2 CONT " My father would not even go to his mother's  funeral in 1903 although
2 CONT my mother was friendly with her.  My mother said this was the cause of
2 CONT the trouble between him and Major Bowes ( his half brother, Edward).
2 CONT My father endured great hardships in getting ahead, and was a poor
2 CONT business man, in spite of many other good qualities.  I started to
2 CONT Stanford[University] in 1918 on the strength of  football at Lick( Lick
2 CONT supplied about half of the Stanford football players at that time and a
2 CONT Lick player was practically guaranteed a job to support himself during
2 CONT his college career.   All CA colleges played rugby in those days.  However,
2 CONT most of us went into the army as soon as enlistments were opened,and
2 CONT during the war, all colleges switched to American football which I knew
2 CONT nothing about.  I dropped out of Stanford at war's end and went to work
2 CONT at Smith Emory Co.  After about 1 1/2 years,. I started  to Cal[ University
2 CONT of CA at Berkeley] and was able to live at home [ in SF] board free  and
2 CONT work during vacations.  In 1925 my dad sold out his interest in the shop
2 CONT and retired at 55 years of age.  He made poor investments with his
2 CONT profits in the shop and lost it all in the Depression."
1 NOTE John III was very successful as Materials Engineer for the Manufacturing
2 CONT Dept of Chevron in San Francisco and enjoyed a very comfortable
2 CONT retirement of  22 years, living in a lovely retirement community ,
2 CONT Oakmont, and traveling extensively.   He led a very full life.

1 NOTE           FAMILY STORIES, LEGENDS, FACT?
1 NOTE After parents' death, John was raised  in Lancaster, MA by his aunt
2 CONT ,Abigail Shaler Stillwell, widow of Elias  Miller Stillwell, ( brother of
2 CONT his mother) , financed by uncle William Shaler.
1 NOTE  After 1832 he lived with Nathaniel Burger Shaler,  the  eldest brother
2 CONT and head of family, in Newport, KY.  Nathaniel  was a physician at the
2 CONT Newport Barracks.... graduated from Harvard Medical school  1827
2 CONT (1829)(HISTORY OF LANCASTER, MA  p 624)....
2 CONT In NS SHALER'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY, p 83, he describes a situation which
2 CONT may have led to the next legend( fact or fiction):  " It was the custom of
2 CONT the large householders in the early days of Kentucky to provide so far as
2 CONT possible for their needs by domestic work.  This plan of "living within
2 CONT yourself", as it was called, was retained and carried very far by my
2 CONT grandfather( he must mean his mother's father), so that very little
2 CONT money was spent for any provisions. Flour, rice, soap, candles, most
2 CONT kinds of meat and all vegetables were prepared in the house or sent in
2 CONT from the farms; so, too, the cloth of various kinds, coarse cotton and
2 CONT linen, the woolen goods known as jeans for every-day wear.  My
2 CONT grandfather even went so far as to undertake the manufacture of silk,
2 CONT having brought in an Italian family for that purpose. At that time some
2 CONT silkworms were grown in the neighborhood and the cocoons were reeled,
2 CONT spun, and woven in a little factory.  This work was maintained up to
2 CONT about the time of his death with such success that the women of the
2 CONT family rejoiced in an abundance of excellent black silk.  So good was it,
2 CONT indeed, that it took the premium in the so-called World's Fair held in
2 CONT New York about 1854."
1 NOTE   according to  narratives by John Truly Shaler II and III, John I was
2 CONT supposedly disowned by the family when he married Caroline Amelia
2 CONT Ford, the family seamstress who had recently immigrated from Ireland
2 CONT (and apparently hired in MA by Nathaniel while back at Harvard for a
2 CONT reunion)(probably in 1854.. when Acc to AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF NS SHALER,P.
2 CONT 68-69  NS SHALER went with his father to MA to Lancaster to visit Aunt
2 CONT Abigail, then on to Boston to visit father's college friends, and Long
2 CONT Island by railway to Cleveland, steamer to Buffalo and railway the rest
2 CONT of the way . [ on p. 9 he said this trip took place in 1855.... no big deal as
2 CONT far as his record is concerned, but his lack of accuracy adds to the
2 CONT confusion with John Truly Shaler I(11) and Caroline Ford(12).]  They
2 CONT supposedly ran away  across the river  from Newport, KY  and were
2 CONT married in Cincinatti, OH.  So far, my efforts to find their marriage
2 CONT records have proved fruitless.( try KY, OH, MA).

2 CONT was sent to Liverpool to a girls' school for her education.  We next know
2 CONT of her arrival in Boston where she resided for a time with a friend of the
2 CONT family.  The name I have forgotten.  The next we know she had taken
2 CONT service as seamstress in the Shaler family in Newport, KY.  It appears
2 CONT she must have been engaged for that service by my Uncle, Dr. Shaler(my
2 CONT father's eldest  brother.) while on a visit to Harvard University of which
2 CONT he was a graduate.  The occasion being a gathering of the alumni. The
2 CONT parents having died, according to the custom of the southern aristocracy,
2 CONT the eldest son was the head of the family. There was a large estate and
2 CONT the family lived in luxury with black servants for everyone. Uncle
2 CONT William[ really Nathaniel B.] was a medical doctor and as there was a
2 CONT large encampment of soldiers at Newport, his rating was army doctor.
2 CONT          After a short time it appears that a secret romance  developed
2 CONT between John Truly and the seamstress(Caroline).  At that time it was a
2 CONT serious violation of the code of the South for one of the family to enter
2 CONT into any such relation with anyone in their employ.  My father was 32 [
2 CONT probably 42 since he was 32 in 1845) and Mother was then 21(1857).
2 CONT They crossed the Ohio River to Cincinnati and were married.  That must
2 CONT have been about 1858.  On returning home they informed Bro. Dr. of what
2 CONT occurred and the Dr. promptly threw a fit, in fact he must have had
2 CONT several of them.  He told John Truly that they must separate and have the
2 CONT marriage annulled or they must leave the house and John would be
2 CONT disinherited, in other words , 'his picture would be turned toward the
2 CONT wall.'  It can be said of John that he was honorable enough to respect the
2 CONT vow he had made and it is probable that he told the old tyrant to 'go jump
2 CONT in the lake!'

2 CONT "up and at them" ideas .  Quick in her decisions and prompt to carry them
2 CONT out was a part of her life and seasoned with a love of adventure.    On
2 CONT arrival she became a seamstress in the Cutting family.  Mr. Cutting was
2 CONT head of the Cutting Packing Co. the largest processors of fruit and
2 CONT vegetables  and was very wealthy.  She was well treated there and was
2 CONT given every consideration.  ........

2 CONT as 'consort of "late" Timothy Shaler.'  This description is misleading
2 CONT because it implies that Timothy was already dead at the time of her
2 CONT death.  However this was not the case.  Perhaps the gravestone was
2 CONT erected later, after the 1786 death of Timothy, by one of her sons, and at
2 CONT that time, he was the "late" Timothy Shaler.  The date must be hard to
2 CONT read on the gravestone because in many places in print it is read as
2 CONT "1785" instead of "1783" and her age at death is read as" 54" instead of
2 CONT "34" ( 1749-1783).  The article describes the location of the grave and
2 CONT the inscription on the stone:"Located on Indian Cabin Road, 0.5 miles east
2 CONT of Philadelphia Avenue, Egg Harbor, at the northeast corner of the Park
2 CONT Lake, about 50 fee in woods from bend of road.
2 CONT 			Sibbel Shaler, who rests now in the pines in a common grave with
2 CONT three of her infant children, was the wife of one of the more noted
2 CONT privateer captains to sail the Jersey coast.
2 CONT 			Timothy, Master in 1782 of the galley Alligator, a vessel owned by
2 CONT Joseph Ball of Batsto, as well as many other craft that had engaged in
2 CONT privateering ventures, made the Forks and Chestnut Neck his
2 CONT headquarters for many daring exploits and engagements that resulted in
2 CONT the seizure of prizes.
2 CONT 			Folklore claims that Mrs. Shaler and her children were massacred by
2 CONT Indians during one of her husband's many voyages, but reliable aboriginal
2 CONT records of New Jersey fail to reveal a single case of an Indian massacre
2 CONT in the history of the province.
2 CONT 			What caused the simultaneous deaths of Timothy Shaler's family is
2 CONT open to speculation, but it could have been the accidental burning of
2 CONT their home, or disease."
1 NOTE FORGOTTEN TOWNS OF SOUTHERN NEW JERSEY by Henry C.Beck,
2 CONT E.P.Dutton& Co., Inc. 1936, p 214-5, " The tiny road that leads to
2 CONT Gloucester indicates clearly that there is little activity in this area
2 CONT now.  One leaves the main road a mile or two beyond the Bungalow Hotel,
2 CONT back of which, beside two concrete bins, one may find the grave of the
2 CONT woman and her two children, who, in local legend, were scalped by
2 CONT Indians.  The tiny cemetery has been enclosed by kindly hands and the
2 CONT graves, marked years ago by the  planting of the customary cedar trees,
2 CONT are easily discovered in the woodland grove.
2 CONT 		On the lone tombstone one may read the description, ' Here lieth the
2 CONT mortal remains of Mrs. Sibbel shaler, consort of Timothy Shaler, who
2 CONT died on the second day of April, 1783, in the 54th[really 34th] year of her
2 CONT life, with her two[really 3] children.  That is all the information the
2 CONT well-preserved stone imparts, but the story goes that Timothy, a sea
2 CONT captain, returned home to find his house burned and his wife and children
2 CONT slain in a raid by the Lenapes."
1 NOTE The circumstances of her death and that of the three"infants"( no doubt
2 CONT preschoolers born between 1778 and 1783) all on the same day still
2 CONT remain a mystery.  The four older children were apparently not at home,
2 CONT perhaps at school and therefore escaped safely.  Tim may have been on
2 CONT his ship at the time.  Since the four school age children survived, the
2 CONT suggestion that the deaths were caused by disease is questionable.

1 NOTE H.W.S. Cleveland described William's death( VOYAGES OF A MERCHANT
2 CONT NAVIGATOR, p. 235-6:  "The disease (cholera) raged fearfully there at the
2 CONT time, and upwards of eight hundred deaths occurred on the day that Mr.
2 CONT Shaler died.  He was first attacked at five p.m. and died the next day at
2 CONT seven a.m.  The dead were carried off in carts and no funeral rights(sic)
2 CONT were allowed, and it was only by an energetic appeal to the
2 CONT captain-general that my father( Richard Cleveland) got a permit to
2 CONT enclose the remains of his old friend in a coffin and accompany it as a
2 CONT solitary mourner to the foreigner's burying ground at Chorero, five miles
2 CONT west of the city, on the seashore, where he saw it interred, and
2 CONT subsequently placed over the spot a massive stone monument bearing a
2 CONT suitable inscription."

2 CONT adds more information on William Shaler's exploits in Algiers:" By 1812,
2 CONT Algerine conditions had become intolerable.  The Dey of that country had
2 CONT started a quarrel over the tribute and had begun piratical attacks upon
2 CONT the merchantmen of the US within his reach.  Only the fact that the War
2 CONT of 1812 drove its flag out of the Mediterranean saved the US shipping
2 CONT from great damage. The Algerine navy succeeded in capturing only one
2 CONT American prize, the Edwin, with a crew of ten and single passenger.
2 CONT These unfortunates were thrown into slavery; even their government was
2 CONT unable to ransom them.
2 CONT 						The Algerine question was first on the agenda when the ink had
2 CONT dried on the Treaty of Ghent.  President Madison promptly asked Congress
2 CONT to declare war on Feb 23, 1815 and by Mar 2, the declaration was
2 CONT proclaimed.  A naval expedition was speedily oganized  and plans made to
2 CONT send with it a commission of three-- two naval officers and a civilian,
2 CONT with power to negotiate for a peace.
2 CONT 							The American navy was rich in competent officers, but to find a
2 CONT civilian of sufficient capactiy and training for the diplomatic
2 CONT responsibility was more of a problem.  President Madison, however,
2 CONT chose a man admirably fitted for this task-- William Shaler of
2 CONT Connecticut, a man with unique qualifications for so taxing a post.
2 CONT 							William Shaler was born just prior to the Revolution, and the
2 CONT premature death of his father  had caused him to take to the sea at an
2 CONT early age.  He became an agent for an  American house which traded
2 CONT extensively with France during the French Revolution.  Shaler learned
2 CONT French and French business methods, but more important, he waxed
2 CONT enthusiastic over French ideas of liberty, equality, and fraternity.  He
2 CONT had also sailed to South America and the Orient, and when the Spanish-
2 CONT American revolutions broke out, he was appointed an American agent to
2 CONT Cuba and Mexico.  Shaler now was anxious for another assignment to
2 CONT Spanish America, where he might further aid the cause of liberty, but his
2 CONT superiors saw in him potentialities for the African post.  Madison invited
2 CONT him to undertake this peace mission and then to settle in Algiers as
2 CONT Consul General  for all the Barbary states.  To this Shaler acceeded and
2 CONT prepared to demand respect for American power behind the guns of a
2 CONT fleet.  He entered upon his new assignment with great enthusiasm. To
2 CONT him it was  ' an employment very distinguished in itself, surrounded with
2 CONT all the "pomp and glorious circumstance of war"; and in many respects
2 CONT more agreeable than anything at this time in the gift of government'.  It
2 CONT was his hope that the US would ' have a controlling aim in the general
2 CONT affairs of the civilized world' before he died.
2 CONT 							Squadrons were organized under two great captains, Stephen
2 CONT Decatur and William Bainbridge.  It was with the former that Shaler
2 CONT sailed on the Guerriere on May 20, 1815. The commissioners were
2 CONT instructed to make an honorable peace and a treaty which would free the
2 CONT prisoners and relieve the US from further tribute.  However, the US was
2 CONT to give voluntarily as much money as either Britain or France agreed to
2 CONT continue.  While there was to be no stipulated ransom paid for the
2 CONT prisoners, a private gratuity might be presented afterwards.  The
2 CONT commission was provided with $30,000 for the expense of the
2 CONT negotiation, and among the presents they were to take was a beautiful
2 CONT sabre for the Dey, which had been secured in London at a cost of $5000.

2 CONT 					By July 4 the formalities [of the treaty] had been completed, and
2 CONT Shaler went ashore where he was introduced to the Dey, to whom he
2 CONT presented the ceremonial sword.  He also dispersed some $17,000 among
2 CONT myriad officials, including the Dey's barber and two cooks. Thus Shaler
2 CONT entered upon the duties of his new position as Consul General to the
2 CONT Barbary states, with general oversight of the activities and expenditures
2 CONT of the American consuls at Tripoli, Tunis, and Morocco.
2 CONT          His household was small, for he was a confirmed bachelor-- though
2 CONT one with a roving eye.  He had brought with him, his nephew and name
2 CONT sake, William Shaler(19)[Nathaniel's son]

2 CONT 					This time the task was finished.  The second treaty was to be the
2 CONT law between the two powers for years to come.  It had been achieved by
2 CONT two naval expeditions and the havoc wrought by the British
2 CONT bombardment. Despite this successful outcome, however, Shaler was
2 CONT depressed.  He was tired of the mission and anxious to return home.  Also
2 CONT there seemed no future in  the post, and so far he had been unable to save
2 CONT anything from his salary.  He was a poor man , and since his brother
2 CONT Nathaniel had perished in the War of 1812, his family was dependent
2 CONT upon him.  He left Algiers, May 8, 1817,  but  he did not go home, he was
2 CONT involved  in more activities in the area,although because of an outbreak
2 CONT of the Plague,  he didn't actually return to Algiers until the fall of 1819,
2 CONT still trying to be transferred, but the State Department kept him at his
2 CONT post.  Save for a leave during the winter of 1821-1822, which he spent
2 CONT in the US[ could this have been when Ann died?  perhaps in Lancaster,
2 CONT MA], Shaler was to remain on the shores of the Mediterranean for nine
2 CONT more years.
2 CONT 					In 1822, when he returned from his American sojourn, he found his
2 CONT position in danger.  He had left his nephew and namesake, William
2 CONT Shaler[19], in charge of the consulate when he departed for home, but the
2 CONT youth was irresponsible and prone to escapades.

2 CONT            In  1826, William Shaler's book , SKETCHES OF ALGIERS, was

2 CONT and  at least by 1682 had married Thomas Shaylor.
1 NOTE            In The DESCENDENTS OF THOMAS LORD (1946) p. 75, by Kenneth
2 CONT Lord, it states that"William Lord, born at Saybrook, CT Oct 1643, died 4
2 CONT Dec 1696, 'm. about 1678 Sarah Brooks, b. Dec 1662, dau of Thomas and
2 CONT Marah Spencer Brooks of Haddam.'   Administration was granted to the
2 CONT widow, afterwards named as Sarah and 'her brother Thomas Shaylor'(
2 CONT DIGEST OF EARLY CT PROBATE RECORDS).  This brother-sister
2 CONT relationship  between Sarah(Brooks)Lord and Thomas Shaylor Jr.
2 CONT identifies the widow Brooks as the mother (or stepmother ) of Thomas
2 CONT Jr., depending on when she married his father. Kenneth Lord states that
2 CONT Thomas Shaylor Jr. was Sarah's half- brother.
2 CONT            Just when the Spencer girl became Mrs. Shaylor can be deduced 			 			
2 CONT        	
2 CONT from the presumption that, if she was the mother of Thomas Jr., and
2 CONT Haddam Town Records show his birth as 16 Dec 1670, she must have
2 CONT married Thomas Sr. in early 1670 or before.
1 NOTE             The Manwaring DIGEST 1:186 states that by order of the Court on

2 CONT 11 Apr 1670 granted administration of the estate of Thomas Brooks, who
2 CONT had died in Dec 1668, to the "present husband of the widow of sd Brooks".
1 NOTE             Harrison Shaler has"divided the  researchers on her identity into
2 CONT 3 camps: 1) those who assert her name was Alice:( e.g. William H.
2 CONT Spencer, SPENCER FAMILY RECORD p 20), 2) those calling her Marah( e.g.
2 CONT Homer Brainerd, SURVEY OR THE SCOVILS OR SCOVILLS IN ENGLAND AND
2 CONT AMERICA, p 144), and 3) those contending that Alice and Marah were two
2 CONT different persons, two successive wives(e.g. Frederick G. Virkus,
2 CONT ABRIDGED COMPENDIUM OF AMERICAN GENEALOGY 3:350.).  According to
2 CONT Harrison Shaler, the answer lies in HADDAM DEEDS 1:37 which contains
2 CONT the record of a deed executed 15 Dec 1670, the day before the birth of
2 CONT Thomas Jr by "Thomas Shailer and his wife Marah Shailer."  The
2 CONT INESCAPABLE CONCLUSION [ captials mine] is that between 18 Oct 1668
2 CONT and 11 April 1670, Thomas Shaylor married Marah Spencer, widow of
2 CONT Thomas Brooks , who became the mother of his five children and was his
2 CONT ONLY [ capitals mine]wife." According to Harrison  Shaler, Marah's father,
2 CONT Gerrard Spencer, lived in Lynn MA from 1636 to 1647, but the Lynn Vital
2 CONT records are missing for that period.  He had not found any records of her
2 CONT other marriages or of her death.  She was referred to as Brooks' widow
2 CONT or "my daughter Brooks" in her father's will."

2 CONT son John, who died 3 Aug 1682 and in his will gave 20 shillings to his
2 CONT "sister Shaylor."  He also "declared in his will that Thomas Brooks, whom
2 CONT his sister Brooks had  committed to his care when at the age of 18 years,
2 CONT should show all respect to his mother, now the wife of Thomas Shaylor."
2 CONT (Thomas was born in 1664, elder Brooks died in 1668).  So the wife of
2 CONT Thomas Brooks was a daughter of Gerrard Spencer and  at least by 1682
2 CONT had married Thomas Shaylor.
1 NOTE            In The DESCENDENTS OF THOMAS LORD (1946) p. 75, by Kenneth
2 CONT Lord, it states that"William Lord, born at Saybrook, CT Oct 1643, died 4
2 CONT Dec 1696, 'm. about 1678 Sarah Brooks, b. Dec 1662, dau of Thomas and
2 CONT Marah Spencer Brooks of Haddam.'   Administration was granted to the
2 CONT widow, afterwards named as Sarah and 'her brother Thomas Shaylor'
2 CONT (DIGEST OF EARLY CT PROBATE RECORDS).  This brother-sister
2 CONT relationship  between Sarah(Brooks)Lord and Thomas Shaylor Jr.
2 CONT identifies the widow Brooks as the mother (or stepmother ) of Thomas
2 CONT Jr., depending on when she married his father. Kenneth Lord states that
2 CONT Thomas Shaylor Jr. was Sarah's half- brother.
2 CONT            Just when the Spencer girl became Mrs. Shaylor can be deduced

1 NOTE             Harrison Shaler has"divided the  researchers on her identity into
2 CONT 3 camps: 1) those who assert her name was Alice:( e.g. William H.
2 CONT Spencer, SPENCER FAMILY RECORD p 20), 2) those calling her Marah( e.g.
2 CONT Homer Brainerd, SURVEY OR THE SCOVILS OR SCOVILLS IN ENGLAND AND
2 CONT AMERICA, p 144), and 3) those contending that Alice and Marah were two
2 CONT different persons, two successive wives(e.g. Frederick G. Virkus,
2 CONT ABRIDGED COMPENDIUM OF AMERICAN GENEALOGY 3:350.).  According to
2 CONT Harrison Shaler, the answer lies in HADDAM DEEDS 1:37 which contains
2 CONT the record of a deed executed 15 Dec 1670, the day before the birth of
2 CONT Thomas Jr by "Thomas Shailer and his wife Marah Shailer."  The
2 CONT INESCAPABLE CONCLUSION [ captials mine] is that between 18 Oct 1668
2 CONT and 11 April 1670, Thomas Shaylor married Marah Spencer, widow of
2 CONT Thomas Brooks , who became the mother of his five children and was his
2 CONT ONLY [ capitals mine]wife."
2 CONT According to Harrison  Shaler, Marah's father,Gerrard Spencer, lived in
2 CONT Lynn MA from 1636 to 1647, but the Lynn Vital records are missing for
2 CONT that period.  He had not found any records of her other marriages or of
2 CONT her death.  She was referred to as Brooks' widow or "my daughter Brooks"
2 CONT in her father's will.

2 CONT Spencer being married and sealed to Thomas Brooks, Alice Spencer being

2 CONT 		The cousin Daniel Spencer was at death of Cony Hatch, co Middlesex,
2 CONT citizen and grocer of London, and left a will dated 26 July 1665, proved 8
2 CONT Nov 1668[Waters, op. cit. ;913]  .  He evidently died a wealthy man,
2 CONT mentioning messuages or lands in Lothbury, near Greene's Court, London;
2 CONT in Hitchin, Hippoletts and Preston, co Hertford, including the Red Lion Inn
2 CONT in Hitchin; in Gravesend and Rochester, Kent, and in Tilbery, Essex.  He
2 CONT named wife Sarah; eldest son Samuel; son Daniel; daughters Rebecca and

2 CONT search of chancery records would reveal something of interest.  An
2 CONT action of this nature, naming  the parties at interest, would be of
2 CONT immense value if brought after the death of Michael Spencer in 1653, for
2 CONT it would name his surviving children.  We have full records of the
2 CONT families of the other three brothers, but as we shall presently see, the
2 CONT New England records are very defective with respect to the children of

2 CONT as the mother (or stepmother ) of Thomas Jr., depending on when she
2 CONT married his father. Kenneth Lord states that Thomas Shaylor Jr. was
2 CONT Sarah's half- brother.
2 CONT The above quotation also answers the confusion between Thomas BROOKS
2 CONT and Thomas SHAYLOR, both sons of Marah SPENCER.
1 NOTE     Manwaring's Digest of EARLY CT PROBATE RECORDS, 1:364, proves that
2 CONT "What's her name "was the daughter of Gerrard Spencer and married both
2 CONT Thomas Brooks and Thomas Shaylor: Ensign Gerrard Spencer had a son
2 CONT John, who died 3 Aug 1682 and in his will gave 20 shillings to his "sister
2 CONT Shaylor."  He also "declared in his will that Thomas Brooks, whom his

2 CONT in County Fermanaugh, Ireland for many years.  His pastorate included a
2 CONT large area of Northern Ireland.  He seems to have been an active man in
2 CONT his calling.  It is related of him that he spent much of his time in caring
2 CONT for the less prosperous of his neighbors.  It was his habit to use his
2 CONT horse and carriage in collecting food and clothing from the more
2 CONT prosperous people to give to those in need.  Although the district was
2 CONT largely of the Protestant denomination, he made no distinction  in his
2 CONT assistance to those in want.    It is said that he was appointed to the
2 CONT office of Bishop but that he refused the appointment saying that he could
2 CONT do more good in remaining with his own people who in many ways were
2 CONT dependent upon him.  There is no record of the appointment having been
2 CONT rescinded.  The duties were probably taken over by others, but he was
2 CONT always addressed as Bishop.  He died at the advanced age of 90 years."

2 CONT Braintree, MA when we resided there and made her home with us.  When
2 CONT we left Abington, MA she remained there, coming to San Francisco about
2 CONT 1878.  In the meantime she married Adelbert Pratt and had a daughter,
2 CONT Elizabeth.  They resided in our home for a while, probably a year when
2 CONT they moved elsewhere.  It seems there was some difficulty between
2 CONT Mother( Caroline) and Aunt Emily   because there never was any contact
2 CONT between them afterwards.  I was fond of Aunt Emily, she being of a
2 CONT lively and cheerful disposition.  In my visits to her home in later years
2 CONT she often told me of my father of whom she was a great admirer.  She
2 CONT often spoke to me of my close resemblance to "Truly"(she always called
2 CONT him by his middle name).  Her pleasant and interesting conversation
2 CONT stand out in my memory of her as the great events of my visits.
2 CONT     Uncle Pratt was a Civil War veteran. He walked with a slight limp in
2 CONT one leg due to an injury in the war.  In his declining years he was a
2 CONT resident of the Soldiers" Home in Yountville, Napa Co(CA) where he died.
2 CONT      Aunt Emily lived with her daughter,Elizabeth who was married to a
2 CONT Mr. Kelley and had 2 children but for many years has been a widow.  The
2 CONT eldest is Dr. Buron D. Kelley, a practicing dentist with his own office and
2 CONT "torture chamber".  The other child is a daughter.  Except for my visits to
2 CONT Aunt Emily I have had but little contact with them .  Why, I do not know.
2 CONT It may be due to neglect from both sides.
2 CONT    Aunt Emily died possibly 20 years ago( ca. 1928) at the age of 92 (
2 CONT birth date 1836... same as Caroline"... must be a year or so later)
1 NOTE P.S.  Adelbert Pratt was employed for several years previous to his going
2 CONT to the Soldiers' Home as watchman(day) at Woodward's Gardens.  As a boy
2 CONT I went to Woodward's Gardens on many Sundays.  I would go to a side gate
2 CONT which was close by an arbor in which he ate his lunch and on my knock on
2 CONT the gate he would let me in and turn me loose in that "land of wonders".

2 CONT Bowes met at Woodward Gardens , San Francisco, during an outing of
2 CONT some sort.  They were later married.    He was nineteen when he made the
2 CONT trip to San Francisco via Cape Horn.  His mother traveled from Joliet
2 CONT across the plains in a covered wagon and remained in San Francisco the
2 CONT rest of her life.  She lived to be in her 80's and met a tragic death by fire
2 CONT in her own home.    About 1859, John Bowes went to Michigan Bar ,
2 CONT Sacramento Co. CA where he worked at the Reader Hotel and was there at
2 CONT the time of a flood.  He returned to San Francisco where he remained
2 CONT until his death in  1881.  His business was exporting and it entailed the
2 CONT weighing of shipments.  Since all exporting was by water at that time it
2 CONT was necessary that he spend much time on the docks.  As a result of
2 CONT exposure  to the raw  winds and dampness, he suffered with rheumatism.
2 CONT He also developed a heart condition and was a semi-invalid for a period.
2 CONT He was well liked and his assistant on hearing of his death was so
2 CONT shocked that he collapsed and died also.  The exporting business was
2 CONT successful and Mrs. Bowes would have been in comfortable
2 CONT circumstances if her husband's partner had not cheated her out of her
2 CONT rightful share.  As she had no recourse, she did sewing and teaching in
2 CONT order to support herself and the four children still at home.  I belive the
2 CONT partner's name was Sullivan. "

2 CONT record.  "Carrie"  Bowes became known as a child prodigy in San
2 CONT Francisco and was sent to Europe by some wealthy family for advanced
2 CONT study.  I have a news item from Time magazine dated 26 May 1947 that
2 CONT concerns the career of Artur Rubinstein, the world famous pianist that
2 CONT states, "at ten he was pushed toward famous pianist Eugene d'Albert and
2 CONT introduced as "little Rubenstein".  Someone in the family, probably my
2 CONT cousin Johnie, added in pencil , "Carrie was a protege of  d' Albert."
2 CONT        This is about all I know of her early musical career.  Her later
2 CONT career was centered in Europe and other parts of the world.  At some
2 CONT point in her life, she married Dr. Rudolph Tombo Jr., professor of
2 CONT Germanic Languages at Columbia University and he became her manager.
2 CONT She was known professionally thereafter as Madame Loraine Tombo.  We
2 CONT have an undated news clipping of Dr. Tombo's death from
2 CONT pleuro-pneumonia.
2 CONT          We have undated programs where she appeared in company with
2 CONT Gunnar  Johansen at the Fairmont Hotel in S.F. , at the Aeolian Hall  in
2 CONT London, 8May 1919 under the patronage of a long list of royalty., undated
2 CONT extracts of press notices of Mme. Lorraine Tombo, pianiste,from London.
2 CONT We have no other evidence of her professional career, but I heard from
2 CONT the family that she performed all over the world.  We do have a date of
2 CONT 1898 on the oil painting of her from Manilla, Phillipines.
2 CONT          The next and last of her recorded activities is a reprint of an
2 CONT article in Every Week magazine, published in Cleveland, Ohio, dated Jan
2 CONT 18, 1942, which describes her confrontation  with a German general
2 CONT when trapped in France with a group of people who had difficulty in
2 CONT getting released.  This appears under the name of Caroline Bowes, not
2 CONT Tombo!   I heard that her later years were spent in Hollywood as a script
2 CONT writer.  She apparently had some literary ability as well as musical.  "
