"THE 2 CONT LAST INDIAN ENGAGEMENT IN RANDOLPH COUNTY WRITTEN BY CAPTAIN 2 CONT DAVID HOLMAN, WHO COMMANDED THE CUTHBERT FORCES THAT WENT 2 CONT AGAINST THE CREEK INDIANS, JULY 26, 1836, ON NOTHWAY CREEK. -- On 2 CONT the third Sunday in May we were at preaching not far from Cuthbert, and 2 CONT about the time the congregation was dismissed we received news that 2 CONT the indians had burned the town of Roanoke and were coming down the 2 CONT river, taking the county as they came. We all got home as soon as 2 CONT possible. The next thing to do was raise an army and station them at 2 CONT Georgetown to head off the Indians that were coming down the 2 CONT Chattachoochee. I at once raised three companies and marched them to 2 CONT Georgetown. We had not beeen there long when Capt. Booth, from Eufaula, 2 CONT came over and informed us that a steamer had just arrived at Eufaula and 2 CONT was loaded with supplies for the army at Columbus. As the captain of the 2 CONT boat had just heard the indians had taken Roanoke, he would not proceed 2 CONT any further unless he was guarded to Columbus. Capt. Booth said the 2 CONT captain of the boat wanted 200 men. Capt. Booth informed us there were 2 CONT forty in the boat and if he could get that number of men he would start 2 CONT that night and arrive at the burned city to have a breakfast fight. A few 2 CONT days before we started them to Columbus with the steam which was load 2 CONT with provisions for the army at that place, Capt. Guilford had gotten a 2 CONT small company and marched to Roanoke, but they found the Indians so 2 CONT numerous that it wasn't worth while to make an attack and they returned 2 CONT in disorder as quickly as possible. -- We left the wharf at Georgetown 2 CONT about 8 o'clock at night for the burned city. Nothing occurred during the 2 CONT night worth mentioning. We arrived at Florence a little after sunrise, 2 CONT halted our boat at the wharf, formed aline of battle and marched up to 2 CONT Roanoke. We found no Indians there, nothing but the ruins of a thriving 2 CONT little city. We then marched back to the boat and cooked and ate our 2 CONT scanty little rations of sour flour and rancid bacon, after which we 2 CONT started up the river to Columbus. As the most of us had been up all of the 2 CONT previous night, and being out of danger, most of us were asleep on the 2 CONT boat. We had not proceeded more than eight miles up the river when the 2 CONT Indians fired on us from a dense canebreak on the Alabama side. We 2 CONT returned the fire as soon as possible, but without much effect,f or they 2 CONT were concealed so as not to be seen. We had to fire at the smoke of their 2 CONT guns. I suppose they fired on us for about 200 yards up the river. After 2 CONT we got out of the reach of their guns, we halted the boat and held a 2 CONT consultation, and decided to go on as we did not know how many Indians 2 CONT were concealed in the canebreak, and I think this was a wise conclusion, 2 CONT for I was informed afterwards that it was the notorious chief, Jim 2 CONT Henry, who had done so much mischief in Alabama, with 500 warriors at 2 CONT his command. So we proceeded on our way to Columbus. We arrived at a 2 CONT place called Chinkey Bluff, where we remained for the night. A guard was 2 CONT selected for the night and I was chosen to place the first guard and I 2 CONT accordingly took command of the guard and marched up to the bluff, 2 CONT which was opposite a Mr. Qualles' plantation, and saw the plantation 2 CONT house on fire. I proceeded to place the guards out but nothing occurred 2 CONT during the night worth mentioning, and next morning we proceeded on our 2 CONT way to Columbus, arriving there next day about twelve o'clock. We 2 CONT unloaded the boat and called for quarters but got as good as non. We 2 CONT remained in and about the city that night but left the next morning in 2 CONT disgust, knowing how we had risk our lives to guard a boat loaded with 2 CONT provisions for that place. -- A few days after we arrived at Georgetown 2 CONT we received a dispatch from Co. Lowe, who had the command at fort 2 CONT Jones, to come to their assistance as quickly as possikble for he 2 CONT expected to be attacked any minute. Fort Jones was eight to ten miles 2 CONT above Georgetown on the river. We got in readiness and marched to the 2 CONT fort, most of the time at double quick. We got in hearing of the guns, but 2 CONT when we arrived the Indians wer all gone. Nothin worthy of note, only one 2 CONT Indian was shot from a horse. It being late in the evening, we held a 2 CONT consultaiton and thought best to guard the crossing place on the river. 2 CONT We accordingly repaired to these crossings and remained on the back of 2 CONT the river where it rained a good part of the night. Next morning we 2 CONT returned to the fort and sent out spies to ascertain if they could find an 2 CONT Indians in the neighborhood.
