever to 2 CONT have or dispose of as she may see proper in her own right forever. 2 CONT I appoint Mary Mongan, executrix of my estate and I 1 RELIeve her from 2 CONT giving bond on such..." 1 NOTE This mark 2 CONT Tobias X Mongan 1 NOTE From Page 243 of Book 31 of the Probate Minutes: 1 NOTE His inventory: 1 NOTE 1. More than that, though, were the buildings 2 CONT that were erected on the property. 1 NOTE Besides the huge home at 4408 Broadway (Block 224) built after his 2 CONT death, (see Mary Agnes Smith for detail on the home), he bought 2 CONT property at 37th and Post Office (Block 456), 43rd and H, (Block 2 CONT 282), and 35th and Market (Block 515). He also bought some 2 CONT property in Hitchcock, as his will indicates, but thus far I haven't 2 CONT had time to locate it. 1 NOTE According County Deed Records this is what he paid for the property 2 CONT mentioned above: 1 NOTE 1. NW 1/4 of Block 456 ............. $1,408 on April 29, 1881 2 CONT 2. SE 1/4 of Block 224 ............. 66 in Galveston City stock 2 CONT on April 16, 1883 2 CONT 3. Lot 8 in Block 515 ............. 650 on Feb. 21, 1887 2 CONT 4. NW 1/4 of Block 282 ............. 660 on Feb. 18, 1889 1 NOTE Most of this property was bought from the Galveston City Co. formed 2 CONT in 1838 by the founder of the City of Galveston to develop their 2 CONT enterprise: Block 456, 224 and 282. Block 515 was bought from James 2 CONT S. and Fannie McFarland of Oswego Co., New York. 1 NOTE In addition to the Broadway property, Tobias built on and developed 2 CONT the property at 37th and Post Office. According to the assessors 2 CONT abstracts in the Rosenberg Library Tobe built him quite a few homes 2 CONT there: The store, saloon and home on the corner at 3627, 3625, 3623 2 CONT and two separate but identical homes at 3619 and 3621 Post Office. 2 CONT Several other structures were built at 3613 1/2 and 3617, as well 2 CONT as 510, 512 and 514 37th Street. 1 NOTE This property was developed about the same time that his brother-in- 2 CONT law John Smith, who built at the corner of 36th and Post Office, 2 CONT built homes on his quarter of the block. The Carrolls, who were 2 CONT later to affiliate themselves with the Mongan's through the marriage 2 CONT of Margaret Carroll to Thomas Mongan, lived at 3607 Post Office, 2 CONT as renters of John Smith for some time at the turn of the century. 2 CONT Again I say, not bad for an Irish immigrant who lived in this 2 CONT country only 25 years, eh? 1 NOTE A COUPLE OF INTERESTING NOTES 1 NOTE In the 1880 Census when Bridget, Thomas and Mollie were just kids, 2 CONT Tobe and Mary had an 18-year-old white servant living with them 2 CONT by the name of Tillie Middleston. 1 NOTE Also, the only time, it appears, Tobias sold property was on Oct. 2 CONT 29, 1888 to Michael Mongan. He sold him the west half of Lot 10 and 2 CONT the east half of Lot 11 on Broadway next door for $400. But it seems 2 CONT Michael never built on the property and by 1893 the property fell 2 CONT into the hands of Frank Connolly. 1 NOTE Since beginning my research on Tobe Mongan in 1992, I've long 2 CONT speculated Michael Mongan of Winnie Street was his brother. Though 2 CONT I've never found documented proof, I did find several coincidences: 1 NOTE Baptismal records of their children which showed cross sponsorships 2 CONT of people with the same names, an obituary for MM, which showed he 2 CONT had three nieces and a nephew and others details. 1 NOTE But the most convincing evidence comes from Avanelle Lane Durham, 2 CONT MM's granddaughter. She notes, independent of anything I've done, 2 CONT that the two were brothers and provides amazingly good detail on 2 CONT his children and on my great grandfather's children. 1 NOTE Her source could be her mother or other relative, but whatever it is it 2 CONT certianly 2 CONT is uncannily accurate for someone so distantly related and from 2 CONT so far away (Indiana). 1 NOTE It turns out her source was her mother. Though I still don't have a 2 CONT document to prove it, there is little doubt now that Michael is Tobe's 2 CONT brother. 1 NOTE The document arrived in the mail a few days after May 10 1994. 1 NOTE ALD sent me a copy of a handwritten note her mother compiled sometime 2 CONT between 1964 and 1969 that states without a doubt that Michael's 2 CONT brother was Tobias, Michael's mother was Mary Jennings and that 2 CONT Tobias had five children, one of whom was Thomas, who had four 2 CONT children. 1 NOTE She even noted that Eldred had no children and that 2 CONT my grandfather Tobias had one son, Tobias Jr. 1 NOTE Short of having a marriage or birth record for Michael that states 2 CONT who his mother was, this is about the best proof, independent or 2 CONT otherwise someone could have. 1 NOTE Baptismal record for the Parish of Kiltullagh, in the Diocese 2 CONT of Tuam for the years 1839-1880, found on microfilm through 2 CONT the Family History Center, Church of Latter-day Saints 2 CONT (Mormons) shows a Toby Mongan being baptised by 2 CONT the Rev. F. (looks like) Kearny on Jan. 30, 1842. 1 NOTE His parents are identified as Thomas Mongan and Mary Jennings. 2 CONT Sponsor was Mary Higgins. (A further search of that film show 2 CONT a close kinship between Jennings, Higgins and Mongans.) 1 NOTE Ref no. for the film is British Film Area: 0926226. 2 CONT Though there is no secondary confirmation that Toby is indeed 2 CONT the Tobias Mongan I've been researching at this date (June 13, 2 CONT 1993), it seems improbable that he could be any other. 1 NOTE Some reasons: All records, including his own grave marker, 2 CONT indicate he was born in Co. Roscommon, Dec. 29, 1841. The one 2 CONT exception is his declaration of intent, which shows his birth 2 CONT being in 1845. 1 NOTE Second, for any Mongan to be baptised in Co. Roscommon one month 2 CONT after the birth of Tobias Mongan, great odds would have to be 2 CONT defied. 1 NOTE Furthermore, the odds of that Mongan being a "Toby" 2 CONT born to a Thomas (the name Tobias gave to his first son) 2 CONT and baptised one month after Tobias' birth in Co. Roscommon 2 CONT become almost incredible. 1 NOTE Other support for this being the right one is according to 2 CONT Griffiths Valuation for Ireland, which can be found on micro- 2 CONT fiche at the Clayton Genealogical Library in Houston, shows 2 CONT a Thomas and Michael Mongan living in House #1 next door 2 CONT to a John Mongan in House #2, both of which was leased from 2 CONT a Col. Fulke S. Greville in the Townland of Pollanalty 2 CONT East in the parish of Kiltullah in the Baroney of Castlereagh 2 CONT for the year of 1855. 1 NOTE The point: Two of the male names were used by Tobias in America 2 CONT and the name Michael was his brothers own. So it's conceivable 2 CONT that Thomas Mongan named his second son after his brother. 1 NOTE Finally, I checked parish records through the FHC/LDS film 2 CONT archives for Mongans found in other parts of Roscommon County 2 CONT for 1855: Kilbride Parish where a Micheal Mongan showed up on 2 CONT Griffiths didn't pan out, nor did the parishs of Cam and Kiltoom 2 CONT in which Griffiths recorded a Dennis and Dominick Mongan. 1 NOTE The only other Mongan in Griffiths for Co. Roscommon was an 2 CONT Andrew Mongan in the Parish of Roscommon and Kilteevan. I didn't 2 CONT check film archieves for that parish because "Andrew" is a 2 CONT foreign name and by then I had come across the Toby in Kiltullagh. 1 NOTE Yet, I have no second confirmation of this Toby being The Tobias 2 CONT which troubles me. Even more troubling is Michael Mongan, Tobe's 2 CONT brother who was born in 1853 (if the age of death listed in his 2 CONT obituary in the GDN can be believed), doesn't show up in the 2 CONT baptismal records. 1 NOTE One possibility, though, is the GDN got the age wrong, saying 2 CONT his age at death was 59 in 1912, when in fact it was 69, which 2 CONT would place his birth in 1843, two years after Tobe's. 1 NOTE A check of the baptismal records, low and behold, does have a 2 CONT baptismal being performed on an offspring of Thomas Mongan and 2 CONT Mary Jennings on March 1, 1843. Yet, the film is not clear, 2 CONT nor is the handwriting legible, so it's not clear if the 2 CONT child's name is "Michael." Though my best guess is it is "Thomas." 1 NOTE Could Michael have been actually Thomas Michael Mongan? 1 NOTE Finally for the record, because I don't think I've recorded it 2 CONT anywhere else, the town Thomas Mongan and Mary Jennings lived 2 CONT in at the time of the baptisms was Coolisher or Coolisker in 2 CONT Kiltullagh Parish. 1 NOTE OTHER SOURCES MENTIONING OR REFERRING TO TOBE MONGAN 1 NOTE 1900 Census for Galveston, in which his widow says they were married 2 CONT 28 years. 1 NOTE Galveston Daily News, March 24, 25, 26 etc, 1896 1 NOTE Mortuary Record, 1896, Texas Room, Rosenberg Library 1 NOTE Calvary Cemetary for lot location 1 NOTE Rosenberg Library for Death Certificate, (it's misfiled under 2 CONT Morgan, though) 1 NOTE Galveston City Directory for 1872 lists a T.E. But it's not clear whether she meant she was 2 CONT married 28 years to Tobias Mongan at the time of his death, 2 CONT which would place their marriage as being sometime in 2 CONT 1868 when she was 16, or whether she meant it had been 2 CONT a full 28 years since her marriage in 1872, a year before the 2 CONT birth of Bridget in 1873. 1 NOTE Until I find her marriage record, I will go with 1872 as the 2 CONT year of their marriage. 1 NOTE By the way, that Census that was taken when they lived at 2 CONT 4408 Broadway, also shows she had five of her six children 2 CONT living: Bridget, 27, and Thomas, 25, both of whom were living 2 CONT elsewhere. Mollie, 20, Johnnie, 18, and Jennie, 14, were still 2 CONT living with her. 1 NOTE Katie died after living only 3 days in 1884. 1 NOTE The last U.S. Census in which she appears, 1910, Mary is living 2 CONT at 2305 Texas Ave. in Houston with Mollie (Mongan) Garvin, 25, 2 CONT a widow, Mollie's 3-year-old daughter, (her name is not legible) and 2 CONT Jennie, 20. 1 NOTE Mary's age is given as 50 years. As you can tell, 2 CONT either the census taker didn't care to verify or these women 2 CONT weren't about to give their real ages. 1 NOTE Interesting side note: Fred Garvin, Mollie's husband, was from 2 CONT Tennessee, according to this census.) 1 NOTE The earliest census record that I can find with both Tobias and 2 CONT Mary Smith Mongan is 1880, when they were living at 3627 Post 2 CONT Office in Galveston. 1 NOTE Living with them at the time were Thomas W. Mongan, 4, 2 CONT Bridget, 6, Mary (Mollie), 9 months, and a white servant named 2 CONT Tillie Middleston, 18. 1 NOTE Tobias is 35 and Mary Agnes (Smith) Mongan is 28. He, if his gravestone is right, is 39. 2 CONT (Another interesting note: Living next door is a Michael Smith, 31, 2 CONT a boarder.) 1 NOTE OTHER INFO ON MARY AGNES SMITH 1 NOTE Though they are not as "official" as the U.S. Census, 2 CONT Galveston City Directories also have her listed after the shooting 2 CONT death of her husband. 1 NOTE The 1896-97 Galveston City Directory states that she is the widow 2 CONT of Tobias Mongan and that she lives at 3627 Post Office and sells 2 CONT groceries, operates a saloon and furnishes rooms at that same address. 1 NOTE The directory also indicates that her son Thomas Mongan lives with 2 CONT her. He is listed as a clerk for the Santa Fe freight depot. 2 CONT (Two years later, Thomas would marry Margaret Carroll.) 1 NOTE By the time the Galveston City Directory for 1909-10 comes out 2 CONT Mary Smith Mongan has been living in her new home at 4408 Broadway 2 CONT for 10 years --- if the 1898 city directory, which shows her living 2 CONT there, is to be believed. 1 NOTE By now Bridget and her husband John Williams, the man who shot Tobe, 2 CONT is long gone. 1 NOTE Thomas is living, according to the same directory, 2 CONT at 3621 Post Office, and the only child living with Mary Smith Mongan is 2 CONT "Miss Jennie Mongan," as the directory indicates. 1 NOTE Mollie must be in Houston married to Mr. Garvin. Jennie's age at this 2 CONT time is 24 or 25. 1 NOTE Back at the old homestead on 37th and Post Office is a Patrick Mongan, 2 CONT who according to his will, is the cousin of Tobe's son Thomas. More than 2 CONT likely though he is Thomas' second cousin and Tobe's first. 1 NOTE The reason I say that is the ages don't jibe: Thomas in 1909 would 2 CONT be 33 or 34, while Pat Mongan is in his early 60s. (SEE PAT MONGAN 2 CONT FOR DETAILS.) 1 NOTE In 1910, as the census for Houston and Galveston show, Mary and 2 CONT her daughters are in Houston and a Scottish (or Scots Irish?) family by 2 CONT the name of McDonald is renting the home at 4408 Broadway. 1 NOTE Peter McDonald, 50, and his wife, Mary, 38, have seven children, ranging 2 CONT in age from 17 to 4, and a lodger Edward E. To the left of the pantry was a 2 CONT large broom closet. 1 NOTE Out the back door was a big field where the kids would play ball and the 2 CONT outhouse stood as a reminder of times gone by. On both sides of the home 2 CONT were large plum trees. 1 NOTE According to Galveston County deed records, Tobias paid $66 2 CONT in stock from the Galveston City Co. on April 16, 1883, for the 2 CONT southeast quarter of Block 224, which is the corner of Broadway 2 CONT and 44th Street today. 1 NOTE And according to the County Assessor Abstracts for the late 1890s, 2 CONT the home was shaped like a fat "T" with the bottom of the T facing 2 CONT Broadway and fronting a porch. Behind the home were two square- 2 CONT shapped buildings. 1 NOTE MMM says that the house remained in the family until after T.W. 2 CONT Mongan died in 1948, when Aelred and Thomasine, who inherited it 2 CONT sold it. 1 NOTE A family Bible held by Tobias Thomas Mongan II has an entry 2 CONT for the death of Mary Agnes Mongan, Sept. 4, 1917. By Feb. 20th we were living in Alta Loma, now 2 CONT Santa Fe. 1 NOTE A little more than three years after we settled in Texas, she became 2 CONT sick. 1 NOTE A day or two before her death, she talked with my mom 2 CONT about a few snow flakes that were falling that January day in Alta 2 CONT Loma and the chance snow would fall in Galveston. 1 NOTE Then just before hanging up, Mamaw remarked about how a blackbird had 2 CONT perched itself in her windowsill. 1 NOTE Birds. One of the first memories I have of my grandmother is her small 2 CONT pudgy body bent over our bird cage at our home in Norfolk, Va., singing 2 CONT in a high-pitched voice, "Hello, pretty bird. Hello, pretty bird." 1 NOTE Mamaw liked birds. She also liked to talk. 1 NOTE That's one of the things I liked most about her. While all the other old 2 CONT folks would treat me like a kid or a pain in their ass, she would talk to 2 CONT me like I was on her level and had known her all my life. 1 NOTE She loved talking about family more than anything and while it may 2 CONT have seemed trivial to those who might have heard us talking it 2 CONT was like hearing tales of long ago to me. 1 NOTE She told me once, while I sat at the foot of her bed in Galveston, about 2 CONT her mother who was a Wenzel and how her mother, who I later learned was a 2 CONT Hermann, would stand at one end of the island and wave a white sheet each 2 CONT night before going to bed, just to let everyone know everything was 2 CONT alright. 1 NOTE She also told me during that same conversation that her mother's father 2 CONT was a grocery store owner and let Indians stay in his attic and would 2 CONT spend lots of time up there eating cheese and talking with them. 1 NOTE One Sunday night after Ed Sullivan and after she had filled me and 2 CONT Kevin full of coke in the small bottles and M&Ms served in small 2 CONT glass dishes with bumps on the outside that made the candy look 2 CONT bigger when you looked through them, the conversation turned to 2 CONT crime for some reason. 1 NOTE She told two stories: one about my uncle Toby getting chased down 2 CONT by a black kid (she never said "nigger," which my grandfather would 2 CONT say as easily as he would one of his kids names). Toby ran into 2 CONT the back yard, a trumpet in its case in one hand, school books in the 2 CONT other. 1 NOTE The kid, she said, was crazy. The story has no point, it's just a 2 CONT vivid memory. 1 NOTE The other story was about a man who tried breaking into their front 2 CONT door one night and my grandfather running into the bedroom, pulling 2 CONT out a rusted old pistol and waving it through the beveled glass of 2 CONT their front door. 1 NOTE "He was going to shoot the man and pull him into the house," I 2 CONT remember her saying. "He thought that if he pulled him into his 2 CONT house he could say he broke in and was justified. But I told 2 CONT him not to. I wouldn't be able to look at my front porch again 2 CONT without seeing a dead man on it." 1 NOTE But Mamaw was far from squeamish. 1 NOTE One night, while getting ready to take my bath in their old footed 2 CONT tub, I was removing an ID bracelet I'd gotten for Christmas. It was 2 CONT the coolest present besides my bike I got that year. 1 NOTE As I was putting the bracelet on the back of the commode it slipped into 2 CONT the toilet, just as it was flushing. 1 NOTE I yelled out something, and in ran Mamaw. Before I knew it, her 2 CONT hand thrust deep into the toilet bowl, grabbed on to the bracelet 2 CONT and pulled it out. 1 NOTE Before I could put it back on though, she soaked it in rubbing 2 CONT alcohol. The toilet wasn't even dirty. 1 NOTE Alcohol. She had more bottles of rubbing alcohol in her bathroom 2 CONT and kitchen than in all of John Sealy Hospital, which is an 2 CONT indication of her fixation with cleanliness. 1 NOTE Whenever she'd give you a coke or the adults a beer, out came a 2 CONT Kleenex from one of her pockets and before you could take the 2 CONT drink from her, she rub the top of the bottle clean. 1 NOTE She also wrapped the door knobs in Kleenex. I always thought that 2 CONT was strange, but later one spring Saturday or Sunday, while 2 CONT I was playing outside, I found out why --- or so my mother tells 2 CONT me. 1 NOTE Pawzee worked on the railroads and for some reason she got it in 2 CONT her head that he was fooling around on her. Maybe it was true. 1 NOTE Who really knows? 1 NOTE But that day they rolled up in the shell driveway of our house in Alta 2 CONT Loma in their black 1964 Chevrolet Impala and Mamaw wouldn't get out of 2 CONT the car. Pawzee walked inside and said something to my mother and they 2 CONT both came back outside. 1 NOTE "The woman's crazy and I'm tired of it," Pawzee said to my mother. "I've 2 CONT brought her to stay with you.'' 1 NOTE With that he then began to walk down the shell road, leaving her 2 CONT to sit in the car her arms folded, black pill box hat place atop 2 CONT her netted jet-black hair, eyes staring out over the hood of the 2 CONT Impala. 1 NOTE Somehow, Pawzee got tired of walking and came back to the house. 1 NOTE By then, they were both inside and my mother was making peace 2 CONT between them. 1 NOTE The Kleenex on the door knobs and the alcohol, I learned later was 2 CONT because she feared Pawzee would bring home germs and infect her. 1 NOTE She was a woman ahead of her time. In this age of AIDS, who would 2 CONT have questioned her. But for that time, it seemed a little extreme. 1 NOTE Why he would have fooled around on her is beside me. Old pictures 2 CONT I've seen of her make her appear like a china doll. 1 NOTE One picture, I don't know where it is now, shows her at the piano, her 2 CONT perfectly round face, black hair drapped around her face in the flapper 2 CONT style, 2 CONT and a huge ear-to-ear grin. 1 NOTE The piano is significant. She supposedly had an "ear" for music. 2 CONT Relatives say she could play any instrument after hearing a song. 2 CONT I've been told she particularly liked the piano and banjo. 1 NOTE It's interesting to note that that musical ability apparently found 2 CONT its way into the genetic makeup of my cousin Toby. If I'm not 2 CONT mistaken, he too has the talent, which I rememeber seeing him 2 CONT demonstrate on piano. 1 NOTE Though I never saw her play an instrument, I do know that she loved 2 CONT listening to music. Her favorites on Sunday were Lawrence Welk, 2 CONT Frank Sinatra and Wayne Newton. I remember her liking the song 2 CONT "Danke Schoen" by Wayne Newton and "Strangers In the Night" by 2 CONT Sinatra. 1 NOTE But she was no musical fuddy duddy. I remember watching the Doors 2 CONT at her house on Ed Sullivan's TV show and she said she liked the 2 CONT music. Light My Fire, I remember was a cover of the more sedate 2 CONT original of Jose Feliciano's. Maybe that was it. 1 NOTE Another aspect of her I remember well is that she was superstitious, 2 CONT much like her Irish husband, who used to cross his fingers and 2 CONT cross his arms behind his back to ward off perceived evil. 1 NOTE I wonder if her superstitious nature has to do with a recent story 2 CONT my mother told me about Mamaw's birth. 1 NOTE It seems when Mamaw was born she had what folks called a "veil" on 2 CONT her face, a piece of transparent skin attached to her forehead, covering 2 CONT the length of her face. 1 NOTE The story goes that such a veil blesses the newborn with special 2 CONT powers and is in itself good luck, especially to men at sea. Recognizing 2 CONT they had something of value my great grandfather Henry S. Birkmeyer sold 2 CONT the veil of lucky skin to a sea captain. 1 NOTE As for whether it brought the captain luck, no one knows, but as 2 CONT for bringing Mamaw special powers, I've just recounted one, her 2 CONT ability to play music by ear. 1 NOTE Another incident that makes it hard to discount the "powers of the 2 CONT veil story" -- if you let your imagination run wild for a second -- 2 CONT is what happened while the priest was saying rosary at her wake. 1 NOTE Two glass candle holders, one placed at the head of her casket, the 2 CONT other at the foot, shattered within seconds of each other. The first 2 CONT loud pop of broken glass rattled some of the people, but the second 2 CONT loud pop downright made everyone in the parlor at Malloy & Son 2 CONT Funeral Home gasp out loud. 1 NOTE Afterward, everyone made some comment about it and my mother, either 2 CONT teasing or telling the truth, said "She always said she'd come back & 2 CONT haunt us from her grave." 1 NOTE I don't know why but whenever I think of my grandmother's death 2 CONT I think of that cold January morning in 1970 and the black bird 2 CONT perched in her window. 0 @I032@ INDI 1 NAME Ladislav K. /Siller/ 1 SEX M 1 FAMS @F226@ 0 @I033@ INDI 1 NAME Henry /Birkmeyer/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 PLAC New Orleans, La. 1 DEAT 2 DATE 28 Dec 1916 2 PLAC League City, Texas 1 CHR 2 PLAC League City Cemetery (?) 1 CONF 2 PLAC Tinner 1 OCCU Catholic 1 FAMS @F228@ 1 NOTE BIO:From the Census record of 1900 taken in Galveston: 2 CONT Residence: 3716 Broadway 2 CONT Wife: Clementine Birkmeyer, born 1-1842 in Louisiana. Born in Italy and 2 CONT coming to America in 1882 at the age of 25 he sought him- 2 CONT self a wife. Her name was Lena Newmann. She was born 2 CONT in Galveston, Texas. 2 CONT He should have looked a little harder if family lore is 2 CONT correct. 2 CONT Vincent and Lena had several children, five in all. They were: 2 CONT Josephine, the great grandmother of Peggy Dudley Lanterman, 2 CONT Charles John Alexander Guzzi, b. June 29, 1894, Frank David Guzzi, 2 CONT b. Dec. 1897, Louis Emil, (weird huh, she had a Louis as a brother 2 CONT and later married a Louis Dudley) b. SEP 1899. 2 CONT Anthony Guzzi died at the age of 4. He never lived to see the 2 CONT infamous day his father was gunned down. 2 CONT Also living in the house was Nick Guzzi, Vincent's brother. 2 CONT Nick, according to the 1900 Census, was a 41, two year younger 2 CONT than Vincent. He also had the ominous occupation of salesman 2 CONT (being a Lanterman, the one writing this, that has an spooky ring). 2 CONT Vincent was a simple merchant. As to how our great government 2 CONT Census takers differentiated between a merchant --- one who 2 CONT sells --- from a salesman --- one who sells --- is beyond my 2 CONT comprehension. But then that bureaucrats for you. 2 CONT The deed is done. 2 CONT According to Alice Jane Guzzi Pratt, the daughter of Charles mentioned 2 CONT above, his loving wife and even more loving mother-in-law (young men 2 CONT see story about Tobias Mongan for what in-laws are good for) told him 2 CONT his horse was loose. 2 CONT Not wanting to lose a good horse, Vincent, said to be a smallish man, 2 CONT ran after the steed. 2 CONT But he got no further than his property line. Waiting for him outside 2 CONT his home at 728 Ave. D., was the man who would take his life and 2 CONT run off with his wife (nice rhyme eh?) and children to Nashville, 2 CONT Tenn. 2 CONT Who was the man who shot Vincent Guzzi? Well, according to Alice Pratt 2 CONT it was a man called Nix, thought to be a medical student at the 2 CONT island's University of Texas Medical Branch. 2 CONT But it sure is a coincidence that a man named Nick (remember him, the 2 CONT salesman) lived with Lena and Vincent. 2 CONT Could it have been brother Nick? Stay tuned genealogy fans. 2 CONT So what happened to Lena and Nick ... um ... Nix? you may ask. 2 CONT According to Alice Pratt, they lived out the remainder of their 2 CONT lives in Nashville. What a song!! 2 CONT Have any doubts about the Nashville connection? Margaret Dudley 2 CONT Lanterman says her grandfather Louis Dudley II says he remembers 2 CONT visiting Nashville with his mother Josephine Guzzi Dudley and his 2 CONT father Louis Earnest Dudley. 2 CONT Things that need to be checked to confirm all this: Death record 2 CONT for Vincent Guzzi. Hard times in the aftermath of the Thirty Yea 2 CONT rs War, high taxes, vineyard crop failures and conscription of labor 2 CONT all led to an exodus of young Germans to America. 2 CONT The route was by boat down the Rhine to Rotterdam, where passage 2 CONT on English ships could be arranged. So probably in the cold, early 2 CONT Spring of 1738, Johan Peter --- whom his friends called "Peter" 2 CONT --- gathered clothing, food and bedding and embarked. 2 CONT He was 24 and had a fair education. The ride down the Rhine was no 2 CONT pleasure trip. The boat fare covered only transportation and 2 CONT passengers had to fend for themselves for food and sleeping 2 CONT arrangements, camping on shore each night. 2 CONT The Atlantic crossing was hardly any better and many people became 2 CONT ill and died. 2 CONT Johan's arrival in Philadelphia is documented by papers still 2 CONT there. One of these is the pledge of allegiance to the government, 2 CONT required of all immigrants at that time, in the following words: 2 CONT "At the courthouse of Philadelphia, September 20, 1738, present 2 CONT Clement Plumsted, Sam'l Hassel, Thomas Grifith, Andrew Hamilton, 2 CONT Esqrs: The Palatinates whose names are underwritten imported on the 2 CONT ships "Nancy" and "Friendship", William Wallace and Henry Beach, 2 CONT Commanders, from Rotterdam but last from Dover in England, did this 2 CONT day take and subscribe to the oaths to the government, viz:. ..." 2 CONT Johan Peter's signature is the sixth of a long list, of which a 2 CONT facsimile is reproduced here: 2 CONT [6x4.5]Johan's will and signature. 2 CONT His signature (last name only) also appears on the "Nancy's" 2 CONT passenger list. In both cases, the curl mark over the third letter 2 CONT of the last name is plain and definitely indicates a U, according to 2 CONT scholars of German script of the era. Thus he signed his name 2 CONT Lautermann at this time. 2 CONT One theory is that due to frequent mistaking of the U for an N as 2 CONT time went by, he eventually adopted Lanterman as the Anglicized 2 CONT spelling. A few descendants, however, adhered to the Lautermann 2 CONT spelling. (e.g., his grandson William, #2 in Lantermans In America). 2 CONT Little is known about Johan's first 20 years in America. He met 2 CONT and about 1739, married Elizabeth Peterson, whose family is said to 2 CONT have antedated Johan in America (but another tradition has him 2 CONT meeting her on board the ship.), and they may have first settled 2 CONT along Papakating Creek in Wantage Township, Sussex County, N.J. 2 CONT [5.5x4.25]Blairstown and Knowlton, N.J. 2 CONT Nothing definite is known about Elizabeth's family, although she 2 CONT is said to have had a brother, Daniel, who associated with Johan in 2 CONT operating a grist mill. Johan apparently had no particular 1 RELIgious 2 CONT affiliations and his wife is credited with influencing him to become 2 CONT the faithful Presbyterian that he was in later years. 2 CONT There are conflicting stories about his early occupations, the 2 CONT most persistent of which is that he engaged in the construction and 2 CONT operation of water-powered flour mills. But first he had to clear 2 CONT some land, build a one-room cabin, and plant crops to support his 2 CONT family. The country was wild and rugged, still inhabited by some 2 CONT Indians as well as by wolves and panthers, and almost everything 2 CONT had to be made by hand, with some help from settlers. 2 CONT Johan apparently moved about, possibly into lower New York state 2 CONT and eastern Pennsylvania, perhaps building and selling log houses 2 CONT and mills, then moving on to a new site. The first definite records 2 CONT begin about 1773 after some of his children had grown up and 2 CONT married, when he purchased 166 acres of former William Penn 2 CONT land in what was then called Knowlton, a mile or so south of 2 CONT present day Blairstown, N.J. 2 CONT There he established a farm near a settlement known as Union 2 CONT Brick, where he spent the rest of his life. The name was by 2 CONT association with Union Brick Church, which Johan and several 2 CONT of his sons helped build on land donated by Benjamin Luse and 2 CONT Walter Brown. 2 CONT [7.25x5.25]From Lanterman's in America. 2 CONT This building along with the others has long since disappeared, 2 CONT but the cemetery associated with the church is still maintained in 2 CONT excellent condition and well worth a visit. 2 CONT Another church in whose cemetery Lantermans were buried was the 2 CONT Yellow Frame Church. This was located in upper or northern 2 CONT Hardwicke Township, a few miles northeast of Blairstown. All 2 CONT traces of it and its cemetery are now gone. 2 CONT Johan is reputed to have supplied grain and other provisions to 2 CONT Washinton's army during the Revolutionary War, and at least two of 2 CONT his sons served in the army. He became a U.S. citizen through 2 CONT naturalization in 1768, by act of the N.J. legislature. 2 CONT [2.5x3.5]Shannon Lanterman salutes him on July 3, 1986. 2 CONT Johan and Elizabeth had six sons and six daughters who grew up and 2 CONT married. The older ones moved away. Peter, the third son, went west 2 CONT to Penn., thence to Fleming, Kentucky, about 1818 moved to Spring 2 CONT Creek, Ill., about six miles west of the center of present day 2 CONT Springfield. 2 CONT Some of the history of this branch is recorded in a Lanterman-Robb 2 CONT book, which, unfortunately, contains several errors -- one which 2 CONT places Peter's birthplace in Germany --- but Johan's will specifically 2 CONT mentions this son, Peter. 2 CONT Jacob, the seventh child, inherited his father's farm and was an 2 CONT executor of his estate. Abraham, the 10th child, acquired a nearby 2 CONT farm and is said to have operated a hotel in Union Brick. 2 CONT W.F. Mongan, Sr., Pat, James, Michael, Jr. et al, 2 CONT the brother? 2 CONT Here are some facts to consider and keep in mind until I get 2 CONT definite proof. But until then I will operate under the assumption 2 CONT that this Mike Mongan is another relative and Michael Mongan is 2 CONT the brother of Tobias. 2 CONT 1. Mike Mongan (#295) is living at 4418 Ave K with his wife 2 CONT Kate, age 50 in 1900, son John, age 23, and his wife 2 CONT Luantha (Buck) Mongan, age 22. Except for Luantha, 2 CONT all were born in Ireland and immigrated to the U.S. in 2 CONT 1881, this according to the 1900 census. 2 CONT (So it seems this John is not the John of Tobias and now 2 CONT it appears there were two John Mongans who died in the 2 CONT 1900 Storm. The GDN for Oct. 7, 1900 show the Mongans 2 CONT at 4418 K died. I have yet to confirm, the Mongan family 2 CONT bible which shows Johnnie Mongan, as he was called, died 2 CONT also in the 1900 Storm.) 2 CONT 2. Michael Mongan (#405) lived much of his time at 43rd and Winnie. 2 CONT And in one of his census reports he claims to have been born in Aug. 2 CONT 1839, a birthdate, that, while it contradicts the age given in his 2 CONT obituary, is much closer to that of Tobias. 2 CONT 3. There are only three other Mongan's listed in the City Directory 2 CONT for 1882-83, besides Tobias Mongan, Pat, Martin and Mike. While 2 CONT Pat and Martin are listed living with a John May, Mike is living 2 CONT with Tobias. 2 CONT Pat I discovered in other probate records is the brother of Martin 2 CONT and the "cousin" of Thomas W. Mongan, who lives at 3621 Postoffice 2 CONT at the time of Pat's death. The funeral, according to Pat's obit, 2 CONT was held at 3621. 2 CONT 4.According to probate documents for Mike #295, shortly after the 2 CONT 1900 Storm, Tobias' son, Thomas W. Mongan, pays a $1,000 bond 2 CONT to be temporary administrator for the estate of Mike Mongan. 2 CONT The inventory of Mike Mongan's estate includes the west half of 2 CONT lot 11 and the east half of lot 12 in block 164, worth $350 and 2 CONT a bridge warrant worth $50. This property would be on Ave. K. 2 CONT TW applied in October of 1900 for the temporary status and was 2 CONT granted it on Nov. 21, 1900. 2 CONT But for some reason TW 1 1 RELInquished his temporary status to Pat 2 CONT Mongan on September 21, 1901. By October 25, 1901, Pat had 2 CONT filed for temporary status by paying a $1,000 bond. 2 CONT Later after Pat dies, his will is probated and as part of his 2 CONT inventory he leaves his "cousin" Thomas W. Mongan, the same 2 CONT property he received from TW in 1901. Pat also left his 2 CONT brother Martin $5. 2 CONT But from Pat's obituary, it appears Martin has died as it says 2 CONT he has no other living relatives, besides Thomas W. Mongan. 2 CONT 5. All this is a long way of saying Michael Mongan and Mike Mongan 2 CONT were clearly two different people, one dying in 1912 and the other 2 CONT in the 1900 Storm, and that Tobias'son temporarily took possesion 2 CONT of Mike's property, handing it off to a cousin, whom Thomas later 2 CONT buried and that though Tom W. Mongan, Sr.'s obituary says he arrived 2 CONT in Galveston about 1879, that must be wrong because there is no 2 CONT listing for Michael Mongan in 1882, other than the one living with 2 CONT Tobias. 2 CONT Some reasons Micheal #405 is Tobias' brother: 2 CONT A. 2 CONT Michael Mongan's obit says he was born in Roscommon and he named his 2 CONT first-born son Thomas William Mongan. As I have documented elsewhere 2 CONT Thomas Mongan and Mary Jennings are the father of Tobias. 2 CONT It could have been common for Michael to name his son after his dad 2 CONT just as Tobias did. Right? 2 CONT No way to counter that --- other than I never found a Michael Mongan 2 CONT baptised in 1853 or 54, the year Michael would have been born 2 CONT according to his obit in 1912. 2 CONT But then again, Michael's census data for 1900 says he was born in 2 CONT Aug. 1839 and unfortunately the LDS Family History Center doesn't 2 CONT have baptismal records for Kiltullagh parish on microfilm that 2 CONT far back. The LDS's archives only begin in Sept. 1839. 2 CONT B. 2 CONT Michael Mongan's obit lists as surviving him three nieces and a 2 CONT nephew. Mollie, Bridget, Jennie and Thomas would fit that bill. 2 CONT But so too would the offspring of his wife's siblings, living in 2 CONT Galveston, if in fact they did, or back in Ireland. 2 CONT So, it appears despite the close relationship Tobias' son had 2 CONT with Mike #295 regarding his will, Michael #405's birthdate and 2 CONT close relationship he and Tobias had regarding the sponsoring of 2 CONT each other's children into the Catholic Church seem to make Michael 2 CONT #405 the prime candidate as Tobias' brother. 2 CONT City Directory, 1882-83, 1896-97. 2 CONT Probate documents, Book 37, pp. 135, 136, Book 38, p. 128, 2 CONT Book 39, p. 80, Book 40, pp. 228, 392, Book 59, p. 80: 2 CONT Galveston County Clerk's Office. 2 CONT Pat Mongan's obituary, GDN, 5-14-1913. 2 CONT An Oct 9th 1900 edition of the GDN for proof Mike's family died 2 CONT in the 1900 Storm. 0 @I207@ INDI 1 NAME Margaret /Hermann/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 17 Oct 1844 2 PLAC Loraine, France 1 DEAT 2 DATE 10 Feb 1924 2 PLAC Galveston, Texas 1 CHR 2 PLAC Calvary 1 CONF 2 PLAC Housewife 1 OCCU Catholic, St. Joseph 1 FAMS @F008@ 1 FAMC @F044@ 1 NOTE FROM HER OBITUARY: Galveston Daily News, Feb. 11, 1924 1 NOTE WENZEL --- At 9 p.m. Feb. 10, Mrs. Margaret Wenzel, age 81, widow of the 2 CONT late Lewis (sic) Wenzel. Wenzel also appears in the 1910 Census. She gives her age as 2 CONT 65, is a widow and said she immigrated to the U.S. in 1855. 1 NOTE The address is 1103 37th Street. Others living with her included Adeila 2 CONT F. In the 2 CONT Baptismal record she is cited as the mother of Mary Louise Wenzel, Andrew 2 CONT Henry Wenzel and Louis Davidson Wenzel. Though the city directory doesn't 2 CONT indicate, she is apparently a widow by then since she is listed as the 2 CONT head of the house at west side of 37th street between avenues K and L. 1 NOTE Mary Margaret Mongan Lanterman also says she remembers meeting 2 CONT many Hermanns as a young girl. 1 NOTE SOURCES 1 NOTE 1870 Census, Galveston, 4th Ward, ED 287, p. 6, lines 8-14. 2 CONT The record shows a 25-year-old Margaret living with 2 CONT her father and mother, husband Louis Wenzel, 27, daughter 2 CONT Mary (Wenzel) Birkmeyer, 1, and brothers David, 14, and 2 CONT John 5. 1 NOTE The census also shows that she and husband were both 2 CONT born in Germany, she in Prussia and he in Saxony. 1 NOTE The writing is not too clear on the Census. The Indians, incidently, he let 2 CONT live in an attic space over his home or store. This story comes from 2 CONT Clementine Clare Birkmeyer, his granddaughter, to her grandson Kenneth 2 CONT Gene Lanterman. 1 NOTE There is also a story, though not yet confirmed (3-20-1993) that he shot 2 CONT himself to death. 1 NOTE As for when he died, I'm still not sure but it must be some time after 2 CONT 1878, since he is listed in the 1878-79 Galveston City Directory as a 2 CONT grocer living at 37th and K. It also had to occur after he conceived 2 CONT Andrew Wenzel in late 1873 (Andrew was born May, 1874. 1 NOTE That means his death came between late 1873 and 1878. 1 NOTE Determining when Louis arrived in Galveston is just as difficult. 1 NOTE The earliest availble city directory 1859-60 shows his in-laws already 2 CONT here, but not him. The first time he appears in available city 2 CONT directories is 1867, where he is listed as living at No. 68 and 70, 20th 2 CONT Street opposite the market. The same information his reported in the 1878 2 CONT directory. 1 NOTE We know he is already in Galveston by 1869 because that is when his 2 CONT daughter Mary is born. So it appears Louis arrived sometime between 1860 2 CONT and 1867. 1 NOTE But I'm still not certain when he arrived in the U.S. from Germany. 1 NOTE It could be the mid-1850s along with two families of Wenzels that came 2 CONT through Galveston and settled in the New Braunfels, Comal County area. 1 NOTE According to a ship's manifest for the Minna, a ---- Wenzel, wife and 2 CONT son, arrived in Galveston, Texas, on Nov. 3, 1854. They were from 2 CONT Ruckersdorf. It doesn't say the port of departure. 1 NOTE And the manifest for the Hampden shows the family of F.A. Wenzel, which 2 CONT included 10 people ranging in age from 8 to 56, arrived in Galveston 2 CONT on April 1, 1854. 1 NOTE The family was from Lichtenhagen, Prussia. Later in the census records 2 CONT for 1860, they say they are from Saxony. 1 NOTE (The source for both immigrant information is New Homes in A New Land: 2 CONT German Immigration to Texas, 1847-1861 by Ethel Hander Geue. The book can 2 CONT be found in the Rosenberg Library in Galveston and the Clayton Library in 2 CONT Houston.) 1 NOTE It could be that Louis Wenzel arrived in the U.S. long before these two 2 CONT families. According to a History of Comal County, an 1850 Census lists 2 CONT yet another Wenzel family from Bavaria, headed by a Margarethe Wenzel. 2 CONT When and where she arrived, I don't know. 1 NOTE It's pretty clear that Louis moved to Galveston alone as a man in his 20s. 1 NOTE Assuming he was about 11 when he came Texas (this based on the arrival 2 CONT dates of the two Wenzel families), or was 6 or 7 (if he came from the 2 CONT Margarethe Wenzel family) he would have been 21 or 25 by the mid-60s 2 CONT when he arrived in Galveston. 1 NOTE Nevertheless, I still haven't been able to locate him in Texas or 2 CONT anywhere before 1867. One thing's for certain, he wasn't in Comal County 2 CONT in 1860, as its census lists three Wenzel families, one headed by F.A., 2 CONT another by Margarethe and a third headed by her son Ignaz. 1 NOTE The Census Index for Texas, 1860, lists only the Wenzels Comal County. 2 CONT However, in the 1870 index it does list a Julius Wenzel in Marion County, 2 CONT p. 441, 3.W. Jefferson. But as we know, by then Louis is married and 2 CONT living in Galveston. The question now is where did Julius come from. 1 NOTE There is also no record of any, any Wenzels in Louisiana for 1860 and 2 CONT 1870. 1 NOTE So what does all this mean, we know Louis is in Galveston in 1867, was 2 CONT born about 24 years earlier in Saxony and died sometime between 1873 and 2 CONT 1878 in Galveston. He may have arrived with the F.A. Wenzel's in 1854 at 2 CONT the age of 11 but somehow moved out of that house by the time of the 1860 2 CONT Census at the age of 17. Or he may have arrived long before in the late 2 CONT 1840s at the age of 6 or 7 but moved out of state with a relative by 1850 2 CONT (he's not in the Comal census, nor are there any other Wenzels in the 2 CONT state index at that time.). 1 NOTE Or he could have arrived in 1854 from Ruckersdorf with "---- Wenzel, wife 2 CONT and son" and moved out of state during the 1860 Census with his family 2 CONT only to return as an adult in 1867. 1 NOTE Much is left to be investigated. Some possibilities: Census records for 2 CONT Ruckersdorf, Germany, and Lichtenhagen, Prussia, prior to 1854; other 2 CONT state indexes for Wenzels for 1860 and 1850. A marriage record to 2 CONT Margaret Hermann or his death record may also identify his father. 1 NOTE SOURCES 1 NOTE Baptismal Record of St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1860-1900, 2 CONT Texas Room of the Rosenberg Library, Galveston, Texas. 2 CONT Family lore. 2 CONT 1859-60 Galveston City Directory, microfiche at the Clayton Library. 2 CONT (Shows he wasn't here then). 2 CONT 1878-79 Galveston City Directory, microfilm at the Rosenberg 2 CONT Library, Texas Room. 0 @I209@ INDI 1 NAME Louis Davidson /Wenzel/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE 26 Nov 1870 2 PLAC Galveston, Texas 1 DEAT 2 DATE 5 May 1916 2 PLAC Galveston, Texas 1 CHR 2 PLAC Calvary Cemetery 1 BAPM 2 PLAC LABEL5: St. Patrick's Catholic Church 1 CONF 2 PLAC Engineer for GH&H Railway 1 OCCU Catholic 1 FAMS @F009@ 1 FAMS @F010@ 1 FAMC @F008@ 1 NOTE BIO:The following obituary comes from the Galveston Daily News, 2 CONT May 5, 1916: 2 CONT WENZEL --- The funeral of Lewis D.
